Hi Dr. Simi, thanks so much for this informative video. I wanna ask what’s the best method of hair removal for someone with KP that will help minimise or even prevent further irritation on the skin. Will you recommend; shaving, waxing, hair removal cream, or laser? Or is there another way?

Hi Dr. Simi, I developed KP in my mid-20's, and after researching I opted to try chemical peel, which actually removed all of it. But then it came back after a couple of months with a vengence, and now it looks much worse than before. Do you think this is just KP or something else?

I have it all along all parts of my legs accept the inner thigh, and I always wear long pants because im self conscious about what others will think. I’m also always uncomfortable when wearing shorts so it gets hard in summer. I never really wanted to peruse a way to get rid of these bumps until recently. I had someone who commented on the way my legs looked and I said I have a skin condition, and they asked if it was contagious. This really got to me and I felt really terrible about it. as a south asian teen with severe keratosis pilaris since childhood this video is so so helpful, thank you for focusing on the effects on skin of women of colour, i've got hyperpigmentation from scrubbing my arms in the hopes of getting rid of the condition but am trying to go through the chemical route from now. i find it frustrating that a lot of hydrating body cleansers and washes are so much more expensive in price though

    • @DrSimiAdedeji
      @DrSimiAdedeji  4 года назад +46

Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! As you've already noticed, scrubbing the skin leads to irritation and hyperpigmentation which will fade with time and can be helped using topical skin care products that contain tyrosinase inhibitors such as Arbutin, Kojic acid etc. Vitamin A (Retinoid) creams can also help and you may choose from non prescription formulations and preparations that are only available on prescription from a doctor.
CeraVe does a great range of inexpensive hydrating body cleansers including one that contains salicylic acid which helps with KP. Most CeraVe products also contain Niacinamide which helps to clam irritated skin, improve the skin barrier and help to reduce pigmentation. I hope this helps.

As the doctor said, it's a harmless condition and it can be easily treated. I personally don't follow any clinical treatment, I just use a good body moisturizer and that controls any dryness. If that condition makes you feel uncomfortable, I recommend you to treat it with a dermatologist, but it shouldn't have to be an impediment to develop social relationships, so don't worry about that. I have other skin concerns as well and it's frustrating to look on the internet and find only pictures of light/white skin or to go to the walk in clinic and be prefaced with "You have dark skin so it's hard to tell but (gives me incorrect diagnosis). I feel #seen

This is the best KP video on RUclips. I was just watching a video by the ADA and they provided the following KP tips.
    1. Keep baths and showers short
    5-10 minutes. Use lukewarm
    water.
    2. Use a mild, fragrance- free
    cleanser
    3. Gently exfoliate (AHA, BHA,
Retinoid, or Urea) skin once a
    week
    4. Use thick moisturizer on your
    skin. Look for moisturizers that
have urea or lactic acid in them.
I personally alternate between lactic, urea, and retinoid body lotions.

I’ve tried everything OTC and nothing has worked. All combos, all lotions, all acids, dry brushes, loofahs, etc. Summers and the sun have always been my savior as bad as it is as far as damage but it’s great for KP. Thank you for the information.

Hi. I'm sorry to hear that this is affecting your self confidence so much. if you have tried salicylic acid cleaners and creams and moisturisers containing urea you could also try retinoid cream. Some people report that microdermabrasion also helps although care has to be taken with darker skin tones not to cause hyperpigmentation. Failing that some types of lasers can also help with the appearance of KP. I hope this helps.

I visited a dermatologist and they gave me 2 medications which helped tremendously on the bumpiness. People told me it felt like I had goosebumps lol. Using 'cling wrap' on my arms after a thick layer of cerave SA overnight has helped my KP drastically. Lazy to create a YT video. But want to help people who have suffered with KP like me. Asian-Indian, female, 30s, light brown dry sensitive skin, lives in a city with low humidity. This is what I do:
Step 1: Wash with Cerave SA wash.
Step 2: The ordinary lactic acid 10% + HA
    Step 3: Inkey list BHA
Step 4: Cerave SA cream (thick layer)
Step 5: E45 cream (pat over) as I find Cerave SA cream isn't moisturising enough for my skin
Step 6: Wrap arm in cling film
Step 7: Use humidifier (I don't often as I'm lazy)
Took around 3 weeks to see good results.
    Hope this helps.

