I was elated to see this today. This performance is actually how I discovered Gavin Harrison and Porcupine Tree, just a few months ago. Porcupine Tree is now my musical obsession, the greatest band most people have never heard of. Thank you for making my day.
It's always an obsession, haha. It's never just liking one tune. You stare at it and it stares back. I started with In Absentia and then went to see them live and loved every second.
Letterman had like a week long drummer musical performance shows....Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, Sheila E, Roy Haynes, Dennis Chambers, Gavin Harrison were some of the guests that did drum solos...all the performers clips are on youtube

First of all "The Letterman "Drum week" was an annual event and Letterman often commented the drummer!! And he really had the best drummers on!!!!!!! And the band is awesome!!!!!!!!
Great reaction really enjoy these videos of great drummer. You asked who Anton is, he's the show's drummer, Anton Fig. He's now mostly working with Joe Bonamassa (probably one of the best blues rock guitarist today) for touring and recording. Paul Shaffer is also working with Joe and Anton for his "Keeping the blues alive" cruises.
Gavin, says in Wayne and Garth. We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy! He’s taken some Porcupine trees song into a big band music. Called, Cheating the polygraph and it’s fantastic. Thanks for bringing our crush out again Andrew!!!!!!!
So glad you got round to this. I honestly feel there's no dissecting this. You just have to sit and admire that this is where our instruments skill level resides. Gavin is just one of a kind which is what we all aspire to be.
That’s what being locked in a room for 8-9 hours a day with nothing but you and your drums get you. He worked his ass off to get there. Outstanding musician. In a class of him own!
Still remember staying up late in Aus to watch this on Letterman - and then promptly stole the ascending tom flam thingo at 3:21 and used it in a live drum solo I did a few times hahaha
Bassist here. The double bass behind the tiny bell cymbals was absolutely sickening. I would adore a chance to play alongside such a drummer. Thanks for the experience Rooney!
Hats off to you for your reaction to Gavin. He's truly amazing, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks so. Been a huge fan of Porcupine Tree for a long time. Have you checked out Gavin's Cymbal Song? It was from the Arriving Somewhere But Not Here concert, truly a work of art. I think you'd really dig it.
Couldn’t agree more. Love Neil Peart and have done since 1980, but since hearing Gavin around Fear Of A Blank Planet it’s all over. He’s just the best most interesting drummer there is. He can do it all.
He really showed how cool flams between the snare and toms can be. Instead of just playing accents or flams on the snare, he plays flams between two surfaces which makes the accented notes pop and stand out without having to hit really hard. Every time I hear Gavin play, he's giving me a lesson on the musicality of the drum set. I wasn't sure, but was he playing hertas with his feet while playing an melodic line on the toms? And speaking of toms, I thought he was pulling some really great tones out of them. I'm sure that Sonor makes great sounding drums, but I doubt I could make them sound as good as Gavin did. Awesome stuff!
Actually, it’s a PeeWee Ellis (James Brown, Van Morrison, etc.) tune that Jaco loved and popularized. Check out the version with Kenwood Dennard and John Scofield from Jaco’s instructional vid - much more laid back. Easy to find it on RUclips. Maceo Parker also recorded it with PeeWee on tenor and Bill Stewart on drums - very funky.
Thank you...Great upload for my birthday...But you wouldn't know that, lol...Gavin is an absolute beast!!!...I assume you normally get suggestions from Patreon, but I think you might enjoy the playthrough video for Richard Henshall's "Twisted Shadows" by drummer Matt Lynch...Tasty!
