The new Hyundai i20 N has already proven itself as an accomplished hot hatch in isolation, but we wanted to put it up against its sibling - the i30 N - to really test its mettle. The i30 N has a sizeable 77bhp advantage over the newcomer, as well as a new dual-clutch gearbox, but it also carries a hefty 315kg weight penalty. Will that be the i30 Ns undoing around the technical Llandow Circuit? Steve Sutcliffe set a lap time in both to find out.

Forget about the 0.2 sec, his smile while driving both tell us all we need :-)
That's what Hyundai strives for... "(Heart)beats per minute" rather than speed.
@@dannnsss8034 They're right to do so. Beating your competition in the 0-60 times sacrificing fun for 0.2secs in a car that isn't even close to sub 5 is a waste of time (looking at VW dsg).
At the end of the day hot hatches are for hooning and thrashing them around in the most fun way possible. I believe they have achieved that.
Fancy gizmos only make sense on proper sports cars imo, stuff like that just takes away the raw and visceral fun of driving a tiny lightweight car.
@@Yujiro945 veloster is in the us market,i 30 n for europe. You cant get the other one in your Region. But kind off the same car
Got my i20N a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Remember the i20N is a manual vs the i30N's auto box and the times are still almost identical. Impressive stuff.
He did say the manual i30N was abit faster
@@fale892 how can the manual be faster?

More Steve please, that guy can drive and I trust his opinions. That little rocket i20N was so close to the dct I30N wow!
@@RyanGorton which one, the i20 or 30?
@@RyanGorton I'm doing exactly the same. Just ordered mine. October delivery...
Both cars are great! the i20n is more "boy racer" - light weight, fun manual, tough suspension. It's a little more rough around the edges on the inside, but both are very similar. I still prefer the i30n for a daily because of the adjustable suspension and dct. Most people are gonna spend more time on the road then the race track :P
The i20 N looks a fantastic little car. Eager to try one out after seeing this.
I just bought one after watching this video :)
I'd prefer the i20N too. It's tech is newer and the interior lighting is amazing at night.
Please do a track battle between i20n and fiesta st !!!
Booth got the same laptime. Would be interesting
Well, I'll give you a quick rundown, the I20n will be the faster car after the first lap.

As always, some great video and comments, thanks Steve!
Lovely guy,one of the best,i would definitely like to see also short reviews but not forget about the track battles😀
It's so refreshing to see a driver of Steve's talent drive more mundane cars (albeit, fun ones) :)
Steve’s one who’s opinion you can trust. Always good to see your reviews mate.
Wife just bought the i20N and I couldn’t be more proud of her 👍🏻
I truly can say, that the i20n is really a great car. Had the Chance to drive it lately and I got the smile too from the first moment. Great job here Hyundai. 😊👍🏼
another great video Steve. Thank you man.
Steve's on I drop everything! Cheers
Your driving skill and review just awesome
Bravo! What a compelling case the i20N makes! 🔥😎
I have an i20n on order and will fit Racechip, Catback exhaust , downpipe, Air intake and oil catch can as soon as possible.
Love you work Steve! Hope to see more of your reviews
Love them both but to me a manual is driving. Automatic is not driving. It maybe quicker but not as fun, manual gearbox makes you feel more in control and you are the driver not just a pedal pushing you.
Manual makes any car more fun to drive, would rather a manual Yaris > auto I30 N.
I did test drive it yesterday in Switzerland, while awaiting mine in September ... Yes it gives you a smile ... Chassis Suspension Gearbox Steering wheel reminds me the Impreza STi ... Power torque wise ... 240bhp and 350Nm would be far better
Hopefully a nice remap will achieve those numbers
I'm sure you can get that with a remap?
@@sparkplug964 it won't come with a remap, will have to wait for remap companies to start making them. Which I'm sure they will it seems like it will be a popular car.