Hi thanks for the video! I'm in my Doctoral program and I have noticed a population of women that get KP as they age. So the reverse of what your saying. Although, I have seen many teens with it. In my research, I have associated it with insulin resistance and poor gut health.
With my KP, I got it 5 yrs ago and I'm now 40 yrs old. It's worsened as I aged. I started exercising more often and notice it nearly cleared completely in 6 weeks. I concluded after doing personal lab tests that I had the beginning stages of insulin resistance.
I also found eliminating gluten cleared up another good portion. I had a severe case, and have before and after pics from each step that I took, as proof. However there are no clinical studies to prove this.
I will say your advice is very correct. Hot water does worsen it, putting oils on it right out of shower does help hold in hydration, and I've noticed soap also worsens it. Inwanted to add dry shaving or brushing can aggravate it also.
As a woman of color, I actually have a "fair" colored skin, so mine does tend to look red.
It now, seems to come in bouts, aka flare ups, and I've associated this with severe stress or food reactions.
My question is can you make a video that compares the other conditions you speak of with KP (with pics) so people like me can learn to identify what we have? It would be really 😎cool with all the misleading info on the web to have a video like that. Your video was so well made!!! I believe this is the 1st time I have ever commented on a KP topic, as most videos are horrible and vague.
Thank you very much for your well researched advice and look forward to seeing more 😀

Hi Samantha. This is a very common condition and it doesn't cause any physical harm to you but it can cause emotional distress for many people and affect your self esteem and confidence. Its more common for KP to occur on certain areas of the body such as outer parts of arms and legs so if you really have them all over your body, you could try to see a dermatologist for an assessment and possible biopsy. As I mentioned in my video, there are also lots of other skin conditions that look like keratosis pilaris but that are not and a dermatologist will be able to explore these options. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much! I have it as well and they always told me that you can't do anything about it. Now I know I CAN do something about it! ❤️

For me applying pure, fragrance-free Coconut oil on affected skin is the best thing to do for keratosis pilaris.
    Please Try this.

I have chicken skin. I used to feel so embarrassed about it. Because everyone used to thought that i have some kind of allergy. So they used to get scared to come close to me. Still i m so scared that i will never gonna have a boyfriend because of this 🙂

I'm from Germany and dermatologists have been telling me my whole life that they either don't know what it is or there is nothing to be done. Noone even told me what it's called. I really suffered because of it as a child/teenager. I thankfully don't care anymore nowadays but thank you for explaining what it is and what makes it worse :)

Thank you for doing this video. I’m still not sure if that’s what I have because none of those images look like my skin still but, I really needed to see someone address what different issues “black“ skin can have. It makes a huge difference

Thank you Tracey! On my channel, I address the difference between Black and Caucasian skin in my skin videos and I also address any differences in terms of medical conditions in my Women's Health videos. For example, certain skin conditions are more common in black skin such as DPNs, hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring and black women are more likely to suffer from certain medical conditions such as fibroids, certain forms of hair loss and Type 2 diabetes compared to Caucasian women.
Even Bacterial Vaginosis has been shown in certain studies to be more prevalent in the Afro-Caribbean/African-American population compared to the Caucasian population.
It's interesting to examine why these differences exist and what we can do about them whilst gaining control of our own health. Hope you find my channel a source of valuable information and education! Stay tuned for more videos on skin and products and ingredients that I recommend that work for our skin. Thanks for your support!

I have KP and I've just never been able to wear short sleeves or strapped clothes or off-the-shoulders in my life! Always watched others my age look stunning in dresses that I couldn't wear because my arms would look hideous:")

I had mine since 9 years I’m 21years now, very embarrassing especially when someone try to touch your skin and finds out how rough it is💔💔I always thought I was alone in this, and I’ve realized that it’s not a disease just ppl having different skins

I've always had "chicken skin" on my arms and legs. I was always so embarrassed because they just look like red splotches everywhere. I have tried creams and things and nothing has worked for me. Thank you for this video! I really appreciate all of the information.

Girl, I started getting this “chicken skin” in my 30’s. My skin must have missed the memo about having it as a kid or in adolescence.

Ok...Because here I am in my 40s trying to figure out what are these fine itchy bumps that are appearing on my skin...I realize that they weren't blackheads or any type of pimple because when I tried to squeeze a few it was dry then around whatever I squeezed became even more irritated and itchy so even though it's claimed to be a thing among kids, teens and young adults I'm guessing it's a problem at any age...So here is fall and they've gotten worse...Used to be only my arms now here goes my neck and chest smh

So I’ve always had this but I never knew what it was. I’m glad I now know what it is so I can try treating it, because I always tried so hard to hide it.
