    magnacut is known for its strength, but there are plenty of better for edge retention, including what you have here

      I became a believer in MAGNACUT with the Fobos Teir 1 BC a truely great well made knife, spot on...This knife with this M390 took me by surprise, really stood up well...thanks for watching 2 videos today WOW...🤣

    My biggest issue with Chinese folders with M390 steel is subpar heat treats usually between 57-58 HRC, which really hurts the steels edge retention. 62 HRC would be crazy good and definitely makes this knife worth considering.
    Also Magnacut’s edge retention is similar to S35VN, this is according to the man who designed the steel (Dr. Larrin Thomas). I’m not sure who’s comparing M390’s edge retention to Magnacut… but I’ve noticed one RUclips channel (who I sometimes follow) compare Magnacut’s edge retention to Maxamet which I am skeptical of (it should be noted this was Magnacut at 62-63 HRC, most manufacturers do 59-61 HRC).
    Magnacut’s allure is that it has similar toughness to steels like 3V or Cruwear, along with very high corrosion resistance and good (not great) edge retention.

      Brother, I agree with some, but I think he was being modest, the magnicut edge retention is better than S35V when done well, the Tier 1BC really sold me on MAGNACUT in how well done it was and how slicer sharp it was after much hard use..that being said, s45v, S90 s35v are all great edge keepers, but MAGNACUT is in my humble opinion a step up....but this m390 really performed well..

      @@JoeSteel1 Yeah Magnacut with 62+ HRC is crazy. The problem is many knife manufacturers don’t heat treat it that high. Only Protech (I confirmed this with them) heat treats it to 63-64, so I would argue thats the knife to test. Cold Steel also announced they are making a Magnacut folder and I’m curious how they do.

    M390 is a big step over N690. N690 is similar to 440 steel. I have a lot of $500+ folders in M390 and it's a great pocket knife steel. Anyway, the knife you're showing is a good-looking knife and a great steel for the money. Thanks for showing a knife I don't know anything about and love seeing new knives.

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  4 месяца назад

      That's interesting to know, and yes it would appear m390 to be the better steel for smaller pocket knives while 690 would be better suited for fixed blades...I wonder if the "cryo" N690 is a better made steel as the knives WTG produces like the nomads are very good...I think it's a matter of tough vs hardness, each having its better applications...but agreed that is a good deal with this steel involved

    • @JR-5465
      @JR-5465 4 месяца назад

      N690 is melted steel whereas M390 is particle steel which is way more expensive to make. On edge retention, M390 will hold an edge 4 times longer and thats been tested not just me saying that. Cryo does add less chance of chipping and a more durable steel for sure. WTG uses it for one to keep costs down on their knives. I'm guessing if they made the Nomad EDC in M390 it would cost probably $400 and not $200. I'm not knocking N690 at all it is a decent all-around steel and much easier to sharpen. I think the knife you're reviewing is a great deal, especially with the specs you listed.@@JoeSteel1

    Looks cool Joe. Sounds awesome. Im not a steel expert but M390 should be quite a bit better than N690. Unless you are looking for toughness. For Folders M390 is a premium steel and N690 is a budget steel. Interesting it might be different for folders? Anyway, great video man ive never seen this one before.

      Thanks brother, and thanks for watching...I have used n690 with Work Tuff gear and it's very tough it performed extremelywell..
      from what I've seen...there are strengths to both steels while 390 has better edge retention 690 is tougher its Like a preference thing

    Great review! This looks like a beast! I wonder how the ZT 0357 in 20cv compares. Similar price point, and another premium steel. The only magnacut I have is the Kershaw Link, which is excellent too.
