Porcupine Tree had some insane bass lines with Colin. I really love Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled, it has that interlude that follows with the sample speech by the Heaven Gate's dude... Colin really makes me chill with that fretless lines.
Regarding odd times, I just listened to an interview with Gavin the other day on "In My Drum Room", and he said, "I never ever count to 15." He said that he breaks it down into smaller pieces, but he also said something very much like what you said here. He said once he finds a pattern that he's happy with the bass drum and the back beat, then that becomes like a "melody" that holds the rest of it together. Or sometimes he's zeroed in on some other part of the track like a keyboard part or whatever, and that's his roadmap. It's a good interview. Worth a listen.
I saw a video where he said something similar. When he's experimenting and jamming and coming up with patterns or grooves, he has no idea what the time signature is. He just feels it. It isn't until after the fact that he counts it out and figures out what the time signature is.
I don't know if it makes for the most interesting video, but Steven Wilson's song "Luminol" is my absolute favorite bass line and is probably the reason I play bass today.
Thanks for this one. Big PT fan here. Kudos for mentioning Gavin's drumming, even though your focus is on the BASS. I.m.h.o, Gavin's drumming should never go unnoticed or unmentioned. Check out 'Bonnie the Cat' from 'The Incident' album. Some truly spectecular Gavin/Colin unusualness going on there, as well as amazing vocal delivery by Steven. There is also a gorgeously _weird_ stop-motion video for that song. ruclips.net/video/UI7RJkCXyq8/видео.html
You're right about just "feeling" the music. I once did "Money" by Pink Floyd for karaoke. After I was done, the person running it told me how impressed with it they were. "It's not an easy time signature to do". "I grew up on this stuff. I just know it". Though sometimes I do like to try and figure out random ones on occasion. More of a test of my abilities than anything.
Probably the most well-known 7/4 song of all time. They had Chris Parry play the sax solo in 7/8. The bridge is 4/4 though I think. Feeling it is so crucial. As musicians or singers, if we can't feel it then how can others feel it?
I love your take on Gavin's musical drumming! I myself like to call him a musical surgeon! He does the most complex musical stuff I've ever heard and just make it sound so simple! It's the peak of creativity and it shows how he has mastered his own sense of drumming. It's the same as a poet saying a thousand words with a single line. Not many people are able to do that and Gavin has certainly proved himself continuously in whichever projects he has worked in! His playing is so melodic, his fills are just the right amount of notes, and everything else he does is always on the point! Loved this video, and keep more PT coming! ❤❤
I am surprised you never coverd any of the Stone Temple Pilots songs. Robert Deleo is incredible musician, he plays incredible jazz and funk inspired basslines in a Rock band.
thanks for reminding me I need to jam on this one again! Also I feel like the modal approach you touched on is used in a lot of alternative sounding songs across genres, very cool.
All great points about Gavin and his abilities. Danny Carey is the other drummer I think of who can camouflage odd time sigs in what feels very approachable straight time sig.
For your next punk one you gotta check out "Like the Angel" by Rise Against! Such a good song, great band, AND it's the same bass player from 88 Fingers Louie!!!
Please listen to Pinback for bass forward progressive indie rock. Minus the bear for guitar forward progressive indie rock. If you like this song you're guaranteed to love both bands.
I good example for your time signature discussion is Master of Puppets. Like does anything think they're counting 21/32? No way. It was a feel thing the whole time.
I love PT and Halo. But when I heard ''I got a halo around my head'' for the first time it triggered a memory: Kikky Dee's ''I got the music in me" (1974)
With regards to fretless bass, tell me Mark, have you ever heard of a gentleman called Mick Karn? Probably my favorite fretless bassist of all time, mostly because of how quirky and weird some of his basslines were.
One of the unsung heroes of the Prog Rock genre is Jonas Reingold. He's ABSOLUTELY insane. He's one of the most melodic and diverse bass players I've ever heard. He's Chris Squire and Jaco in one, plus some. Karmakanic - Wheel of Life Kaipa - Angling Feelings Karmakanic - Do U Tango? The Flower Kings - One Whole Half The Flower Kings - Silent Inferno The Flower Kings - Rumble Fish Twist The Flower Kings - I Am the Sun, Pt. 1
Less "easy" bass driven songs: Elephant Gym - Finger Tera Melos - System Preferences If you want to get closer to prog try out: Mars Volta - Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt
@@LowEndUniversity That's such a hard question haha! Personally I'd like Fix the Error but if I had to guess what BTBAM fans would want overall I'd say Melting City or Disease, Injury, Madness.
I mean the guitar is definitely playing that entire bridge. They're just using a more palm-muted staccato part to contrast with the more open sustain-y part back and forth.
I haven't come across ANY channel doing a Porcupine Tree reaction in any capacity before this. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
I absolutely love the intro to "Hate Song"
Porcupine Tree had some insane bass lines with Colin. I really love Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled, it has that interlude that follows with the sample speech by the Heaven Gate's dude... Colin really makes me chill with that fretless lines.
Marshall Applewhite aka "Do." I love that song & it's so great live too. The basslines on Hatesong & the upright Russia On Ice are awesome too.
Steven Wilson's solo stuff features the amazing Nick Beggs on bass and Chapman Stick. Well worth checking out.

