  • We name the best affordable front-drive hot hatch available in Australia today 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
Aussies might be deserting traditional passenger cars in favour of SUVs and utes even more quickly than they’re adopting EVs, but the humble hot hatch continues to buck that trend.
Yes, there’s plenty of life left in the traditional hot hatch, which remains the epitome of the enthusiast’s do-it-all car by combining pace, agility, fun, practicality and affordability in equal measure.
Arguably, in fact, there’s never been more choice when it comes to accessible hot hatches, as evidenced by the Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST, the Hyundai i20 N and i30 N, and the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Golf GTI.
So we assembled the six best light and small hot hatches available in Australia today, and compared them for safety, technology, comfort and convenience, ownership costs and, of course, driving performance - both on the road and racetrack - to name just one winner.

Your chart at 1:49 shows how much you know about the cars you review. Both Golf and Polo have a 2 year/30tkm service intervall (oil change might be due sooner) and VW doesn't offer a "5 year/unlimited km warranty". I don't know about the other brands, but I suspect that those infos are wrong aswell.

Curious how you came up with some of the scores, looking at the two fords they have the least amount of safety kit, the Fiesta the least by a long way, but the ratings don't seem to reflect this, the Focus especially getting the second highest yet having the second lowest amount of 'stuff' in the tables?

Nice review. These cars vary substantially in cost though - which is a huge factor. I purchased a 2022 Polo GTI for 48k, fully optioned - I could have gone for a Golf GTI, but with the options I wanted, it comes to 68k. I didn't think a Golf was worth paying an extra $20,000. It's a shame BMW couldn't provide a 128ti for testing. You've a keen eye for locations, but as for your accusations of disregarding public safety, these are road cars that will be primarily be driven on road, so it makes sense to test and film them on road and, as such, all road regulations were of course adhered to. But since you mention it, we also hired Winton for a day to complete performance testing and limit driving for another video that will be uploaded soon. Thanks for watching.
