MASSIVE FIRE at Building Under Construction - Brandon, MB

- At around 8:15am on February 17th, 2022 Brandon Firefighter Paramedics and Brandon Police Service responded to a structure fire in the 4100 block of Victoria Avenue in Brandon. The building, which was a 4 story apartment building under construction, had heavy smoke and fire showing from the upper floors upon arrival of emergency crews.
Flames could be seen pushing hard out of the 4th floor and roof. Billowing black and gray smoke could be seen city-wide against the crystal clear blue skies.
Brandon Fire set up their Quint ladder truck on Victoria Avenue and started master stream operations with their ladder pipe. 15 Pump was positioned on 42nd Street between the building on fire and the occupied apartments to the south. Luckily the wind was calm and pushing slowly to the north which moved the smoke, heat and embers away from the occupied apartments.
A Blitz Fire monitor and a 2 1/2" handline were pulled from 15 Pump to attack the flames from the south side while Quint continued master stream ops on the north side.
The fire progressed rapidly and aggressively due to the the combustible materials and the building being under construction. The majority of the structure collapsed within 30-45 minutes of fire crews arriving. As of now the majority of the fire is knocked down, however I assume that fire crews will remain on scene throughout the day and into the night. The pile will likely be smoldering for some time. Thankfully no reports of injuries so far.

How many alarms was this major fire?
@@rosewetzel8284 Brandon's fire/EMS service is not large enough to have alarms. Basically when any fire happens every on-duty member is sent to the call along with the majority of the city's apparatus. Brandon's version of striking multiple alarms would be calling in off-duty members on overtime, and the very rare occasional use of mutual aid. Although in my opinion I believe they could use mutual aid more often than they actually utilize it.
Well maybe you could film an 11th alarm fire in the near future etc
Just SUBSCRIBED!!👍👍 KEEP IT UP GREAT VIDEOS, BUT MOST OF ALL BE SAFE AROUND AROUND THE CHAOS!!!👍💪🤘🙏
@@williamreilly6091 Much appreciated William, cheers!
Dude! You might not film a lot of fires but you have some of if not the best fire videos on RUclips, incredible.
That's much appreciated coming from you Mark, thank you very much. Sometimes its hard when you're trying to shoot photo and video to get a good amount/quality of both, but I feel like yesterday turned out pretty good for content. Thanks again man, very nice of you to say that. Cheers!
Why do you think that? No offense to that camera op. But all I see here is 99% shots of a smoke column. `
@@Nash1a You have poor analytical skills.
That is definitely some of the coolest smoke I’ve seen on video, great job getting that
Me too, the extreme cold made for some very interesting smoke conditions. Thanks for the kind words!
aside from the destruction, this was quite a blend of different smoke and patterns making it an amazing capture.
Very very interesting and dynamic smoke conditions for this fire. The column reached SO high into the sky. I guess bitterly cold temps do that!
I guess they are not going to take any more lease requests now?
White is steam, brown is wood and ordinary combustibles, black is plastics, rubber, or roofing.
Thank you for sharing. It's terrifying that these "modern" apartment buildings burn like a bundle of matchsticks!
They burn that fast due to all of the exposed wood. Most likely there is little or no drywall installed, so it's just a lot of exposed wood. Drywall is fire resistant, so once it's installed on the walls and ceiling the building would burn a lot slower. I think 3 layers of 5/8" drywall gives a 2 or 3 hour fire rating.
My pleasure Laura thanks for viewing. Definitely scary/interesting to see how fast some buildings can go up.
There building these all over the city of st.paul Minnesota we probly have 20 new 4 story Apts. Here and I always wonder what they would look like on fire now I know. 8 minutes on the ground.
@@bradr1913 Yup, worrying. In reality it was about 30-45 mins from when Brandon Fire got there to when it was on the ground, but still fast.
modern american, burns well
Amazing video! This is the perfect fire to catch! Fully involved, perfectly filmed and nobody got hurt. Perfect man!
My thoughts exactly, AND no tenants in there yet so no personal items destroyed. Of course except for the worker's tools and equipment, but thankful nobody got hurt. Thanks a lot man!
