Massive Explosive Fire Consumes 100 Year Old Building | Downtown Los Angeles

- 6.8.2021 | 1:50 AM | LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Firefighters Tuesday were working to extinguish a major emergency fire in a three-story commercial building in downtown Los Angeles that was punctuated by a number of explosions apparently involving "pressurized gas cylinders," authorities said.
The fire was reported about 1:50 a.m. to the 200 block of East Third Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Video from the scene showed flames coming out of one side of the building and what sounded like several small, firecracker-like explosions along with thick, black smoke pouring out of another side of the structure. Flames appeared to spread to debris across the street from the building, the video showed.
Firefighters went into a defensive mode, pouring water on the outside of the building to prevent the flames from spreading to other structures.
"When we arrived on scene, we ... quickly were able to see there was evidence of an explosion -- rolling steel doors that were pushed outward, canisters that were being strewn across the streets, going city blocks," LAFD Capt. Erik Scott told Fox11.
The canisters were butane cartridges, according to Fox11.
A total of 150 firefighters were sent to scene -- an effort that was continuing about six hours afterward. Traffic was routed away from the area as a precaution.
No injuries were reported and no evacuations were ordered.
"From a peak of 150 Firefighters assigned to this major emergency fire during the night, 78 are still on scene, continuing their defensive posture with hose lines to fully extinguish stubborn flames that remain within the century-old 23,790 square-foot, 3-story masonry building that housed five businesses, including two that are believed to have sold 'smoking supplies' on the ground level, with two floors of commercial storage above," Brian Humphrey of the LAFD said in a statement shortly before 8 a.m.
"When firefighters arrived, there was heavy fire visible and a cacophony of small explosions, with a large number of pressurized gas cylinders littering the street," Humphrey said. "Though no firefighters or civilian were injured by those canisters, or in the ensuing fire, flames from the involved building and/or canisters appear to have ignited tents and debris in a homeless encampment across the street, as well as spread within the structure to involve all three floor of the fire building, ultimately burning through the roof," Humphrey said.
"Neither the structure nor tenants of a modern 6-story retirement apartment community separated by an alley to the east, sustained any injury or direct impact from the fire, and were allowed to remain in their homes," Humphrey said.
"The fire was also prevented from spreading to an immediately adjacent unoccupied 5-story center-hallway apartment building to the north, that was undergoing renovation," Humphrey said. "Firefighters expect to remain at the scene through the day. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation."
Scott said the fire was similar to the commercial building fire on May 16, 2020, at 327 E. Boyd St. in the downtown Los Angeles area that left a dozen firefighters injured from an explosion.

It's the same old same old. First they report there is a fire. Then they say some homeless encampment tents were destroyed... And then weeks later, on a fourth-page article, they finally mention that it was a homeless fire that actually started the blaze. But they don't say that too loudly because it would challenge their agenda.

I agree 120%. I watch so many videos where the firefighters have their heads up their ass. These firefighters are well trained and experienced unlike so many that I have seen.
The ultimate responsibility comes under the chief and his officers. It is there responsibility to train the firefighters.
It's a shame that a building that old was lose to a fire. I am glad no one was hurt.

One hell of a fire this one. Incredible that there were no fatalities or even injuries. Those firefighters did an incredible job in the face of a true disaster. This could have gone sideways very quickly and in many ways. Fantastic job here. Real professional work.

@@tomwilliam5118 that's not true because whatever is stored can give off heat and fumes, especially if whatever is stored is stored in warm, tight spaces. For example, oil or gasoline soaked rags cannot be stored in a pile in a corner somewhere in a warm area or near any heat source. The news reports have been saying it's possible that acetylene tanks are the cause of this fire. Acetylene tanks are flammable once they ignite, so like I said, at around 2 a.m. when this fire started, there more than likely was nobody in the smoke shop, so that would mean those tanks caught fire due to NEGLIGENCE in how they were stored. They were probably stored near a heat source, there are many possibilities as to how this fire started. There probably was somebody in the smoke shop that accidentally did something, but the bottom line is these acetylene tanks have a lot to do with the start of this fire, and once again, like the Boyd St. fire that happened last year that scorched Pierce truck 9, a stupid ass smoke shop was the cause. Smh

The down side to America’s legalizing weed and the processing of it is the cheap butane cans from China. They are known to rupture without someone setting fire to them. Also the way they are stored are typically stacked far too high and stacks will fall and then rupture cans. Both issues are common causes of smoke shop supply companies.
I was down there this afternoon and LA street was still blocked and the ladder truck was still there with hoses all over the street. Of course the complimentary street urine stench survived the fire. Damn!

To think that this is also science applied to the firefighting job. Less than a 100 years ago entire towns were consumed by a single house fire. Today's construction materials and all the equipment firefighter's have at their dispose, made a massive, dangerous fire like this, be contained and extinguished in matter of hours without spreading out and zero human loss or injuries in the process. Trained professionals dedicated to the only task of keeping the beast at line. Amazing job, LAFD. Amazing job firefighter's everywhere. Amazing modern world we're living in.

Vape shops house butane canisters. If not stored properly, they can cause explosions and fires.
There was a similar fire a couple blocks from this one a year or two ago.
If the city is unable to monitor the safety practices of those shops, they should be shut down.

The "trash' on the sidewalk is homeless encampments. That's Skid Row...the sidewalks are full of trash, cardboard boxes, wooden pallets etc.
The fire probably jumped across the street because of the exploding butane canisters.

I'm sorry. I was wrong. Many homeless were hard working people and just fell on hard times. I have friends on the street and they built things.
I think it's frustration with the take over of public spaces,the increasing size of each camp, the cost of cleaning up and the number of fires.
As we get into summer we might not be able to stop the fires. Colorado river is running low along with most reservoirs.
A few months after this video was first posted, a really massive cannabis and whippet shop fire near Skid Row had a particularly massive explosion where 8 fire fighters barely escaped with their lives and engulfed an entire city street it was so bad. Thank goodness no one died despite the sheer scale and violence of the fire. The fire highers had no idea the death trap they walked on.
I hope 🤞 that nobody got hurt or killed or injured 🤕 during the building fire 🔥 dude.

Left LA for good on April 23rd after I retired from the railroad, but in the months before I left we had multiple fires set by homeless people around our yard and in the LA river near our yard. They crazies are going to burn everything down. 54% of the fires that LA City responds to now are set by the homeless.
As horrible as it sounds a lot of times they do this stuff to get put into jail. You gotta think they have heat and we’ll sort of a bed and a meal for sure everyday.
