Excellent video as always.
Also, you doing obscure side-quests is the only way I find out about some of them. I've played Morrowind a thousand times, only finishing it a handfull of times, but I've never heard of some of the people or places you mention.
Fun fact! Short blades are "best" type of melee weapon because any melee weapon thats not a spear has the same reach (1 unit). Spears have double that. (2 units). So, thanks to their reach and speed of attack, they can really add up over time. Doesnt feel as good as slamming a warhammer into a scamps head, but hey. The more you know. You can test this by hitting a wall and listening to the hit sounds. Just a small detail thats always made me laugh after I found it out in 2004
I don't think this quite works out. Due to the way Morrowind weapons work, a charged hit from a warhammer might well do more damage than a bunch of hits from a dagger unless it has very high minimum damage. Plus, spam attacks drain your fatigue.
@@lucasgreer1736 Theres a reason best was in quotes. The way I play, I use enchanted daggers to whip out absorb health in a blur. I was mainly pointing out the reach effect with the weapons
Not getting the Boots of the Apostle from Gnisis as an enchanted item with levitate on it at the start of the game was the bravest act of integrity i have seen all year ... in regards to morrowind challenge run videos. I salute.
You pronounced Hlaalu like you grew up there and return for the holidays. Seriously it was so natural for a moment I second guessed that it was fantasy gibberish and not a province in New Guinea.
Pretty close approximation to how I play the game normally The random loot in the Balmora boxes makes early Morrowind feel like a roguelite sometimes haha
ruclips.net/video/ns8LuZWiY-4/видео.html Archer slits were indeed a thing, and they were also put in the inside of fortifications, because most mid-high medieval era castles had multiple layers of defensive fortifications and walls. If one layer was breached, the defenders could retreat to the next layer, so being able to fire down on the fortifications the enemy now controlled was a very useful thing.

One of my favorite early-game boosts in Morrowind (done at level 1 already IIRC) was using stolen soulstones to enchant a large steel shield to open any door (100 pts) on touch, illustrating why the "just happened to find in dungeons or as quest rewards" part is so important. Probably much more important than not using scrolls. Making 16:01 choice not about laziness, but about integrity)

