Love Porcupine Tree! But for your info: That was not Porcupine Tree playing. Only the Singer Steven Wilson in that performance is from Porcupine Tree. The rest are other musicians helping Wilson on his Solo Tour. But yes the song is originally from Porcupine Tree. :D
So glad to see Steven Wilson here. He's the creative force behind Porcupine Tree. This performance is actually from one of his solo tours. He's a fantastic composer, sound engineer, and multt-instrumentalist who always has world class musicians backing him up. Incredible live. He's also a pioneer of surround sound mixing and remastering having been tapped to do remixes for bands like Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Tears For Fears, and many others. I think you'll love pretty much anything he's involved with. Hands down my favorite musician of all time.
Breaking News? That's NOT the "Porcupine Tree" Band... It's "Steven Wilson" Band Performing "Porcupine Tree" Song but Steven is the Front man of "Porcupine Tree" Band...
Here's a starting list of 10 live song's U can find and react to here on RUclips performing live by "Porcupine Tree" or PT!!! 1) Anesthetize 2) Arriving Somewhere but Not Here 3) Blackest Eyes 4) Drown With Me 5) Way Out Of Here 6) Normal 7) Don't Hate Me 8) Hatesong 9) The Start Of Something Beautiful 10) Even Less I apologize for leaving off some other Great PT live song's!!! 🎹🎸🎻🎵✌💙😎
Reacting to Steven Wilson's solo band line-up is a great opportunity to point out someone on stage you may've heard in jazz circles. You didn't see much of the keyboardist in this particular cut, but it's Adam Holzman. Holzman was hired in 1985 by Miles Davis to play keyboards on the Tutu album. He stayed with him for four years, eventually becoming his musical director. Fast forward 25 years, and he became a foundational player on Steven Wilson's solo work, both in studio and on stage. You can hear Holzman take the spotlight on the improvisational piano opening to Wilson's touring version of "Deform to Form a Star" [ ruclips.net/video/DGXWir2y1hQ/видео.html ], solos and comps on "Luminol," on the of the more jazz-tinged tracks from the Wilson's solo work [ruclips.net/video/wYfQ1I-VV7M/видео.html ], and his unbelievable Moog solo in Home Invasion/Regret #9 (seven minutes in) [ruclips.net/video/-tajHRP9Cm8/видео.html].
David. As other people have already said, if you don't know Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, boy are you in for a treat! ;-) Huge catalogue of music, going back almost 30 years. This song is about as commercial an offering as you'll get, but melodies, harmonies and top quality musicianship is a given. I envy you exploring all of this for the first time!
Anesthetize live from Tilburg, Hatesong live version from Chicago, Arriving somewhere but not here live from Chicago and so on...so many good songs from them to react to
Your playing reminded me of a song by the band Riverside called "We got used to us". Porcupine Tree and Riverside are two of my favorite progressive rock bands of all time.
When I saw Porcupine Tree in September I was mesmerized with the way Steven interacts with the other musicians in the band almost like a play along conductor
Welcome to the wonderful world of SW, the greatest composer you've never heard of. You should hear the studio version of this track and oh so many more. Steven is as an accomplished composer, engineer, and singer songwriter as you're likely to find, among his or any other generation. I envy you're being at the beginning of your journey into exploring his music. Through SW I have discovered too many amazing musicians to count. He attracts talent like nobody I've ever seen. Enjoy the trip, through PT, his solo stuff, and side projects. Always a treat to see a musician find music worth listening to, you've got my sub!
Just got back from PT's concert in Sweden and they played this.. WOW... Go see them live if you can. (also again, great commentary/analyze, thank you!)
It's 7/4, the drummer (Gavin Harrison) from PT usually makes paterns with "weird" times signatures (like 11/8, for example) and then he send to the other mates to create on the patern
Welcome to the most rewarding musical rabbit hole ever. I took my son to P.T. for his first concert on his 15th Birthday and changed his life forever. Whether it’s P.T., or Steven’s solo project, they are equally as amazing and I would argue it will be hands down the best new music you’ve never heard. Enjoy!!
