Through 3 whole campaigns NEVER have I seen Matt's eyes so full of anguish and apprehension entering an encounter as when BH pitched their fool-proof panic plan and kept with it. Man looked like he was about to sacrifice the narrative to avoid what might transpire but somehow kept up enough professionalism to push through.
Good advice, but difficult to implement, since there is technically no rules regarding the balanced implementation of NPCs or enemies with character levels at all.
Good point; and very true. But to that end: 1. Your players don't need to see your whole stat block. Edit HP or abilities you haven't used yet on the fly if need be if you're about to TPK. Or better yet, make something narrative happen. 2. Not every encounter must be balanced. Some of the most meaningful moments in this campaign (and many others) have been the unbalanced fights. I fully realize these can also be difficult pieces of advice to learn, implement, and master, and I make no claims to be anywhere near our dear Matt Mercer's level. But every table is different, right? Maybe what works for Matt or me won't work at your table. Maybe a book on hard and fast rules on NPC creation and balancing encounters isn't what's needed. Maybe someone should write a book on DM philosophy instead?
@@jonhaynie1987I'm running a survival/apocalypse campaign that specifically is unbalanced. A hive mind of astral butterflies hatched out of one of the twin suns on and descended on an already extremely dangerous planet full of selfish mages that will only work together out of necessity and likely never trust each other.
@@SocialJusticeClerici never really had a problem implementing bad guy npcs and BBE's with classes and multiclasses. I think out of the dozens of time i have done it i have only once had to mid combat start to ease up on the npc abilities cause he was a little too strong for the party, but thats the good thing as DM, if youre implementing something and realize it may be too much or too little you can literally change shit up on the spot. Oh did you just ace this npc i wanted to give the party a challenge, well little did you know he had allies waiting outside, and if the npc is too strong to weaken them its just easy as not using some of their better abilities.
I use character levels on NPC’s all the time! I think it makes the characters seems more realistic in the world, and it makes the balance of the battles really teeter on how smart my players are (the answer is very). I threw a wizard/fighter at them, a rogue/barbarian, and there was another party that they parleyed with that were similar classes, but foils to their characters and subclasses!
Damn, Bell's Hells commitment to the bit is killer. I love that their plan when caught breaking into some professor's basement, is "Who us? No we're not out of place in this guys basement, we are recording an orgy. That's a normal thing to do!"
Let's ignore the fact that they obviously should have taken the offer to get a portal back to anywhere in the city but here or even on the outskirts of it because that would have required common sense. Any common sense they have is obviously off on a different quick task right now because if Taliesin and his character had been at the table when they were deciding he would have pointed out that going back to the heavily guarded house was the worst place they could portal to. After they did it though you'd think they might have just come back out of the secret room and left it open complaining about the fact that they're bounty got away, it would have been the best way to avoid a fight and more enemies for a while.
I like how this group that is infamously known for coming up with silly plans and abandoning them damn near immediatley when shit gets hairy, actually tried to stay true to possibly their goofiest plan to date by getting naked and claiming they were just a group having a porno orgy in this secret room of a house.
In like 10 years when we get an animated series about Bell's Hells, _this_ is the fight I'm looking forward to the most, just to see how they handle the censorship
I would have them not censor shit. Now of course going that route does mean rendering it as erotic as it is no more or less. It is just nudity and they did not get to actually fucking. Even going so far as to give us a shot of full back equine nudity.
@@Deathnotefan97 well, yes and i find amazon cowards for that. god damn it society. not everything about nudity is sexual, even the pretend shooting of hardcore porn. also there is nothing wrong with some hardcore porn in our adult cartoons every now and then. as long as it is not too boring. might get the message across that this is not for children.
@@javisdosh6466 season 1 also has grog swimming in the acid fully nude. but those are easy scenes to censor. Lute blocks the pp, acid bubbles block the pp. Even the female in episode 1 was *partially* nude, but obviously the nether region was covered by scanlan or the sheets. I think his point is that the artists might have a VERY hard time taking the necessary creative liberties to properly censor Fearne and Laudna being FULLY nude during this entire fight. Thankfully fearne is a horse for half of it.. that helps. And laudna is in her form of dread the whole fight too maybe they just make her bottom portion heavily contorted and distorted or covered in shadow or some shit idk, but basically i fully understand where the original commentor is coming from. It'll definitely be very interesting to see how the studio handles it.
I remember Matt once said (I forget where) that his two favorite types of players were brand new players who had no idea what was possible, for whom the sky was the limit, and veteran players just fucking around and finding out again. That beginning was the latter 😂
@@hugojardmo4746 Matt brought it up in response to Aabria called out to Aimee Carrero and the way her Opal kinda steamrolled over her with shenanigans and really high rolls. Like the Nancy incident and the way Opal interact with the Spider Queen.

