- A HUGE thank you to Gareth Peate (@gawuffy) for managing to track down this train set and present it to me as a gift for Christmas. This set really did start it all. There literally would be no IC82 without this train set - making it at least as important to humanity as... highlighters. Enjoy!

my first set as well! brings back fond memories
My dad had that lovely class 08 that was seen in the catalog, that was the only engine he would let me run on his layout and I loved it. When he left home in the mid 90s all the trains went to, sadly he pasted a number of years ago but that little diesel is now in my care and still loved by me to this day.
I'm sorry for your loss, maybe he's up there somewhere and watching over you. Just remember to think of him whenever you use that train.
I AM Going To Get This Train Set!
I can't recall what my first train set was called, but I remember that it had an Amtrak F-40PH locomotive (which I still have, and it still works, lights and all), and three or four Amfleet I coaches, as well as a Spectrum Magnum controller and enough track to make a loop. I loved that train set so much. The coaches weren't great, but the locomotive was really part of my childhood. I later got another Amtrak F-40PH, which I named "Bull" for some reason. I still have this locomotive too.
My first train set was a Hornby 3 rail freight set 0-6-0 diecast body tank engine, a van, 2 trucks and a guards van, plus 2 LMS coaches with screen printed 'detail'. If you think the controller you had was rubbish, you should have seen the one we had then (1950s)!
Happy days Will.
I got the Lima version of the HST set for my birthday in June 1986. I received the Midnight Freight set as a child in June 1988 when I was just 8 years old. Great fun them days were and I saved my pocket money every week to buy locomotives and/or rolling stockm track etc. I managed to build my very first model railway at the age of just 11 in late 1991. Nostalgia just comes flowing in when thinking about it. Great video as always Will, keep up the great work like this.
Best Regards
Ash.
i cant stop watching your videos. I don't care for Hornby, british rail or OO but I cant stop watching these. they soothe me, they entertain me, they inspire me.
I'm in love with those old graphics. Being a design student, I feel that the older graphics on packaging & brochures from the eighties. Heck, even computers. The ZX Spectrum looks so nice visually. That cassette's also been played at some point. I'm so jealous you have that retro tech
I remember back in 2011 when i discivored you and just binged on all your videos! You deservere everything you have got! Most popular model railway channel in the uk! very inspiring!
Congrats on 5 years as Intercity82. Here's to many more. Keep up the great work.
The Midnight Freight Train Set represented the best value in the 1986 Hornby catalog... Bought for out boys... we still have it.
I totally agree! I have my dads '77 Silver Jubilee Pullman set with a Hall class Albert Hall which still works and still has the catalogue and it's much better than the recent sets! It comes with beautiful Pullman coaches and loads of accessories including a tunnel. I 100% agree that the sets from back in the day are a lot better
I own the Class 37 set. Was given it for my 10th birthday by my grandparents. My first train set was the ATeam set. Got it when I was 4 from my parents. The A Team diesel does not work as well, but my Class 37 works brilliantly still all these years later!! Getting the flying Scotsman set also, so I am getting back in deep. Especially now I am earning ;)
Well done IC82! Good job on coming this far - here's for the next 5!
Thanks for another great video IC82! Looking forward to Part 2.
oh my god so much better now and that was a great video it's my favorite one on your channel
Well done on now more than 5 years on youtube. Really liked the video.
So much yes!! Always wanted to get into model railway based things. Was once given a Intercity 125 and loved it! Sadly she never ran due to age (this was 2001)... Broke my heart :'(
Just WOW! I remember my first train set in the early 90s was a basic Santa Fe set that I got for Christmas.
Wow! The amount of stuff in that set seems phenomenal!
I remember having the exact same catalogue and ticking off all the things I wanted....sadly that didn't happen, but I totally get the nostalgia thing. The pictures always made it exciting!
Happy 5th Anniversary Intercity82. Very nice video.
Watching the vid right now enjoying it and i would just like to congrats you on 5 years keep it up dont forget youve got 26K!!! Congrats
Congratulations on 5 years of videos! That set triggered of what is now a channel with 27K subs! Keep up the good work! -Nathaniel
Absolutely love this video - a fantastic time capsule and great look back at how model railways were back in the 80s! I got the HST set shown in the catalogue. The first set I ever got though was a clockwork trainset with a little red steam loco, I still remember the excitement I felt when I got that, probably in 1982/83. Fond memories! :)
Wow! Great video, Will :) That set was sold as unused, although I guess the loco took a bit of a knock at some point in its life - sure it'll enjoy a spell in Crewe Works!
