- L.A. Breakers street dancers call out unpermitted street vendors at the Santa Monica Pier on Sunday, November 28, 2021. L.A. Breakers are permitted by the City of Santa Monica for Street Performing.
The Santa Monica Pier has a worldwide identity. The City wants to preserve our decades old wooden Pier so it can be enjoyed for years to come. Because each unpermitted butane/propane cook-cart is a potential fire hazard for the Pier, the City’s Code Enforcement, the County Health Department, and the City’s Police Department periodically conduct educational and enforcement campaigns to help keep the Pier safe. This safety focus calls to eliminate all unpermitted carts, while addressing improper hot grease and trash disposal, and unsanitary food service conditions on and immediately adjacent to the Pier.
A new emergency ordinance passed on August 24, 2021, which prohibits dumping of commercial trash in public receptacles, disposing of liquid waste in public spaces and in storm drains or on any street, sidewalk, bike path, public parking lot, public park, the beach, the Santa Monica Pier, or any public receptacle citywide, and the use of unpermitted combustible fuels on and around the Santa Monica Pier.
Street vending is restricted on the Santa Monica Pier.
All vendors need a City of Santa Monica business license and vending permit to sell any items in the City, and vendors selling food must also obtain and display a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health permit.
As part of the City’s program, sidewalk vending is restricted in certain congested, high-traffic areas to protect public safety. This includes on and around the Pier, where all vending is prohibited except the City’s existing licensed vendor cart program, and the beach, Third Street Promenade, and Palisades Park, where stationary vending is not permitted.
A new ordinance passed on August 24, 2021, prohibits any person from using any combustible fuel (including propane, butane, any other liquid gas, kerosene, steno, charcoal or wood) on the Pier (including the Pier Bridge) or within 25 feet of the Pier, for any purpose involving the fuel’s combustion including heating, lighting, or cooking without a permit from the Fire Marshal.
Violations of the new ordinance may be handled as infractions, misdemeanors, or through issuance of administrative citations, in addition, combustible fuels used in violation of the new ordinance will be subject to impound by the Fire Marshal.

The pier has to have security at the entrance not to allow unpermitted street vendors and unpermitted street performers on the pier. It makes it look very bad and ghetto. It sucks for the permitted establishments there.
Uh, don't you already know that the pier "police" knows the same thing you're suggesting, they won't do it because that would take the excitement of chasing these "vendors" all over the pier to just strolling up and down being bored, stationing adjustable entrance gates monitored by security would make too much sense (to them!)

The illegal vendors need to move away from the pier because the pier operate like an open mall and those retail shops pay big rentals, fees, and permits to operate there.
No one is stopping vendors from making a living but they need to operate away from the pier and on public parks and streets or parking lots and beach areas with no retail shops.
The illegal vendors can negotiate with retail owners on the pier to allow vendors to purchase permits flooding pier with more shops while lowering rental fees for establish retail shops on the pier with pier management and city.
The illegal vendors need to pay their fair share otherwise it’s not fair for establish retail shops on pier.

The difference between those vendors and the dancers is that the dancers are legally allowed to be there while the vendors aren’t.

I don't see why the pier business owners and permitted vendors don't go to the city council and voice what's going on there. If I was a vendor or business owner there, I'd be at those meetings and calling anyone and everyone involved with running the pier and complaining.

I'm not kidding when I tell you I personally seen a guy doing a full on BBQ and he had un cooked meat ( pork) in a clear plastic tote sitting directly in the sun last summer. He was located next to a market in an empty gas station. I could see it from were I was standing drinking my soda so I walked over to get a closer look acted like I wanted to buy some BBQ. It's just a matter of time, these food vendors are getting too bold and arrogant...until SMPD gets a Special Task Force together then do a surprise mass arrest, and confiscate and impound all of their illegal business property (after they're arrested.. if their vehicles are still parked in the beach parking lot after closing time, all their cars and vans will be towed away too...Task Force team sit around planning for all of this... before go time). The food vendors make it easier by being concentrated all in one area, and their spotters are easy to spot... even for the public to see, and I bet you undercover cops will get to them first.
Health inspectors don't take their photos for nothing, they're building profiles and cases against repeat offenders back on their computers.
It's the only way to send a message to thugs that if they don't play by the rules...this is going to stop.

They sell the same hotdog that people can buy at 7/11 or AM/PM for $1.50 just a couple blocks away...but jack up the price to $10.00

@@andymartinez1426 That's what i said, in the beginning when only a couple of them were around..I said, man that smells good, how much..."$10.00" and I said, damn does that include chips and a soda?...he said no, do you want a hotdog or not? I took a closer look, just a cheap looking hotdog... I said...not.
But later, when they started multiplying everywhere...I saw someone pushing the cart around the corner too fast, and a box fell out underneath the cart, and all the raw hotdogs with bacon wrap hit the dirty sidewalk...then the chica scooped them all back into the box and begin carting up the ramp to the pier to sell them...I thought no way in hell I'm ever buying one those hotdogs.
