Correction: @10:15 regarding the ships distance, I overlooked that Jeran's measurement will be in nautical miles, however is figure is still over 700 miles shorter than the great circle route
I'm not so sure. Jeran's web site showing the ship's speed in 'mph' "miles per hour". Ships do often work with nautical miles, but then it would show speed in 'knots', the customary units for 'nautical miles per hour' versus 'mph' for 'statue miles per hour.'. It doesn't really change the outcome, but I think that site was showing 'mph' as converted.
ocean currents also influence how many miles travelled.
@@mrcadoia that's why there are 2 speed measurements: STW (speed through the water) and SOG (speed over ground).
in aviation it is even more confusing because air density decreases with altitude, which is why IAS (indicated airspeed), TAS (true airspeed) and GS (ground speed) are all different. it is possible to have less than 300 knots IAS but more than 600 knots GS, with TAS somewhere inbetween

Desk globes debunk FE into the dust. They are the only shape that is linearly scaled. A globe can only scale to a globe.

I recently left a flat earther stumped and instead of answering my questions she stated well there’s nothing you can do to change my mind. And walked away. That in a nutshell is their mindset.
Most people with irrational beliefs that they've invested a lot of years believing in have got the same mindset. I.e. religion, creationism or young earthers

it's a good exercise sometimes to pick a belief or opinion you have and think about what evidence would it take for you to change it. If the answer is none, you might have a problem.

You can always be sure that any flat earther claims can be boiled down to: "You're doing it wrong so you can produce the result you wanted."
And that's why they never show the math for what they believe (if they could even understand math beyond kindergarten levels) and refuse to tell you what calculators they used to get X result, and instead "Just do your own research!"
Well, really all conspiracy theory claims, including flat-earth, boil down to "you're being lied to." At the end of the day, that's how they are able to rationalize away any and all evidence to the contrary.
They think theyre smarter than steven hawking which was arguably the smartest man in recent history, its not that Surprising they cant do math. I mean seriously, he tried to debunk it using a calculator on the internet that did all the math for him, and he still got it wrong somehow. (Or he intentionally got it wrong, because if he did it right it would prove him wrong. But hey, thats just a wacky conspiracy 😊)
@@5peciesunkn0wn All calculators are of course infiltrated with NASA code, which modifies them to do calculations in such a way that they always fit a globe, so the "truth" that the earth is flat is hidden. You simply can't trust calculators (and math in general, I'm sure math was invented by a government agency).

What amazes me the most with this flat Earth nonsense is that these people think that every sailor, every pilot, everyone working in aerospace engineering, every physicist, every hobby astronomer, and so many more, are in on this conspiracy. And why? Well, that's never really explained.
They like to pull the “compartmentalization” card but that leads to some hilarious implications. That means that tons of people are utterly incompetent in their field but what happens when people switch fields. People clearly know how to make buildings, cars, computers, etc. So what happens if one of them goes into aerospace? Or what happens when a supposedly incompetent aerospace engineer leaves for another engineering field?
@@AM-rd9pu the misunderstanding about all this is that it is not a conspiracy. No one is lying. It’s about no one can prove or have never thought about the shape. It’s about not knowing. Pilot, sailors etc won’t be able to know even if it was a rectangle.
also surveyors, a lot of the military (missiles, snipers, etc), the population of the southern hemisphere, a lot of photographers, communications infrastructure engineers. short wave radio operators.
theres a lot of jobs and skills that use the curvature of the earth, at some point its such a ridiculous amount of people, more people are going to be "in on it" than not
@@Aedi no one is in on it. That’s misleading. No one knows and don’t pay attention to it. You have a list, go through that list and start asking people who work in those fields. You are assuming they know anything about the entirety of the shape. Perhaps there is some curvature only because some large land mass is a shape of a mound. The earth is not completely flat. There are areas where it has some “curvature”. But might not be a full spherical shape.
Sailors would know, physicists wouldn’t know, hobby astronomers wouldn’t know. It about not knowing more than “being in on it”. No one is in on it.