Wow, that *was* a massive fire! Great footage, especially the billowing smoke clouds and the partial collapse. I bet you could feel the heat coming off that thing!
I absolutely could when I was closer in that parking lot, which was actually nice because it was well below -30°C at the time and I was FREEZING. Literally warmed me up lol. The smoke was sooo intense and picturesque, haven't been to many fires with that type of smoke behaviour before. Thanks a lot Lucas!
"Now Leasing." Apply if you like a VERY large fireplace.
Massive inferno. Glad no one was injured. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for viewing! Very glad nobody was injured.
This footage is outstanding! Amazing job
I was happy with how it turned out for sure. Much appreciated for your kind words, cheers!
Now Leasing? I think the leases just got cancelled. 😂
Wow. I loved this filming. Beginning middle and end all in one and not dragged out or cut apart, this showed it all. I bet that sucker was hot and you could feel it from where you were. Looks like it even warped that chain link fence. Incredible!
Thank you very much Tad. I film and take photos of fires, so sometimes it's hard to get a good amount/quality of both. I feel like the content I got at this fire was pretty good. And yeah it was HOT close up. Surprisingly it was actually a nice hot though, it was well below -30 celsius with wind and I was freezing lol. Thanks again for your kind words!
@@LiamPattisonPhotography well hey I like watching things burn so I’ll subscribe to see your future work too. If your content is anything like this I’m sure I’ll love it. And judging by the comment section I’m not the only one who liked it. And at -30 this fire probably made the air feel like the perfect summer morning. Cheers my friend! 🤙
@@MintMonte87ACSS312 The heat was for sure a welcome addition lol. Thanks a lot for subscribing and cheers to you too!
Bet they're not leasing anymore... Great shots as always, Liam
Yeah I'd say those plans have been set back a bit, thanks a lot for your comment!
Verry great video , thanks
Thank you for watching!
Absolutely love the videos. Brandon sure has a lot of fires lately. Grew up there and can't remember that many.
Yeah they've had a couple of big ones in recent years. Thanks for watching!
Just more proof that lightweight trussed construction might as well have "Good tinder." stamped on it. It says a lot when a new LWT home burns to the foundation faster than a 20 year-old double wide trailer.
It is very eye opening and scary to see how fast these places can go up, and how abundant they are around.
Nice video work capturing "THE BEAST" doing its work of DESTRUCTION!!😱👍💪🤘
Thank you William, it was a big one. Glad it wasn't occupied yet.
And that, kids, is how parking lots are made.
Great photography!
No kidding, hopefully they're able to rebuild. Thanks for the kind words!
I would say this new apartment complex had an excellent heating system, even if it was, by definition, rather self-limiting.
Might be a liiiiiittle too warm for me lol.
nice catch liam. a bldg can be replaced ,lives cant. ive never seen a automatic hosing device moving like a fan before
Pretty neat hey? That’s the “blitz fire nozzle”. Great addition to free up a set of hands at big fires like these. Thanks for watching!
Four months of construction and twenty minutes to burn to the ground. Amazing!
Now that’s a fire!! Great video!!
Thanks a lot Jim, it sure was. Glad nobody was hurt.
Excellent job of covering this fire. Great camera work!
Much appreciated Betty, thank you very much!
You guys had no chance that building was lost five minutes after the call was put in as long as no one was hurt stay safe 👍👨🏻🏭🇬🇧
Really? There was a ladder spraying water @ :30 sec. in. Then, the firefighting stops and the building burns down. Then we see more water being used.? Oh well.
@@davidsimpkins8639 With 10 guys and 2 trucks with long hydrant lays in -38 weather what do you expect? Not their fault. The building was gone as they were arriving. Nothing you can do in those situations.
woah, what a fire! awesome footage liam!
It was a biiiig one, thanks for watching man!
Good footage Liam keep’em coming p/s that was a ripper glad no one was hurt
Super fortunate it was not occupied yet. Thanks a lot Michael! Cheers
In Britain I've recently known of several newly built blocks of flats wrecked by fire. The rules on building materials for flats seem to be much less strict than those for houses. As nobody has yet died, people don't seem bothered, despite the occupants losing everything they have.
