I dunno lol ive loved them for 15 years tho and they remind me a lot of like an even more complicated Pink Floyd ya know? That complex bridge. You'd love Dream Theater if you like these guys btw !!
This was such a great time in porcupine tree’s history and Steven Wilson’s history. I love his solo work but this time of his creativity was just amazing.
yeah you can really hear the Pink Floyd influences and sooo many other bands and styles in this one. Im hearing Rush, I'm hearing heavy metal, im hearing shoegaze, im hearing ambient, its sooo many flavors of great music all in one epic. It is a goddamn SHAME that Prog style rock isn't more popular. I love the way steven and PT have this over all style of "building" the song with so many pieces rather than just dumping the best riffs in the front of the song etc. Its all about picking the best meat and the best veggies, and the perfect seasoning. Gordon Ramsey would love these guys i bet.
@@DekkarJr You don’t need a degree in music to make great music. Most progressive rock was made by rather regular people who just had a bit more passion for music.
Indeed. More or less. They just need to stop being "likeable" or the "wide public" favorite and etc. Then, they will not be "Porcupine Tree", especially Steven Wilson one of a kind anymore
I am really glad that you gave credit to the Bassist "Colin Edwin"...He is generally not given any credit in other reviewers videos. At last someone noticed. :)
Fun fact: Steven Wilson wrote a ghost story screenplay and this song was supposed to be in the film soundtrack, but they failed to fund the project so it (and some other songs) was then recorded for the album. I'm glad they did because this is one of my absolute favorite songs. Had this DVD pretty much since it came out close to 15 years ago and this still gives me chills every time. Seeing Suzi really get into it made me happy. It's just a perfectly composed song that has everything I could want from a song. Cheers :)
What an epic. That bridge was soooo badass. Your right about the bassist too. He had so many layers in the background. These guys are like genius level juliard style musicians.
It was so much fun watching you while you where watching/listening to this song!! Your faces went exactly as I hoped for, haha. And Suzie’s face during the last 2 minutes... priceless!! Prog on!! 🤘
Suzie, 9:00 The note you love so much is an E which is functioning as a suspended 9th of the predominant D minor. Ending melodic phrases on unresolved sus notes give colour and emotional depth to music, and take the listener to an unexpected place. You couldn't explain what it was about choosing that note to end the phrase that pleased you so much, but you don't need an education in music theory to feel it... just a musical ear, which you clearly have.
You truly capture the essence of these guys!!! It’s truly exquisite music….all these guys are true craftsmen of their art….so layered,so dynamic,so complex!
This is a top 10 song for me, up there with Bohemian Rhapsody, Comfortably Numb, Stairway and so on.. You can listen to it 100 times and STILL find new things in the arrangement. It's just a fantastic song that for me takes the listener on a progressive musical journey that have so many layers
Suzie’s comment is amazingly perceptive. I think that this piece has some relationship to a movie that never materialized. Enlighten me O wise commenters.
Such an amazing DVD ,John Wesley does most of the intricate guitar work ,which allows Steven Wilson to ply his vocals ,and secondary keys work ,then as the build crescendos, Gavin on drums ,Colin on bass ,and Richard on keys blow up these incredible volcanic melodies. By far the best lineup for Porcupine Tree.
The look of total bliss on your faces says it all. Porcupine Tree live is just perfection, keep working through their catalog and you will not be disappointed. Love your work guys :)
It was awesome to see Susie be so passionate about a song. I am glad it was Porcupine Tree that did it. I had the pleasure of seeing them live three times in Los Angeles. Every show was excellent from start to finish. John Wesley, second guitar player is a phenomenal player.
Wow this gives me massive Floyd vibes in terms first and last thirds. There is no better compliment. Great review as well guys, love how expressive your faces are.

Great suggestion Charles. The entire DVD of this Chicago concert is excellent. I suggest that you checkout Trains, Lazarus and all the other great songs on this concert DVD. Great reaction guys!
I think Steven did a great job with the solo here, I actually prefer it to the studio version. Where I notice the difference is more in the heavy middle section, Mikael makes those riffs even nastier (which makes sense).
One of my favorites. One of the few songs that I like the studio version better. You need to hear Hate Song live, Cheating the Polygraph live and absolutely Anesthetize live.
Hitherto unknown fact, in the studio version the melodic middle section was Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth (Steven Wilson's best mate). Can really tell you guys love this track. Suzie - you have the cutest nose wrinkle when you smile :) Recommend some of Wilson's solo stuff. Check out Home Invasion / Regret #9 live - jaw dropping stuff
Keyboard player is a chap by the name of Richard Barbieri. He's about 10 years older than the rest of the band and has an interesting musical background. He's probably most famous as a member of prominent early 80's new romantic band, Japan.
Greetings from Brazil! Porcupine Tree ... wonderful band, the band I like most after Rush ... because both are over ... and I have this show on DVD: for me this song is their "masterpiece" ... of this very one show I recommend the songs "Blackest Eyes", the instrumental "Mother and Child Divided" (this one with a very "heavy metal" feel), "The Sound of Muzak", and the soft "Trains" that ends the show ... but I really recommend watching the entire show!
Love the new intro,So Good, just like this live performance by PT, really wish that they would get back together and do some new music but I don't think that is going to happen, but we can hope 🤞

Long story how it happened, but I got lost in Oklahoma at 2 or 3 in the morning--no map or GPS, no towns for many miles in all directions.