Jeran is trying hard to figure out how to make his channel into a debate channel. He knows Earth isn't flat. He's gotten used to sitting on his butt and getting paid, and doesn't want that to end.

I recall when he filmed the ISS passing in front of the moon. He removed the globe coordinates from the film to avoid doxxing. Nothing you would do if you believed it was flat.
This is true for SO many flat earthers. I can't count how many times (other than in the Behind the Curve documentary) that Mark Sargent has been asked if he would admit the Earth was a globe and give up his role as a leader of flat earth, and he never gives a straight answer. Ever. I don't think Mark was ever a flat earther. He's an attention seeker. He love the notoriety, the money that seems to just keep flowing his way. There's NO WAY he would ever admit that he isn't a real flat earther. And I truly believe the same is true with Jeran.
The ironic thing is that if he did suddenly become honest and admit he was wrong, his channel would actually grow and could become a debate channel.
But narcissists never admit they are wrong and all flerfs are narcissists.

Jeran seems like a half decent person compared to most of them, so fair play to him. It is quite funny that he has been essentially showing the earth to be spherical since at least the CoolHardLogic days and doesn't show any signs of giving up yet.

But Jeran's explanation makes no sense. He said he took the photos, so how could he lose his channel to a false copyright strike from Bart Sibrel? And what were the two other strikes from Sibrel about? Is he saying he stole content from Sibrel twice before?

I've always felt Jeran is actually one of the smarter flat earthers, his problem is that he never learned to do/accept maths, and his attitude of rejecting knowledge which he perceives as coming from others. If he understood the maths and could do it competently, I think he would quickly accept the globe earth.

Flat earthers and cultists have one thing in common, they aren't quitters. Even against insurmountable evidence, their pride or programming just won't allow them to change their thinking.
And the programming is so cunning and deceitful that it gets the individual to blame others for the very thing that the individual is doing themselves.
A flat-earther states that all non flat-earthers are brainwashed and prideful - but the truth is the reverse. It's the ability to self-diagnose and to see that error and flaws in oneself that prevents this unhealthily cycle of blaming others for the very evil that one is practicing or promoting - by believing they are doing good.
Better to be in the flat earth cult then the trump cult.

You *cannot* transform a curved surface into a flat one, or vice versa, without cuts, creases and distortions (check out Gauss's Remarkable Theorem for a proof of this). This is why there is no such thing as an accurate flat map of the whole flat earth.
This is doubly damning for flerfs. If the earth really was flat then all measurements of the positions of places ever made were made on a flat earth. It would then be child's play to draw an accurate map of the whole flat earth, and impossible to draw one of the whole earth wrapped around a globe (try wrapping a ball in a sheet of paper to see what I mean).
Yet no accurate flat earth map exists and we use accurate globe maps for long distance navigation every day and have done so for centuries.

I have never owned that sort of map. I have a few road atlases and OS maps that cover most of the country.
My great grandfather was a merchant sailor and later a ships captain. I never met him, but I have read his accounts of sailing cargo from England to Australia and the navigational challenges they faced. He would leave England, sail south then head east, past the Cape of Good Hope, across the Indian Ocean to arrive in South Australia. Then after departing, continue east, across the pacific, past Cape Horn and then turn north for a run up the Atlantic and back home to England. But I guess it was all lies, made up stories to trick us into thinking the earth is a globe. Damn, I never thought my own ancestor would be such a diabolical manipulator.

