- We discuss how broadening the definition of anti-Semitism could impact activists and Jewish communities.
While Israel’s war on Gaza continues, the United States Senate is expected to vote on the Antisemitism Awareness Act after it passed the House of Representatives this month with a large majority.
Rights groups warn that the bill’s use of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition will conflate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism, which could stifle protests against Israel’s operations in the Palestinian territory.
So what could the legislation mean for the movement against Israel’s war on Gaza and to Jewish communities grappling with fear for their safety?
This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill talks to contributing columnist at The Forward, Rabbi Jay Michaelson, and president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace, Lara Friedman, about efforts to expand anti-Semitism’s definition and the impact they could have.

This is a point that so often gets misunderstood by the public and manipulated by the likes of the ADL and mainstream media.
True antisemitism is hate of Jews for being Jews.
'Fake' antisemitism is outrage directed at Jews for the actions of Zionists.
Both are wrong, but the rationale behind them is different. If Israel stopped their unending, decades long campaign of crimes against humanity, false antisemitism would go away, but true antisemitism wouldn't, and that's the important distinction. Of course, the other culprits for the rise in claims of antisemitism are false claims by Zionists of being attacked for their Judaism when it is really just their Zionist hate, and of course the innumerable nonsense claims that peace protests and human rights advocacy are antisemitic.
Most people just take the claims that are parroted by the news as truth, and never realize that this nuance unravels most of the Zionists' rhetoric.
Israel and Netanyahu have been conflating Israel and Judaism for years to immediately block criticism by labelling it antisemitic. It's worked, too.

But I think that’s one of the driving forces for Jews leading many of these protests. #1, is that they obviously want to stop the genocide and #2, they feel especially compelled because they recoil in revulsion that it is being perpetrated in their name.

We will keep speaking . It is our 1st amendment right, and the definitions in there are violation of freedom of religion. We can criticize our government and we sure will criticize Israel.

7) We want more secularism
and appeasement when we are in minority but secularism is shirk when we are in majority.
8) We don't want other faiths in Mecca & Medina but we want mosques in Kashi, Ayodhya, Mathura, Jerusalem & Bethlehem.
9) Colonialism is evil but
Ottoman and Mughal conquests demonstrates exemplary valour and Indians are lucky to be invaded by Mughals.
10) We have 56 nations which
we got by force and deception but we don't accept a Jewish state or a Hindu state though they're much older than our faith.
11) Once a Mandir can become a masjid, but once a masjid always a masjid. Babri shall rise again Insha'Allah.
12) Hindus should not try to
settle in Kashmir but Kashmiris can settle anywhere in India.
13) We freely boycott non-halal forever, but if others boycott halal then they're racist and Islamophobe.

Jewish people have thrived in America. Most Americans have no antisemitic sentiments. If the war in Gaza ended tomorrow so would the protest and all this talk of antisemitism.

Actually this is domestic. It’s a big election year and both sides need the backing of an American pro-Israel conservative lobbying group to gave a chance. And that group demands that we fully back Israel, no matter what. And since 70% of Americans claim to be Christian, and the biggest voting block of Republicans are Evangelicals and the Jewish vote is a key group for Democrats, the calculus is that blind Zionism is a vital aspect of American patriotism, and if they come out as vote against Israel, they will lose the election. By voting on legislation like this and the arms aid bills, they thereby prove that they are pro-Israel and an American patriot.

not there, it's not a good thing obviously, it shows that they too, like the mainstream western media, are beholden to the wishes of the wealthy where they come from
however, that doesn't mean that they were also wrong to be one of the only large media groups actually willing to talk about this genocide. don't get me wrong, that isn't nearly as controversial amongst their audience as it is in western media, so it isnt as "brave" as it would be if they actually started speaking up about genocide, but it is important to have nuance.
if someone does good at some point, it doesnt mean they are incapable of doing bad, and vice versa, and this is something people often lose sight of in social media

I understand where you are coming from, and I agree that israel is commiting genocide because I have eyes, but we must detach this "reasoning" for the killing argument because it is irrelevant to whether or not genocide is occuring. Even if the people Israel claims to oppose (Hamas, and not the innocent civilians, although this is obviously a lie) were antisemitic, the punishment for that is not death, and certainly not death of their family and loved ones who were not involved. Any genocide is wrong completely notwithstanding any motive one may have for it.
