I’m horrified that these are available and even worse that instead of waiting to go for hearing tests in the NHS the poor man resorted to this.
I went for a hearing test at a clinic and before I knew it I’d spent 2k on hearing aids. 3 years on and I’ve seldom worn them after going back to the clinic where the audiologist was incredibly rude. I left in tears feeling I was the most stupid person on the earth and have been scared to go back since apart from not being able to pay £100 for a hearing aid check.

I'm 83. As a child, I had lots of ear infections and my eardrum finally remained open and never healed until I had restorative surgery at 36. Also, the bones had become infected and sort of fell apart. It's so informative to see how the ear works, where the little bones are supposed to be, and what things look like in there after you pull out the wax. Thanks so much for the education! This is a mostly overblown piece of advice. From my experience with in ear monitors (IEMs) and earbuds, the eartips rarely want to detach from the earphone unless you improperly install the eartip, use the wrong bore sized eartips (bigger = looser), or violently yank the earbuds/IEMs out of the ear. Gradually loosening the earphone's seal against the ear and/or pulling on your earflap should keep this from ever happening. I've been using IEMs and earbuds for over 5 years now without any instance of the eartips getting stuck in my ear.

For an adult the ear-canal is approximately 2.5cm in length (ranging from 2.3cm to 2.8cm). Hope this helps. 😉
Also, something that might be interesting. A regular ear-bud (those colored things from memoryfoam you can stick into your ears to sleep) are usually 2.3cm in length so you should never stick them into your ears completely as when they expand they press down pretty heavily against your ear-drums.

@@humanbean4037 Yeah, if you have a shorter ear-canal they could be making contact with your ear-drums; although the constant expanding of the foam may also irritate the ear-canal itself. Every time I used those standard memoryfoam buds my entire ear-canal would start hurting the next day. Luckily I managed to find silicone ear-buds that do not expand and can be used to close off the canal. Pretty inexpensive too as I found a box of 12 reusable ones over on some chinese website called Temu for just a few bucks. Been using those now for over a year and they work great for me. 😄

A person has to careful what they stick in their ears. It can end badly. Fortunately, you were there to help. After watching your channel, I talked to my doctor about being referred to an ENT to have my ears checked. He checks them once a year and cleans them out. I haven't had any major problems, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The ENT looked at the amount of wax buildup and figured out a reasonable schedule for a routine cleaning. In my case, once a year is probably enough. If my insurance will cover it, I would much prefer to have a professional handle these things. I have seen too many times on your channel and others how DIY ear care has only caused additional problems.

This happened in my mid teens but i was determined to get it removed for her so she doesn't have to see a specialist. But i did say if it felt weird or got more sore to see her doctor. I once went to a doctor for a yearly checkup, nothing special it was just time to get a physical done, like how you go to the dentist twice a year for routine cleaning. While he was checking my ears I was explaining to him that my middle and inner ear were gonna look strange bc of all the surgeries I had as a kid, and I remember he paused when he got to my left ear and then asked, “Do you wear a hearing aid?” I was so confused bc I hadn’t told him yet that I did in fact have a hearing aid, but it accidentally got packed with some boxes in storage. I asked how he knew and I kid you not he took an alligator clamp and pulled out the rubber end that goes into my ear. I have no idea how it got stuck, nor how long it was in my ear.

It’s not free in the U.K. either. There is some on the NH.s but it is normally an extremely long wait (which can mean the problem gets worse) and treatment may be minimal. Sometimes to get timely and thorough treatment you have to go private, but to find someone as good as Connor is of course not easy. My late Nan went through a number of audiologists and to quote Connor and paraphrase my Nan, ‘they were all frigging useless’. Nan was less polite of course as she wasn’t being recorded….

Hopefully he has by now! It took literal years to persuade my mum that she needed a hearing test, despite her needing both subtitles and the TV volume set to 30 (for context I usually had it set to 7-8). We endured years of the TV in her bedroom being so loud that I couldn't sleep, despite being on the other side of the house with the bedroom door shut...
The only way I managed to get her to go was to make it difficult to ignore the issue - so I basically pestered her to go to the optician/hearing centre every single time the TV was too loud or she couldn't hear me. She's got a certain expression that tells me she can't hear what I'm saying and is just nodding along; I know it's not intentional but they expression feels really condescending, if you know what I mean? I know she's not doing it but it feels like taking to someone who's just waiting for you to stop talking so they can leave and do more important things than listen to whatever you're yammering on about. I know that's not what's happening, but it bloody well feels like it at the time!
Anyway, this a tactic that works pretty well in most situations - you just need to find a way to swap the amount of effort between doing something vs doing nothing, if that makes sense?

  • @awkerper

I'd wager that when the rubber object was pressed into the ear, wax blocked the central hole in the object and created a sealed chamber between the object and ear drum. Thus, pulling the object out without breaking the suction also pulled on the ear drum and cause discomfort.

These look like silicone ear plugs that fit on the end of wired type earbuds. These are replaceable silicone plugs and come in different shapes and sizes. Some look like Christmas trees and have three rings on them, some a single one. It looks like with this patient they came off the earbud and he somehow managed to push them further into the ear. They were way too far in the ear to be able to push them in with the headset. I suspect the patient tried to dig them out with a cotton bud or something and wound up pushing it in further. I have these type of earbuds, and they're great for noise cancelling in high noise areas, like airplanes. They work great when used correctly.

I was Diagnosed as hearing impaired as a 3 year old in 1994. I was so happy when i upgraded from Analog to Digital hearing aids in 2008, for many reasons, but the biggest was DEFINITELY the lack of Feedback Squealing. SO MANY THINGS would set it off; overly loud sounds, dirty ears, pulling ANYTHING over your head or covering the device in any way, simply hugging a friend or family member…and the sound quality you got when it wasn’t wigging out wasn’t even that good, like listening to the world through a tin can. 😖 today as a nearly 33 year old, I’ve seen hearing Aids come a LONG WAY, and i have more to look forward to still. 😅