I'm reliably informed that Taliesin will return once he's done haunting Hasbro's waking nightmares with eldritch horror for extorting his friends with the new OGL.
@@KoraWade Hasbro has had a leak exposing they plan on updating their OGL (open gaming license) this is what allows for shows like critical role and dimension 20 to exist as their own entities without wizards or Hasbro having any control or taking a cut of their profits. It's how third party creators are able to make content and make money off of that content free from corporate oversight. Hasbro want to change the OGL and make it so not only can they say what content can be made for creators like I mentioned above but they also want a cut of their profits and the ability to just straight up cut out any potential competition that exists under the old OGL. Hope this helps it was a bit confusing to me at first but I hope I explained it well enough.
I'm catching up and the last thing I expected this episode was for an air elemental to assert dominance by T-posing over a half naked Bells Hells. Legit had me dropping to the floor in laughter.
They fucked up their relationship with Critical Role recently, right? Sorry, only watching since May, I am a bit out of what happened but heard about it
Same. Whether we got to see the party fully capitalize on the orgy premise or not, the scene we got was still legendary. I can't wait to see the fanart.
I’ve been catching up on c2 (I got into critrole in c3) and they did it a lot at least in the earlier episodes, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens on the twitch stream and they cut it but I can’t watch thoes it’s too late
@@magma2moose it happened a lot when the game was live but since the pandemic all eps have been prerecorded. It’s likely those discussions happen during their post session wind down and we got a bit of it because it happened before Matt could even fully sign off the episode.
@@magma2moose The twitch "live" episodes end exactly the same as the archived version on youtube. (Except with a few minutes of music and art tacked on the end, the same music and same art as they use for filler during the break.) I suspect Daniel Dyson's guess about pre-recorded vs. live might be part of it, or maybe there was just more mystery in C2, or as much mystery but more info to guess about. Now that we've had a lore dump, there's more to talk about in C3.
Obviously, what happened was peak chaotic D&D and I am very sad Taliesin/Ashton missed it but as soon as Matt established a spider could get out under the door I kept waiting for them to realize that they could put everyone but Fearne in the Portable Hole, roll up the hole and have her Wildshape into a spider and peace out... but that wouldn't be Bell's Hells ;)
Actually, had a similar idea, like all except for Chetney and then Chetney goes invisible and takes the hole out of there. But to be honest the way this turned out was freaking hilarious.
I really want to know what the executives at Capitol One thought who were probably watching for the first time. And I really hope that marketing employee who worked so hard to convince his bosses to sponsor an episode of CR didn't get fired for this, hahaha.
I’m so happy for Ashley that she found Fearne. It’s her best character ever by far ! She allows her to be creative, clueless, mischievous, seductive and silly in all the best of ways !
I was thinking that as soon as I saw her in ExU. But what's interesting was in a 4 sided dive, Ashley talks about how each character was a part of her personal journey at that time as well. Even though Fearne is so perfectly her, the other two characters were aspects of her as well, and all came in their right time.
my favourite part is that after the fight they had like 50 seconds to get out before banishment wore off, and in that time, they didn't have time to go grab their clothes from the basement. so i'm picturing Chetney and Laudna half-naked trying not to draw any attention while walking around in the middle of town 😂😂
It's actually hilarious how badly they rolled for that part of the game. I mean, these are the same dice gods that allowed Orym to successfully play a 4-year-old girl.
@@marauderdz Agreed. Especially because - let's face it - they had a pretty good plan. Their skills and their commitment to the bit made it legit plausible imo

In this campaign, Matt's tone shift in villainous motive is so great. He manages to make every antagonist feels so real, like real people who are just a product of the troubles they lived through as with the example of Tuldus
This is how it happened, I will fight someone ( I mean, I WILL lose but I will give it a concerted effort): Capitol One, in the Zoom meeting after landing The Deal: YEAH! we're gonna get a promo from a popular D&D Group! 1:00:48 What I like about his response is that it implies he does actually think it's a porno being filmed down here. In this moment, he just thinks that a Ruidus-born is filming a porno.
I started that episode going 'ha classic chetney moment' And then I was like 'wow they're really considering that, title must be in reference to that And then fearne took her dress off and I was like' wow classic fearne' And then laudna took her blouse off

