    More pros: Good quality tap water. Better pay/salaries than elsewhere in Spain. Great fast train links to other parts. Lots of great historic places nearby to explore - eg segovia, Avila, Cuenca, Toledo. Tradition of free snack with a drink. Superb selection of national wines at oldest prices. Amazing variety of seafood.
    More cons: A multitude of holidays/puentes make reliable earnings difficult for the freelancer. Accommodation costs higher than many parts of Spain. Air pollution. Big influx in September making it hard to find digs Sept/Oct. A lot of places close in August (but not as bad as it was). When it does rain it really buckets it down.

      I agree with all of your list! Especially about the amount of bank holidays, which sounds great on the surface, but not when you're paid by the hour. Thanks for the comment!

    It is true. Madrid is not on the coast. But, curiously enough, this seems to be an issue only there. Nobody says "I love Paris but, sadly, there is no beach", "Berlin would be better if there were a couple of white beaches beyond the ancient Wall", "The Roman Colosseum is wonderful but so far away from the beach... "
    And the same happens with Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Moscow, Zurich...

    • @Orlagh
      @Orlagh  2 года назад +4

      Haha that's very true! But I think it's because the summer is so hot and dry so unless you have a pool (which isn't really common) it's a bit unbearable! Plus I think a lot of people associate Spain with the coast and holidays and beaches.

    • @Orlagh
      @Orlagh  2 года назад +3

      @@thomasmeyer1408 Wow, you seem to have a bit of a bee in your bonnet about my comment. I said unless you HAVE a pool, not that you can't access one. Public swimming pools are often jam packed/ you have to book a slot and there aren't enough pools compared to the population, when everyone wants to go when it's 40*+ outside. People who have pools tend to live outside of the city and share them with the rest of their compound. There is a reason all of Madrid leaves to go to other parts of the country in August. People go to the coast or to the countryside where they can access lakes/ a pool etc. Madrid is a ghost town in the summer. Do you live here? Are you Spanish? 99.99% of the people who complain about Madrid not being near the coast are Spaniards. Like most capital cities, the majority of people living in Madrid weren't born here. That's why people talk about missing the beach because a large majority of Spain is near the coast and people either grew up near there or spent a great amount of time near there. Regarding your comment about a 'tremendous educational gap', I don't know where you're getting your information from but that's simply not true 😂 The UK educational system is one of the best, flawed yes but there's a reason we are home to some of the best universities in the world.

    • @suspendedhatch
      @suspendedhatch 2 года назад +1

      @@thomasmeyer1408 "The US education system don't concern itself with these factoids because Spain just isn't that relevant here. We learn about Spain up to the point they were no longer a force in the west. Western education is focused on STEM and local history. While I fully agree there are large blind spots in our public education, I would hardly agree that our educational standard is "pretty low".

      Exactly, I am from Madrid and I don't want at all the kind of customer service that they have in the USA, which I find it very artificial and inefficient because being so worried about looking nice. So IMHO it is a cultural shock for many that a waiter or a cashier would not want to look like your friend calling you darling in here, but that is just because we don't like that.
      Somehow at Castilla (we are much Nordic in that matter that you could expect, Madrid is not Andalucía) we don't trust people that comes so friendly without knowing them, seems like a plastic feeling, and we do understand that a waiter can have a bad day as well but that doesn't make him/her less efficient as long as they deliver on time the expected orders or delivers the right service.

    We live in Paris. I am from the U.S. and Chile and find your video very interesting and helpful. I would love to live in Madrid. We are here in Paris for a total of three years, one which just passed. My wife works for an international company, she loves it here. I like Paris but I think I would enjoy Madrid and Spain a lot more. After this we are heading back to the U.S. We have a car in Paris but I am afraid to drive it here since the roads and traffic don't make any sense plus I don't speak French. I would love to have been posted in Madrid instead. My mother's family is originally from Zaragoza and Madrid. We have visited both places and liked them very much. Ir is a common error to attribute ideological reasons to the change of the time zone in Spain during the 2WW. The fact is that before the 2WW Spain, Portugal and France had the same time zone than the UK. When Germany occupied France changed Its time to the Berlin time zone. The UK also changed the time to the Berlin time zone for logistic reason during the war, so Spain and Portugal also changed the time to be in line with all the European countries. When the war finished, the UK and Portugal moved to their original time zone, however France and Spain stayed in the Central Europe time zone (I do not know the reason but in this case definitely not for political reasons or ideological affinities)

