Soft Tip Suction Probe Used to Extract Dead Skin From Ears (Clearway Suction Tool)

  • In this video we trial a new microsuction tool called the Clearway Suction Handle (we requested a free sample from DTR Medical which they provided). The soft tip allows the suction probe to deform and latch onto the surface of uneven objects, such as foreign bodies and plugs of dead skin and wax.

    I've always wondered about this kind of wax/skin! Thanks for showing us your new gadget - It really lifted it just like suction tube on regular wax. I like that it's soft plastic too - Adds that degree of safety to it too. I hope your day is going well, Conor 😊

    I think it's fascinating there's so many choices! The new tool being silicone based is a great alternative for someone with a latex allergy (like myself) plus one can use olive oil not just almond oil if again they have a severe anaphylaxitic reaction to nuts (again me!). You make the world of audiology so intriguing :) great content as per usual! Xxxx

    There are times when I wish I could show patients the "dome-shaped" depression. It seems like it might make more sense to them why it is problematic to use Q-tips/ cotton buds

    • @ladyfalcon4208
      @ladyfalcon4208 3 года назад +6

      Can the q-tips can cause a depression on the ear drum after using them for years? That sounds pretty troublesome, especially for those in their later years of life. I had no idea that something like that could happen by using qtips. I knew the dangers of a damaged eardrum.

      @@ladyfalcon4208 The Q-tip is almost certainly not coming up against your ear drum... believe me, you'd know! I have definitely seen patients who used Q-tips enough that the entire length of the ear canal was full of wax, and they ended up pushing the wax through the ear drum. I've also had patients perforate their ear drum with the Q-tip. Not pretty...
      I always tell my patients that the only thing they should ever put in their ear is their elbow (it is so much fun to watch a six-year-old try to put their elbow in their ear!)

    This is so fascinating. My husband suffers from hearing loss due to premature birth. One ear has been treated with a reconstructive surgery when he was a 13. His hearing improved but not greatly. He has a perforation in both ear drums and about 30% hearing in one ear and about 50% in the other. Seeing the doctors clear out his ear and wow...big hard clumps of wax and skin. He has little to no hairs in his ears...so it gets all plugged up.About 10 years ago he had a BAHA implanted ( BAHA= Bone anchored hearing aid) and it has changed his life...and mine to for that matter. I love your channel and I have learned so much about the ear and the why it builds up what it does.

    What a good idea, to use it in this way, will you continue to use it as it is, or maybe adept it slightly ? Another question for you, could you explain about "Musical ear syndrome" ? And how you would best treat it. Or would hearing aids be all that you could do, to try and improve things. Thanks

      I think until they come out with a smaller version it's going to be on the side line except in rare cases, it's pretty massive in an average ear. Sure I'll script a video on musical tinnitus.

    Very neat tool. Do you think it would have worked as easily if you hadn't used the steel suction to unstick the edges of the plug from the ear canal?

      I think it would have been more uncomfortable for the patient, probably would have pulled out the same

    This looks like a good tool. I have often wondered why silicone is not used more in ear tools. Seems like it would provide a cushion for tools like the ST Barts hook.

      Seems like a Good Idea, but the Audiologist might lose something in the Tactile 'feel,' of the tool used.
