POLICE ARREST UNPERMITTED VENDOR & CONFISCATE FOOD IN SANTA MONICA

- Los Angeles County Public Health Deputies, in coordination with Santa Monica Code Enforcement Officers, Santa Monica Police Officers and Santa Monica Firefighters confiscate food from unpermitted food vendors at the Santa Monica Pier parking lot on Saturday, December 4, 2021. One unpermitted street vendor was arrested, food was confiscated, and citations were issued. The vendor was arrested for vandalism. The vendor allegedly pushed over another vendors food cart. A truck was towed because the driver did not have a license after being pulled over for tinted windows and height violations. (FPB stands for Fire Prevention Bureau)
The Santa Monica Pier has a worldwide identity. The City wants to preserve our decades old wooden Pier so it can be enjoyed for years to come. Because each unpermitted butane/propane cook-cart is a potential fire hazard for the Pier, the City’s Code Enforcement, the County Health Department, and the City’s Police Department periodically conduct educational and enforcement campaigns to help keep the Pier safe. This safety focus calls to eliminate all unpermitted carts, while addressing improper hot grease and trash disposal, and unsanitary food service conditions on and immediately adjacent to the Pier.
Street vending is restricted on the Santa Monica Pier. Prior to enforcement, the City of Santa Monica has been educating and warning the unpermitted street vendors for several month.
All vendors need a City of Santa Monica business license and vending permit to sell any items in the City, and vendors selling food must also obtain and display a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health permit.
As part of the City’s program, sidewalk vending is restricted in certain congested, high-traffic areas to protect public safety. This includes on and around the Pier, where all vending is prohibited except the City’s existing licensed vendor cart program, and the beach, Third Street Promenade, and Palisades Park, where stationary vending is not permitted.
In addition, a new ordinance passed on August 24, 2021, prohibits any person from using any combustible fuel (including propane, butane, any other liquid gas, kerosene, steno, charcoal or wood) on the Pier (including the Pier Bridge) or within 25 feet of the Pier, for any purpose involving the fuel’s combustion including heating, lighting, or cooking without a permit from the Fire Marshal.
Violations of the new ordinance may be handled as infractions, misdemeanors, or through issuance of administrative citations, in addition, combustible fuels used in violation of the new ordinance will be subject to impound by the Fire Marshal.

I recommend just bringing trucks and putting the whole cart on there. This will eliminate vendors within a few days because they won’t go buy new carts. The cost is too much more than just replacing the food.
Serving nasty food without permits, and blocking multiple, handicapped spots with their truck. They sure think they're are entitled to do whatever the hell they want. Was nice seeing that truck towed away.

Sadly that's the way things go with street vendors here in Mexico, they want to work without any permit, not paying rent or taxes etc... And they get mad when police do this stuff and confiscate their things, the thing here is that people fight the police and nothing ever happens....

That's not happening in America, at least not in the big major cities. I had a vendor license in NYC and never sold anything. Every year, you have to report what you sold. If it was nothing, you still had to pay $50 once a year.. With your license the state isn't going to let up on you. Once you slip up or miss a year, you are going to pay the tax, or it's going to continue to go up. You will be forced to withdraw your license or pay up. Or both.

I’m up for them selling there food and what not but doing it the right way. It’s not fair for the businesses at the pier that pay rent. It’s understandable that they are trying earn a living, but there is a right way to go about things. And some vendors don’t really respect the rules and just act as if they are in a third world country and litter, loiter, vandalize, and cause a nuisance. Even deal drugs or participate in illegal activities like fake IDs, stolen goods, all sorts of things. This is a good thing.

To be legal you need both, but only after you get a FDA inspection grading cleared to get license and peddlers permit.

This is actually the same group of young vendors who were asked to leave before on a different day. And now they have come back again. None have permits. Their carts should all be confiscated and they should be fined if not arrested. This goes to show how vendor laws of jail time need to be created. This is a health and food safety issue where people can become very ill with food poisoning and even die.
A month or so full of repetitive warnings and telling them to leave because they didn’t provide a permit…and seeing the working kids with food carts laugh in the officers faces and disrespecting them…on so many occasions…and ALL OF A SUDDEN now they ain’t laughing and shit just got serious! It’s well deserved to be honest. Hopefully the pier will be peaceful now
One guy recently was seen taking his cart into the bathroom with him. That is beyond disgusting.

The pier was peaceful during the pandemic because no one was there. It’s always been peaceful what apparently bothers you and many others seems to be the Mexicans that are trying to work without a “permit”. Bet you don’t say the same thing from all the homeless that wonder around in the pier and surrounding neighborhoods.
They need to start confiscating the carts. As well as the food, Then slap the illegal vendors with a $2500 fine

I like that black cop who seems to be handling the whole situation. I think he did a great job and is a no BS kind of guy. The city of Santa Monica should hire more officers like him instead of the lazy ones who just play the cat and mouse game on the pier with these illegal vendor punks every day.

For those of you who have never had a bad case of botulism from foul food bought on the street, you will never understand what it feels like to pray for death! I am so glad that the health department is doing what they are doing to try to protect the innocent tourist or even locals from unsanitary conditions. These people who are running these carts have no clue about 165° temperature of the meat the correct storage, and all the other things that go with it. Coming up from Mexico they have cast iron gut syndrome and nothing bothers them because they have built up a resistance. But for a gringo like me one bad hotdog is all it takes the land me in the emergency room. People also die from Bad St., Food.

I also wish for these vendors to get off the beach and go get actual jobs but let’s not disrespect those in need.