Just wait till after all the luxury buildings are being built and they finally start doing stuff for affordable housing then see what that stuff's going to be made out of
I don t know about that Crazy Leyland 510
@@joeyork9891 Sure seems strange to me An unfinished structure up in massive flames
@@robertmoir5695
Yes I would have too agree.
I'm in construction for nearly 15 years now.
Any time you have torch, welding, grinding
Fuel feed Heaters you need a fire watchers for each. This fire looks like it had plenty of conbustables hopefully not contributed to poor work site clean up.
All area should be cleared out before working hot. And no storing of and time of fuels nor garage that is conbustable
Everything where I live is using light weight construction . It lights up like a match
Great capture, thank you. At that stage, it's almost a waste of water.
Thanks much for viewing! Almost, yup.
My sentiments also a waste of water that puppy was toast, just maintain it so it won't spread to other structures.
Might as well let it burn on up..less to clean up..good work and no injuries...
A very large apartment complex consisting of just the wood framing caught fire (arson) in Norfolk, Va. in 1966. We were 1/4 mile away and had to move back due to the extreme radiant heat from the fire. The heat was unreal !
She must've been cooking!! This one was producing some crazy heat too, but it was not as intense because it was freezing out.
Great video Liam! That was fully involved
It sure was. Very hard to stop a fire like that, even if you have large amounts of resources. Thanks for watching!
Great fire video glad it wasn’t occupied
My thoughts exactly, thanks for watching!
Liam! Wow what a fire! I'd hate to live in a building that would go up so fast. Excellent job
It was crazy, very glad it wasn't occupied. Thanks for your kind words and for viewing!
Mükemmel 😍✋🇹🇷
You'r Videos R. Amazing
Spectacular blaze!!!!!!!!
The Rivermark condo fire in Santa Clara, California was quite the inferno as well...
Not much firefighters can do when wooden structures start rolling like this. Hope to contain from spreading, and maybe roast some marshmallows. Thanks for sharing
You bet. Protect exposures, do what you can with the equipment and resources you have. No sense in getting hurt to save an already toast building.
@@LiamPattisonPhotography Not a bad suggestion next time there's a big fire like this one, to bring a bag of marshmallows and a couple of VERY long sticks to roast them on. Goes well with a thermos jug of hot chocolate! What a shame to see that missed marshmallow opportunity literally go up in smoke!
The one ladder truck is doing all the work
The Quint was operating their master stream while 15 Pump had two 2 1/2" lines in service. Unfortunately that's all the trucks Brandon has at the moment, as 14 Pump is OOS due to being crashed into.
Brandon Professional Firefighters Association has never lost a foundation
Can't even imagine the intense heat that fire is giving off
It was a lot of heat. It was also below -38 celsius at the time so it actually warmed me up a little bit where I was standing lol.
Боевки чистые ,автоматический лафетный ствол это круто удачи вам !
Holy crap! That’s massive 😮
It was insane. So lucky nobody was injured.
@@LiamPattisonPhotography yeah
Wow that's some unbelievable fires there and never even heard about it either.. Here in Winnipeg we've had some wicked fires over the winter season too.. Nice job recording the 2 fire's..
Much appreciated Lenny, thank you. Yeah Brandon's had a few big ones in recent years. Winnipeg seems to get their fair share of big ones too. Always seem to happen on the coldest days too.
Your welcome. Sure do and not easy either in the cold. Went by 2 bad ones and holy crap the frozen water was unbelievable too.
That made some incredible smoke plumes. Nice camera and well done!
It sure was visible and vibrant on that extremely cold day, thanks a lot for your comment!
Well- the good news is. The building wasn't a total loss🤔
Great video👍👍
With the price of lumber that is expensive.
Brandon has been crazy with fires the past few years
Brandon has definitely had a number of "historic" fires in recent years.
I assume the sprinkler system hadn't been installed yet. KIDDING!!!
really on fire in Brandon, Lesco Brandon!
EXCELLENT reporting
Thank you very much John, I really appreciate it!
Very nice video Liam.
