Expand your vocabulary (through reading, listening, taking notes, and using new words when conversing with people). 2. Get straight to the point and give people the most important information only. 3. Share one thought at a time. 4. Identify your main point before you start talking. 5. Use reading to improve your speaking (by absorbing information and reading out loud). 6. Use writing to improve your speaking (it helps you to organize your ideas and thoughts which, over time, will help you to do the same when speaking). Writing can also be used to do "active recall" which involves summarizing something you've read (e.g. a chapter of a book). 7. Watch documentaries and interviews to study the verbal and nonverbal communication of articulate, eloquent people. I enjoy writing comments on RUclips on videos I watch, which helps me convey my thoughts in a brief, clear and interesting manner. I would add to Kara strong list by 1. Start off agreeing with or complimenting the person speaking. If you immediately go for the attack your audience will discount what you have to say. 2. Number your comments. For example, "there are four factors critical in completing this project on schedule." 3. Smile, speak slowly, have inflections in your speech, use hand gestors and believe that you are the greatest orator in world.
7:24 read it aloud for yourself, it does a great impact on your communication because it forces you to repeat sentences to communicate effectively 8:30 writing and active recall in your own words, better use the book's words! :) the Socratic method
i wish i had found this vid earlier, cuz being 64 its poss too late to change my ways!! i have been teaching (winging it) english for 17yrs now, and have struggled to find students, due to a combination of accent and talking too fast! I will watch yr vid several times and hope or pray that it will help me!!! as i am at my wits end!!!

Helpful tutorials thank you so much!! This is an area I struggle with. I get too much into my head and worry about what the other person is thinking. I can feel intimidated easily, especially when I'm around people with perceived academic backgrounds my voice shuts down. I instantly start feeling self-conscious, so much so that I struggle to concentrate on dialog. Do you have any tips for overcoming this?
Beautiful. I want to learn more from you. I most only regulate my ptsd symptom first before I start to learn something new. This is very helpfull knowledge. I take 50 tought at time and increase by 100 it feels so for me. I dont jump between tought I fly between them.

I'm so glad to hear that SM. I think improving communication takes time. Be patient with yourself and stay committed to it. One day, you'll see that your communication has improve a lot!
Sophisticated language has nothing to do with clarity, maybe a broad vocabulary does because it allows you to be specific in naming things and ideas. You can have an illiterate person engage in clear communication. Clarity is about being concise, communicating a single thought at a time in as few words as possible. Being concise is about being specific in what you say, using the right word to refer to an idea or a thing. Clarity is greatly helped by simplicity, in the structure of sentences and in the choice of word. Relying on nouns and verbs in a simple sentence to communicate an idea is as simple as it gets. However, conciseness and simplicity shouldn't compromise the completeness of the thought you're trying to communicate. I remember reading this in a book on English philology. Ultimately, clarity is about saying what you mean. If you do a good job at saying what you mean and people don't understand you, then you need to think about what you mean; maybe your thinking is the issue. I read somewhere that clarity of communication is like a clean (clear) window, through which you can see the interior of a house. The interior of the house is the thought in your mind and the window is your communication.

I used to over communicate as well. I use “top down” communication now. Clear and concise. I also adjust my style to the audience.

Another tip is to eliminate unnecessary helping words like "has/had" or "has/had been," which weaken your speech and pad it out.