I personally was on a ship that sailed a similar route. We went from New Zealand across the Pacific, through the Panama Canal, and across the Atlantic to England, and then came back down the coast of Africa, round the Cape of Good Hope, across to Australia, then to New Zealand. I've also flown from New Zealand to Europe and back multiple times. And I can go out and measure that the distance between lines of longitude in New Zealand is smaller than would be the case if the earth were flat but matches the globe predictions. But I guess I'm lying too.
Just waiting to see what these stoneagers are going to make of this week's eclipse, both the path and this eclipse itself. Witnesed live by hundreds of millions of people, recorded by billions of photos, videos, TV cameras etc.
these guys are actively dumber than stone agers. Those myths at least recognize the sun and moon have to go *under* the Earth to make sense of how the sun and moon...vanish over the horizon and get cut in half.
And predicted well in advance, with publicly available math based on a globe earth.

Amazingly, I have seen quite a few flerfers on social media claiming that the eclipse wasn't even real, and all the millions of people who watched it were somehow tricked by the special glasses they were "told to wear". Really, you couldn't make it up.

Sabine Hossenfelder has the best flat earth response in my opinion. Without addressing any of the arguments directly she essentially said that among the particular flat earthers that insist they are operating on purely empirical, scientific observations, their claim that the science that proves a globe is not personally verifiable by them directly....there is an intentional cognitive dissonance in ignoring any actual evidence gathered by other people, that refutes their claims. Sabine's excellent analysis concluded thusly: "Flat Earthers will eventually figure out the earth is round. It just might take 1,000 years for them to re-invent modern science to their satisfaction."
sabine's words seem great ... except that she completely ignores the fact (fully documented) that ALL flat earthers are crooks, and they are running a FRAUD.
I thought that was one of the worst responses I've ever seen. She's absolutely lying abotu them operating on scientific principles and openly lying them about the globe not being personally verifiable with direct observations. It's like she's selling out science just for clicks and likes. Just like with the nazi transphobia.
Hossenfelder didn't do herself any favours whatsoever with that poorly thought out excuse for a response. There are plenty of flat earth 'believers' who have tested the science of the globe, repeatedly, and they simply reject the findings. If she'd bothered to address any of their pitiful 'arguments' then she'd have known this.

The FE movement isn't about the shape of the earth. They couldn't care less about that. It's a sort of stillborn reactionary populist movement. IMHO one of the primary drivers of it is increasing economic inequality/declining standard of living/falling life expectancy, etc. I hardly ever hear (maybe some have, it's not like I've watched everything) credentialed science content creators even consider this. People don't believe the earth is round because they've done the math and made observations. That is absurd. They (we) believe the earth is round because it's consensus reality. It's just that when people want to fan their plumage on RUclips, this isn't a very sexy thing to say--especially when you're blasting flat-earthers for lack of scientific discernment. It's possible to REINFORCE that belief with scientific education/investigation/etc. But I'm really tired of people (including many academics who I'm sure know way more philosophy of science than I do) acting as if the problem is that they simply need methodological education. "What shape is the earth" is the sort of question a doctor would ask someone to see if they have dementia. I mean, yeah, some of them probably do earnestly believe it's flat, but I think usually it's far more nuanced than that. Ugh, I'm too burnt out rn to go on. But the gist of it is that she (probably) doesn't even believe the earth is round because she conducted a dispassionate scientific investigation! Did she weight the hypotheses and reserve judgement? No! (This itself is not a criticism btw haha). I enjoy most of her videos tho. But flat earth is about mistrust of the establishment, opportunism, loneliness, etc. Doesn't matter wtf the shape of the earth is. I suspect they pick it because it's FUNDAMENTAL (literally).

They are unable to do it as putting the sun anywhere above the plane makes it impossible for the sun to set without significant parallax that isn't seen in real life

Some Flerfs are actually trying to say they have used solar filters that show the Suns angular changed throughout the day.
They will continue to deny each and every observation until there’s nothing left. Just like they had to deny gravity is real because it fully debunked flat earth. Cheers
The easiest way to debunk flat earth is to ask someone how they stand upright. Why do deaf and blind people not fall over? What what are they sensing? They'll just give totally nonsensical answers. It doesn't ever go anywhere. Same thing with the radio horizon, which is another really "DUH" thing.

