I always remember watching you as a kid! Whenever I see this come into my recommendations, I get all these feelings rushing back and when I watch it it makes me feel like I’m 5 years old again, dreaming about the model railway I was building with my grandad!
@tjf4375 I know! The 'scratchy' feeling rom the units is the pick-ups isn't it? For the lights in each end. Doesn't seem worth it when you look at how dim they are lol! Might need to replace them fim little bulbs I think.
BTW, The class 170 actually started in scotland for relief services that reduced the time to 15 minutes. It can couple up to other U.K wide trains and started in Edinburgh where the first unit was built. It originally came in 3 car units, serving Edinburgh to Glasgow via Lothian and always had dot matrix display boards saying 170 turbostars previously designated as the class 170/2 or 170/4 units made in 1999 in the scotrail swoop livery as it's first livery from ADTranz Derbyshire, in the U.K.
In my opinion, you should be the marketing guy for Hornby/Bachmann. I have purchased some of their products especially after going through your video's. Ur reviews are excellent, plus the way you do it, reminds us no matter how old we grow, there is still a lot of joy one can gain from this hobby. I just loved the amazing ViTrains Class 37 video you made ! Hornby, Bachmann, Vi Trains....are you listening ? One of the reasons your products sell is because of this guy ! Pls give him due credit !!
Nice. I only have a 1 train, The hornby canadian pacific in navy blue. My grandad collected hornby trains and I'd go up for my birthday and pick one at random. I don't play with my trains much anymore. I should run it again. It does run really nice.
great dmu ! where the blue tack gone its done a runner and left the track all wobberly like jelly. Its a good thing that your locos and trains dont snore your hosue would be like a brass band XD lol.
@TrailBlazer65 Don't get me wrong there are a very efficient coupling, they don't slip off so you dont loose part of your train. For the DMUs they would be very good as there is no need to uncouple them.
Now you have been introduced to the awesomeness that is Bachmann. I love Bachmann. I have Bachmann's Acela train, which is amazingly detailed (working pantographs and opening doors) and a Bachmann Spectrum 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain in Chessapeake and Ohio colours.
Good review! I would like to add that both the drive and the couplers are classic 80ies PIKO technology. You can still see them in starter packages. If you want to get higher brightness from the lights without dcc, you could use a controller with a directional constant lighting circuit, so the lights could stay on full brightness even while the train is standing. Btw dccing could be done by two ways. The easy and expensive one is to use 3 decoders (1 loco,2 lights) or use 1 and wire across cars.
@InterCity82 Ah yes I think you're right, that makes sense! Agreed whatever the pickup arrangement is, it's not working too well, the lights on mine are exceptionally dim too! They're very nicely detailed and painted though, so I guess that makes up for it :) I wish Bachmann would do the Electrostar family as well, as they're very similar to the turbostars, but we'll be waiting a while I think!
I love your enthusiasm for these things! It almost makes me want to get into trains again! And I'm 30! Not a fan of OO though as it's just too big. I prefer N gauge and wish it was as popular as it used to be. My local ModelZone has some beautiful N-gauge locos though...
Wow looks so much like the prototype. They form the backbone of the Scotrail fleet since early 2000. Often see them team up with a 158 for the central highland line, always looks cool ;)
@APOTwixx the score did take the lights into account. There was no way it could get higher than 8 in my opinion as its lights are seriously dim plus filling an entire unit with a motor is a bit silly.
I have this loco and have reviewed it. Also, i live next to the Leicester to Birmingham Line and there are regular XC class 170s and i have been on many of them!
Great review as always.Laughing when you continued the video in the dark, early hours of the morning and whispering that it does have lights. All you have to do now is find out if this was the one you travelled on.
great vid but be careful with the couplings they can break very easly and the class 158 and 170 have the same couplings as far as i'm aware of if so they could be a DMU Pair but cross country don't own 158s sadly
yes it really is a fantastic model they really do have superb detail especially on the led electric display. please could you review the BR Blue class 25.
The 170 owes much of it's design to the Class 166, part of the design being copied were in fact the bogies, hence why Bachmann have suited reality and used the same bogies for each unit - because they are the same bogies.
I am not sue if your aware of this or want to do this but there are actually two way's to connect make them DCC. First way you could use female and male micro plugs between the cars. You could have a speaker in each end car for the sound and have those speaker's connected via those plugs to the power center car which would contain the sound decoder. The lights would go the same way connecting to the decoder. Second option is to put a DCC decoder in all the cars with the two end cars having the speakers and sound decoders. Extra pickup's more then likely will be needed for this. But you wouldn't need to drill out holes for those emu plugs and each unit would be self contained so it wouldn't be an issue to couple and uncouple them. If you plan to upgrade her I look forward to seeing it when its finished!! :-)
These are brilliant units. Once my layout is built I will have 3 in operation, in MML, South West & Central Trains liveries. DCC is possible on these units as I have had my Central Trains (3 car) converted. There is the need for 3 decoders & an insertion of a socket for these, so unless you do it yourself it is a little pricey to go DCC, but well worth it.
Great video, i think the big centrally mounted motors used by bachmann were more reliable and easier to service in the DMUs you couldn't see inside them anyway and you could still fit a few fare dodgers in the few seats in the power car 😊
I have this train in the same livery and I found that the wheels get dirty very quickly. And if you look in coach B there are seats - except there's only 8 of them.
I've rode them trains many times, I've been to Birmingham on one from Nottingham, and also to Cardiff. I've also ridden a 170 for London Midland from Birmingham to Shrewsbury.
Great review Will, the bachmann turbostars are great aren't they! I've got the Chiltern liveried one, I noticed the same thing with the coaches, that they seem a bit scratchy and don't feel very free running on the tracks but the unit as a whole seems to run just fine. Crazy that you ended up getting the very same one you travelled on!
I wish somebody would make the 377, Love that EMU, look great in southern livery. I'm pretty sure the Brighton mainline is the only mainline without it's more common train modeled.
I always remember watching you as a kid! Whenever I see this come into my recommendations, I get all these feelings rushing back and when I watch it it makes me feel like I’m 5 years old again, dreaming about the model railway I was building with my grandad!
Very good. The way you talk about the models almost brings tears to my eyes. Excellent. All the best.
@tjf4375 I know! The 'scratchy' feeling rom the units is the pick-ups isn't it? For the lights in each end. Doesn't seem worth it when you look at how dim they are lol! Might need to replace them fim little bulbs I think.
The class 170 appears to perform in a most stately manner. Her Majesty will be pleased!
Upon close inspection the drive unit does have interior seats, just not where the massive motor is! Great review as always!
I'm not a train enthusiast or anything but I enjoyed watching this, it's fun to watch videos of people with a passion for something. :p
I love model railways, the only problem is the price-tag, but I want to start collecting short-long dmus and emus because of how neat they look
P pm P
I agree that they're expensive
your the best train reviewer in the world. you were the one that inspired me to trains.

