Even if Matt had a few rhymes already prepared, that had to have been a nerve-wracking segment to run--kudos for having the courage and skill to pull it off!
@View Bot Because that's what DMs do. They can't prepare for everything the players decide to do, so they prepare for the parts they know for sure will happen (like a rhyming gatekeeper). I don't think he had them all prepped, I just think he probably had at least a few rhymes in his back pocket (including probably some he didn't use) because he knew he'd need them.
@View Bot He's broadcasting this to the world, he doesn't want it to fall flat. He would have thought "Okay, what do I know the players have, what are they likely to offer as tribute?" just to have a rough idea if it would work. So he'd be able to immediately realise that Chetney would provide some small wooden toy and come up with an easy answer for that one, and then just have a bunch of rhyming words ready as guidelines in case they helped.

I never noticed that till now. Good call! It's even sadder because the Gentleman managed to be the best of her 3 dads, even though he was completely absent for Jester's childhood AND he repeatedly denied being her father for most of the campaign. And yet, he still wound up being so protective and sweet. ♥️
That's... not true at all? Imogen's dad strikes me as way better than the one you're referring to. The perceived distance may be Imogen's vs Jester's attitude about it.
@@harrisonw1002 just because he was there doesn’t mean he was a good/great father. He distanced himself from her and resented Imogene’s powers and mother. Emotional neglect is still wrong. He took his pain out on Imogene and isolated her from knowledge of her mother that could’ve helped her heal and with knowledge of her powers.
@@harrisonw1002 The Gentleman is a caricatural father trope that can be romanticised. So it's easier to defend. Mr. Temult on the other hand is nothing special. Just a regular guy, with the regular issues of the regular dad facing a (sadly)regular delicate family situation. Something very common IRL. And probably among the parents of people who heavily rely on YT's comments for escapism. Bottomline? Although technically correct, you forgot most people don't wanna be denied an emotional punching-ball: Mr. Temult needs to be shitty so we can be justified in hating him. This is losing battle. In my opinion, anyway.
@@mikefunni7486I just binged all the narrative telephone episodes before I began my C3 rewatch and OMG THEYRE HILARIOUS. The ones with Aimee are the best though.