Isn't it the same engines on a bunch of other hyundai/Kia cars that uses a 1.6t engine? It won't take long for a tune.
@@2010ngojo Yes and no. This has the new Smartstream 1.6T which basically only shares hp/tq and displacement with the old G4FJ 1.6T. This would also be a whole new ECU setup so would require starting fresh.
Very nice video, thank you.
Cracking driver too.
i20N with a remap to 250bhp would worry a few much more expensive cars !
250bhp In that little thing you'd be flying
Don't do that, just get some slicks and you go faster than having some more horses, and a chip tuning that aggressive will kill the car
Where have you been Steve, I’ve missed your videos. Miss you writing for Autocar too.
Great video thanks can you do a i20 n vs fiesta st3 new facelift please
I20N. I've ordered one. And yes. At the beginning, just from seeing it in front of a dealership, I didn't took it seriously. Then there were all the videos blowing up. And I decided to test drive it, find out, what the hype is all about. And then I bought. Because it was exactly what I needed beside my station wagon and it suprised me. Bang for the buck.
I did that thing pound dogs do on rescue day when I rode my bike to the dealers and it was sat there in black and blue with the bose almost zinced my shorts, spent two hours playing with it salesmen having fun with me both of us like kids, I ordered the peal dragon red black roofed bose stereo i20n I HOPFULLY get it July its amazing utterly amazing
I'm thinking about building a car for racing on track and maybe rally later. Was thinking i30N but I think the i20N may be better with some serious mods done to the engine and suspension. I too have learned no matter how much power you have, weight makes all the difference.
If you buld a track car I'd advise you to buy used as it's a Pity to ruin the 5year track warranty it comes with ,also I think that the suspension is stiff and low enough for. The car any more and you'll be bouncing around
Steve Sutcliff I found you! My favorite car presenter.
Love the i20N. A lot of money but also a lot of car..
When he said the "Ratio" is closer. I understood he is well-educated. Comparing things based on ratios is what the real world needs.
I would easily take the I20n over the i30n I love a smaller more Nimble car any day of the week plus it has a proper manual transmission.
So does the i30n
What do you think i20N vs Yaris GR handling-wise? Of course Yaris GR has more power but Im interested in handling and grip
The difference of performance also depend from the kind of the track..this is a very short and slow track ,if you drive in Monza there is much difference..or if you drive in another regular track ....with DCT should be little bit faster than the manual because there are 8 gears than 6 and there is no lag when you change up ,the engine is always running....but sincerely I prefer manual !!!
"Add lightness". Chapman, Colin.
How does the i10 N compare? Cant decide on the i10 N or i20 N. Any recommendations ?
I wonder if I30N wouldn't be faster in the custom mode with medium suspension setting - it looks to bounce a lot on the track with the stiffest mode.
Reminds me of my mk1 Swift GTI in the 80s. That had half the power of the i20n, but was half the weight!
I almost bought a i30n last year, but kept my 208 Gti by peugeot sport instead.
Surprisingly i have more room being 6'3" in that car compared to the i30n i tested.
And seeing this video im glad i did.
Still awesome cars hyundai is putting on sale these days.
Personally do prefer the i20n between the 2.
If you only want a track car, sure. i30n looks so much doper as a daily imo
Totally agree
You also seemed to be bouncing around less in the i20, which I can imagine makes it feel a bit less tiring.
The i30N has customizable suspension settings though, so he could've softened it up if he wanted to. You have 3 different levels, and by default N mode is in the stiffest.
I also noticed this. And commented on it without reading your status. Seriously bumpy in N mode on i30
Hp is easy, and coz its 4cyl i believe it will make a better candidate for decent power mods than 3cyls
Interesting that the i20 did the same lap time as a 5 door Fiesta St tested by Steve 2 years ago. Not sure if the ST had the LSD option either. Fiesta is more road biased than the i20. The i30 is just to heavy for that track.
FiST on narrower 205 width tyre too.
While this is a great video, any chance of a real world on the road test of the i20N please? Track days are great and all that but I'd be more interested in ride quality for road use. I tested a Fiesta ST and, apart from the seats being too small, I found the ride too bouncy for daily use. Preferred the i30N's active dampers in comfort mode.
It's known to be firm but useable as a daily.fairly predictable for road use otherwise they wouldn't have made it this way
Bro, you are comparing a 22k quid Fiesta ST with a 30K quid Hyundai I30N. For 3-4k quid you can buy the sickest coilover kit for that Fiesta and set the dampers how you want them, mechanically, but hey they are bullet-proof to outlast any electric system!
@@tavirosu25 I was just commenting on my test drive experiences. Didn't buy either in the end, went for a GRY 😄
@@LoftyVisions nice car! I ended up with a Clio RS Trophy 220hp. It's just sad Renault axed any new vesions of it and the whole Renault Sport department 😢😭
Please could you do a track battle between the GTI and the 128ti?
With a remap man performance bargain I love it , but I will have to stick to my polo GTI 1.8 tsi until I can afford one
The original I30N manual transmission did this course in 46.8 with the same driver.
Agree. That surprised me.
No driver will repeat the exact same lap time in the exact same car consistently.
It’s 3/10 of a second difference.
Automatic has an advantage in a straight line. But loses its advantage in corners when it decides it wants to gear prematurely.
Manual gives you 100% control when it shifts. So only you can make a mistake.
@@KING0SISQO "But loses its advantage in corners when it decides it wants to gear prematurely. " - The I30N DCT does NOT upshift on its own when set to manual mode! So unlike the DSG from VAG you still have full control over when it shifts.

