I was born in Spain, my parents are from Equatorial Guinea. I left Spain when I was 24 to come to live in the UK and I'm married to a Nigerian and I have young children who love Spain. To be honest, I love Spain but there are not even a quarter of the opportunities for us Africans there as there are in the UK. I experienced racism all my life, bear in mind that I was born there so no foreign accent or funny business. I was never considered Spanish.
When I finish my studies I NEVER got a job that wasn't in a club or pub. No shops or other business would employ me once they saw my photo in my CV (Yes! You must add a photo).
Nowadays, I only go there on holidays to enjoy the weather and the food.
I might go back there to retire with my money coming from the UK though.

I never lived in the UK but I have visited London about 6 times and I absolutely love it. London is one of my favorite places to visit though I haven’t travelled much. I love the corner shops, the side walks coffee shops. I love central London. I currently live in the US and one thing I can say is if you want to have a quality life in the US, live in the suburbs. There is high crime rates in the cities. I wish healthcare is free. Apart from that, I love living here. I mind my business and make my small small money…

London is one of my favourite tourist destinations. I just hope and pray it falls into those 3 days of sunshine. My kids were like "Mummy do they even have summer here?" 😂 when I took them to London. It was drizzling and overcast in the middle of summer, so much that we had to go everywhere we wanted to go to like that. They could not understand the rainy summer.
I and my colleagues used to go into London almost every weekend like tourists.

Aunty Flo, thanks for making this enlightening video. I enjoyed watching it. I’ve lived 11 years in the UK and I’m a practicing medical doctor here. I have studied here, married here and worked here, So I have a bit of knowledge of different aspects of the Uk. I would agree with the points about the weather and that it’s not as “touristy” if you’re not visiting London. I would also agree that Spanish people are more friendly, warmer and more bubbly than the UK.
But...a few things to add from my limited experience. The UK is really more than London. London is quite expensive, in terms of cost of living and accommodation - I agree. But this is Just like say Madrid or any other capital city in Europe. There’s lots of other cities beyond London or cities close to London, which are brilliant to live with reasonable cost. I would also argue that the NHS has one of the best Health care systems in the world. I have been to a Spanish hospital whilst on holiday and I didn’t think there was any great difference to the system, however I was a tourist so I suppose that means I can’t fully comment on the usual system. I think the health care resources a GP surgery has access to here is dependent on the population in that area (ie older people, children, more disabled, more chronic health problems etc). I am a hospital doctor, and I still maintain that the health care system is top notch.
I think we can’t really generalise the whole UK based on a few cities in the country.

    • @FloChinyere
      @FloChinyere  3 года назад +14

Good to hear that the hospitals are top notch from someone who works there.
Everything I said in this video is based on my experience not hearsay and I did issue a disclaimer that I did not use the health service that much. This is my experience as a patient and this perspective is very important too because we are the receivers of the service a.k.a the customers. And I did not generalize. It's impossible for me to sample every location in a country before sharing my experience. 😂 Experiences will always be based on where the person lived.

Usually Denmark where we live is portrayed as a well-developed welfare state that takes care of its citizens from cradle to grave. It is viewed as a realization of Beveridge’s universal social policy principle, where citizenship or legal residence within the territory is a ticket to social rights for everyone. There would be a long line and staff would just carry on at the same pace and chat with each customer. I liked Spain and the property options are way better than in London! But I could not live in Spain for a long time or at least in the city I was in (Madrid as well). I noticed a lot of racism and miseducation about black people. Many people were really lovely to me especially once they heard my accent. They would ask me questions about where I can from and strike up a conversation. Others assumed I was a sex worker because I was black and many Spanish men displayed some horrible behaviour due to this stereotype.