David, love your reactions. You're an amazing musician and talent. PT/Steven Wilson is a deep rabbit hole, and one you of all people need to go down. For pure live band talent, watch the live version of "Anesthetize" (as many have recommended). If you're upto the task, and willing to have your heart shattered I recommend 3 of Steven Wilson's videos. It's not just "basic music video bullshit", it's high art. Stunning stuff. 1) The Raven that Refused to Sing (beautiful, sad) 2) Drive Home (heart wrenching, with Guthrie Govan on guitars) 3) Routine (maybe the best music video I have ever seen - watch only if you're willing to cry live on a reaction). You'll LOVE them all. For other Porcupine Tree, I'd start with "Trains" and "Arriving Somewhere" and "Blackest Eyes", but it's all great. Ironically, as great as "Sound of Muzak" is, it's really kind of a B- in terms of PT's catalog. That's how good they are.
Enjoyable, but this isn't Porcupine Tree. It's Steven Wilson solo with some, admittedly, great musicians. The live Porcupine Tree version is even more amazing.
Pls pls pls do Anesthetize live by Porcupine Tree. And as you already know, this performance is from the lead singers solo career played with different musicians
"The best band you've never heard of". SW and PT are exceptional, musical, heartfelt, important, creative, awesome and it's really easy to fanboy. SW / PT have brought one of my most significant music peaks over the last 20 years. Enjoy! :)
I said the same. I ran into them this year. I am addicted. Are you doing more? Trains. Anesthetize. Blackest Eyes. Halo. Arriving Somewhere Not Here. The latest album? I have seen them live three months ago in Amsterdam and I still haven’t landed
You should definitely listen to some actual Porcupine Tree. There's an argument to be made that their actual drummer (who isn't playing here) is the best living drummer right now and they have some real bangers. Anesthetize or Arriving Somewhere would be perfect reactions. Keep up the great content!
Whatever Steven Wilson does is high artistic level. Nick Beggs on the bass and Craig Blundell on drums are one of my favorite rhythm sections. I am still sorry for not visiting their show in Frankfurt in that year. I should have gone.
So this is not Porcupine Tree playing, this is Steven Wilson solo performance with backing musicians. Porcupine Tree from Tilburg live DVD is a far more fantastic performance.
I love that you we immediately hooked into them... Steve Wilson is a very prolific British musician, and Porcupine Tree have been going for 20 years... The keyboard player is a long time member and he used to be in the band Japan... I think they might be touring the new album now. I'm just about to go and see if you have reacted to Anaesthetise yet. If you haven't then please do...Keep on Rocking
I am a huge fan of the metal band Opeth. On a behind the scenes of the recording of a couple of the albums, I was like who is this amazing hands on producer they are working with? It was Steven Wilson which led me down the path of his bands and solo careers. Amazing all-round musician and incredible producer and sound engineer.
I was watching Porcupine Tree live just last week, so perfect timing with this, hahaha. I can just say that I love PT/Steven Wilson’s music so much, they/he are one of my favorites. I recommend you to check out Arriving Somewhere but Not Here, Anesthetize, Halo, Even Less, Blackest Eyes from PT and Luminol, Ancestral, Drive Home, Routine or Pariah from Steven Wilson’s solo albums.
If you want to see Porcupine Tree live, unfortunately you will probably have to travel to London on November 11. They are doing their first tour for 12 years and it's been touted by the band as possibly their last ever. Steven Wilson will continue to tour solo, thankfully.
You really have to explore Porcupine Tree and the solo work of their lead singer Steven Wilson. They are amazing live and have just returned from a 13 year hiatus to produce an album and are currently on tour. Check out, ‘Trains’, ‘Arriving Somewhere but not here’, ‘ Hatesong’, ‘Fear of a blank planet’ and ‘Anaesthetise’ from Porcupine tree. ‘Luminol’, ‘ Refuge’, ‘Ancestral’ , ‘Routine’, ‘Deform to form a star’, ‘Postcard’, ‘Detonation’ by Steven Wilson. Most if not all are available live on YT as good quality recordings with brilliant musicianship and believe me when I say these only scratch the surface of the two amazing catalogues. You are not alone in not knowing this band or Steven Wilson but whilst I have met many who did not know them I am yet to meet anyone who once exposed to their music did not go hunting for more.