58:50 Watch Matt's face....he knew they forgot that and was seeing if anyone would catch it. Oh you know he had some kind of consequence dreamed up for them if they forgot.
Actually, you're supposed to roll for whether you lose time or not. D20 roll where the lower you roll, the less time you lose. (A 20 could've lost them several YEARS)
Matt has done a staggeringly good job making the Feywild feel like an old-school fairytale come to life. Everything about it was so evocative - I hope we get to see more.
Matt has always been great at giving his fey realm that classic fairy tale vibe, the magical and cute 1 moment to being absolutely terrifying and deadly the next. He doesnt have his players go there very often in his campaigns as well which keeps that magical unknown feel to it even for his players.
I love what he did with Morri and her house. Her and the house feel like magical and scary, like it could be a dream and give a panic attack at the same time 😅
@@ladyhella7560 it had an Alice in Wonderland feel almost, whimsical and "fun" but you know these creatures have a very different idea of "fun" to you. Kinda like how Fearne is often sweet and lovely but occasionally shows that she's very much different and fey
57:47+: "In my journey I have not been nimble....." says Taliesin and the start of one of the best rhyme sharing scenes in this game. Matt gets an AAA+ for mastering the skill of a one eyed rhyming ogre.
The fact that the barbarian with a SIX Charisma outshines all the rest of them (including the CHA 15 Imogen who needed TWO tries to get through) was just karmic perfection.
The fact that Matt says for Marisha and Liam to roll mystery checks really makes me think it is to see how Baeu and Caeb are doing with their investigation.
@@iddomargalit-friedman3897 I think the first commenter might be right. Marisha and Liam are the players for beau and Caleb so it makes sense it would correlate. I think the rolls matt made without saying anything were for ryn and the shadow fell team
Okay hats off to Matt in this episode! Not only the rhyming but all the fey sounds- the wings, the fire, trees crackling, even the deadly mud! It was all perfect
The amount a Morri hype in the chat when watching the stream was hilarious. She's the MVP for sure. I like that Matt gave them an ally that is willing to help, but they are limited to how often they can ask her, seeing as she is in another realm. I think him choosing to have Ryn turn to stone was a way for him to stop them from relying on her too much as well. He gave them a skyship, and they should be using it. They are also quite close to where they need to be. A part of me wonders if what happened to Ryn would have been avoided if they didn't contact her.
I wonder who caught that bit about reparations. Apparently even Nanna Mori's help isn't absolutely free lol. As for Ryn well there are many DMs who go the living world route. Which means it could well have happened regardless once they got involved with the Grim Verity at all. As far as help goes I think that struggle has more to do with it being their story. Matt doesn't seem to want them to rely on NPCs overly much. That being said an airship is hardly going to get them to the Shadowfell if they end up deciding to go there still.
They need to crash that ship straight into the Malius Key! That would have to be enough to take it out. Starting at high altitude just fly straight down that pit and BOOM!
@@thomasbrovont4114 my thoughts exactly. Have the hole ready, everyone jump in before impact, and have fearne shape shift into a bird and take the hole with her. Two problems solved - the key, AND paying the crew after the year's pay from treshi ends.
@@Cador-sr1ws That should hopefully work if they hit level 9 before reaching the key, cause Fearne can't wild shape into flying forms just yet with her levels split between druid and rogue. Imogen with Fly can probably carry the hole too but that's going to be really conspicuous.
not sure how they would pull this off but I was thinking they need a massive crossover, Bells hells and the Crownkeepers team up for something, Abria would have her work cut out for her, and where would they sit like 4 or 5 more people? Maybe at a convention?
Honestly, he fit in so well with the group he should get more than just a guest appearance (if he wants, of course). The promotional material also lists him as a member of Bells Hells
The instant switch from the words "mother' and "father" to "mama" and "daddy" made my heart break. At the end of everything, Imogen is still just a scared kid who got caught up in her mother's past.
@@mutedimagination666 She didn't kill anyone. she attacked people who were hurting or threatening Laudina, then they left before they could see the outcome, her father said they alll recovered.
I love how the "iron tithe" is clearly a blood sacrifice, but none of them are paying attention to Matt's emphasis. Then when Imogen rolled a low intelligence check... I could see Matt wanting to be frustrated about it, but he held it in lol
I know right, it was so frustrating. And when they were throwing iron items and it wasn't workong their minds went to 'the items must not be real iron" instead off, it meaning blood. Especially after matt described at both imogen and ashtons case how their legs were soaked in blood.
As an almost-forever-DM, I know that feeling of wrestling the instinct to reach out and beat your players with the obvious answer as if it were a rolled up newspaper. Some days they deduce things that seemed preternatural... and others (not with rolls, either way) they seemed thick enough to stop hard rads. The nature of the game.... 😁
To be fair, fey are constantly portrayed as having a weakness to iron in popular media, so it wasn’t like iron tithe meaning actual iron was impossible.
They did think it was blood earlier when they first heard the warning but it seemed like they thought it was too obvious and looped back around to it being literal
I hope when Imogen eventually confronts her mother to leave the Ruby Vanguard, she ends her persuasion by saying "Run Liliana! Run!" Would be super poetic.
there has been a point in that man's life he just stopped caring. Both women in her life left and he couldn't do anything to stop it. The most heartbreaking thing is that he couldn't love imogen because of the "curse" and the damage it could bring

He did have time to prepare, that guardian wasn't made up on the fly. How much he prepared and how much of the rhyme was improve only he will know. (Unless he spilled durring 4 sided dive, formerly talks machina)

Cold iron is kind of thing for fey. Much like silver for lycanthropes. It's just not a mechanical one in 5E. As far as blood goes though it did cause injury and would have devoured them. So I'm not so sure it was a solution. As far as I recall Nanna Mori gave a noncommittal answer.

I'm 30 years old and in the middle of trying to earn a nursing degree. I've been in and out of postsecondary education for the past 13 years because of the depressive episodes of my bipolar disorder; I had to write a letter of appeal to my school's Senate to be able to return to the program this time. Lately, it's been bad enough again that I've been missing classes and clinical shifts and leaving assignments unfinished, barely having the energy to handle basic daily activities. I just recently had to break up with my partner, with whom I had become a foster parent and purchased a house, having had to move out of the house and leave the kids with her. Trying to stay connected to the kids for whom I had become a parental figure, handle my academic responsibilities, and take care of myself in the midst of this stress has been exhausting. Professors have been trying to reach me, but I've been dwelling on burning what feels like my last chance to get a degree and career and just giving up altogether on life. I've been numbing myself with RUclips and video games; I discovered Critical Role back in its early days but still, the hours upon hours of recorded video help to occupy me when I can't sleep. I see that the latest episode of Critical Role is up and click play and SAM MOTHERFUCKING RIEGEL, as part of his usual buffoonery in shilling the show's sponsors, tells a very real and touching story almost eerily similar to an experience I've had in my clinical placements. I'm crying something ugly as the bit finishes because somehow, it was exactly what I needed to hear. While the episode plays in the background now, I'm going to email my professors and figure out what I can do. Sam reminded me that I'm still needed, and that I still have a chance.
BP disorder is a PITA and a half (right there with you on that one) -- and as someone who also suffered her way through graduate school amidst an ocean of troubles, I can only wish you well, and hope that things turn around for you SOON. Deep breaths - you WILL get there. You may slow down, you may swerve, you may even need the more-than-occasional rest stop... but you WILL get there. To quote the ever-awesome Liam O'Brien, "The world is still there for every single one of us." Light and love to you. :)
Oooor you can roleplay it as actual guidance your character gives. 🤔 Wait, was it how it was intended? Plus it would limit the tendency to guide everything even when it doesn't make sense?!? Scratch that! Too boring.
Who would have thought id spent the last part of the episode crying like a supid mess. It's been years, but her name was Tanit, her fur was the colors of a full moon, her mane white as sparkling snow, she always tried to drop my glasses and loved hugs and earrubs. i miss you so much darling 🐎💔
Considering how she managed to use the effectively as Beau at early levels I'm not surprised she got them again. (The gnoll mines fight made beau the monk seem really awesome with the ball bearings, dodge action, and deflect missiles protecting the rest of the party for like 2 rounds) Its been a while so the details are fuzzy, but considering how she used them for something basically every episode as Beau its safe to say that Marisha considers the bag of 500 ball bearings a very useful basic item. (Either in combat for making difficult terrain, or out of combat as something to throw into voids to see how deep a pit is)

