Neil Schicoff is for me the best Don Jose. So incredibly moving and beautiful. Heart rending.. how could her heart not break? What a great musical artist. I aggree with an earlier comment ..this is what Opera is about.. the essence of it.
He sounds magnificent ! Totally musical. Great technical skills, without shredding his instrument. Agnes Baltsa sounds really healthy. Thank you for sharing !
I can't think of another tenor who can make this scene as hair-raising as Shicoff. I have several performances with various Carmen's, and Balza is best, but he is terrifying in this 10 minute finale, wherever he has sung it. Shicovianista
He does sound terrific in this video, better than his recording with J.N. ; but we have to restrain ourselves ... no tenor can sing this role better than Franco Corelli ; no soprano _or_ mezzo-soprano, as Leontyne Price !

Even in a staged performance you hardly see this kind of passion anymore. Looks to me like even La Baltsa was slightly taken aback.