@@JustBackgroundNoise Cool, I think it's awesome how even though we all love different types of games, we are all still connected, with our love of games in general.
Pro tip: So, if you start with conjuration you start with summon ancesteral ghost. Also if you start with destruction which gives you a fire spell. Then purchase a soul trap spell. If you do all that you can creat a spell/enchantment that can fill comman souls worth $4000 each. You need to make the spell/enchantment like this. Ancestral ghost on self for 2 seconds then soultrap on target for 2 seconds then fire damage for 23 damage on target.
In regards to the interhouse conflict, this is by design of the teachings of the Good Daedra, specifically Mephala. These types of squabbles, attacks, and hostage situations, along with the Morag Tong, are what keep the dunmer people from actually having an all-out civil war. It's like stability through instability.
@58:20 Mamaea sounds kind of like Mummia, which is the powdered remains of mummies. We used to use it medicinally. In fact, demand for it used to be so high that people would tar over unidentified or condemned bodies in the desert, wait a while, and then come back to collect the dessicated goods. Kinda fitting for a 6th House dungeon name.
Heck yeah, tower sign baby! Double the max distance. Damage rings are smoked too, this is actually a run I frequently do, usually take mercantile. Can't wait to see where this video goes.
The first movie reference I got, and I don't even know anything about that movie. There's also a book, you see, an elegant entertainment from a more civilized age.
On my 2nd playthrough, I made a custom 'techno-mage' class. I had a Nord (100% Frost resistance and 50% shock resistance) with heavy armor (Dwemer armor for the robot look) and lots of enchanted rings for all my spells. Maxed out enchanting too (obviously). I loved playing it because enchanted items have zero casting speed, and low stamina doesn't affect the casting chance. Just had a ring of fire damage for Nords, and a ring of cold damage for everything else. If the cold damage got reflected, it didn't matter because I was immune anyway. Went with alchemy and some other non magic skills that the Mage's Guild uses for their requirements, just so I could advance through their questline and reduce prices at the enchanter. Had a blast throwing magic spells around like a machine gun.
13:20 not only are the "archer slits" or a balistraria, usually used for archery, there are also cases where they will jut a shortsword, dagger, or spear out the hole as the assailants are climbing ladders, since the best place to put a ladder is right above the slits in the wall. this allows for the attackers to be funneled into ladders with swords right behind them. should they choose another place to climb, it is usually either somewhere there are soldiers waiting to fight them, or it is flat out better defended. so yes, the "archer slit" is historically accurate! Edit because i couldnt leave it at just this. Looking back at the castle you were in, its pretty accurate. there are usually lockers or extra bows nearby for easy refills. the bow on the shelf is a longbow, which explains why the slit is taller and has no perpendicular lines. longbowmen would need to stand up to shoot correctly. the stairs nearby go counter clockwise UPWARD because right handed fighters would have the advantage. (the attackers coming down would be trying to slice through the pillar. the attackers going up essentially have a bigger area to swing) this particular design is used when you want to fight UP when defending. for this to work correct, you usually need to be really heavily defended in the front in order to keep people coming in from the top longer.
I know why you didn't use the cast when strikes items, but I really do love those ones. One of my favorite enchants to put on a weapon is a simple Absorb Fatigue 9 points enchantment. It's a 1 cost enchantment, so you can put it on any weapon, and it also only burns one charge per swing. It basically ensures that my fatigue is always full and whatever I'm fighting is low on fatigue, and you don't even need expensive soul gems or specific high enchant capacity weapons to make it effective.
You mentioned high rolling damage on those X-Y damage for Z seconds enchantments, so I want to point out that the magnitude is rerolled every frame. At any sort of reasonable frame rate you might as well assume it deals average damage. You can high roll on effects that apply over zero seconds, though. The UI just isn't very nice about distinguishing those from 1s effects... (And you can high roll on effects that only apply once, but you knew that since you were stacking Fortify Strength!)
I don't know what it is but it's so relaxing to simply listen to the videos while gaming or trying to sleep, watching them is of course also awesome :3
There is a key to Baladas' door. When you enter Arvs, go right until you are in a room with bed. On an endtable is paper and the key named summoning room key, I think, is on the paper.
Some of the guilds in morrowind skip over stat requirements for the final rank usually awarding it as the reward for the quest, such as the imperial legion and mages guild who will only conceede thier position to you via duel to the death, telvanni also does this.
Man the Enchanting system is so much fun in this game I wish it stuck around for future games, could have been an easy replacement for custom spells than the abandonment of the mechanic in skyrim for being "too spreadsheety" and "having too much of a focus on what the numbers do" as Bethesda's excuse for then straight up lying about the damage spells do to the point where I'm pretty certain that the wall spells actually deal 20 less damage than they say they do when you see their actual damage number in the editor
34:21 I think Vaermina made the cure to vampirism specifically to curb Molag Bal’s influence over mortals. That sounds like something daedric lords would do to each other.
31:22 You know I saw it pointed out recentyl that in Morrowind, Molag Bal is not said to be the creator of vampirism. He just knows a cure. It could be any daedric prince that made it. Namira would have made a lot of sense.
Oh hey, I remember playing on Steam for the first time and being confused about the yellow bar for a moment. :D Also, hah! Love the burn on Zurin. (16:59)
Something like this was my most fun run of morrowind. I played an orc mage that couldn't use magic so I had to enchant items to act as spells. Very challenging early game and forces you to do many different quests hunting down the best enchanted items. Telvanni quests give some really juicy ones.
I appreciate that you tend to keep the game volume low compared to the narration. It makes putting on reruns of these when i need to use your channel for what its called much nicer.
This is my current playthrough but I don't use any Enchant NPCs but do allow found scrolls. Finding all the neat ways to make cheap enchants and finding the first Soul Trap Scroll was a godsend
For what its worth if it ever comes up in another run, Umbra (the sword) which comes from Umbra(the guy) is actually a target cast effect instead of on strike soul trap that doesn't require vampirism sidequesting.

