I really had to roll my eyes at the opening when Enrico split up the team and sent a teenage girl with no combat experience to hunt down a marine veteran who they think is a mass murderer that just killed to MP's. It makes it very hard to suspend my disbelief and accept that STARS are actually elite professionals, when they show all the Special Tactics of a group of councillors at Crystal Lake.

    • @paulman34340

Especially since Rebecca is THE MOTHERFUCKING MEDIC! Plus they really screwed Bravo team here as they focused so much on Billy (who I feel should have gotten his own game and NOT been shoehorned into this one) and the game should have been Rebecca working with different STARS Bravo members (Like Forrest and Enrico, not Kenneth as he's too much the J. Frost of the series alongside said man in being killed off to horrify you with your first encounter of the killer! AKA the iconic First Zombie encounter) with you losing control of the extras as the others meet their canon fates and the final battle separates Rebecca from the rest (That happy like ending for RE0 was silly because you knew Rebecca was just jumping into one oven into another! Should have run off with Billy...unless he got killed by all the "other BOW" roaming the area that Alpha team unfortunately ran into the night of that day Rebecca went into the mansion! That would explain why we never heard from him again....because if we did then Rebecca SHOULD have run off with him seeing how she had to get LUCKY Chris saved her ass and Wesker fucked up his shot in shooting to kill her!) I mean in this way we get to see HOW Enrico started to come to the conclusion their was a traitor in STARS and how they got set up! (I get his hostility to Chris and calmness with Jill was because he dismissed Jill as the traitor while Chris if I remember was too new to Alpha team that he hadn't vetted Chris as a suspect by the time they ran into each other in Chris Scenario! But I would love to SEE this setup instead of having to think it up myself from what I know!)
Wesker splitting everyone up in RE1 DID Make some sense (though Jill and/or Chris should have at least PROTESTED this order abit though to be fair they were split up in checking the nearby DININING ROOM area and didn't expect Wesker to run off like he did! Barry acting as he did made sense and he did defy Wesker's orders from time to time such as saving Jill from the Shotgun room provided you go for it RIGHT THEN AND THERE during a Jill run and not wait till he's "legitimately unavailable" to go for it WITHOUT the Fake to put in it's place!) Chris is kind of a dope for not suspecting Wesker till the twist. While Jill was the quickest to suspect (though out of fairness if I remember Wesker and Chris had the better work relationship, while Jill and Wesker were already hostile outside of orders, so once she figured Barry out as a traitor and Enrico's death by gun shot and later ironing Barry out as the one who shot him, it was easy for her to figure Wesker was the most sus, and the picture of him and the other scientists outright CONFIRMED it for her! Hence her being completely hostile to Wesker when you ran into him, while Chris was still in abit of disbelief till Wesker made it alot more clear...especially shooting Rebecca so coldly as he did!).

Totally agree. Also, what police department is hiring 18 year olds? Let’s alone to a SWAT or special weapons group? Most places REQUIRE a 4 year degree or 4 years of military and then you’ll still be training for 6 months to a year. You’d be lucky to be 25 walking into the front line role

@@kyledodson2992 If I remember, STARS was meant to be "Anti-Terrorists" and if I remember many have done Military before their assignment to the squad (Chris is former Air Force, Don't know about Jill since she previously had Delta Training till that was retcon because the time period in her background made that impossible, but I still think their is some military with her), and their ages fit enough that you can't really question how any of them made the cut (Kevin from Outbreaks backstory also showed that even regular officers can get assigned if they make the cut! Shows Wesker was willing to look for "Guinea Pigs" even among the RPD if they "fit his profiling").
This is why she's the odd-woman out! Even if a Genius in chemistry and medical, that really wouldn't change the fact that it was stated each of the members, yes even Brad (say what you will, but he DID stay around the area looking for the team to the point he was almost out of gas by the point you make your escape at the end of RE1, so he wasn't a complete cowardly ass) and speaking of years, I don't think genius no matter how young would be allowed to "skip through" the years she would have had to gone through to be accepted in Medical either! Rebecca is a complete plot hole that could still be fixed if they aged her up abit near Jill age so we'd stop wondering alot of these's questions (and as this review pointed out, she was WAY to chill and calm running into HER FIRST ZOMBIE! Much different then the older Jill who froze up against her first Cerberus encounter needing to get saved less she suffer Frost's fate, Chris dropped his fucking gun, and you'd think he'd have it more secured even if he was running away in panic...speaking of him, I have to wonder why an Air Force man would be on the Team, likely to be Brad backup if another pilot was needed, But does he have Helicopter training?)

