I am a woman who never learned how to properly care for her parts until this angel came along. I used to think that my 'self cleaning oven' was broken because of medical issues I was born with. I was suffering with monthly, if not weekly, bladder infections (have been since I was a child) and now I know that it was my over-zealous 'care' that was perpetuating my issues. And now I find out that I am removing my hair incorrectly too! Thank you, for educating me with dignity and compassion.

They don't teach doctors how to adhere to African/Black Skin types. They are mostly taught about fair skin and how to treat those types. Which makes it difficult to answer questions with a patient who wants to know more about the treatment for dark skin, they literally have no way to medically answer that.

Recently, I have found that growing out my leg hair actually encourages the problem. I am a South African 🇿🇦 woman of color, with thick curly hair. I live in South Korea 🇰🇷. During winter months, I suffer severely from ingrown hair on my legs because I must wear many layers of clothes that sit close to my skin in order to insulate from extremely cold temperatures. I allow my hair to grow out on winter months because shaving it off dries my skin out but the friction and tightness of my pants/thermals, directs my leg hair back into my skin. How can I remedy this issue?

The most i do is trimming for that part of the body. And when i go swimming i may shave the sides but it hurts like hell for days after. In my experience, it might also depend on the razor you are using on the "sensitive area". For example I always used to use a basic one blade Bic razor, and had minimal problems. But recently I used a really good three blade razor. I've only used it two times, and on both occasions I got really bad irritations and ingrowing hairs. I guess this is because it's such a close shave and the ends of the hair being sharp. This video has been very helpful. Thank you.

I've been shaving in the past because that was the method that was easily accessible and affordable. Other methods like waxing are extremely expensive and not everyone can afford them where I come from. I got to discover that shaving caused a lot of bumps and what I thought was pimples before which would lead to a lot of irritation and leave dark spots. It got to a point where it was so bad that this itching was disrupting my daily life. So now, I don't shave anymore and neither do I use any hair removal methods. The bumps and ingrown hair which I found out later was the correct term instead of pimples are gone but the dark spots are still there 💯💯💯

When I shave, I start off by shower as usual and I use my exfoliating gloves and I use these on the areas that I'm going to shave, then I use a moisturizing and softening conditioner (the same conditioner I use for my hair) instead of shaving gel or mousse. My skin is pretty sensitive, and I really think conditioner works a lot better. And I only use men's razors. They are more nice to the skin. Gillette fusion 5 is my favorite, it has 5 blades, and that makes a big difference. After shaving I wash away all conditioner then I finish with either extra virgin olive oil or a fragrance free baby oil. Olive Oil is my favorite, it contains antioxidants and other vitamins and things that helps repair damage. And I have never got any skin rashes from using olive oil. I used to get a lot of ingrown hairs, specifically when I used epilator, so I stopped and started shaving again, and this shaving routine works the best for me but I still get ingrown hair sometimes, not like before but 2 -3 ingrown a month. I have bought a Philips IPL lumea essential. So we'll see if that will fix that 🤗 thanks for your great information 🌺🌞

I tried shaving with coconut oil and had discomfort each time. Tbh the main issue is us wanting a close clean shave. I used to just trim my bikini area and hardly ever dealt with ingrown hairs but then I switched to sugaring and now laser and I have nonstop ingrowns😩

Hello Dr Simi, I love the way you explain the problem and give it’s solutions. I have a quick question about hair under skin- For laser hair removal, we shave the hair before the treatment which means that hair is gone but what happens to it’s rest under the skin when laser works, as laser only works on follicle. Does the leftover hair under skin get burn or stays under skin?

This video has been soooo information for me through the years now. Whenever in doubt about a skincare regime, I refer to this. Couldn't help but request this though. Could you make a video on your method of haircare? Love the way you carry yours. It'd be really beneficial coming from a health professional, taking care of basic hygiene and all - a non-cosmetic take on hair care. Especially for conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis.

Thank you, Dr. Simi, for this informative video. Question: Is there a home treatment for a couple of bumps on the lips of my vulva I can't seem to get rid of?
