- Many world leaders made lofty environment-friendly promises at the United Nations General Assembly last month, and many more promises are expected next month during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.
But is the planet getting closer to net-zero emissions? Are governments and huge corporations making the investments and changes needed to slow the trends of global warming, carbon emissions, pollution and extreme weather?
Join host Steve Clemons in a wide-ranging conversation on climate change with the chief sustainability officer at General Electric, Roger Martella; and the energy and environment reporter at The Hill, Rachel Frazin.
As soon as I hear people talking about the year 2100 then I tune out. The climate emergency is NOW
Yes, we are destroying the planet faster than ever, progress
Dinosaur era had more co2 emissions than we have currently , about 5 times more
@@gardenstatePR What does that have to do with us now?
@@toychristopher we’re gonna all die regardless of what is done, it doesn’t matter
The earth is constantly cooking 🙂
If billionaires are so concerned about climate change, why do they keep buying waterfront properties and private islands?
They be dead before any climate disaster happens
The GM guy would be a good Vin Diesel stunt double 😏
I'm working as an Energy-transition consulant. I live in Europe, the only continent currently truly investing in climate-mitigation. Europe is investing 1,1 trillion over the next decade. In order to meet the Paris goals, the EU should invest 2,5-3 trillion, instead.
If the most pro-climate continent is even falling way short on what's needed to truly save ourselves, what chance do we have?
Climate change always. Only children and idiots can think they can do something with it. Just good money scam for clever world criminals.
Every journey starts with step 1... Patience
Pro climate continent, google who has the most hydroelectric and wind energy country out there
No..we can't change how mother nature reacts . And right now she madddd!!!
watching capitalism trying to fix its problems through business is the saddest thing ive ever seen.
It is offensive to witness. We need to dramatically reduce consumption, that’s it. And they won’t even mention it. They are willing to sacrifice everything for capitalism.
@@Rnankn do u releastically think American will reduce consumption
@@Rnankn can't really see socialism or communism fixing the climate for example Russia or China so unfortunately the only option left is capitalism who else u counting on??
We are really at Code Black (military awareness level), but we are distracted and thus unprepared.

*NO* Saved you 24 minutes!
Are we on the right course to deal with the climate emergency? Start by not inviting a spokesperson for General Electric.
Al Jazeera talking "we need Qatar Natural Gas!!!!"
The relevant things to do is phase out coal with natural gas, reforestation, shift from meat-based diet, not add to the rhetoric or enact policies to penalize the oil suppliers.
This is a journey to another planet. Not the one Musk planned.
When we come out the other end there will be different plants and animals and weather and people. XR
Ah, someone who gets it. We are about to see a lot of evolving and evolution only really happens at the edge of extinction. Like all transformations it also involves a lot of death. Unfortunately, real evolution may be the only way to change the evolved behavior that's killing us.
Disturbing....
No changes here in the Philippines
The biggest problem is ..... we’re depending on politicians to solve this global problem. I like the new meme - greenwash. What I never hear from news casts such as this is the word “conservation”. Consider the water shortage in our USA SouthWest: our reservoirs near bone dry, all the years these reservoirs’ level have been falling the notion of conserving the resource never came up as a policy. Is there even one tree planting program in the USA to capture carbon?
Spare me the anti-Chinese propaganda. China just brought yet another hydro facility online, the biggest in the World. Their solar facilities are absolutely huge. They have far more solar deployed then any country in the World. China is the only country that is addressing climate change at such huge scales.
You say "no Chinese propaganda" yet you basically just spouted Chinese propaganda. Nice.
Yes world change ...........🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Felt like a 25 minute advertisement for General Electric.
I’m looking forward to a changed climate.
Then you're clearly ignorant on the catastrophic consequences of it. Otherwise, you'd not even make jokes about it.
Rich, poor, African, Asian, European, we're all doomed if we keep on this trajectory.
@@t.miller8456 we are doomed even if we don’t.
I remembered a politician in Canada said, what's wrong with 2% warmer rise. Its good for us Canadians, its good for the Russians.. The disregard of life in already warm(mostly poor) countries is absurd, when 86% of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere came from rich countries
I would like to have seen charts total energy v renewables, with projected growth of renewables and another chart showing total sum of CO2 being released per year if the commitments are actually kept to (to show the gap)
No, Kyoto protocol was 1997, no achievement. Paris treaty, no achievement.. What's the difference now? Rich countries won't exchange economy for our planet
Save Our Planet
It took the US from 1880 to 1950 to electrify. 70 years. Over the last 70 years we've done little to nothing with the grid. America's wealth is built on innovation, basic research and development. Since 1980 US has lost its way, Financial machinations, manipulation, get rich quick schemes, financialization of everything. Climate represents the greatest opportunity in history. More money and wealth than all of history is already starting to flow. Countries and corporations focused on innovation will reap the rewards.
My reading of history is that the wealth of the Divided States of Obesity was build on genocide, slavery and theft. The innovation is much more recent.
Can the US innovate enough to undo the mess every nation has walked into? Maybe. Just keep the banks, the oil companies and the Pentagon from interfering in the R&D that is already underway...

No we don't. Carbon is just a new way of making money.
Easy answer, no.

BLAH BLAH BLAH!
Yea, right! It's always about energy, but what about consumerism, where this year you buy the I-10 phone, and next year you buy the I-11, even though to don't need it, but just to look good. We have to just buy what we need, and not what we want!
Question... Who fixed the climate during the ice age??
Answer... Nobody because the earth goes through different cycles and as u go back through history u will find temperatures have often been higher and lower and carbons also been much higher. Do some research before jumping in to these debates it'd help create a balanced discussion this was just a load of yes men agreeing with each other.
"Question... Who fixed the climate during the ice age??
Answer... Nobody because the earth goes through different cycles and as u go back through history u will find temperatures have often been higher and lower and carbons also been much higher."
So, given the fact that the climate has changed before from natural causes you conclude that the climate can only change from natural causes and it's impossible for humans to change it's temperature.
So if we were to build a giant mirror in orbit between the sun and the earth blocking the suns rays from reaching our planet the planet would somehow not change it's temperature. It would somehow compensate for this lack of energy with magic.
Great stuff there my dude.
@@nunofoo8620 that's actually not my point but appreciate the sarcasm.. All of the external human effects on the climate are being discussed an acted upon.. People now recycle as part of a daily routine, homes everywere have solar panels on, windfarms are all over the place, companies have reduced emissions, cars are heading towards electric or at least hybrid. An all good towards that.. But is it the factor in climate change or is there a natural cycle that repeats and changes historically. Is the climate issue overhyped in order for us to clean up our habits?.. An if these things are so necessary in order for humanity to survive then why is the world so excepting of other countries (with much bigger effect on the climate) being immune from having to follow these changes.
These are relevant points that shouldn't be ignored when having these discussions. We can improve quality of life without scaring the world into thinking there's an incoming climate disaster which is my genuine opinion of all this. I've studied the science behind global change and seen these changes happen before infact the world's climate now is far better then its been before in the earth's history so why the panic??

It is? Which scientist said that CO2 from China or India doesn't affect the climate or that they don't need to reduce their emissions?

Really? You've studied the hearth's past history?
What do you have to say about the permian-triassic extinction? Honest question. I would really love for you to talk about it. Did you knew about it before i mentioned it? Do you think it was "bad" for the creatures alive at the time? What caused it? What happened to the earth's temperature back then? And what effect did that sudden increase in temperature had?