You have that moment in the original where he tries to tell Chris or Jill about a conspiracy before getting shot, presumably by Wesker. Not sure that would have fit with the series attitude though. Part of the reason they called the games "survival horror" is that there's a large emphasis on the, well, survival. They want the game to be challenging and tense and dark, but ultimately be something you can pull through and overcome. So playing as a character we know is fated to die would have gone against that philosophy.

Before the revamp with re4, I think outbreak is the only game of the olden days that makes sense not to have global inventory boxes. It makes you plan out and decide what’s most important to you and your group’s limited inventory/time for a short self contained scenario. God I wish we had a reboot on modern hardware…
But yea, realizing the back tracking would be insane made me put the game down immediately.

Outbreak was absolutely great because each player played a role, such as holding keys or items, and most could only have one gun, I played that game so much online I skipped the guns, gave guns and ammo to other players, dodged every enemy and collected molotov cocktails for fun and used pipes and sticks as my weapons of choice.
I hope they rerelease it with online functionality, and hopefully it'll sell well enough for Capcom to make Outbreak 3.

Truth be told. I actually enjoyed RE0. Even then I kinda appreciated the choices that were made in regards to item dropping/trading and removing the item box, as well as switching between characters on the fly. For me it was an interesting concept and I liked the challenge. I thought the idea of incorporating more infected animals was great.. however I think the premise of suspension of disbelief is an issue in this game. For example, just the simple idea of where enemies are placed for one (the scorpion boss... in a train). All and all I had a good time with RE0, however personally my biggest gripe with this game is the main villain. In my opinion, one of the worst in the series, and a character that could've been completely removed from this game entirely and it probably wouldve made for a better experience; Emphasizing Rebecca's journey and behind the scenes moments between Wesker and Birkin, with the prototype Tyrant being the end boss would've been enough in my opinion. Retconning story elements to add a cheesy villian was unnecessary.

RE0 didn't retconned anything but expanded on the events of RE timeline due to RE1 and 2 didn't explain who release the T-Virus in the spencer mansion at all. I love the fact that one of James Marcus experiments took the physical form of young James Marcus and have the memories of Marcus and personally believe its James Marcus himself and spread the T-Virus on the train and in the forest and in Umbrella training facility and the Spencer Mansion.

Honestly I think it's one of the best Resident Evil games. Do I enjoy lots of inventory shuffling? Well, actually yes I do. Probably the most strategic of all RE games when it comes to inventory / resource management. I do however, completely understand how others would find it irritating. Story is total bullshit though, with the anime villain etc. I never really cared about what was going on really, in comparison to the other games in the "classic" era.
Edit: Just remembered my favourite way to play Remake is the "Real Survival" mode, in which the item boxes are not linked, so perhaps there is something in that side of things I find satisfying.

I remember reading an article with the devs about why they scrapped item boxes. It had something to do with making the game super easy regarding teleporting items across vast areas of the game. I get that’s what item boxes do, but it was more like let’s say you leave Rebecca in a save room, Billy is on the other side of the game, he needs an item he has to back track for, Rebecca is closer to the item, she can leave the safety of her room, grab the nearby item, put it in her chest, then Billy has instant access to it via the save room/item box that’s closer to him. Being able to swap between two characters AND having universal item boxes in save rooms basically negated the need for backtracking (most of the time). Billy needs a healing item? Rebecca can grab some nearby herbs, mix them, & send them to him. Once you switch to the other character, you never have to worry about your partner randomly being attacked because they’re in a save room. It makes sense why they did it, it just made backtracking 100 times more tedious.