WOW Will, well done for 27,000 subscribers, & in 5 years. This Hornby catalogue brings back memories to me to, & its good to go back to the set that started it all, & I have to agree with you, you get quit a lot in the set.
I also remember the cassette tape if I remember, the side were they explain how to set every thing up, someone is showing Noel Edmunds how to do it.
You are very lucky to get the set in such good condition too, I watched your video on the big screen with my daughter & we both cant wait for the next instalment. My channel is picking up slowly, & I'm getting more subscribers, but I still need to work at it, its a little difficult some times to do videos with my daughter demanding lots of attention.
I have a layout to build once iv completed some DIY so cant wait to shear a new video of the layout with everyone.
Happy Modelling,
Phil
Congrats on 5 years of fantastic videos!
allways loved trains from day one i recently started up with a layout and the spark that lit the flame was midnight freight the 1986 set with the kp wagon was given to me by my partners grandma after she bought it for her brother in 1986 and he never liked trains so it was stored in the attic untill she met me and i must say the 58 from that set was the best train i owned untill i started to upgrade to dcc and im torn weather to convert it or leave it as it was from all those years ago
thanks for making this video its been amazing to see someone with the spark as i me
What an awesome video!!! The 80s were a great time and yes we did cope 😀😀. Love the class 58. I have two Heljan ones and a Hornby one. My first set was one that had Smokey Joe in it (Christmas 83) followed by a class 47 The Queen Mother the following year.....good times !!
Hello Will. Great video. It brought back many memories for me. I still had most of my original train set, except for the original box and locomotive. I was a bit foolish in my youth. I cut out the middle section of the locomotive body and glued the ends together to make it really short. When eBay came around, I was able to get a replacement box and locomotive to restore my original set. I took out all of the rolling stock that came with the new set and put my original wagons in the replacement box. So now, when I open the box, it is mostly my original equipment.
Great video and a look back at how a lot of the older generation first got inspired or interested in trains,,,, adding there match box toys and carrying the childhood interests on through life..... well done ,,, well presented...... Thanks to all concerned ,,,, Alan
thanks for sharing this special video Will
My first train set I ever got was made by Bachmann and it was an EMD F7 in a Norfolk Southern paint scheme. It came with a red caboose with the NS logo, a silver gondola, and a hopper car with the NS logo.
I actually got it on November 4th 2016, so it's relatively new.
Great to see - Midnight Freight was my first too. I still have all the rolling stock and loco all these years later. I don't think I got it in '86 but maybe late 80s/early 90s. I might even still have the box in the shed!
I fondly remember my Flying Scotsman set, circa 1993, althought one of my favourite Christmas memories is opening all of my presents. Only realising I'd missed one out, and lo and behold it was my circa 1995 Mallard in garter blue.
Great video and wonderful to see the good old Spectrum out and about. I agree with you that modern train sets lack play value. Paddy
The Model Shop in Northampton is still going strong today and was even around back in the day. Happy 5th Anniversary
Had to like & fave this! Like when I opened my Flying Scotsman set with my dad in 2003, ok a big difference there in terms of years, but my dad did the same with his B12 set back in 1971
My favourite video! So nostalgic.
Watching your videos makes me excited to start working, so I can buy my first train set.
When you were going through all the paperwork and came across the list of modelshops I spotted B and H model in Lincolnshire; I can tell you that they're still in thriving business to this day as until about a year and a half ago they were my local modelshop. Funny to think how old it is.
Congrats
Absolutely amazing. I remember my first train set being a postwar lionel steamer plus some freight cars and track. That was back when I was into O scale trains. Of course, I migrated to N scale as the years went on and I'm now where I am today.
As Simon Kohler said in his RUclips interview, Hornby used to inset a sheet with all of the authorized dealers with into their train sets. But alas, many don't exist anymore. The retail marketplace has changed with Amazon, eBay, and online stores. As the dealer sheet showed, there used to be hobby shops in every town. While Hornby's online store doesn't have the lowest prices, Hornby feels the need to have a online store just to provide availability to many towns, what Simon called a store front. They still do most of their business with other retail outlets who compete on prices.
I’ve just re bought this today to treat myself for my birthday. It was my first set too 1986 christmas.
Good job bro i have wached your videos for 2 years
Excellent video Will. I've got the same Class 58 (58001) lying around somewhere. Like you've said before, it all begins with a starter set. Cameron
Fascinating. What a fantastic piece of the 1980s.
