  • An Alpine Car Stereo from the Mid/Late 80's with the complaint of "Intermittent Left Channel" I think I may have fixed it by resoldering just 2 solder connections. Tell me what you think.

Alpines were always my favorite car stereos growing up.

Alpines and Kenwoods were the best. Today most cars come with decent radios so aftermarket ones are not in as high demand. These older ones are gorgeous and were well made.

I was an Alpine/Luxman manufacturer rep when this unit was part of their lineup. It was a first-rate product because...Alps quality parts.

Where in Northern CA are you located? I'm in Martinez. Always good to know of repair men near me. You guys are a dying breed.

I had a 7273E when they were brand new back in the late 80s. I ended up selling it, but since then have picked up a few more.
The L version you worked on here is not as common - the L being 'long wave' which this deck has. The E suffix units don't have that band.
I am a specialist repairer of vintage Alpine gear like this. I have been doing it for a few decades now and I am in NZ if anyone has anything they want to get working again.
I've repaired a few of these 7273 decks as they are all starting to show signs of age - dry joints, failing capacitors, perished belts and more.

Beautiful looking thing....takes me back to 1984 and in my 1969 English Ford Capri. I could not afford the Alpine so I got the Alpine clone; Altec....did not look or sound as nice. Cheers from Sunny Australia!!!!

I owned a number of those Capris. The oldest was a '72 with the Brazilian made V6 engine.

@@bobbyk6585 Yes the Australian Capris had two V6 options, 3.0 litre GT and 3.1 litre RS. Many guys here also fitted Ford Windsor 302 V8 engines because they were narrow enough to fit (60° V8). Cheers from Sunny Australia!

I looked for the power amplifier chip, but i must be blind.
They get hot and create solder cracks.
Chips bolted to the back panel are always a risk (silly design).
I knew the vertical module did some radio function, the 3 pin filters are part of the intermediate frequency conversion stages.
Get yourself a nice cup of coffee, I'm sure it helps your diagnostic side :-D
