For me, this is one of the rare moments when an excellent singer with full controll over an extraordinary instrument transcends the boundaries of mere 'good singing', 'good technique', 'musical intelligence', giving way to a heart-wrenching vulnerability and abandon, an exposed and unprotected humanity. What makes Shicoff and his singing so grand for me is the fact that he never sacrifices the firmness and beauty of the vocal line for expression (as a more mediocre singer might do) - in fact, apart from being so touching, it is also one of the best renditions of the aria by technique, evenness, legato, phrasing, intonation, and other directly musical parameters. He achieves this extraordinary portrayal THROUGH his flawless singing, his understanding of the character and the words, transcending all elements further, merging them on a high level... Thank you, ditogam, thank you, Neil!
Немалую роль в этом играет то, что певец понимает то, о чем поёт. Нил Шикофф изучал русский язык, и фразировка звучит именно поэтому изумительно осмысленно. Надеюсь, перевод моих слов будет точен)))
WOW!!! I had never heard of Neil Schicoff till recently. He does an amazing job on this aria. This aria is a tricky one to sing, as there are so many nuances. He does this extremely well!
totally agree. Life is not a fair business, opera seems no exception... there are millions flocking into 3 tenors' site... not half as good as Neil's work.
The first time I heard Neil was the 1981 televised performance of La Boheme with Ileana Cotrubas Covent Garden. After he sang his Aria I could tell then that he had a rare quality to that beautiful voice of his. Both of their voices totally complimented each other. Later became available on DVD and my wife bought it for me . Thank you for posting this performance sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral
@@pryan5183 though Neil isn't Russian or of that back round language wise, it's still in terms of Gedda and his Russian back round with language, a choice for me of beauty, since he brings up Gedda, I'll say this, as a voice after seeing both in house-- his is only his own opinion and mine is mine-- and mine is Shicoff has the more beautiful voice for me, no right or wrong, so saying Gedda is much better is nothing, only an opinion not important for me, what do I care anyhow! He debuted at the Met in the 70's and I never understood why he didn't move right into Tucker's place in the company. I have read about various emotional complexes.

It is not the beauty that makes the man but his soul. When he pronounces her name "Olga" you keep for your very self all the dimension of this aria. It is simply amazing. So amazing that this small imperfection makes this aria perfect. It goes to you straight to the heart. The best interpretation I've ever heard of this. Simply wonderful. 🙏❤️
Wow...saw this in Oct or 2018 for the first time...would rank this with Wunderlich and Lemeshev. Why wasn't Shicoff better known? I heard of him upon occasion decades ago in radio broadcasts from Texaco at the Met on Saturdays, but clearly he was the equal of some of the "tenors" who had bigger play.
Neil Shicoff operatically bit off more than he could chew. He gained a reputation for canceling and also increased anxiety before stepping onto the stage. Also, he went through a messy divorce and a nasty custody battle regarding his daughter - and these problems sadly crept into his professional life. I last heard him on 2 Met Broadcasts as Don Jose and Manrico - neither role of which he was well suited. His tone had become far more astringent and a collection of raw nerve endings. Eventually, he phased out his singing career entirely. He was supposed to sing PETER GRIMES at the Met but evidently he withdrew from these performances.

Great interpretation, which this complex aria needs. But it stretched for too long and that throws Shicoff off the correct rhythm in the places where he should've count. Though despite been one the most beautiful it's not one the most voice-alined orchestral music.
акцент чудовищный, но надо признать, слова разобрать можно. а это не всегда бывает... в общем, вполне достойно, в конце концов, Ленский только вернулся в Россию и говорил по русски плохо, как и Татьяна (она по-русски плохо знала)...