Yes, their uneducated older, usually widowed men can have their vices. Capital cities also have their own issues.
Where I live, even though fewer blacks and other foreigners live here, they are very aware of foreign cultures. There are lots of cultural integration programmes organised by the local council and the aim is to use such programmes to educate and expose their people to the cultures of people living in their midst. And the turn out is always huge. 👍

It says a lot about you. We should stop with all this victim mentality because it holds us back. If you feel that strongly about Spain, to be honest it's better to go somewhere else. If you hate a land you live in this much, you will never make any progress. I prefer Spain but I will never describe the UK or any other place I have lived in as horrible.
If you love a place, you will look for ways to push forward. Everything is about your mindset. In no country will you move to and immediately be integrated. There are so many things to do, studies, exams, qualifications and in the case of Spain, the language too. And not just speak passable Spanish, it must be high level for you to integrate into the job market and do any job you want. I speak very good Spanish but I still feel it's not enough to walk into a government office with this my level of the language and demand a job.

The health sector is usually the hardest to break into in a new country but they are doing it! I know blacks who are into politics here and succeeding. I know first generation black immigrants whose children are doing great in sports. If you are good, you are good. Everywhere, immigrants have always had to work harder to get ahead. It's the same in the USA, UK, anywhere in the world. Nothing is handed over to you on a platter of gold.
Change your circle of friends so you'll change your mindset and move ahead. Spain is trying for immigrants please. Gave most blacks papers from being illegal and eventually gave them nationality. UK cannot do that for Nigerians even though we are their ex-colony.

@Louloo it seems you do really have a problem with people from other countries living in your own country! Understandable as it is, everyone has a choice of where to live and this liberty is guaranteed under the UNCHR. It is not for you to decide where anyone chooses to reside. Also the responsibility of assent for persons to migrate to any country lies in a state and not its citizens and it is governed by certain conditions. Also the world is a global village therefore its always better to have an open mind which is endeared to acceptance of people. Besides not everyone who resides in a country which isnt their country of origin is there because they're poor or underprivileged; People move for different reasons. Also people from your own country also move to other countries for their own reasons. It's best not to have a mindsetof stereotypes. A lot of Africans are law abiding, peaceful, intelligent, resourceful, financially stable and well traveled and not all of us want to migrate abroad.

@@FloChinyere It is not a matter of changing circle of friends, that is her experience which I also experienced as a physiotherapist. I lived in Mallorca for 10 years, a lot of my friends wanted to study nursing they were not allowed. Their opinion of blacks in the balearic island is 👎. Coupled with the fact that you have to speak their local dialect Mallorquin apart Spanish, though it was not compulsory, but anything that has to do with government or official matter is communicated and written in their own dialect. My sister it was really difficult. In the UK they will get you a translator, no matter the language, as it is counted as part of your human right, but they don't send you in Spain.

@@bukaino2k if anything you should be asking me how I planned my life so perfectly before coming here. I don't know where you got your physiotherapy degree but you can't come to a country with such a degree and not practice for a whole 10 years, a decade! Then blame it on racism. If you got your degree in Nigeria, our degrees do not match up to theirs because you studied in English so you need to school here to measure up. Degrees from Equatorial Guinea measure up here because EG is their ex colony.
I took a leave of absence and came to Spain on a visit visa for 6 months to test the waters. By then my husband also secured a UK work permit off mine. We had two options in case I can't integrate here work wise. I cannot come here with my Electronic Engineering degree without a plan. I loved it here and got myself a new job that would allow me live anywhere in the world before moving here. If it were impossible and my husband did not want to move to the UK, we wouldn't have married each other, it's as simple as that for me. Life moves are not random for me. I plan to the T.
If you had done your research, you would have gone straight to the UK (if possible) to be honest so I don't get it when people tell me it's because I had a job. I researched and planned my life. Help yourselves people, the government of another country will not do everything for you. The government of your own country cannot even do everything for you. Even in the UK and the USA, people arrive, pack their Nigerian certificates one side, do odd jobs while they study to integrate.
And I don't get what you mean by people wanted to study nursing and they were not allowed. I've met several Nigerians, either kids of first generation immigrants or wives that moved here to join their hubbies studying nursing here. I am not taking away from your experience but it's difficult for me to wrap my head around this story that this same country I live in denied people admission because they are black. Biko explain it to me.
But then those 10 years sound familiar. Can I take a wild guess that without Spain you would not have ended up in the UK? 😉 If yes, then you got something worthwhile from Spain after all.