Porcupine tree are my favourite band of all time... this isn't them but I still love it. there will no doubt be plenty of great suggestions for PT songs to react to, so instead I'll recommend ''Blood on the tightrope'' by Lunatic soul. A band (or rather project) I got into largely thanks to the PT rabbit hole, this one is particularly jazzy
You've got to get on Frost* then!!! The drummer who plays in this video, Craig Blundell has also played with them. Try anything off of Falling Satellites (which is my favourite album of theirs), my personal recommendation is Heartstrings, but anything on that album will tickle your tastebuds. It was the sound of my childhood, my dad's a huge prog rock fan. Defo check that out!!!
Once you've gone down the porcupine tree hole of wonder and musical Bliss, check out Steven Wilson's solo work with songs such as The Raven That Refused to Sing, Ancestral, and Routine.
Wow! This is the first song I listened from them as well, back in 2014, and it totally blew my mind! They are in my top 5 bands of all time. You should do a 6by of them and of Steven Wilson's ( the singer ) personal work as well. Moreover, may I suggest you should check out Nine Inch Nails and as a first song to react to I'd recommend "Everyday it's exactly the same". Love your reactions! Peace & love from Romania!
I liked your reaction. However, the person who teed this up for you should actually give you Porcupine Tree when he tells you he's giving you Porcupine Tree. Their drummer, Gavin Harrison, is a legend and this drum arrangement is one if his signature pieces. It isn't right to be introduced to it by another drummer. IMHO
Yeah its not P/T only Steven Wilson, but I gotta give it to the other musicians, they are great, especially the drummer, haven't noticed him not being Gavin at first which says a lot
I hope in the time since this was recorded you've taken the opportunity to explore a bit more of Steven Wilson, both solo and with Porcupine Tree. He's a unique talent to be sure. *I* love that you discuss and break down the chord structure. Subbed - let's see what else you're into. :) Also, while I've listened to this song thousands of times, I've not heard Steven's solo band play it before. The mix really seems to accentuate that Hammond organ sound more than I'm used to, and I thought it sounded really good. Normally I only notice it in a couple of isolated spots.
If you were not familiar with Porcupine Tree, you may not be familiar with Dream Theater. Try Breaking All Illusions (live from the Breaking The Fourth Wall DVD filmed in the Boston Opera House). It’s a bunch of Berkeley and Juilliard guys playing Prog/Metal.
David!!! How do you not know about Porcupine Tree? What you added on piano made the song better! 😂 I always comment too soon….I need to wait until the end. You said exactly what I was thinking.
Great reaction, I enjoyed seeing a knowledgeable musician jump into the song a little and provide some info on what he thinks is making the song work really well so thanks for that. Steven Wilson is a great musician but also a respected producer who's worked with many well known bands. As far as I know totally self taught so I guess a prodigy. The band itself is renowned for playing live shows which are as well done or better than the album versions. I can attest, they are a tremendous live act but the just did their first US tour in 12 years and unless they do a second leg I'm afraid you'll have a hard time catching a show.
Welcome to the club! As I always say, (the real 😉) "Porcupine Tree is almost always better LIVE!” Check PT’s live video concerts from Chicago (Arriving Somewhere), and Tilburg (Anesthetize)…..
You see that the solo played from the performer and not from the main guitarist? You see with how much relaxing Steven plays the solo? It's amazing and i believe he choose to play it himself cause of the mood he didn't want a lead guitarist put there any crazy solo stuff with tapping and fast hand techniques only the right mood catching as he imagine and writing it!!
I heard these guys last year for the first time and had exactly the same thought " How the hell do I not know about these guys?!?!" You should definately check out "Anesthetize"( it's long but totally worth it), "fear of a blank planet", " Arriving somewhere, but not here" or "Harridan" The live in tilburg versions are excellent ( not harridan, that's newer), there are a ton more songs worth checking out but those are some of my favourites. 🤟🤟
Too bad this is from Steve's solo tour and not really the band itself, these are different musicians. Not to take anything from Craig Blundell, he is an fantastic drummer, but nobody plays the tune the way Gavin Harrison does.