I played Resident Evil Zero back in 2002 on Nintendo Gamecube and actually liked it. It's nice to know how it all began, to see what Rebecca had to deal with.
But the inconsistency between RE0 and RE1 Rebecca really is pretty strange.
It's similar to Daniel Larusso from Karate Kid: After he became champion in the first movie, he seems to have forgotten everything about Karate when the second movie starts and this pattern repeats itself at the beginning of the second and the third movie.
RE0 had some interesting ideas like:
changing the character with the push of a button.
combine items without putting them in your inventory: you have a red herb in your inventory, but no space for the green one? Combine them to mixed herbs and now can carry another item.
Billy helping Rebecca to reach spaces she can't reach by herself is a nice idea, as well as
Rebecca using her skills in chemistry to create chemicals which are needed to get items which in turn are needed to solve riddles or getting items to solve them.
I wished Capcom would've added more cutscenes were you can see what the rest of Bravo Team is doing after Rebecca meets Enrico, or distributed them throughout the game. It would've made the entire game more exciting and would've created even more excitement by showing the fates of every Bravo Team member at the end while Rebecca makes her way to the mansion.
That would be one hell of a Cliffhanger for everyone who only played RE0 and would've answered the question of how every member found his end.

Billy gets a redemption arc and illustrates the bond of friendship by saving her and then dying/walking off into the sunset and Rebecca is mentally back where she started at the beginning of RE0.

I just came up with something that probably would've made RE 0 more likeable.
First and foremost, item boxes. But secondly really, the game switching the characters for you as you progress through the story.
For example, let's say you're in the train cart, Rebecca and Billy stumble upon a room with a locked up safe that has an important key item. The two characters talks about their course of action. One of them would stay behind and try to figure out how to work the safe while the other explores the area and look for anything that would help open the safe.
This will be the decision for the player to either have Billy explore the area, or Rebecca.
This will happen often throughout the game, giving the player the option to control the character you feel like playing for the time being.
You won't be able to change your characters freely any more, only when you get to a certain point of the game.
And every time a player switches a character to explore the same area, new enemies will spawn, even when the last character you played as cleared the entire area.
This idea would have the same replay ability of choosing different scenarios like in other RE games.

7:22 Both character's actually seem to be programmed for "attack" state differently, with Rebecca only firing when you fire as Billy, or when you're under direct attack in a grab. Billy as AI, from every experience I've had, will waste dump ammo into enemies.
Also when's the follow-up vid? "Leech Hunter | The Gamemode That I Forgot"

If that’s the case, then it’s inconsistent cause I’ve also had her do the opposite.

@@CriticalNobody It's been incredibly consistent from all my time with the game, but entirely possible that's just coincidence since I play the same way every time, knowing the game near inside-out. Regardless of any specifics, Rebecca always seems WAY more Passive than Billy in attack state.

I very much enjoyed RE:0 and have replayed it many times. The worst part is the story, the best part is the atmosphere and locations. The most fun you can have with this game is after you beat Leech Hunter 100%. Going back into the mansion and destroying all the creatures and zombies with infinite weapons is just awesome.

I love RE0, it has great athmosphere and super realistic pre-rendered backgrounds. The inventory system is super complicated but more realistic than magically inter connected boxes. Just think of it as a non cannon fan fiction and you can have a lot of fun with it.

I only ever played the first 30 minutes of this one. Couldn't really get into it at the time, and I've seen enough of it since to think I wouldn't really like it now. The storyline is too inconsequential, convoluted, and derivative of RE1, with Rebecca very blatantly not acting like the same character between both games. The item system is too inconvenient and clunky, thanks to the removal of 4D storage containers, the fact Rebecca and Billy only have 6 item spaces apiece, and the fact some items now all of a sudden take up multiple item spaces. Controlling two characters at the same time creates the same problem RE5 has; it's far less tense and scary as a game when you don't feel alone. RE4 isn't very scary, but the few times it is, like when the Regenerators show up, would be ruined if Leon was yapping with a comrade.
It's a shame, because RE0 was the last mainline fixed camera/tank control game in the franchise, which while dated and an acquired taste as a game style still has its appeal even in 2022. But it was clear the series needed to change, and we kinda needed something like RE4. There's like 5 or 6 memorable RE games in the classic style, and that's plenty when you really think about it.

Tormented Souls proved that fixed camera Survival Horror can still work very well.

