Love that clip you inserted of Burke. Sadly I can't shake the feeling that Marvel and Burke have a lot in common, like fucking us over for a goddamn percentage.
😂
@@unbearifiedbear1885 greetings it is i
I'll take Burke over Disney any day. One is more convincing than the other.
😂🤣 What a fucking great comment! Definitely the best I’ve seen 👌🏻
Scrimshaw (bad ass name bro!)
I could picture the people
At Marvel cocooned to a
Wall- thinking of their evil mothers now, skin drawn tightly
Across her withered face as she berates them as they urinate on themselves trying to Make A Deadline, Yet Knowing NOT how to draw one! the reason they’re blaming their new fate on..
I see now what you guy's are getting at, and you know what that can bring down a house. So Marvel comics, listen up, the people have spoken.
Sadly, I've found that lots of marvel comic artists and even some image comics are taking shortcuts. They import real world elements and run a filter over it. Or they just blatantly trace over things. One of the most annoying things to see is the same panel copied and pasted 3+ times to fill up space. What have comics come to? It's pathetic
That's just disgusting yo!
And people wonder why manga is absolutely decimating comics in the sales department
It wasn't all that long ago that one blatantly copied Games Workshop designs in a comic and was summarily sued for a slamdunk, no contest case.
@@wolfehoffmann2697 that's funny considering how lots of Warhammer 40k armies/chars are blatant rip offs
@@DagobahResident as much as I prefer manga over Western comics, I don't think the use of real world assets with filters over them is a valid complaint. I haven't seen a huge amount of Western comics do that, and I have also seen a couple of maga do the same thing on occasion. Maybe it's a very common and widespread practice in Western comics, but from my limited knowledge of them, it isn't
The least Disney could do is let Dark-Horse finish all the great Alien stories they were in the middle of writing and then move the license fully to Marvel.
Marvels killing brands
Thats not how real world Buisness work.
Personally, as an artist myself, I didn't mind the artwork at all. There were weaker points, sure, but overall it was an ok vehicle for the really interesting story. Loved the very simple Prometheus Fire explanation of role of the Aliens. Sure, the artwork could be better, but I found it inoffensive.
Story was alright, could have been better if they weren't trying to make the xenomorphs into Borg. I hated the alpha alien, seriously how the hell can that thing stand up with a head that has four horns bigger than half it's body or even move through the ship without having to rip every doorway apart, atleast the borg queen looked decent, but i feel like i reading star trek borg episodes and not alien. The twist was cool with the synthetic but i had no investment in the son at all, i didn't care if he survived, by the end, the father is the only person you can somewhat root for and even the synthetic points out how much of a piece of crap he is, overall, wishing dark horse kept this, disney ruins everything
Give me a rundown of the story. I have no interest in reading it but that "Borg Queen" made me curious when I saw that image month ago.
They don't give much detail other than she haunts the fathers dreams because he had been impregnated by a face hugger but the alien was removed before bursting out his chest, this is the alpha alien, just watch voyagers episodes on the borg, same concept, because he had been implanted he now has a connection to the alien hive mind, just like seven of nine
Like i said, they are turning the xenomorphs into borg
@@christopherharte4741 Yeah I've watched all of Star Trek so I know what you're talking about. It's just that I wondered if it was anything more to it. I googled it and it seemed.... so utterly unremarkable.
While xenos kinda had a psychic ability like the face hugger cult that started the earth war making them straight up Borg takes away from their originality. IMO the best ability xenomorphs had were it's adaptability, queens, egg morphing, reaching out to people's dreams or minds as necessary, it all highlighted the idea of them being the perfect organism. Despite their heirarchy a single drone is just as capable or dangerous as a queen when it needed too. All this sigma omega type alien BS is all capeshit glitter I swear
As you already pointed out the story has potential yes but most of the key elements remind me a lot of the far superior Aliens: Apocalypse - The Destroying Angels classic story, it almost feels like Marvel are trying to play too safe which also reflects their choice of artist. Nothing too out there but also nothing too dull is a great way to summarise what they were going for.
To be fair it's hard to compare with Aliens: Apocalypse - The Destroying Angels.
The same as everything done by marvel. Safe. Generic
@SonofEyeaboveall Effoff I suspect Prometheus is strongly inspired by the Destroying Angels.
I really loved what DH did with unproduced screenplays and am sad they never got to release the predator one. I was hoping we would get more “unproduced” concepts , be it unused treatments for films, games etc. Aliens Engineers would have been good.