I thought this was gonna go "Almost exactly four years ago I watched the first episode of campaign 2 as my entry point into CR. This is the horniest most chaotic I've seen them since."
I've been waiting for it as it feels inevitable. I hadn't watched EXU so when I started C3 I initially thought Orym, Fearne and Dorian were a throuple.
I mean that 1 enemy wasnt no joke. Multiple legendary actions and resistances, they were practically fighting a Ancient Dragon just without its breath weapon at that point.
Man Matt's character writing is so good!! I can't get over how many layers he gives to his NPC's. Just look at Tuldus for example. This guy was a normal enemy caster for our heroes to beat the crap out of in the house and yet, he has so many sides to him. He can go from intimidating zealot to a pathetic, parasocial fanboy to a tragic individual in ONE CONVERSATION!!! One conversation and I already want more of him! The way Matthew can make us see different sides to this individual makes the character and the world feel so lived in! Such great writing *chefs kiss*
Please let this be leading to Vox Machina, Mighty Nein and Bells Hells teaming up in such a way that each player has 2 characters, and they fight a god eater.
My assumption is if they plan this right we will have … well. bells hells, the crown keepers, and vox machia and or whoever Rynn has on her payroll striking the three sites.

It's very refreshing to see that even in one of the most popular DnD live streams on the planet, staffed entirely by incredibly talented actors, can descend into deranged, horny nonsense.
I love the exchange between Equine-Fern and Imogen at 2:38 . It makes perfect sense that Imogen could respond to Fern despite not being able to cast Speak With Animals. Her experience with horses from her backstory is all she needs. These little roleplay moments are why I love this show!
Hey Critical Role Team! I hope you all will use your influence to oppose the recently anticipated Hasbro/WoC licensing moves. It's third-party creators like you that make D&D such a rich ecosystem, and the top TTRPG system. You've got the power. I appreciate all WoC has done, but their tendency toward control/ restrictiveness is slowly choking the life from community content - and I doubt it's making them richer than they'd otherwise be.
I'm sure they're looking into it, but people need to remember that they are a company with legally binding contracts in place (and probably some NDAs), so they are going to have to make sure all their i's are dotted and t's are crossed before they can say or do anything publicly. From what little I've gathered from seeing tidbits of conversations from various people on the periphery, it seems to be a certain handful of suits who are the issue and have been for some time (Eric Campbell mentioned and incident back when CR was still with G&S), so hopefully something can be done internally to shake things up.
I agree they have a lot of influence but they're on a different level and probably has a sweetheart contract versus 25% other creators would have to give up and me personally I'm hoping all the other creators move to a different system and after 30 years of DnD I'm leaving and moving over

"Enemies can multiclass too." Best DM advice ever.
Good advice, but difficult to implement, since there is technically no rules regarding the balanced implementation of NPCs or enemies with character levels at all.
Good point; and very true. But to that end:
The best part about the first hour or so is knowing Matt will have to recount it next episode and no one will let him skip it
I want to thubs up this, but it's at 69 so I can't ruin perfectly
Damn, Bell's Hells commitment to the bit is killer. I love that their plan when caught breaking into some professor's basement, is "Who us? No we're not out of place in this guys basement, we are recording an orgy. That's a normal thing to do!"
It… is.
It's all about confidence
Let's ignore the fact that they obviously should have taken the offer to get a portal back to anywhere in the city but here or even on the outskirts of it because that would have required common sense. Any common sense they have is obviously off on a different quick task right now because if Taliesin and his character had been at the table when they were deciding he would have pointed out that going back to the heavily guarded house was the worst place they could portal to. After they did it though you'd think they might have just come back out of the secret room and left it open complaining about the fact that they're bounty got away, it would have been the best way to avoid a fight and more enemies for a while.
@@riverlady982 I concur.
@@riverlady982 But where's the fun in that?
Where ever it's streamed might not be in favor of full nudity, so it'd have to be handled creatively
Episode one of Legend of Vox Machina has Scanlan nude behind a lute and a naked elf, so I think they can get away with some nudity for this scene.
I was thinking that as soon as I saw her in ExU. But what's interesting was in a 4 sided dive, Ashley talks about how each character was a part of her personal journey at that time as well.
Really hoping WoC don't go the direction of Games Workshop and kill all the fun the community creates
I agree they have a lot of influence but they're on a different level and probably has a sweetheart contract versus 25% other creators would have to give up and me personally I'm hoping all the other creators move to a different system and after 30 years of DnD I'm leaving and moving over

If CR side with WotC, I'll 100% be done with CR.
I wonder what Tal's input could have been in this insane opening battle.
mollymauk would have had the BEST TIME
"Minus a D4"
2:07:40 Travis' dice roll was the perfect accidental sound effect for Paté's spider scuttle
So based on this, Taliesin is definitely the plan guy, right?
They're the "smart about your stupid" guy. They're down for the crazy ideas, but still want to be vaguely smart about it.
Orym is supposed to be a plan guy but gave up on trying it seems 😂

Man, how people can watch this episode and still say that CR went too corporate and clean with their content is beyond me.
And that friends is how you start your first episode of the year.