That rhyming section was amazing!! Still think of myself as a new critter, though I’ve been here for all of this third campaign, so to see Matt being so amazing…wow! That was incredible, and he certainly was doing those on the fly. Man…so good!
I doubt they ever will and they probably shouldn't, but I kind of want the Bell's to meet Caleb, Beau, and Essek. Caleb and Beau will be very interested in the whole _Ludinus is an immortal supervillain_ thing and Essek will be fascinated by Ashton's status as a walking vial of Luxon-extract not to mention the fact that the beacons are probably the scattered remains of those two deities that thing ate: a discovery that would be the culmination of his life's work. Also, he wouldn't fit with this group's vibe but the fact that two of them are functionally immortal, one has the potential to be, two are going to naturally live at least another 300 years, and Chetney is probably consecuted or something (/j but no really) would solve the whole all-of-his-friends-are-going-to-die-in-70-years issue.
Sam's message to Ryn (along with Laura) was just another perfect example of his brilliant comedic timing. I was watching this while on public transport and had to apologise to people sitting around me for my absolute cackle at this.🤣

Terrosh might be one of the coolest creatures/NPCs I've ever seen, Matt truly has a gift for portraying the fairy tale nature of the feywild, especially the darker fairy tales
Caught up with this campaign, watching the animated series for vox machina, and now making my way through the mighty nein. So much to keep track of and piece together lol
I feel like laura was going for something like "I said before, and have not lied, for through this land we've ridden. I offer this, that you may hide, so go now and be hidden," Which definitely has a better rhythm to it. She just switched the first line and was too committed at that point.
Fearne couldve gone with intimidation: "You may not know me, for i am a granddaughter of Morri; you may not want to bother me, or else you might be sorry"
I thought up a decent one for Fearne. "Now before I rhyme, do you know of Morri? Because its about time, I told you a story." and gift a book or a quick story of Morri.
*spoiler* The whole Torrosh moment is a prime example of how you can inject a tiny bit of levity into an incredibly tense moment and have it elevate the scene so far. I’d say it’s up there in my top ten campaign 3 moments so far
Ashton's big brother energy towards the three witches, but especially Laudna, is so endearing to see. As an older brother myself, I definitely understand those protective instincts of I can mess with my siblings but anyone else who does is in for a real bad time

@@ematuskey also, there always a free time for u to think with about plot/whatever - just make another check. That'll give u a few seconds while they are rolling, then a few more when u just started to explain and so on

when you think about it, the criminal mastermind was the best dad that any of Laura's characters ever had. That is concerning

Matt has always been great at giving his fey realm that classic fairy tale vibe, the magical and cute 1 moment to being absolutely terrifying and deadly the next. He doesnt have his players go there very often in his campaigns as well which keeps that magical unknown feel to it even for his players.

They did think it was blood earlier when they first heard the warning but it seemed like they thought it was too obvious and looped back around to it being literal
that went over my head too, i just thought it was a reference to like-likes from zelda lol

Sam reminded me that I'm still needed, and that I still have a chance.

its crazy to see critical role making mondays actually worth waiting for but then again its critical role and i love them it
Love the little "11 days" reference to Spurt.
*spoiler*
The whole Torrosh moment is a prime example of how you can inject a tiny bit of levity into an incredibly tense moment and have it elevate the scene so far. I’d say it’s up there in my top ten campaign 3 moments so far
how funny FCG slowly turns into Two-Face from Batman with coin and dual personality :D
Ashton's big brother energy towards the three witches, but especially Laudna, is so endearing to see. As an older brother myself, I definitely understand those protective instincts of I can mess with my siblings but anyone else who does is in for a real bad time
I love how Ashton is a tank and yet not easy to be controlled since the tank seems to always be targeted by the enemy to be turned on their team