Even if you aren't interested in exploring the science, all you have to do is look at the technological innovations. There's a ton of them that wouldn't work if the Earth were truly flat.
Now, compare that to how many innovations have come from flat earth believers. There are literally none.

In fairness, many early discoveries in geometry and astronomy were made by people who believed the earth was flat . . . and then they proceeded to realize that their own geometric and astronomical discoveries PROVED the earth could NOT be flat.
Do you have a camera capable of photographing sun spots? If so I have a challenge for you so that you can see for yourself the evidence that the sun is circling above earth and is not "appearing" to move due to a rotating earth.

They pretend that the globe model isn’t necessary. They say that it’s a “well known cycle”. This is partly true because you can get approximate dates and locations without using globe math, but you can’t get exact predictions without globe math.

I don't think that Jeran is a flat earther anymore. He has moderated several debates very nicely and at times his doubt about the whole flat earth idea shines through. I also think that he is the more intelligent one, I don't see how he can keep up his faith when confronted with all the globe evidence he has witnessed in these debates. I believe that the only reason that he keeps on posting flat earth nonsense is because his livelihood depends on it. Also, he is mocked by some flat earthers now already and will be obliterated by them when he switches sides (see Rachie 0000 among others).

As a physics major, I completely agree. Physics is not easy, and it disappoints me to see people labeled as idiots for common misconceptions. The ability to let go of an idea you believe in is very difficult, ESPECIALLY when it comes to conspiracy theories. So it makes total sense why someone would believe even the goofiest aspects of flat earth if they already agree with the main premise. It is easy to fall for conspiracies but it is not easy to let them go. Congratulations for escaping.

Airlines, only fly direct IF it is profitable for them. Otherwise they always pick a profitable route.
Economics is on the (huge) list of things flerfs don’t understand.
Also, an air line based in the USA or Europe is not allowed to directly connect locations outside their countries. Air France is not allowed to have a direct flight between Montréal and New York. And, that's even if such a flight is very profitable.
Charter flights are not bound by the same economic constraints as airlines. To be sure both have be profitable to stay in business. However, charters can fly from anywhere to anywhere given the limits of aircraft performance and regulations of aviation authorities.
I mention all this to remind everyone that there have been pilots who have offered to fly flerfs anywhere they want go to prove their flat Earth theories, if those flerfs come up with the cash to cover the charter expenses. I’ve not heard of any case where this offer was accepted.

Re: the speed variation Jeran omitted 2 key factors that no skilled navigator would miss.
Those would be 'set' and 'drift'. Assuming that for most of the open ocean part of the journey the ship's engine revolutions were more or less constant, wind, tides and current will have effects on the ship's speed and estimates of those effects are taken into account re: ETA.

If I was a flat-earther and posted videos to my channel proving the earth is indeed a globe, ultimately leading to a lot of people poking fun at me and calling me out, I would probably delete my videos and claim that I did it because of the same reasons he gave. Point is, he knew he looked ridiculous and had done more to hurt his narrative than support it, so he deleted everything and blamed RUclips.

Its laughable that the map thats clearly made by people to represent a globe is being used to state they are in fact making it from a flat Earth, despite those who make the map knowing exactly how it is made: from the globe.
Also laughable they're using latitudinal and longitudinal lines, which are a man made construct put on maps as proof of anything, as though if you were in space (whatever they think that is) and we'd see those lines. Instead of using land sizes that are natural and not arbitrarily distanced by humans.
I respect that he tires, but the thing I remember about the Netflix show was nothing he was doing came off as confidently aware of the math or science behind it. I'm not saying everyone who is an expert has that level of confidence but having worked in technology for 20 years I sure as hell know what I am telling clients is accurate and tell them clearly when I don't know something, but these guys often sound like they're just not sure... the other type of guys are just aggressive but anger doesn't read as confidence either.