Many thanks for watching! Cheers
Wow. Not only fire to fight but snow too! Good job 👏 👍 to NYFD
This is Brandon, Manitoba. Not New York.
Crazy and great footage
Thanks much, it was wild!
Pretty sure the ISS station in space could see that fire and smoke plume. Like a huge camp fire, that all wood structure could not be saved even with a couple hundred men and charged hoses. Great video under the circumstances.
I bet they could've if they were looking, and you're right almost nothing anyone could do. Thanks very much for watching!
We can’t catch a break brandon loves having fires apparently
And thus why I would never live in an apartment unless each unit had a sprinkler system. Nothing but tinder boxes and all that glue in the sheets of plywood make great fuel.
Even that doesn't always help. We had an 18 unit condo burn to the ground here. There were sprinklers in every unit, but the fire started on a deck and spread up to the attic, which apparently had no fire walls, or had really shitty ones. I think it had cedar shingles too, and likely not treated to fire resistance for years. The cause is thought to be untended smoking materials. The fire inspector in that county obviously sucks. There is a restaurant near where the condos are that has at least 2 fire code violations. I'm sure every FF thats gone in there has seen it, some likely reported it, still there. 1 is an in/out door swinging wrong way, the other is an exit that has a table against it. That place makes me think of the Station fire in RI.
Location?
Keep building those mid-rises from plywood instead of steel and masonry , and you'll keep seeing this.
This is great footage and an impressive fire. It does make me wonder though why houses in that region of the world continue to be built out of wood… wouldn‘t it be smart to switch construction to the use of non-combustable materials?
M O N E Y ;)
I believe money is a big reason. Probably quicker to build a wood frame building than a concrete or brick building. Time = money I guess. Definitely worrying seeing how frequent and abundant these multi-story wood frame construction buildings there are around. Thanks for the kind words Christian!
Concreate places. Can have fires i seen one bust up.flames. u still have stuff that burst in flames buildings dont always
Brutalist architecture is no longer in fashion and most city planning departments would probably turn it down as it's considered ugly.
Well we need 10 more sticks here, at least the one was backed way off the collapse zone. 3:45 we need 20 sticks here. Bad snow issues but where was everyone. It is what it is. Don't put the fire out it is cold here we need to stay warm. J/K
was the build sprayed with foam insulation went up very quickly to we just leave it to burn if it has to spray foam insulation keep the other house from going up some time were not that lucky and exit house does go up with the first one build the to close together
? Very hard to read with no punctuation, not sure what you're saying.
Kudos to the FD for saving the basement.
Not much you can do with a well involved apartment fire under construction with 2 pumper trucks. Not many fire departments could have stopped that.
In my old department.......this would have been a " Better call Leroy 📞......he ain't seen nothing like this.."
Cold dry air has the most oxygen per unit volume of any air type. This fire was basically running with an intercooler.
I am wondering what was the cause of this fire
Me too. Will be interesting if they find out a cause.
I'm sure it will be deemed "Undetermined"
My guess there were major cost overruns so they torched it..
Now that's a Blaze!...
There sure seems to be a lot of "under construction" fires lately! Anyone else curious about that?
During construction there is absolutely no fire protection whatsoever! Typically it’s before drywall and fire rated walls are in place. Sprinkler system is far from being in service! It just takes a roofers torch, plumber, grinder overloaded extension cords to get it started, then it’s off to the races.
You have a good eye for camera work.
Well done.
Much appreciated for the kind words, thank you!
this is crazy
Great footage
Thanks for the kind words Julie!
OMG I was standing so close to the fire that a it felt so hot jeez luoize
nice video
Thanks for watching!
Did it burn up, or burn down?
Appeared to have started on the 4th floor/roof area. Portions of the building started to collapse which brought fresh fire to all floors of the building. Appeared to burn both up and down.
HOLY HOGWARTS! Hope everyone was ok!
No injuries, thank goodness.

@@frederickjunctionproductio9752 Very much appreciated, thank you!
@@LiamPattisonPhotography your welcome 🙂
The amount of smoke and flame coming out of this fire is immense. It really looks like an oil tank burning instead of a wooden structure.
OSB is loaded with glue.