Thank you SO MUCH for doing more than just beating the base game. Speedrunning tech has made that sooooo trivial.
Also, you doing obscure side-quests is the only way I find out about some of them. I've played Morrowind a thousand times, only finishing it a handfull of times, but I've never heard of some of the people or places you mention.
I had previously considered a "Wands only" run where the only spells you can cast were from items. This takes it a step further.
@@poorlydisguisedeldritchabo221 yeah the fact that they have the same reach as everything except spears is pretty funny
You've made my shitty trip far better with these two videos, thank you JBN
ah where u goin dude, cross-country or cross-fade?
@kinkinkijkin we can only hope he made it to his final destination, be it the inner workings of his mind or the other side of the US
So what were you on? Please, give us a trip report!
@@centralintelligenceagency9003 nice try fed boy
Oh nah I was driving to California and back from Maryland, it was a hell of a drive lol
Pretty close approximation to how I play the game normally
The random loot in the Balmora boxes makes early Morrowind feel like a roguelite sometimes haha
ruclips.net/video/ns8LuZWiY-4/видео.html
Archer slits were indeed a thing, and they were also put in the inside of fortifications, because most mid-high medieval era castles had multiple layers of defensive fortifications and walls. If one layer was breached, the defenders could retreat to the next layer, so being able to fire down on the fortifications the enemy now controlled was a very useful thing.
And I just finished eating. Guess I have to eat another meal now so I can watch everyone's favourite Morrowind youtuber who has posted a video within the last 30 minutes!
It's a small thing, but the etymology lesson of Bal and the lore stuff is absolutely A+ commentary and fantastic.
I love this channel. It's a perfect venn diagram of things I enjoy. Odd play throughs, Marrowind, relaxing but humorous narration. It's perfect, thank you so much for uploading these and sharing with us.
6:28 - There is a key to the door to Baladas. It's called "Summoning Room Key" and it's on a piece of paper on a nightstand in one of the bedrooms. I have played this game too many times.
Just wanted to say man that, you've helped me through life lately. My cousin passed and he was a big Morrowind player (not to mention you look fairly like him lol) and I've been watching your videos alot and I love the way you do them, and the challenges you do. Keep it up bro!
Keep your head high, bro! You should boot up Morrowind in honor and memory of your cousin
@davisjacobs5748 I will, thank you!
You will single handedly revive Morrowind and I can't wait for it to blow up
It never died
@@Graknorke It never truly died. But it was squandered to the point of near death
I continue to demand a 'floor is lava' challenge where you delete the exterior world geometry and can only abuse acrobatics fortification to jump atop static objects to get around.
I am reasonably sure it's impossible in Morrowind.
@@AliceLoverdrive You can leap across the entire island in one jump. It's not impossible; it's Morrowind.
@@Marcara081
They probably meant deleting the world geometry.
@@Skillfullfilms89 I can do that right now.
@@Marcara081 Hmm...
Hypothetically, if someone were to do this, how would one go about it?
One of my favorite early-game boosts in Morrowind (done at level 1 already IIRC) was using stolen soulstones to enchant a large steel shield to open any door (100 pts) on touch, illustrating why the "just happened to find in dungeons or as quest rewards" part is so important. Probably much more important than not using scrolls. Making 16:01 choice not about laziness, but about integrity)
I absolutely love your morrowind videos, always was my favorite elderscrolls and I could watch your challenge runs of it forever and ever. Thank you lol
I just recently discovered this channel and the fact you upload regularly is fantastic.
Keep it up mate these videos are great