Unfortunately I was not impressed with what I saw. The alpha did not do it for me. I like the story associated with Fire Team more.
Marvel doesn't have the minerals to pull of Alien. Unlike DH, Marvel is too scared to look into those dark spaces.
Marvel did a lot of dark stuff and still does even more than DC
Those are some nice cover variants, but I still prefer some classic John Bolton art when it comes to Aliens
Denis Beauvais was my ALIENS artist of choice back in the DH days.
@@Flayne009 I wish he did more comics he only did like two which is sad
Thank you for pointing this out. A lot of the newer comic illustrators in the later Darkhorse issues also took to using McFarland toys as drawing reference for the Aliens which was very irritating as you pointed out their stiffness and overall lack of fluidity. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one bothered by this. It really does ruin the fierceness of the alien. Artists take note of this mistake.
That Burke cut hit me in the right place. I guffawed legitimately. Always lurk on your content. It's so good and I can feel you GENUINELY love the Alien universe like a lot of us out here. Thank you for putting out content, I would have never even found half this expanded universe without your contributions!
The problem is that you're looking at this series from an artistic standpoint trying to find it artistic value. Marcel/Disney is looking at it from a corporate standpoint. They just want something out there to allow them to keep the I.P. in their hands, they want a quick buck.
Disney owns both the franchise and marvel comics. The IP is going nowhere, no matter how hard they screw it.
@@shaynerawson878 sad but true
Sad reflection of our modern times.. People want it cheep and fast... Not us die hard fans tho, so we need to boycott.. And fast
Whenever you see a comic that has Salvador Larroca, Mike Deodato, or Greg Land listed as the artist, you can write it off as trash immediately.
I quite like their art tbh
Salvador is garbage. You seen his shit with Marvel Star Wars? Literally screenshots from the first 6 films traced over.
@@KikBlava so crappy I noticed it. Gladly stopped reading
@@jamespaul6315 it’s phoned in
The Greg Land Tracing, that’s always been hard to reconcile.
Ok I’ll be the one to say, is any disappointed by the first issue cover of the alien tongue design? It looks curvy and like a slither type of tongue. I don’t really know if they’re like that in the comics themselves. But I can conclude that all of the xenomorphs tongues are supposed to be a straight in and out head bite, not a tongue that you lick onto a persons face and bite in a angle.
True, only alien meant to be able to do that was the newborn alien from Alien Resurrection.
As you are a long time reader of Alien comics, I’m sure you know that artists as well as writers come and go on comic runs. The artists you don’t care for will have their stint on the book and then give way to another. This is true of all comics regardless of publisher. I would not let a single story arc or two (6 - 12) issues dampen my enthusiasm. There will be artists and writers that impart their style, perhaps one more to your liking in the future. Thank you for your always great content and honest opinions. 😁👍
Just finished reading them and i agree with you. This was a good breakdown of the first series
That cover art of Shang Chi kicking the alien is ridiculous. Bwahahaha!
I like it when the Aliens are something a bit Lovecraftian, something very alien and powerfull hiding out there in the cold dark space. As implied by the nightmare alien woman. Overall though it was nothing special.
Always loved those elements in the books.. the dream hijacking the Queen does and the more spiritual/mental aspect of their Alien nature
@@unbearifiedbear1885 Yeah the way the queens affected human subconsciousness in the Earth War comics was a great idea that should have been used in the franchise.
"it's Pathetic"-Burke. @10:45
Bro you had me laughin with that!!
Lol
It seems like they're already ditching some of the more modern canon. I'm okay with this up to a point, but some of the lore choices they've made thus far are worrisome. White xenomorph with liquid nitrogen blood? Ehhhhh. No thanks.
Holy shit that sounds horrible. "So instead of being black it's white and instead of the blood burning you...you ready...it freezes you."
Yeah very lame.. Creativity has gone down the drain along with our freedoms
@@todgerx So Marvel give us a xeno no one has done before, mix it in with refs to Aliens due to 35th anniversary, and your take is "Creativity has gone down". Seriously how about you doing something "creative" as clearly you are the expert on this. Not the best comic ever released but solid enough for a 23 page release. Quite dug the whole thing, though I don't want to go near trying to explain the biology involved.
It’s radioactive, not white. It glows because it survived a nuke. the radiation, and explosion didn’t kill it, and so it absorbed the radiation and it turned its blood to liquid nitrogen like blood.
Mike Maehugh's cover for Alien #1 is probably my favorite. I'm not sure why, the pose maybe? Seems unique
Thanks for the video!