To ic82 thanks so much for the videos In the past you got me back into railways and without you I wouldn't be earning university points so I owe it all to you so keep making those videos plz don't stop and can u review the hornby railroad flying scotsman
Hey Fella, Just thought i'd say that the Midnight freight was also my first set. Got it for Christmas off my Grandparents when I was 5....Also 1986. Sadly the original set was stolen, but i managed to get hold of another on ebay a few years back. paid £70 for it and still have it now. Rarely see them on anymore. Hornby released a second set called midnight freight, but no where near as good :)
I had a Red Arrows and an esso trucks as a kid. Got them cheap at a model rail fair. Many a happy hour running them on My First Hornby
I can remember seeing Midnight Freight set in the window of an old shop set window in a museum, but cannot remember where it was
Will Will Will!!!! GUESE WHAT!!!!!! I JUST SAW ON RUclips A VERY OLD VIDEO FROM 1986 OF 58 001 PULLING A COAL TRAIN IN THOSE OLD RAILFREIGHT HOPPERS :D
Great video and wow what a set! I never realised that your 58 came from a set :D
Another great video mate :)
Wow, that's your first train set? Very nice, I must say. I share similar feeling towards my first train set which happens to be an H0 scale (American scale, very similar to your 00 gauge and can run on your track) CSX F unit from Athearn (model railroad manufacturer) from the early 2000's that came with a few freight cars. Still have the contents of the box to this day with the box being long gone by now. The locomotive runs just as good as it did day one much like your's. :)
My dad has this train set, he past it onto me when I was about 4 or 5 its is what got me into model railways aswell. I still have the red arrows box van, the esso tanker, the S&O coal wagon and the HAA hopper :D
My first train set too! Along with the diesel shutter set! Was about 1988 when I got mine though
Happy 5 anniversary
God will your great this reminds me of the little 8 year old on a kitchen floor with his the midnight frieght set that's what got me into what is now a huge layout
I've go an HST set from 1986 (still runs smooth and effortless ) I agree some of the older train sets are much more interesting and you got a for your money.
Mine was the Caledonian belle it is my most important hornby to me!!! without it I would never have heard of model railways
Congrats on 70k
Great job😀😀😀
Very nostalgic! Though I was born in 2000...
i have that locomotive!! runs like a dream, so smooth!
I remember drooling over that catalog for hours as a 10 year old:)
Great video will
cool vid....everyone always comes back to the hobby....my gap was 25 years....
fantastic set I had this class 58 loco as well ☺
eather though iwas born in the late 90's i love the 80's
If you weren't into trains I wouldn't of liked them I watched one of your review sets like 4 years ago and loved trains to this day
Happy 5th year Will! My first set was the intercity 225. Still got it, still love it :-)
Do you remember a while ago you said you wanted to do a few mountain bike video's? Do you know if that's going to happen yet?
nice video man and you good a very good first train set but i got the flying scotsman starter set its better than i thought
I’m started my own railway two months ago, I have the Intercity Express (class 395) and a little 0-4-0 with some random freight, also hoping to get the tornado for Christmas!
Nice
The audio cassette with the "guy setting it all up" was Noel Edmonds and (I may be wrong) Howard Leader from the BBC show 'That's Life'.
Yes! Noel! Still got that tape somewhere
Gr8 video
:-)
Planes and trains go to gather like bread and butter you can love both at the same time.
My Grandad Brought Me My First Class 58 I Still Love It Today
A few months ago I got an old 58 and it is very good
I found my first model train not long ago. It's a 125 painted in the Australian Countrylink livery.
One thing I know about the class 58 diesels is that some of them were imported into Spain.
Will, we love this video! We really want to see part two but the link isn't working for us and we did a search in your videos and can't find it! Would you be able to please post the link to part two here? Thank you!
nice
I had the same 58 set with the KP nuts, i think i was about 4 or 5 years old.
8 wagons! You wouldn't get that now!
Will you can never lose the love of aeroplanes! Some things never change, your first train set with the Red Arrows Wagon and the painting of the Hawk, today the jet is still flying.
It’s basically the modern Hornby Railroad catalogue.
I believe the Hornby train set with the Class 06 shunter was the Goods Master train set.
The paper work shows the date 22/05/91 !? If it is a date it would be the packing date.
Good vid of a old unused set.
Lucky , my brother had the mixed passenger freight. Gwr . He wanted midnight freight
I have the KP Peanuts van! Great model if unrealistic haha
joblot of old trains and other stuff got me into trains
British airways should schedule their timetable around your video
love it great video :) :)
can you make a vid of u put thr train on the track
I feel so old.
Know what would be cool InterCity82? If you took your original Class 58 and did a restoration project.
He mentioned some videos ago that he wouldn't do that
Great video, Interity82. Do you reckon you would ever do a review of Bachmann's "The Railway Children" Train pack/set? Thanks.
