Massive 3rd Alarm Fire Rips Through 5 Story Building in East LA

- 09.16.20 | 1:00 AM | EAST LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A fire heavily damaged a five-story affordable housing complex under construction in East Los Angeles Wednesday, along with a historic theater building and a house, and a "person of interest" was detained in connection with the investigation.
About 150 firefighters responded to the area of Rowan Avenue and First Street at about 1 a.m. and encountered heavy fire coming from the 62-unit complex, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The building, which was called "Nuevo Amanecer" and had been under construction for 18 months, was going to house low-income veterans and families, according to Manuel Bernal, president of East LA Community Corporation, a nonprofit group that planned and managed it. It was scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.
The fire, which forced the evacuation of nearby residents, also damaged a historic pre-1933 theater building and a single-story house, but no injuries were reported.
"Not only does this tragedy profoundly affect our timeline to provide quality housing to veterans and families, but the families living next door were also impacted by the fire and local workers have lost their construction jobs," Bernal said in a statement. "No one was injured, but Nuevo Amanecer was a valuable economic resource in East LA and we are overcome with grief for the loss of our neighbors' homes and livelihoods. We are currently looking into ways to support the families as we recover together."
A teenage boy was detained for questioning as a "person of interest" in connection with the fire investigation, according to the county fire department.
"We are cooperating with the local authorities and the Red Cross, and have sadly been informed by the sheriff's department that an arson suspect is in custody," Bernal said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's East Los Angeles Station could not confirm if the person of interest or any other suspects had been arrested.
The blaze was largely extinguished by daybreak, but firefighters were still sifting through rubble hours later to determine if there were any smoldering embers. An official knockdown time was listed as 9:31 a.m. A drone was deployed to help firefighters inspect the site.

If this teenager is found guilty of this crime he owes an enormous, enormous debt to society to do something so stupid, so costly and especially to people truly in need of help from others. This is an inexcusable act that heavy, heavy consequences need to be assessed to the offender. Basically an unconscionable act. Unacceptable in a modern society.

Even worse, the victim property gets punished again. Their property insurance is now null and void. It's common for insurance companies to get cold feet when arson is suspected.

I can't help but wonder if this affodable housing project couldn't have been constructed of more fireproof material? Imagine if people were living in it.
when you get to close up on any big build you have heaters curing mudding and drywall.. that's the time to have walk around inside inspection all night. before doors and windows are in fire danger is minimal. also contractors leave flammable material and heaters on. we lose apts. and condos very high end from this lack of oversight. it has "de nada" to do with "affordable housing'.

I live in East LA and they are building 5 like these around the area. Some are still under construction like this one on Rowand and 3rd Street (East LA). The other one still under construction in Marengo and Soto st. (Boyle Heights)
When buildings like this get to close up I'd suggest 24 hour walk around security. As heaters are on for drying drywall and mudding before painting, your fire danger ramps up huge once the windows and doors are installed. WE lose apts. like this all the time, and it is always "near completion". The cost to have night monitoring is pennies compared to what the community loses.

There must be some mistake about the ‘person of interest’. The report says that the person was a juvenile and also that this was an early morning fire. School is back in session now and juveniles are supposed to be at home in bed - well past their bedtimes.

Hopefully everyone will be safe out there and. I was a volunteer fireman for St.helens Oregon for seventeen years and I been on big fires but not that big. The biggest fire I been on is a big grass fire they sent us to over in eastern Oregon.

Ive worked with multiple firefighters at my jobs, they all told me the same thing. Radiant heat can set the buildings next to it on fire.

Recovering Soul We can speculate on motive here but home owners hate low income housing. It causes crowding and lowers property values in the neighborhood if they live there. Really sad how selfish and greedy people are but that’s reality.
