  • Welcome to part 1 of our deck core replacement! Before I start some of the interior modifications, I was checking the structure of the boat. Upon a lot of tapping along the deck and hull, we found that the fiberglass hull was intact but that there was probably a lot of rotting wood in the deck. We decided to cut up the entire top deck and replace the wooden core, and then re-fiberglass it all back together.
On this episode, we cut the fiberglass deck, remove the top layer of fiberglass and rotten wood, sand down the remaining wood and fiberglass two cracks that we found that run along the gunnel.

It looked as though you were leaving most of the old plywood, or was I missing something? Some of it looked pretty tired. Were you tempted to remove all of it?

Looks great guys ... are you also going to remove the sail tracks and check the glass there?

We took a look from underneath and they look in much better shape than the rest of the hardware. Hoping all they need is some new sealant!.

Welcome aboard! :) We just checked out your channel. Do you usually cruise around Toronto? Bella and I are both from there and are looking to put Decision in lake Ontario when the project is done.

Great video, but what university let you to do a deck rehab on campus grounds? My school had my 58 VW microbus towed away for double parking five minutes back in the day!

Is that enough of an edge next to the gunwales to get a flat 12:1 bevel?

The short answer is no. We wanted to get out as much of the old rotten wood as possible so we cut quite close to the gunwales. The top layer of glass is probably 0.5cm thick at most and we were able to achieve 6cm of bevel on the inside but on the outside edge we weren't able to get 12:1 in most places. We added glass at all three layers to make sure it was over built and getting as much surface contact as possible, in some places even up onto the gunwales.