Others also get incommodated when a person stares at them which is something normal here. Once you know a nice Spanish person you won't have to worry about fake friendships and in the security part, well crime rate is similar but Spanish police is way less aggresive, they almost never kill the person who should be arrested even if he/she is a murderer and has weapons.

Here in Spain, some people have stared at me and called me exotica especially when I make traditional Nigerian hairdos and dress up in Nigerian clothes during the summer but some people will take that the wrong way.
Just like you, I see it as people staring because they are curious, they saw someone different from the people they are used to and because the Spaniards are expressive like Nigerians, they will say something to the person as well. In a place like Norway, they will rather steal glances at you and they will not talk to you because they are not as expressive. So someone visiting Norway may say that they do not stare at people because they do not make it so obvious.

It's absolutely beautiful all the lovely things you mentioned about Spain. I went on holidays in Alicante and it was the best experience. I even dream of living there one day. House prices is also way cheaper compared to the UK. The only downside is that there are no jobs especially for black people so it will be difficult to survive. I have also read that there is a lot of discrimination towards black people. The Spanish economy is very weak. UK economy is stronger. The Spanish economy mostly relies on tourists and that is why they have built the cities for tourist attraction. Their lives are laid back which is nice but if there is no work then life can be difficult. With the tap...you were joking right? 😀 So what job do you do if I may ask?

@Ngozi Dibia. Ikr? The USA is not for the faint of heart in any situation.
But, as bad as this country is in some aspects, there is no place like the USA. Your success is only determined by your own determination and hard work, your race notwithstanding. If you can deliver the service they want of you, whether in an office setting, or in your own private business, 99% of the time, they don't care if your accent is thick enough to be cut with a knife. You will be gainfully employed. You can be pulling in income from a full-time job, and still have your own side hustle/business. Our healthcare system is shite, because we pay so much for it. But, it's comprehensive. When you have your 6 month routine checkup, your internist can order as many exams as you want. Also, if I call my family doctor now about anything that I am concerned about, I can get an appointment tomorrow, no waiting. The only place where you wait for services is at the emergency rooms, if they deem your situation not life threating. They deal with GSWs first.....haha, this is the USA after all. We have plenty of GSWs. So the point is, don't go to the ER for anything unless you are at death's door. Go to an Urgent Care instead. I learned the hard way.
But when I retire, I want to live in a place like Spain. I will like to enjoy that relaxed atmosphere and siesta culture. I mean a whole business shut down for lunch, unheard of in the Ol' US of A! Employees' lunch times are staggered so businesses are open at all times.

@@JanJan-pq4im this right here is the difference between Europe and the USA - that abundance of opportunities; an environment built for people to put in work and succeed, regardless of their background. The problem with Europe is not that they built an environment for their people, which was aimed at giving them the "most comfortable life possible", but their failure to understand that other people would also arrive, live there, and demand to have the same level of comfort. This is where the problem starts. With all its faults, the USA is still the 2nd best country in the world, the first being the UK:) (wink)

      Hehe.....that wink says it all!
I don't doubt that the UK may beat the USA in some areas, your NHS for one. But honestly like you and I have said, when it comes to jobs, the sheer abundance of it, and the opportunities open to everyone, I will not trade the USA for any other country......at least for now, my working years.
But once I retire, I may shake the dust of my midwestern city, and of the US off my feet....😊

Barcelona is among my top favourite cities. I have also lived in the UK (London) and I did NOT love it. Though there are jobs, you spend it back into the system. Spain has cold weather too even during their summer, you can't breathe or sleep at night because of hot weather even during their spring too when they have this dangerous windy that will keep one on the floor or carry your pushchair and your baby if time is not taking. They are beautiful in their own ways.