Speaking of the dramatic change in gameplay, atmosphere, etc that began with RE4: most people nowadays don't talk about how, back when RE0 first released, gamers were actually getting tired of old school RE games. With RE3, Code Veronica, REMake, and then finally RE 0, gamers felt that RE games were beginning to feel a little stale. Capcom tried to change things up a bit with RE 0 (removal of storage chests, switching between two characters on the fly, etc), but the game still didn't impress gamers. Back in 2002 when RE0 first released, people's attitude towards it was very "Meh".
And that is when Capcom realized they needed to do something *VERY* different and drastic if they wanted to keep the Resident Evil series relevant and fresh - so they made RE 4 the way that it is.
Love it or hate it - fans certainly cannot say that RE 4 "ruined" the franchise. Capcom themselves will tell you that it actually SAVED the franchise. Like I was saying, people nowadays forget that the classic-style RE games were getting stale with gamers in the early 2000s. Capcom didn't make RE 4 the way that it is just for the hell of it. They actually made 4 an action game due to FAN dissatisfaction and growing bored with RE games. Fans wanted something fresh and different, so Capcom gave them RE 4. And the fans loved it.
But of course, by RE 6, fans had grown bored of this action-style of RE games and wanted a return to the classic survival-horror style. It would feel 'fresh' and interesting again, since we've grown so bored with the action-style RE games.
      Anyways, sorry for rambling.

Had it been me, the moment the decision was made to switch to GameCube I would have said to Capcom "Hey, so let's turn this into a bonus disc for Resident Evil."
Then I would have cut it way down, made it feel more like a short, but ultra hard prequel story. Ammo would be limited, and you'd mostly be dealing with zombies, dogs, etc. And it wouldn't be Billy Coen, it would be Kenneth from Bravo team. Instead of being sent here, Kenneth and Rebecca get cut off from the rest of Bravo team in the forest when they're attacked by the Cerberus blood pack. The rest of the team heads for the mansion while Rebecca/Kenneth get stuck on the train during a storm. Rebecca is able to keep spotty radio contact with the rest of the team early on, but then loses contact entirely. The train is used expressed by Umbrella staff to get ferried to and from various labs and facilities. After exploring/unlocking the train, a countdown to destruction is triggered. Kenneth and Rebecca are seperated in the explosion with Kenneth making a blind run for the mansion. The storm stops, almost to mock you as it is still too dangerous in the forest. You'd enter the second new area, similar to the guardhouse, the dormitory. This is where low-level Umbrella staff would be processed, trained, and lay up until assigned to other places. Big enough to be a secondary area, but also pushing you towards the end of the game. There would be mutant centipedes here, and in the basement a large centipede boss. After defeating it and securing the final puzzle piece you unlock a path heading towards the mansion. End. Maybe a two hour experience. After beating it you'd unlock a special file on Umbrella, detailing its founding, etc... As well as a robust "mercenaries" "battle game" type of a scenario where you can play any STARS members and run through the train, mansion, guardhouse, lab, or dorm as various linear combat and time trials.
Why? Resident Evil 0 always felt like it was an inflated bonus mission, and its the inflation that hurts it. The strongest section of the game is the train section. That's the area with the most clear inspiration at play. After that it almost seems like they didn't know what to do. Also showing Wesker/Birkin watching events unfold, hey, thanks for spoiling REmake for someone who may not have played it yet. That's another issue with prequels. They always run the risk of spoiling what comes next.

If capcom ever decides to make a remake of RE0 the could fix the inventary problem by either returning item boxes or making or making items fit in one slot (like that godamned hookshoot) and giving you pouches to increase the space like RE2 remake

You know it happened the same to me. I never had the chance to have a gamecube, so I could never play RE1 remake or zero. When Capcom announced the remasters for PC I was really excited. I played and I finished RE1 with both characters. But I could never finish RE0. I always drop it and I don't know why. It just not my cup of tea I guess

I agree. Maybe the N64 original that was cancelled would've fit better as that was trying to the in to RE1 1996.
Fun fact, the Bravo Team member Rebecca runs into on the Umbrella train? He was missing one of his hands due to the 1996's opening live action cutscene.
I don't think the weird opera singing Leach guy was present in the N64 version either.

Yeah I'm a year later to the comment party, but I'm one of those that like 0 a lot. If they ever remade 0, and in my head the best way to do it is as one single game encompassing both 0 and 1 in a Re: The Arklay Mountains incident or something, I think "fixing" Rebecca's character isn't as hard as it seems. You can have her going into the mansion exhausted and wounded, bleeding from the fights, making it into the infirmary safe room Chris finds her in, patching herself up and crashing there, falling asleep. Then once Chris finds her, it makes sense if she is not at 100% and still wounded, plus it was Billy doing the heavy lifting the night before anyway. As far as the Birkin lab, finding its location should be simply omitted.