As a comic artist myself, I can tell you with confidence that this was clearly photo referenced. Unfortunately, the artist wasn't skilled enough to mask it. It honestly surprises me that this art made it through as is being it's a Marvel publication.
I don’t understand what he’s talking about when he mentioned tracework.
Also what does “photo referenced” mean?
I don’t know anything about comic art :(
@@captainarcher5205 A lot of comic artists use photos of real people, locations and even animal life as photo references to illustrate proper expressions or realism. It's definitely not frowned upon amoungst artist. For example, I have a tough time with animal atonomy so at times I'll Google a horse or dog and use that photo as reference to illustrate into a scene. However, this particular Alien comic appears to be more light boxed then photo referenced. Considering the strange and inconsistant line structure on the faces, it seems as if this artist decided to short cut the process by tracing actual photos and possibly 3D models. That in itself is frowned upon.
@@thrdstooge
THANK you!! 🙏✔️
I remember a time when using references was shunned by the internet 😹 and yeah tracing over is not cool.
@@thewanderingartists A lot of big name artists such as Jim Lee, Mike Mignola and especially Frank Frazetta used photo references for both environments and/or character compositions. Those three are undeniable masters in their craft. It's mostly shunned by folks who aren't in the know as far as the process of creating art goes. Now, despite them using photo references they're not light boxing what so ever. It's used as a visual guide and inspiration as they put their spin on it. I don't think this Alien artest had the same work ethic in mind.
great review.. I appreciate you not giving away spoilers, too many channels do that for films etc..
I undescribed/avoid them.
keep doing what you do 👍!
🖖
I finally found a channel that regularly posts about Alien I’m a big fan and could not find where a majority of the alien fandom was residing, I’m definitely subbing!!
Goes to show how much Marvel actually respects the property by putting a notoerious tracer on it's first arc
Yep.. Don't wanna pay for better artists.. Means original idea never see the light of day. That's why Disney buying everything in the entertainment industry. I swear one day they will own the lot,
Great review.
Awesome review
As always, Alien Theory, your videos are thought-provoking and illuminating, often enlightening. You bring a lot to the Aliens universe and I appreciate you for it.
Hopefully something with legitimate art is next.
Great Channel!!!! Love It. I put it on and it relaxes and entertains me.
This video has echoed everything I've been saying too. You simply won't succeed if only half your comic works. The story is one half and art is another.
The wild thing is he's capable of pretty great artwork. The reveal of the alpha and those space goat things were great panels. But as you say, there's no dynamic movement and they don't look terrifying... not like Dark Horse Xenos did. It saddens me that Larroca is doing another arc. I hope this changes.
Artists should be admired for being creative, for being a pure artist.
“I admire it’s purity” -Ash
@@umporeon0132
And what this has to do with the comment?
this art is lazy and badly made.
@@deadoneeyetheunkillable3591 I was agreeing. An artist should take the time to put their own style into making a piece of art. Sketching someone else's work isn't being a pure artist.
Never even knew these existed
Thanks 😊
Besides the art issues, I actually really enjoyed this story. It felt very familiar and in Universe, to get us warmed in, while they plant seeds for potential future storylines. I don't know if this is a popular opinion but I enjoyed it!
Great outlook on the comics Alien Theory
Admittedly, I'm a casual fan of the franchise but your vids keep me staying around.
@Alien Theory, could you do DH Aliens Stronghold, just for 'Jerry'
Really enjoyed this video and it convinced me to check out and start catching up with Marvel's Alien comic. Just grabbed the first volume and am excited for the new series later this year. So far I really dig what I've read so far. Would be cool to hear your thoughts on the upcoming Predator comic as well. They got a great creative team for it.
Good vid little guy
hwo do i search this arc? i serach bloodlines and all that pops are youtube videos
look like 3d models with a filter applied.
Cause they are
Loved it, thought they did a fantastic job.
I want to see ur alien collection. From books to comics, figures, everything
I’m looking forward to more
I had to finish reading the last comic after seeing this video came out. I feel like this whole comic story was just to introduce a bigger world, and the way it ended kind of confirms what I suspected of Bishop's loyalties in just the last two pages alone (if not the last panel). I don't want to give anything away. But I will say, I feel like Iris's dialog was hinting at what we saw in the end, and what to expect from the company.