Actually, I lived in Pinto a long time ago, but I am not sure where to choose to live in Madrid, because I have found it terrible seeking flats in Barcelona (all super loud and some bad experiences with a housing company). Would you say there is a specific neighbourhood that is calm as you say? I am pretty much into coffee shops and working from there as well, but I am absolutely sensitive to noises haha :) But I also cannot spend a fortune on travelling...Originally I wanted to move to Valladolid and am still considering that and Vigo, but it's so hard because Madrid is great, but I cannot estimate these new places :)

      It's tough right! There are a lot of neighbourhoods in the north of Madrid that are more quiet and residential. Luckily travel cards here are affordable so even if you live a bit further out it won't be too much. For example I pay about €54 a month for unlimited metro/ bus and some trains.

      it really depends. I lived in Lisbon and my family is in Portugal. I live in Barcelona now but thinking about moving to Madrid. Are you planning to find work for example, or already have another source of income ? And Madrid is just cold during the winter, not a problem at all.

      I love Malaga, it's a very cool place! I wouldn't worry about Madrid being cold as it's only a bit cold in winter but nothing compared to places like the UK for example. Today was about 14 degrees C and I had a light coat on and was actually a bit too warm.

I am recent on the career ladder and I only have experience in teaching, so I am finding it impossible to find a job in Madrid other than teaching English. It depends on what you're used to really. But it does get cold and you need a good coat, hat and gloves etc. It rarely snows and is pretty dry. I wouldn't say it's as cold as the UK for example, but the flats here aren't as insulated so it can be chilly inside too.

      It really depends on what you want out of the neighbourhood. If you want to be central and in the middle of everything then Malasaña, Lavapies or La Latina are your best bet. If you want to have more space for your money try going slightly less central.

      They close earliest at 4:30pm but are also open Saturday mornings. It takes about 10 times longer to return an item in a shop here, often the customer support isn't as good. And in terms of making appointments etc, it takes longer or there is less online options available.

      @@Daniel-nt5gh I do move around as a local. I live here! I have a NIE card, residency, the lot. Yes you can get appointments on line, but often you wait well past your allotted time in the place itself or the people doing the paperwork for you are chatting and it takes forever. I am saying that after 6 years of living here, not after one random experience. Almost every immigrant I know here too agrees with me. I have no idea about the USA because I've never lived there. Maybe it's more to do with the experience you have moving somewhere new as an immigrant as opposed to someone born and raised in a place? As for the case with those files going 'missing' that is institutionalised corruption and is fucked up. I don't generalise and give outdated stereotypes about any one or any place. It's why I like to move around and really get to know a place past those stereotypes. Madrid/ Spain in general has many positives (as I listed in the video) it's why I live here! :)

  • @br3ak_

    I really think you heavily underestimated the cons. Fully continental, dry, no sea access, boring as hell after living there for more than 2 years, and colder than Barcelona or Valencia. People don't move to Spain for money, or they'd have moved to countries like France, Germany, UK, or Denmark, they do it for the work/life balance, good weather, coastal walks after work and fun at the beach every weekend.
    Nice video overall, I would have just hammered more on the fact that Madrid is way more about business, working and shopping than the work life balance most people dream about when moving to Spain.

    • @Orlagh
      @Orlagh  2 года назад +4

      These are the cons in the way I see them. I'm not sure what you mean by fully continental? But everyone has a different experience, so if these are the cons that you've experienced while living in Madrid then fair enough. I would also never call Madrid boring, there's something new happening all the time.

      You made a point, Madrid for living it is much harder that any other part of Spain, in fact where you live and how much you earn can make a huge difference whilst in the rest of Spain not so much.
      Having one hour of commuting it is considered to be lucky for many despite of the excellent transport network, but if you can live more or less close to work and have a decent salary (you can live really really well with 3 times the minimum wage, the problem is to get there), then Madrid is simply awesome, much better than Barcelona or any other place at Spain.