Don't feel badly about them flying under your radar - they had a relatively small but devoted fanbase for some time but just never hit the bigtime. I had never heard of them until just a couple years ago. They're being appreciated much more now. Steven Wilson has churned out so much music over the years it's uncanny and almost inhuman. Gavin Harrison is, quite seriously, one of the most incredible drummers on the planet. He's a beast.
Of all the incredible performances of this song you chose the one that isn't Porcupine Tree. Major meh. Good way to showcase how much of the magic this loses especially without Gavin Harrison.
great performance here but yeah, this isn't the full band of Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson, the lead singer and lead guitarist, was on tour for his solo record in 2018 and this was his touring band. I'm surprised how well this drummer kept up with Gavin Harrison's incredible drumming from the album. Harrison is one of my favorite drummers of all time and this guy an stage did a really great job.
try "the pineapple thief", Gavin harrison (porcupine's drummer) plays there. its a similar atmosmphere to porcupine, but it has it´s own uniqueness and its a great band
If you want to see great musicians in his bands, check out Luminal from mexico city: ruclips.net/video/EM-5EBAJ7tA/видео.html Its stunning how good they are.
I see Gavin on the drums, so I'm not 100% sure you know exactly what you're talking about LOL
@@HillHunterME 😄 but where do you see Gavin? I only see Craig
@@PorcupineWreck Its Craig Blundell on drums you are correct!
@@HillHunterME I think you are hallucinating my man. :)
And Steven Wilson is the only founding member so he technically is porcupine tree
Anesthetize is a must. That song is quite an experience, would love to see a reaction. Hope you get into the Steven Wilson rabbit hole.
Anesthetize, then Open Car, then everything else...Because you WILL want to hear them all...LOL
So glad to see Steven Wilson here. He's the creative force behind Porcupine Tree. This performance is actually from one of his solo tours. Oh if I could go back to when I first heard the band and was so naïve to the life changing musical journey I was about to enter.

Porcupine Tree song (written by Steven Wilson) being played on the SW solo tour with non-Porcupine Tree performers (besides SW) rocking the jam….

Really hope to see more PT, Steven Wilson and prog metal/rock here 👍
Porcupine Tree are great! You might also enjoy Biffy Clyro!
You're really good at putting names on musical techniques. Subscribe
Yes, I agree with your assessment.
Love Porcupine Tree, and Gavin Harrison the drummer.
Me too!where have I been.Only this year,have I found Steve Wilson.I’ve gone to Watership Down Heaven ! Rabbit Hole’s until I Die.
No Gavin Harrison, no party.
I heard these guys last year for the first time and had exactly the same thought " How the hell do I not know about these guys?!?!"
You should definately check out "Anesthetize"( it's long but totally worth it), "fear of a blank planet", " Arriving somewhere, but not here" or "Harridan"
The live in tilburg versions are excellent ( not harridan, that's newer), there are a ton more songs worth checking out but those are some of my favourites. 🤟🤟
porcupune tree - Anesthetise pleaseee
I really like Craig Blundell, but you need to find a live version with Gavin Harrison on drums.
The true Porcupine Tree sound is produced only when the all the original band members are playing. I'm dropping out of this video at 4:01.
Can't wait you discover opeth :)
great performance here but yeah, this isn't the full band of Porcupine Tree.
Yes yes yes yes Porcupine Tree ! What a great band ! You must react to Train by them, gorgeous harmonies and more !
Rispek earned.
try "the pineapple thief", Gavin harrison (porcupine's drummer) plays there. its a similar atmosmphere to porcupine, but it has it´s own uniqueness and its a great band
100% final fantasy vibes
If you want to see great musicians in his bands, check out Luminal from mexico city: ruclips.net/video/EM-5EBAJ7tA/видео.html Its stunning how good they are.
Love PT ! Try Spock's Beard....Snow
This is Steven Wilson solo, not Porcupine Tree. ✌🏻
Dude, you loved these guys 9 months ago. You haven't done Anaesthetize yet?
