Code Enforcement Officers Confiscate Food From Unpermitted Vendors at Santa Monica Pier

- Santa Monica Code Enforcement Officers in coordination with Santa Monica Police Officers and Firefighters confiscate food from unpermitted food vendors around the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, December 11, 2021. Citations were also issued. Santa Monica Fire Chief Wolfgang Knabe was present during the enforcement.
The Santa Monica Pier has a worldwide identity. The City wants to preserve our decades old wooden Pier so it can be enjoyed for years to come. Because each unpermitted butane/propane cook-cart is a potential fire hazard for the Pier, the City’s Code Enforcement, the County Health Department, and the City’s Police Department periodically conduct educational and enforcement campaigns to help keep the Pier safe. This safety focus calls to eliminate all unpermitted carts, while addressing improper hot grease and trash disposal, and unsanitary food service conditions on and immediately adjacent to the Pier.
Street vending is restricted on the Santa Monica Pier. Prior to enforcement, the City of Santa Monica has been educating and warning the unpermitted street vendors for several month.
All vendors need a City of Santa Monica business license and vending permit to sell any items in the City, and vendors selling food must also obtain and display a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health permit.
As part of the City’s program, sidewalk vending is restricted in certain congested, high-traffic areas to protect public safety. This includes on and around the Pier, where all vending is prohibited except the City’s existing licensed vendor cart program, and the beach, Third Street Promenade, and Palisades Park, where stationary vending is not permitted.
In addition, a new ordinance passed on August 24, 2021, prohibits any person from using any combustible fuel (including propane, butane, any other liquid gas, kerosene, steno, charcoal or wood) on the Pier (including the Pier Bridge) or within 25 feet of the Pier, for any purpose involving tjhe fuel’s combustion including heating, lighting, or cooking without a permit from the Fire Marshal.
Violations of the new ordinance may be handled as infractions, misdemeanors, or through issuance of administrative citations, in addition, combustible fuels used in violation of the new ordinance will be subject to impound by the Fire Marshal.

As a Mexican, I hold a differing perspective from these vendors, particularly those who show disrespect towards authorities. The strength of this nation lies in its regulations and the enforcement carried out by the police in the United States. I also hope that action can be taken to address the issue of store theft, which seems to be increasing across the country.

You would maybe see a few, now it’s dozens, most with gas burners, on a wooden pier with wooden structures, so technically it is a fire hazard, but not one I would consider dangerous. I’m still missing how any of it is racist though, would be the same outcome if you saw black, white, or Asian vendors doing this. Me personally, I could care less if they gave permits, the problem is their lack of care when it comes to handling food for the public. It’s not all of them, but MOST are handling food and cash with no gloves, and to top it off, they are rude, they act like they own the pier or something.

5yrs ago I brought my family to Santa Monica to check out. My daughter wanted a hotdog so we bought 4 dogs from one of them vendors. 1/2hr later we all had the runs and food poisoning. When we confronted the vendor he and his wife wanted to fight us and said we gotten sick somewhere else. So I called the cops and they arrested both vendors for not having a vendor permit, they were both Illegal in the country and selling spoiled food. I think Santa Monica PD doing a great job patrolling the pier and shutting down the Illegal vendors.😎🎉🎉👍.

One thing I noticed while in Tijuana is that all of the food carts have permits issued by the city. While they have pretty loose food handling requirements you for sure arent just rolling up to the corner with tacos without cutting the city in.

Same here bro. I'm Mexican and while I love eating their food from time to time, this is a nation of laws. Permits are needed to make sure you follow health code and make sure you have permission to sell on streets properly and safely. Glad to see the police doing their job here!

While these officers are enforcing the law, they're also avoiding the law suits.

I was curious to see how difficult it was to get a vendors permit for the Santa Monica pier. Maybe that would explain why so many vendors don’t have permits but I found that application process is pretty easy as long as you follow the proper steps. The permit is free they have bilingual personnel that will help you fill your paper work out. The business license is $160 and if you wanted to sell food than you would need your food handlers card and proper equipment.
But that's how the Raza is always trying to beat the styem and don't care about the laws...they think they in Mexico

Sadly Very Difficult, The price for Santa Monica pier is that July through September is $1500. 20 per month, October November December $1153.99 per month! , January~March 749.95 per month, April~June $1153.99 per month. Security Deposit $1000 and vendor can rent a cart from management. Also, there is a waiting list, you cannot just get a permit even you want to pay for the permit :) Currently Santa Monica Pier is not accepting application. The business License $160 is not for the pier, Out of pier, across the street where the building management kick you out.
Don't forget about the LLC if you don't want people sueing you personally
These vendors accents surely tell us they're not from here and expect their lawlessness to continue here.

One of my buddy's used to be a health inspector. He always had all these cool bicycles with no front forks or front rims. From confiscating those bike carts people sell food from. He would dispose of the food cart part and he would get to keep the bikes. He said the next week they would be back again with out a permit doin the same shit.

Love how a lot of ppl think that the PD are being Bullies or singling out these Vendors. They are breaking the law. Clear and simple. You want to sell FOOD on the streets the Pier etc. Get a Permit. Get a License to do so. And follow all the Regulations of Food and sanitary safety guidelines. Simple. If they have no LEGAL I.D or papers to do so or even be here. Then it's a bigger issue at that point.

I love when the vendors start recording like somehow they’re going to use this and they’re going to win something get a permit playing simple it’s not hard but you don’t want to educate yourself on food safety and you rather feed people undercooked spoiled food because you’re not properly separating in your cross contaminating
