  • Welcome back to our road trip around the Wild West of America. We trying to do the same trip that my great grandparents did 47 years ago in their Oldsmobile station wagon in 1976. So we went out and bought a 92 Olds wagon for $2700 dollars and we are attempting to drive it 7000 miles around the US. In this episode we are going to see some amazing sites like the Roswell New Mexico UFO Festival, The Worlds Largest Pistachio, The White Sand Desert, Tombstone Arizona, Goldfield Ghost Town, Montezuma Castle Indian Cliff Dwellings, Meteor Crater, The Petrified forest, Old Route 66, and Williams Arizona. Can we make it without breaking down like last year? Lets find out.

This brought back so many memories. I'm 58, and in July & August 1976, my grandfather took me and my cousin on a trip out there in a 1970 Ford econoline van. The van was set up with seats in the back that converted to twin beds, and there was a hammock that suspended across the front seats. No air conditioning, 3 speed on the column. We were gone for 5 weeks and camped every night in a different city except for the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. We spent 2 nights in both places. Believe me, your kids will remember this trip for the rest of their lives!

I can't believe you guys only paid $2700 for it. My wife and I have family that live on a small horse ranch not far from the Worlds Largest Pistachio you all saw. They live near the small town of Tularosa (which you may have driven through). 1:45:44 josh, that low coolant light is caused by the sensor going bad. Om the radiator about 2-3 inches below the cap is a small black box with 2 or 3 wires coming out. You fan unplug it and the light will stay off. How it works is there are 2 contacts inside, and when they are covered by coolant the switch is open and the light is off. If its gets uncovered by low coolant then it closes and turns on the light. Usually scale builds up on it, throwing it off.

As the family drive by all those abandoned sheds, houses, barns, motels, gas stations I try to imagine the people's dreams when they first bought the land and built those structures. Whomever they were they worked very hard, invested every dime they had in a quest to fulfill a dream. They tried,, they really tried but whatever of lifes hardships caused them to pack up and leave, to abandon their dreams and move on to who knows where to try and survive with what little they had left. Did they try again somewhere else? I like to think because they all are or were brave and adventurous some did achieve their dream. Many just gave up and disappeared into the distance never to be heard from again.

My husband and I are seniors (84 and79) watch all your videos and enjoy all of them. We really like your family videos that show all of your family loving a real family trip. The kids are NOT ON CELL PHONES……..that is refreshing! They are really kids and seems to get along well. Making special memories will live with them forever and will pass it along to their future children. It’s sooooo good to see!
Can’t wait for the Grand Canyon video because we have never been there and we would like to visit the Canyon through your family’s eyes.
So keep up the great work!
We are watching for the next video👍Thank you The Schades

Don’t forget to check the air pressure in your tires first thing in the morning. FYI, Costco has free air (nitrogen) stations that are open when the gas station is open. Don’t have to be a member to use the air pumps.

Thanks for showing us some neat attractions out west. When you drove into the Wigwam Motel, it was like revisiting the movie "Cars". I was looking for Lightning McQueen.😊 The sign you saw for fry bread is most likely a Native American tradition. I knew a guy that was a missionary to the Navajo Tribe in the 1960's and 1970's in New Mexico. He said one of the best things you could ever eat was their Indian fry bread. It was cooked in a cast iron skillet with animal lard. There was only one kind of lard he said you didn't want to have it cooked in and that would be mutton grease. The Navajo really like mutton and he said they liked to have their sheep old. For those who don't know, the older a sheep is, their meat gets a very strong odor. That's why most people eat lamb and never see sheep or mutton at the store. My friend said people who aren't used to mutton can get very sick to the stomach. That actually happened to him once. He had moved away from the New Mexico reservation at some time and happened to be passing thru the reservation along I-40 while travelling. He stopped at an elderly Navajo widow's place to visit and have fry bread. He said her's was the best and it was best fried in bacon grease. Much to his dismay, she fried it in mutton grease and he ended up sick to his stomach all the way back to his home in Southeast Oklahoma.

Love the trip video Josh, felt so sorry for Wawa. You could tell that she was so uncomfortable that she was about to cry. Can relate for sure. Can you imagine the sky at night without any light infiltrating the area? To say that Josh was excited at Tombstone would be a total understatement? LOL, Tosh has her hands full with 4 kids she is traveling with. Awesome video shots Josh, thanks for taking us along. Be safe!

Trees dont grow out there because the rain water runs off too quickly. It moves through the sandy soil, hits a layer of bedrock, and flows away. Trees need a lot of water and nutrients, and you wont find that in the desert plains.

What a great video. I'm a retired truck driver of 47 years. I never really got to stop and visit. Thank you for showing me what I've been missing. Next time have the motel put in a row-a-way bed. So nobody has to sleep on the floor. When we did go on a trip I had a 35 ft. motorhome with a 35 ft. camper. Now we did stay at campgrounds. But since I did have my Mother-in-law and Father-in-law with us they didn't want to stay in the motorhome all the time...lol... so that's how I know about the rollaway bed. Well anyway love the video.. can't wait for your next adventure...God Bless You and your family 😇💖

It is truly a joy to be able to live vicariously through your family on this road trip. As I said in an earlier comment, my family took a near identical trip in 1976, the same year as your great grandparents. We covered a lot of the same ground, and saw many of the same attractions. I'm pretty sure some of those things in Tombstone haven't changed in 47 years!
We also had a low gas emergency when we were driving south through the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. All of the gas stations were closed, because there was a big Navajo gathering down in Gallup. We eventually relented and managed to get a little leaded gas for our "unleaded gas only" car from a teenager in a small town, and made it to Gallup before running dry.