There is kinda too much fires in Brandon recently 😳
No way another one! 😳
Well at least they won't have to worry about demolishing the building.... there is nothing left ......
And dats dat...Dere wuz nuttin we could do...
When your ladders only go up so high. This is were you need choppers to drop water on the top
Was this mainly a wood structure?
Yes. After it was burned down it appeared there was a central steel support beam on the ground floor but that was it. Purely wood frame construction.
Holy hell !!
What do you say about a thing like that ?
I'm not sure I understand your question?
What’s the reason of putting water on it when it’s obviously not going to put it out at this stage?
To attempt to put it out/contain it the best they can. If the wind would have shifted the exposures would've been at risk.
For a smaller city, Brandon sure has some huge fires.
They sure do. Been a few “historic” fires in recent years. Disappointing to see an under-staffed fire department trying to put these things out. It’s hard when you simply don’t have the proper resources.
question is what was in this building to make it burn to the ground so fast?
Wood, OSB plywood, worker's equipment, likely fuels, electrical work, window frames, literally anything and everything. Multi-story wood frame construction buildings are like matches.
Wood and oxygen. Creates lots of heat. That's all it needed.
Thank goodness that construction was not occupied yet. Obviously it was a death trap that should never have been built. Presumably the local planning authority will prevent it being rebuilt with that material and all of the architect's previous designs should be inspected to prevent a recurrence somewhere else and the architect put out of business.
Very fortunate that they weren't occupied. Will be interesting to see if any changes come of this, I wouldn't be surprised if nothing changed unfortunately.
Another quality new build using cheap materials.
You need two more towel ladder trucks
It's a city of 51,000 people with two stations. Where do you figure they put two additional ladders?
As grey man said. Sure it would be sweet to have more aerials, but I believe the outcome would've been the same. Hydrants were limited in that area so wouldn't have even been enough to supply two additional aerials.
One would think, with all that fire, all that radiant heat, there won't be any snow remaining within 100' of the bldg
Not really how structure fires work.
I'd bet a propane grasshopper was too close to combustibles.....
In the beginning, the ladders were too short or the fire too high.
Later the ladders seemed to get bigger or the fire went down. Be that as it may, the water seemed too dry. The fire brigade did its best but no water was washed up against it. It evaporated into steam in the fire.
What. Water to dry!
Someone asks me, “What. Water to dry!” So here,s my answer.
Yes, you can have dry water. Then it's ice. A kind of instant water powder. But you can't spray it because it isn't liquid yet. You need a big fire to melt it. But then it turns to steam. It sounds a bit strange, but I hope you understand. If not, I blame the translation computer. In Germany this is called “verstehen sie spaß” and in English that means something like, Do you like Humor.
It was a wood-frame construction building, and it was currently under-construction meaning it wasn't finished yet.
Insurance job?
Brandon can't catch a break. They've lost a lot of buildings to fire.
Also, was that a tornado siren that I spotted on a pole?
No kidding. And can you time stamp where the siren is? Brandon has "Emergency Alert Sirens" stationed around the city which can alert to bad weather and other hazardous situations.
"Now Leasing" .... Ummmm ..... Maybe it should read "Fire Sale?" In all seriousness though, it must be heartbreaking for the owner, contractor, as well as the men building this to watch. All the hard, sophisticated work that went into it, only to watch it burn to the ground .....
Definitely devastating for the people working on it and people who had planned to move into it. Glad nobody was living in it yet!
Where is MB?
It's the Canadian province between Saskatchewan and Ontario. Its above the two US states of North Dakota and Minnesota.
MB stands for Manitoba, Canada.
1 stick flowing on that is like pissing on a wild fire in California
Unfortunately it's all they got, work with what you've got.
The FDNY, with all of its resources, would have a hard time getting that blaze under control.
Buildings being renovated are inherently a fire hazard. Once they get going, they are almost unstoppable.
Agreed. You could dump multiple pumpers on this fire and would've been difficult to put this out. And of course Brandon doesn't have those unlimited resources like other cities do.
after this fire started, there's no putting it out, so stand back and let it burn itself out.
Especially with limited resources... not much you can do.