This was one of my favorite songs they did on the Closure/Continuation tour
That’s the first song from Porcupine Tree I listened ever, and because of it I began to enjoy them and prog in general, so…
Love it!
Porcupine Tree is one of my favorite bands that no one has ever heard of. Thanks for doing this.
I pretty much grew up on PT and this album, wish Colin Edwin came back man I love his playing so much. Great vid as always.
Nate Navarro did a great job on the tour (before he had to bail and was replaced with a backing track), but he's not Colin.
So glad you did this! Imo the In Absentia/Deadwing era is PT at it's best.
I don't know if it makes for the most interesting video, but Steven Wilson's song "Luminol" is my absolute favorite bass line and is probably the reason I play bass today.

This is great. You're discovering bands I love, I'm now discovering bands you love. Adrian did amazing work with nine inch nails.

The one who can is NDV,; Nick D'Virgilio . Also, a drummer with lots of feel and techniques.
Very helpful seeing the tab and staff notes as you explained what was going on. Appreciate the extra work for the video.
Glad it was helpful!!
I think that piano part works perfectly because you get kind of that vibe from Lazarus before and it's almost foreboding to Arriving Somewhere next.
Great point! Kind of forgot about the context there.
Love the prog stuff! I’d love to hear you breakdown some of Steven Wilson’s solo stuff from Hand. Cannot. Erase. or The Raven that refused to sing.
I am surprised you never coverd any of the Stone Temple Pilots songs. Robert Deleo is incredible musician, he plays incredible jazz and funk inspired basslines in a Rock band.

Heard of this band but never heard them before. I'm really digging it. Appreciate the introduction.
Check out the live version of "Anesthetize" recorded in Tillburg. It's here on RUclips. Frickin' amazing.
All great points about Gavin and his abilities. Danny Carey is the other drummer I think of who can camouflage odd time sigs in what feels very approachable straight time sig.

If we're making a return to the prog side of things...''Lines in the Sand'' by Dream theater would be a killer video!
Good morning, Mark! First time hearing Porcupine Tree. I’m digging it! Thanks for the introduction.
Porcupine Tree have some awesome albums. I would definitely recommend Deadwing and In Absentia as first albums to try and also Fear Of A Blank Planet
@@chrishampton1981 You CAN'T leave out Lightbulb Sun
Hey mark, could you perhaps look into rise against? The song blood to bleed has a dirty intro
Hi Mark! Great video! You should check out The Ocean - Triassic for some very interesting bass and great band and album!
With regards to fretless bass, tell me Mark, have you ever heard of a gentleman called Mick Karn? Probably my favorite fretless bassist of all time, mostly because of how quirky and weird some of his basslines were.
clearly inspired by Faith No More's Everything Is Ruined, nice!
Hate to say it....but Colin's playing is Like Butter!!!!
Should check out the band Quicksand. Slip was amazing but any of their albums are great. They've got new stuff as well.
One of the unsung heroes of the Prog Rock genre is Jonas Reingold. He's ABSOLUTELY insane. He's one of the most melodic and diverse bass players I've ever heard.

Kaipa - Angling Feelings
Karmakanic - Do U Tango?
The Flower Kings - One Whole Half
The Flower Kings - Silent Inferno
The Flower Kings - Rumble Fish Twist
The Flower Kings - I Am the Sun, Pt. 1
Less "easy" bass driven songs:
Elephant Gym - Finger
Tera Melos - System Preferences
If you want to get closer to prog try out:
Mars Volta - Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt
Needs Flea era Mars Volta on here
He has to get some mars volta on the channel. Too many great songs to name but would love to see him tackle Day of the Baphomets.
Check out The Supervillians - Robots album.
I love the punk content, but I agree Mark…can’t wait for Rivers Of Nihil to bring the prog metal heat to the channel!
Coming next month, my friend!!!
Gavin is a god!!
Hi Mark!
Hello there!
As far as ska goes there’s a song by the mighty boss tones called someday I suppose that I used to dance to as a teenager. Maybe you could do that!
Good call, it’s coming in a few weeks!
Awwe, thank you! You’re the best! Sorry I haven’t been commenting, been waiting for some Prog stuff.
I’m back to suggest some Tribal Tech. “The Necessary Blonde” or “The Big Wave” because Gary Willis deserves some love!
The guitar is playing the whole way through the bridge. It just goes between heavily muted and unmuted.
Right - I was mainly referring to the open, heavier part.
Please do more BTBAM!!!
What song?!
@@LowEndUniversity That's such a hard question haha! Personally I'd like Fix the Error but if I had to guess what BTBAM fans would want overall I'd say Melting City or Disease, Injury, Madness.
Noted!
I mean the guitar is definitely playing that entire bridge. They're just using a more palm-muted staccato part to contrast with the more open sustain-y part back and forth.
Yeah, I should've specified a bit clearer - meant to say the unmuted, really heavy part!
I must be approaching a dozen requests for NRA by Beng Beng Cocktail 🙃
crimpshrine! tomorrow or bricks!
Существует только две группы на которые у меня аллергия. Porcupine Tree одна из них
When are you gonna do MY PICK?????? AVAIL TAKEN!