Merchants pull from levelled lists for their stock. As you level up, they (generally) get better stuff to put in their wares. That said, the lower level stuff never goes away so you don't always see the higher level stuff. This happens when they restock, I believe every 72 hours.
I love your content. It scratches a major itch. Your editing and ads are also very great to see
Wow you got a sponsorship! Really becoming a RUclips Big Boy. I would have never guessed you had alopecia, I thought you had just discovered a look that was great for you. Obviously it sucks to have your choice taken away, but it is nice that it worked out.
Oh hell yeah another Morrowind vid! Aint gonna lie that is top tier content. Btw that alopecia makes it so easy for you to rock that futuristic Harkonnen look that is quite badass.
I love JBN. I absolutely adore this bald man.
I'm working on Final Fantasy X-2 100% currently and I've listened to all of your videos in the background while i'm working on it, (I'm at like, 15% currently)
FFX-2 100% is dumb and I hate it. (if you didn't interact with a character in the prologue you miss 0.2% and you cant get 100% on that save file, and you gotta do some things in a specific order, if you don't you don't get the percentage points on your save file.
I absolutely love FFX-2 don't get me wrong but I feel like I need a guide to enjoy it since I'm a perfectionist when it comes to JRPGS.
Sorry I ranted, JBN have you played Final Fantasy X, and if you have, what are you thoughts on it?
Or just tell me what's your favorite Final Fantasy. (I bet it's IX, you seem like a guy who would love FFIX).
I've never played any of them, except a bit of XIV, but I never made it past level 40ish. Turn-based RPGs just never really appealed to me, except Pokémon.
I love how we can tell just how positively *delighted* you were after killing the heart.
Your musing on the nature of vampires in lore has me DYING to see things like Namira's vampires, or Sheogorath's vampires...
Oh my god I got blitzed and then noticed there was a new Just Background Noise video hell yes
I have been going thru a lot. Your videos are calm, peaceful, and innocent. They help my spirit be at ease and my mind calm. Thank you.
Just finished re-listening to most of your morrowind videos while working wanting more to listen to, my wishes have been answered !
I thought books were from morrowind

A man scaped ad from the guy with Alopecia is perfection
I'm loving these man. Always going back to watch them again, or simply have them as just background noise.
A video right as I am sitting down to eat!? This is perfect!
Dude's channel just exploded into the atmosphere, congratulations jbn I'm glad so many people can enjoy the channel.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels on RUclips and i haven't even played Morrowind! Keep up the awesome work man!
Found this channel while at work and have never been more interested to replay morrowind now.
That ad had me dead! 😂 I love your content and presentation style. Great work!

"Ground wizards"sent me.
Definitely gonna steal that.

Is there a vod channel for the TR streams? I can’t make them love but would love to see your journey through it all! I freakin love your content :)
There is! www.youtube.com/@justbackgroundvods295
It's also linked on my channel.
The bat belt that every player assembles eventually in this game is always great. Morrowinds best feature most inexcusable removal in the later games.
I liked how you floated down to the guard to begin the run. Cool detail, love the video.
Easily the best ad read I've seen in a video. Also love your content in general, keep up the awesome work!
Good ad spot bro, didn't know you had alopecia and loved how you incorporated it into the read.
Charlie Villanueva would be proud
I love the tangents you go on in videos please dont cut them out !!
Also, hah! Love the burn on Zurin. (16:59)
Another great video! And you're getting more confident too, i wish you the best for the futurre and already can't wait for the next one!
1:10:16 a very normal reaction to waking up to four werewolves surrounding you (they look friendly)
"I can't see, but I'm fast!" Dude that sent me, lmao
For what its worth if it ever comes up in another run, Umbra (the sword) which comes from Umbra(the guy) is actually a target cast effect instead of on strike soul trap that doesn't require vampirism sidequesting.
God i have commented this before, you should be the fkin default character model for all games. you are so smooth and ive never seen someone with such symmetrical features. Your head is perfectly shaped. All your facial features are perfectly placed with no odd spacing. You look like Normal Spongebob. Someone modeled you in Blender. Not to mention the idyllic voice that would match the idyllic default character model.
I'm not sure if alopecia is a sensitive subject for you, if it is Im sorry and I dont want to be rude.
Just got back from my graduation, and I was greeted with this gift. Always happy to see your videos!
I really liked the sponsor spot, was actually interesting to hear they had products for you.
Babe wake up, new JBN video just dropped
Love your ad reads... and I like this idea too
On this episode of Morrowind: Scroll'n't run
Note about the cure blight scroll - you could have done this legitimately with the Helm of Tohan from the official plugins. It has exactly 150 enchant capacity. Since the full expansions are on the table, the official plugins should be as well.
