I am myself a tenor. I often hear your video singing this aria. I congratulate you for this magnificent performance, full of emotion and the right Jewish touch. I am myself of Jewish descent (Sephardic) but I don't think I could have performed it, in this special way, full of sorrow. Yours, NICOLA TAGGER
This is one of the most tragic arias in all of opera. And Maestro Schicoff sings it brilliantly. One can hear the self-blsme, the guilt and remorse along with his gorgeous voice. Bravo.
It's not only a tragic aria but a very tragic opera based on a true story ending in execution of daughter and her adoptive father by the Cardinal who was her real real father who right during execution was told by Eleasar that Rachel was his daughter.
I actually saw him singing Eleazar several times in Vienna. It is definitely one of my most remarkable memories in all my many nights in an opera. What an artist
@@mariofilippeschi4855 He got so many issues and vocally too, this one is when he came back after those vacant years. I love his timbre, squillo and A+ acting skill.
@@mariofilippeschi4855 I was told recently about this training short period with Corelli. Actually it was counter productive to him since once he used Corelli's method, his voice changed in bad ways, since he is not the same type of singer. Neil has to undo the habits of what was taught by C. Of course, this is not told publically.
I was actually in the audience for one of these performances, and can attest that this live was incredible. A truly great and sadly often overlooked artist. Many thanks for posting.
Every few months I listen to this to remind myself why we do this. Truly a momentous performance. Musically, dramatically and vocally stunning. This is the power of opera.
Fabulous. Acting, singing, technique, emotion, a very beautiful tone: masterful. Neil Shicoff was (is) one of the greatest tenors ever. It's a little bit like putting Björling and Corelli in a mixer.
Neil's singing of this aria wipes out ALL others, including Caruso. His French is impeccable, as is his acting. He was the whole package. Most opera lovers go for the voice. Wrong!! It takes a lot more than voice to do this role and Neil cannot be bested in all categories. He acts with his voice as well as all his other faculties.
+SHICOFF1 Hi! Steve! I was in St. Petersburgo last week! I've seen Niel in "La Juive"! He was outstandig!! So beautiful sounded his voice in Mikhailovsky Theater! He was in Great form!! Much beter , when I've head him in Vienna in "Queen of Spades". I met him after performance. Go to my channel please, if you want. Olga.
Right up there with the greatest Jewish tenors such as Schmidt,Tucker,Peerce,Tauber Etc. He appears to have become the most neglected of all the greats of his or of any age. Bravo! TY.
I think I'm in love (lqtm). This performance is tremendous. He has it all, the voice, the acting and almost a kind of dance that portrays the emotion. Wow !!!!
I sang in the chorus when he soloed with us (Boston chorus Opera). He's the greatest! Sad that he didn't sing more in Boston, and I'm not sure he sang much, at all, at the Met in NY. This was many years ago.
Shicoff had the finest voice among American tenors of the last 40-odd years. Here and there he pushes it a bit, and his vibrato widens accordingly. But overall, his work here is both beautiful and exciting --
Who else could sing that song with such perfection and true reproductions of Halevy's emotions ? I was lucky to see and listen Neil Shicoff some years ago in the Paris Opera Bastille Production. A great opera.
You were very fortunate to have heard this exceptionally moving aria (and the entire opera) sung by one of the greatest, in person . I read the plot of this opera and am just heart broken. Both Rachel and Eleazar were memorable people. The most heart wrenching statement comes from Rachel, after hearing the pleas of Eleazar to tell the officials that she wasn't really Jewish, that she was saved from the fire that burned her own home down by Eleazar who raised her as his own daughter. Her piercing words were, "I was raised a Jew; and I will die a Jew."
Wonderful masterpiece of Fromental Halévy! Neil Shicoff is (in my personal opinion) "the" Eleazar, and his amazing voice as well as his acting, make me completely believe in what is happening to him... Thanks for posting this jewel. My best, Raquel Barbieri
This is the ONLY time I have heard this sung as if it was an actual cantor singing a mournful prayer in synagogue It’s not far off from hearing a Kaddish or even Kol Nidre. He NAILED it.
He gives me goose bumps! I heard him at the Met in Faust.. while good. This is something else ! Brava!!!!!! This is some real singing !! It doesnt get better than this
Great!! my God I didn't know him before but I am more than impressed!!I was in Vienna this year but I didn't have the chance to listen to him. Bravo!! The most touching interpretation i have ever heard. I know nothing about the story but he still thrilled me! Thanks a lot for posting!!
Saw him live in Tel Aviv singing this role some years back, when he apparently felt ill but still went on - this did not deter from the performance. A once in a lifetime experience.

Amazing performance! Beyond beautiful and moving. Bravo! A great moment on the operatic stage by one of the greatest tenors of our time.
Straordinario. Da far venire i brividi. Che artista.
How many times have I returned to this remarkable performance? This is truly one of the great moments in opera.
This great artist wrings out every ounce of meaning and emotion in this wonderful piece. Bravo Maestro Shicoff !

His voice a miracle of nature .Thank great Neil Shikof
THis is phenomenal, perfect acting, perfect singing, he feels the character and plays the part wonderfully.
God granted me a gift when he allowed me to see Shicoff live in this production!
Wow! That is truly a blessing.
Thats more than singing My blood freezes.

Close the eyes and listen. Feel the sadness and anguish transmitted through the singing

Fantastic!
I have no words, this performance is gorgeous...thanks a lot.

Agree 100%.. well said!
well stated, "whole package", Neil is so crafted and sounds so natural, authentic... certainly best to me!
Your on another planet if you think anyone comes close to Caruso in this Aria
Perfect! He does it so deeply and with such anguish as none of his great colleagues.
Mind blowing 🤯. Good standard for this aria. ❤❤❤
I am speechless, so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes..
Perfect combination of singing, acting - I've heard them 'all' and Shicoff (for me) is one of the 'greatest'.

The most appropriate piece I can think of for this time of year. A beautiful, too seldom performed opera. And Shicoff was masterful in this role.
