The upper spring mount rusting out can happen on any of the trucks with A/C. It's from the condensation drip tube and dryer dripping water on it constantly. That's why the drivers side can appear mint.
@@tyhewitt4858 The two glimpses you get in the footage it didn't look as bad as the passenger side but I edited my comment based on my experience and living in the NE. My 05 & 06 DRW (180k+ miles ea.) and customers 06 & 07 SRW 90k & 130k miles) all had perfectly fine drivers side spring buckets but all had some rust (not as bad as yours) from the AC drips on the passenger side. None of these trucks were plow trucks. Plow trucks are rust buckets around here. But I'll send you an email anyways and take a look.
I have an 02 7.3 PSD with 529,000 miles on it with all original motor parts. Including original factory injectors and glow plugs!! Still runs like a top. Just chasing an oil leak up top somewhere!

My 2006 F350 is from Michigan and just passed 195,000. I'm having the coil spring buckets replaced next week. The passenger side is roached almost like the one you showed here. Now I can stay up all night thinking about my camshaft. If I'm ever in Georgia I want to stop by and say hi. Thanks for all the info, it's been a huge help.
Wish I had a mechanic like you for my 04 Lightning, been working on a supercar GT 4v Swap. Big 4L twin screw blower can’t find anyone to finish it. Making me wish I had a Powerstroke! But it’s been cool to learn since I haven’t had any other options. Thank you for all the inspiration to work on these Ford trucks!!
having coffee with my girlfriend now, almost did a spit take. thanks for this video bill! I gotta take a look at those spring mounts before I send the truck! whooweee that is bad news.
I've got a January of 2003 f 450 with the 6.0 with a little more than 310000 it came from the Tennessee valley authority I've had it since 2011 I've done the injectors and high pressure oil pump and a few other things but the most important thing that has been done Is service work every 5000 miles oil and filter and fuel filter I do think the head gaskets are starting to show signs of age . service is the key to these trucks lasting
My 6.4 was making the same sound it ended up being the rocket arms but next time it has a problem it’s getting left on the side of the road with the title and keys above the visor
I believe that the roller lifters are a maintenance item. In my option change them at some point or wait and see what happens. I always enjoy watching these videos . They helped me fix my friends truck . As far as the push rod length interesting. .. I like premium lifters and change them.out at some point before they fail.
Do you have an idea what it takes to change the lifters in that engine. You have to pull the engine so you can remove the rear timing cover, just so you can remove the branch tube that prevents the rear lifters from coming out after you remove the high pressure oil pump. Then after you pull the heads can you remove the rear 4 lifters. The front 4 come right out after you remove the heads
I’m at 260k on mine. Engine has been out before. I can tell by the lift hooks. No clue when or why. Runs amazing. Got me nervous tho. Do a “where’s that oil leak” cause I have a few and I can’t tell exactly from where. I know I have valve cover seeping, and looks like a glow plug harness leak, possibly bedplate. Would be nice to see how y’all can just look at them based on where the oil is at and determine a leak position.
Same here. Mine has 195,00 and same kind of leaks you just described. I have some oil in the valley but it looks fairly dry. Def have a d/s valve cover leak and hopefully just a glow plug harness leak. Bottom and sides of engine are covered in oil but it hardly ever drips when I'm parked.
I was told by a international tech to run 10w30 diesel oil in my 6.0. They did that in the buses they serviced and they had a reduction in cam and lifter failures.
Lifter failure took down my 05 6.0 at 188k miles.. Sold the beautiful lariat fx4 4 door for 10k bucks... If I only knew of you guys back in 2012 I would have had my truck fixed.. Sadly there was no one around I could trust to fix it, so I sold it to a local farmer and took the cash and put it down on a new truck..

Of course, like everything else with cars, start your Saturday morning just looking to fix a "small noise", and wrap up the evening with the engine out on the stand to fix something much more cataclysmic.
Are those two white duallys from the tale of two trucks fuel economy video still running around? Would love to see an update video to see what mileage they have racked up
It's all the road salt up here in the northeast that eats steel like candy. It's so hard to pressure wash it all out. You really need a lift to get to all those inaccessible areas. I have an '06 E-350 6.0l. Thankfully there's no rust at all and I hope to keep it that way. I also have an '06 Chrysler Town and Country with 244,000 miles that is a total rust bucket but runs great. Go figure.
That upper spring mount can rust out on any of the trucks with A/C and you won't even know it. East coast salt has nothing to do with it. The condensation is constantly dripping on it from the HVAC box.
there is a very steep exhaust ramp on the oem grind camshaft. and a lifter that wasnt designed for 4 valve pr. cyl. operation.. the 6.4 liter push rod helps but imo the cam and lifters should be replaced on any higher mile motor.
Hey, gotta question for you. My EGR Cooler failed at 81,000 miles, so i pulled Cab did ARP Head Studs and had heads re-surfaced, and had grooves cut for O-Rings, Delete the EGR System, at same time also installed the 6.4 RCD Chromemoly Push Rods, also did Regulated Fuel Return, Airdog ll-4g Lift Pump, along with a KC Stage 2 Turbo, Warren 175/30 injectors, Odawgs s3r Ported Intake Manifold, and also Exhaust and Air Intake Systems. So far I've put about 8,000 miles on everything, and everything A O.K. Also bought Truck Brand New always changed Oil and Filter every 4,000 Miles like Clockwork. Since I've taken so good care of Engine since new and I'm only at 89,000 miles, Should i be worried about Lifter Failure ? Like i said the Shorter 6.4 Push Rods went in at 81,000 miles when the Heads were off. Thanks for your help. Truck is a 2006 Model year.
Do you have this problem with 7.3 or 6.0? I have a 2003 7.3 F250 and I wish to keep this truck another 300,000 miles, I plan to have some work on the motor, and that is why I'm asking.
hey sometimes it really is just driving along in my first 6.4 (yeah ik done laughing) i was cruising abot 65 thought i heard a knocking noise but its faint when driving truck didn't have any cogging like a 6.0 with a dead injector or cylinder but when i came to a stop sign it was bad but still running kinda ok but i checked blow by well about as much as a cracked piston i figured its already f'd might as well get to where i was going had it towed back to the shop turned out the and injector partially held open and melted a piston no i was not towing but it was running h&s tuning of course but it freed itself up to work no heavy white fuel smoke or anything these things seem to have mind of their own sometimes
I watch the show for a few years now you guys do great work all the way from the 732 the six seven it's always interesting though no matter how good Ford Engineers it there's always some wacky Achilles heel everyone's guilty no manufactures perfect man it is weird you think they could engineer that out before it even left the computer

How you doing guys you never thought about doing some Finance to the bulletproof work that you guys doing the trucks because Dad out of work and help for a lot of people including myself l 😆
Ok so now you've got me worried. I've got an 04 6.0 with 251k miles I just deleted it and also did an upgraded oil cooler, brand new turbo, I'm in it already enough with expenses. How much will you guys charge to do this as well as stud it? I know you have to pull the heads anyway so there's the new gaskets.
Also not getting any oil pressure after doing the delete and cooler upgrade. Think it may just be because I'm low on oil? But if I were low on oil wouldn't that cause a no start because if the HPOP.
Moral of the story... 6.0s are a junk motor design and unless you spend a butt load of money, you can't even come close to the reliability of a Cummins. That's why I sold my 6.0 and bought a 6.7 Cummins and now loving life!
