Pulling the motor out of our Catalina 27 | Electric Conversion
This week, we had Bella's Dad and brother come up to Ottawa to help us pull the old inboard gas motor (Atomic 4) out of our 27 foot Catalina. We took out all of the old wiring, motor and an old gas can (that was surprisingly very full of gas). The motor was a bit tricky to get out- we used 2x4's to make ski's for the motor to sit on while we winched it out.
Now that the old gas motor is out, Matt will be finding a salvage electric motor to refit Decision with.

Painting and cleaning our cheap sailboat (Catalina 27)

Recycling the deck of our sailboat | Fixing our mushy deck (Deck core replacement part 3)

Welcome to our third and final video on deck core replacement. Once the wood core was epoxied in, Matt sanded the wooden core so that with the fiberglass on it, it would be flush (as close to the original shape as possible). Bella sanded the rotten wood off of the underside of the original fiberglass panels. We put the original fiberglass panels back on and sanded everything down. We now have a...
Sailboat Deck Core Replacement | We have to buzz cut Matt's hair (Part 2)

This week we work on cutting the wood core of the deck on our Catalina 27 sailboat and epoxying the core into the inside fiberglass layer. We also have a special guest (thank you Padraigh for helping with measuring and cutting the wood core) and by the end of the episode, Matt needs a buzz cut due to all the resin in his hair. Ripping up the deck on our Catalina 27 | Rotten deck core replacement (Part 1)
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.2 года назад
Welcome to part 1 of our deck core replacement! Before I start some of the interior modifications, I was checking the structure of the boat. Upon a lot of tapping along the deck and hull, we found that the fiberglass hull was intact but that there was probably a lot of rotting wood in the deck. We decided to cut up the entire top deck and replace the wooden core, and then re-fiberglass it all b...
Preparing our Sailboat for Bottom Paint (Antifouling?)
Просмотров 5262 года назад
We are starting to prepare Decision to paint her bottom hull. This week it means that we needed to sand her hull (it took quite a while) and look into what kind of paint we needed to get. Matt specifically has been looking at ablative paints and their impact on the environment, and what solutions there may be. Want to get more updates on the project? Follow our Instagram account: ...
Buying a cheap sailboat for $1000 | Transporting it to Ottawa

When I was looking for a sailboat that was headed to the junkyard for my thesis, Decision stood out as a boat with a good hull, but also needed a lot of love and work to repair her. Hi Matt! I'm excited to see your project move forward. I'm a sailor, sailing a 1985 Catalina 27 tall rig. If you have any questions for me, I'd be happy to try to help. But I wanted to say that the Catalina 27 is a great boat and sails wonderfully... a fun aim to shoot for! I'm excited to see what you come up with for an electric motor. If you do it right, it could be a great boat for a long time.

    It is amazing that you are allow to do all this heavy work on the campus. Your barrier coat job is probably overkill, these old boat are not prone to osmosis, but it is all done now. It is too late now, but it would have been a good idea to protect the exposed epoxy on the deck from UV damage until finishing paint is apply. I am curious to see if the biocide free paint will do the job. I use VC-17 on my sailboat ( a low copper content vs ablative paint ) and it is OK for the 'cold' water of Saint-Laurence river. Keep posting.

    It's called a "refit" and it's the begining of a very poor, financial decision. You will learn a lot but you will pay for every lesson (in spades.) Most things you will do wrong before you do right. A 27 foot boat is too small for two people for any extended cruising and will cost nearly as much to restore as any 40 footer. It's also too small for any marina, live-aboard status. I put $15,000 into a $1000 27' sailboat (15 years ago) and sold it for a whopping $ 3000 after only 4 years. I was lucky to get that. If you really want a boat, go buy the newest one you can afford. It's always a buyers market.

    • @sailingdecision8597
      @sailingdecision8597 2 года назад

      Thanks James! The project is all about learning these lessons and keeping the value that is in the materials that we have. Less about making good financial decisions and more learning about material life cycles, recyclability, and repairability in design!

    Looks amazing! Just wondering if the paint you used was an epoxy based paint, also redoing my bottom, but the previous owner says it has no barrier coat under the ablative… Ive never seen this so curious if you guy are using a barrier coat. Good you guys waited on painting the bottom ablative, you are better to wait and do it just before you put your boat back in the water, this will help it maintain a longer life for the bottom paint with less growth!

    • @sailingdecision8597
      @sailingdecision8597 2 года назад

      We used an epoxy primer and will be using a non-ablative and biocide-free alternative for bottom paint when the weather gets warmer. The product we are looking at is called VC Performance epoxy from Interlux. It is essentially a hard slick surface that sea life will have trouble clinging to. We will likely have more scrubbing to do but we are going to give it a shot!

  • @MattO109
    @MattO109 2 года назад

    Will be redoing parts of my deck not as extensive as this, I will be doing it slightly different, a coat wet epoxy then some thickened epoxy followed by balsa blocks to fill the void while still uncured, then thickened epoxy over to make the entire area making sure to fill any remaining voids and then the recycled top fiberglass, and sealing the edges with epoxy and some woven fiberglass! Great video and the deck looks good and sturdy! Cant wait to see what you guys do with the non-skid as that is a similar concern of of mine.

    • @sailingdecision8597
      @sailingdecision8597 2 года назад

      We were going for cheap and simple with the pine core. In hindsight probably cutting into smaller blocks would have made it more manageable and the only real difference was that we did the wetting out, and thickened epoxy in one shot and the second coat of thickened epoxy and recycled deck material in a second shot. This saved us some time but it was a shortcut and a lot of coordination to time everything properly!

    Is that enough of an edge next to the gunwales to get a flat 12:1 bevel?

    • @sailingdecision8597
      @sailingdecision8597 2 года назад

      The short answer is no. We wanted to get out as much of the old rotten wood as possible so we cut quite close to the gunwales. The top layer of glass is probably 0.5cm thick at most and we were able to achieve 6cm of bevel on the inside but on the outside edge we weren't able to get 12:1 in most places. We added glass at all three layers to make sure it was over built and getting as much surface contact as possible, in some places even up onto the gunwales.