This kind of gives me a Twilight Zone or one of those other Oneshot horror story series that makes you realize there was never going to be a happy ending for the character, and that it was going to have a somewhat "who's next?" ending. Like a curse passing on from one person to another thing. This also gives me an MCU vibe in that this feels like it is just one story in what will probably escalate into a much broader confrontation overall. Given that we're only given a glimpse into whatever that creature is, much like how Thanos was being built up at some point after the first few Marvel movies proved successful enough to keep going, and it was "safe" to start dropping hints.
I guess for me, I was only really interested in seeing where they're going with this new story. I'm not as caught up as I once was, and I'm curious to see what they do, but not that invested.
I've learned to calm my expectations because nothing, usually, will ever be as good as what your mind might come up with.
I dont think the comic art is bad, it would score a 7.5 out of ten in my point of view.
So those artists are just re using NECA alien action figure hmmm molds, poses? This was a bad call marvel a bad call....
The action figures mostly come out at night, mostly.
Couldn't agree more!
Are the Omnibus books with the early comics(started in 1988?) in it worth while?
How many comics was there? I preordered up to volume 8 which isn’t released until 20/10 in the uk. I also purchased a few extra copies for some of the variant covers, especially 7 and 8; I love the variant covers of those, the woman sewing with the face hugger on her face and the one of the barn with the alien on the roof during the night. I only buy Alien comics and don’t ever read any other comics to be able to quantify any statement on the artists skill set. I just enjoyed the covers of the aliens in the unusual backdrop of the farm.
3:10 First time seeing this and for a moment I thought I was looking at some rejected Power Rangers villain.
Lol Salvador Larroca... slammed! 🤣
Growing up with adhd I've never been able to read books or comics because my brain just can't shut off and it becomes so hard so I find myself listening to audio books and love a lot of the alien ones
I wish I could sit and read these because they look great
I was very disappointed about this story, especially the Alpha Alien who looked ridiculous and like a Walmart version of a Praetorian. I wasn't expecting much from Marvel since their modern comics have been completely trash but even with the lowest of expectations, this comic didn't met them and I didn't liked any of the characters. I missed Dark Comics even more after reading this.
No
@Snakeoilresin no
i love Bishop! bring so many mixed memories, also one of my favs characters, together with hudson, vasquez and ripley! and the comics are ok, at least not a total fail
How the alien babies growing so fast, after they came out of a human body?
Totally agree. Liked the story, especially how it ties Prometheus into alien, but the art totally pulled me out of it due to the action figure poses.
DANNY! (Arnie voice)
"Screw your freedom!"
Is this Sid James vs. Aliens? Looks legit!
The greatest contribution of this series to the Alien lore is that the Xenomorph acts like the Universe's failsafe against any intelligence that would evolve to dominate it, even going as far as taking account for said intelligence's lust to manipulate nature almost like a morality clause, it uses our own DNA against us, our own strengths a honey trap to guarantee that no space faring race dominates the Universe! Even races that have seeded worlds like the Engineers, through their lust for control or knowledge they fall victim to the Xenomorph!
Sorce?
@@duckfilms3662 Alien 2021 #6 Here's a link if you want to read it, the part about 'Prometheus' Cleansing Fire' - ruclips.net/video/lmYp5yYykKc/видео.html
are you going to read this comic as you have done with the other ones as well?
Read the whole thing I thought it was pretty good. I might try to find my way through issues as time goes on but I picked up the collection of the first 6 issues and couldn't put it down.
I think a lot of series, whether television, comic, or even video games, often stumble, even fall flat on their proverbial faces, at the start as they are trying to find their footing. Marvel, in this case, I feel is no exception. They hyped their new product, if not over-hyped it, only to fail in some ways, but finding minor success in the initial release of Bloodline and Aftermath. I still have hopes for Marvel, but I don't want to just see the same proverbial dead horse being beaten again, where Xenos are on some backwater world or space station. I too want to see something we, the fans, haven't seen before, and as you mentioned, there are a couple new additions to the overall lore with the Alpha and the strange female, I guess could be called a "goddess". Naturally, while I'd love to see some crossovers, I'd like to see it done right and really well thought out, so as to not either contaminate the Alien timeline (like AVP/AVP:R did) or the need to create a whole new Earth reality.
i find it really uncanny how well a lot of these franchises snap together though common tropes.
Reminds me of the controversy around Marvel's starwars comics (they've been tracing fan ship designs and renders)
Yeah, that art is iffy. Not a patch on Dark Horse's work.
that cover with the alien's tongue / secondary mouth bending looks more like venom :
You have the best voice..