Suzuki Swift Sport (a model or two ago, if not current) is 200Kg lighter than the i20. Interesting given the emphasis Steve puts on weight.
And now the same thing - i20n against the Fiesta ST? Possibly once the Fiesta ST ‘22 facelift arrives….
I cannot wait to see all the Ns drag race and track race.
Both should have been manuals. Really an irrelevant result as the dct is more on trial here

Indeed. I could smell the pixels.

There is no new Fiesta ST. And ST is slower than previous Gen i30N. So its slower than the i20N ^^
@@philwilson3251 saw that one lol but Steve was not driving at the track with stop watch lol
Time attack both are tied, now do a event with more than one lap and the I20n will tkae the cake.
Imagine putting i20n on superlight alloys with Semi, throwing out back seats, light Recaro PP in front, light Lithium battery etc.
You know what at 20 years old and only experience is a 70 plate 1 litre clio I would choose i20n just on basis that every young driver should experience a hot hatch and they seem to be dieing thing as we go towards electric and efficiency. Defo my plan is get the i20n for one last experience of youth then go for the bigger cars
Any chance to see i20N vs Fiesta ST on a track?
These super hot hatches are way too serious and heavy nowadays. Has nothing to do with the pure light fun that could be had with the Clio's, 205's and the like.
Blame safety regs....
Who told you to be poor? If you want a lightweight car that won't break it's rear end loose, they'll cost you north of 50k.
@@boygonewhoopdataZZ you want a FWD that can break 'it's rear end loose' if you like driving. On command though please...
Dont be a boomer bro buy a fiesta
@@good_roads no. Too many problems with these cars. Know someone who sold his 4 year young Fiesta to a dealer because he didn't dare selling it to a private owner: everything wrong with the car.
I find with my i30N that my nerve goes before the car loses traction.
Got my i30N Performance two years ago for £27k, can't believe prices have gone up by that much. N mode is too harsh even for most tracks, definitely a sweeter drive in N custom with the suspension in normal mode, but agree it wouldn't be a better car if it lost some weight.
You need to consider that the car got a lot more stuff in it now and has been improved massively, even if it doesnt seem like it: improved suspension setup, improved suspension tuning (mechanically + electronically), bettter wheels (19 inch FORGED, which are 3,8kg lighter each!), bigger turbo, DCT automatic, better materials in the interior, better headlights, better infotainment. This all racks up and I think we can agree that the original i30N was sold a little bit under its real value.
When the day comes that I need to sell my 215hp turbo mx5 and go to one car, I’m going to have a really hard time picking between these two!
Shadow grey i30n fastback is what ive got ,drives like a go cart ,rapid ,sounds great and gets people looking and pointing at it.
mark houston the last two points are definitely not true.
i30 Sedan N/Elantra N if you're Australian/American is the pick over the i30N hatch. i20N if you want a hatch. The tech in the i30N hatch is older.

Am I the only one or the video looks like a TV show about cars more then a video on youtube? (I'm new to the channel maybe some people will say that it is a TV show idk)
U should have gone N custom, soften the suspension and let the DCT shift 4 u, they have made that DCT for track use, especiallysmaller tracks. Ur time would have been 1sec quicker, Also you should have used NGS too. Or do manual vs manual instead 🤔
I agree. Overboost is used automatically in manual on the i20 and i30n unlike the dct. He should have used it.
@@Damo1998 no overboost in the i20N

Ment to be new generation with CVVD technology. Same I think but evolution in terms of efficiency, not necessarily power.
@@taroitofilau3983 so maybe a new ecu tune on the sr/nline could give some good results also 🤔

@@taroitofilau3983 do you know if it has the same turbo ? I know the SR has a really small turbo, but I put a rs racechip on my SR and I do notice the boost increase, feels so much better.
@@johnmiceter i20N has an exclusive turbo system, including the intercooler and water pump upgrades above the SR. The only unknown is the CVVD technology, its machanical in nature and adds more moving parts to the engine which means more can go wrong, especially when it comes to tuning. Yes I've seen some big mods available now for the SR, especially here in Australia, big modifying scene here where the SR can compete with the i30N