Havent read it yet....but I do have almost every single variant
I read all six issues but I thought it was just decent. I thought they could’ve put a little more into the story. It took six issues that have not a whole lot happen. As far as the artwork goes, I thought it was also just decent. There’s always room for improvement. And I do agree the depictions of the classic Zeno morph we’re fairly lackluster. But when you think back to many of the other alien comics, they were not exactly known for their amazing artwork either (outside of the covers of coarse). So I will wait and see how the issues go moving forward. Maybe marvel has a lot planned for it so they wanted to just ease into the universe getting started. But as always, I love your videos!
Bloodlines was really good.. I didnt want it to end
I have a book called aliens tribes great one awesome artwork good story!
I know this is a old meme, but, James Cameron:' Disney destroyed my franchise!' George Lucas:' First time?'
Agree completely, I bought it digitally, but probably not the rest. Cannot beat Dark Horse.
Thank you for the frame from 'Sacrifice' btw, one of my favourites. It moved away from the familiar marines and mad scientists on a space station stories.
The story was good, I mean I kinda of enjoy it but the art, I'm a freelance concept artist and illustrator and I must say that I cannot fully enjoy a story with an art like that, I mean is not THAT bad but using Neca figures in the actual comic is not something I would have done, you can use them as reference, sure but only as that. Anyone who collects these figures will notice almost immediately but well, that's just my opinion
Matt Frank could probably do justice for the artwork for Alien comics
Oh no doubt, he’s a blessing to every IP he touches. Last i checked he was working on red man but that was a hot minute ago.
Issue 7 comes out Wednesday Sept 22!
i havent had a chance to read alien bloodline but have read alien aftermath. what interests me is that least they are trying to stick with the enjoyment of the alien universe that we got from alien and aliens. the plots try to connect to what worked from those two movies. you can least see the sci fi/horror in the imagery.
Not even close to Dark Horse's quality. First they ruined the movies, then they ruined the videogames with Aliens Colonial Marines and now, they'll ruin the only remaining good thing in this franchise, which is the comics, with Marvel. The alpha is just so ridiculous!
To be fair Dark Horse made a lot of bad Alien comics too. This is far from the quality of the best Dark Horse Aliens though.
What about the audio dramas?
@@minicle426 I haven't listened to them. what do you think about them?
@@rojaws1183 agreed.
What issue did it end on?
Sorry but I disagree we can’t get or expect great comics from marvel. We have seen in the past and even more recently how they treat their franchises
As I said a couple of years ago - the greedy evil Mouse has the Alien by the tail now...
I was hoping the art wasn't traced, given how bad that is with the Star Wars comics.
So this being traced is just sad to see.
"It's pathetic!" Great insert.
I recon the art is that way because they're stressed and rushed to make it as fast as possible.
In other words, if he promised I bet they'd hire Leifeld.
The wonderful world of Corporate Comics, no risk taken, where "meh" is an achievement.
If rumors are to be believed it’s because Disney mandated to just pump out content as fast and cheaply as possible if marvel comics was to stay an in house publisher. But their laziness shows so heavily it’s made me not really care anymore to invest in multiple variants. Also aftermath was just too dumb in story for better art to make up for it. And to be even more cynical the effort in the variant covers is specifically because it sells more issues
Not gonna lie was going to buy these comic but now I think I'm going to hold back lol thanks for the info.
What happened to the old writers?
Yeah, me too, man! Every time I get into an elevator ... I wonder what will I see when the door opens.
I even dream about THEM chasing me at night !
Is this the same epsilon station from star trek motion picture?
I love that you're supportive, but have standards. If only the people in charge of the franchise held true to the same scruples.
I'm just happy to get more Bishop
Just want to say two things:
I agree about the toy tracings. Nothing was worse than seeing the exact figures he had traced on the shelf behind me as I read.
And also, I found the explanation of the Alpha and Xeno woman thing really confusing and I still don’t fully get it. (Might be me being stupid though)
Was that thing on the back of the Xenomorph's neck always there?
No you mean that weird fish skeleton thing? No they had nothing on their necks previously, just the tubes on their shoulder blade region
@@tarantulagirl Yeah. I thought I was not remembering them correctly. The tubes I remember.
Hey Alien Theory! Could you please do a video when the first Marvel Predator Comic comes out?!
This is happening with Warhammer as well. Lots of people are angry at new lore and lukewarm stories that become hard to read. The Marvel machine is big, but sometimes that means that it doesn’t quite take the time to care for the IP it recently received. All we can hope for is that those working on the stories are passionate and can convince the higher ups to take chances.
Makes me wonder with the three man team was there any parallel to the video game