The Amazing Class 170 Cross Country To Nottingham! Absolutely Stunning InterCity, Please Upload More Of This. ❤👌👍
The internal coupling is the standard European HO type. Bachmann also use it on other DMUs like the 108. It's very reliable.
great review as allways will I've not been on a 170 yet. But they sound like a treat to ride on.
Very nice, the motor sounds similar to the one which is in my Bachmann 108 DMU which also has lights on the outside and lights on the inside on DC!
I can t believe this train didn't come in your top 10 video
great dmu ! where the blue tack gone its done a runner and left the track all wobberly like jelly. Its a good thing that your locos and trains dont snore your hosue would be like a brass band XD lol.

I go on these trains all the time they are lovely.

I recently got this DMU myself except it was in South West Trains livery instead of Cross Country and it was a 2 car instead of 3 car. They are ace!
I really enjoy your videos.. its like having your best mate in the room with you..
@InterCity82 Ah yes I think you're right, that makes sense! Agreed whatever the pickup arrangement is, it's not working too well, the lights on mine are exceptionally dim too! @Unision1 This particular model came from Hattons and cost £70 something. Well worth the price.
£70 😊 well before things went crazy 😢
@APOTwixx the score did take the lights into account. There was no way it could get higher than 8 in my opinion as its lights are seriously dim plus filling an entire unit with a motor is a bit silly.
I wish somewone would make the class 357 new c2c livery! That would be cool!
your great. the best person to talk to on model trains
I've got one and I love it I know its a disapointment about the seats in the middle carriage but it is a nice model and really nice detail to!
Definatly is. I sometimes see super voyagers in Cross livery in Leeds station =)
great vid but be careful with the couplings they can break very easly and the class 158 and 170 have the same couplings as far as i'm aware of if so they could be a DMU Pair but cross country don't own 158s sadly
O.M.G what a great model I have a 170 southwest train livary. The coupling is very strange!!!!! :)
Bombardier is Canadian and they make wonderful trains!
@agachocho a big launch is being planned for Easter - with a competition too.
They've done a variety of liveries, XC, SWT, LM and One Anglia.
the class 170 is in greater anglia livery aswell i have seen this exact train for real aswell when i was train spotting one day
yes it really is a fantastic model they really do have superb detail especially on the led electric display. please could you review the BR Blue class 25.
Excellent video and purchase! She's a beauty!
I must say I love your sense of humour! :D
@Willowfs4472 the rating did take into account the lights. I just edited it with the lights appearing at the end.
the class 220 in XC Is just as detailed i recommend that to you !!
@LukeCA18 the layout is undergoing major changes as I experiment with track designs - hence no blu-tack.
The 170 owes much of it's design to the Class 166, part of the design being copied were in fact the bogies, hence why Bachmann have suited reality and used the same bogies for each unit - because they are the same bogies.
It does. If you blow into one of the grilles on the top you will see a plastic fan spinning :)
I am not sue if your aware of this or want to do this but there are actually two way's to connect make them DCC. First way you could use female and male micro plugs between the cars. the IC82 website will reveal all when it launches tomorrow.
I have this train in the same livery and I found that the wheels get dirty very quickly. And if you look in coach B there are seats - except there's only 8 of them.
@5786Dan I guess it does kinda negate the need for DCC sound lol
@hornbymasterjosh123 The fans on top are not powered but are loose spinning. But even the loose spinning fans are a nice touch!
I've rode them trains many times, I've been to Birmingham on one from Nottingham, and also to Cardiff. I've also ridden a 170 for London Midland from Birmingham to Shrewsbury.
Joe Thorpe
She sounds very realistic besides looking stunning
I was going to get on in FGW but I doesn't fit in with my layout very well, but it is a brilliant DMU.
Good review. When I first watched this review I really wanted it and now I have got that set.
one train id like to see again which ive lost is the queen of scotts .. such a nice train
The 170 could also do with being a bit closer coupled, as there seems to be a longer gap between cars than on bachmann's Voyager 221
@toffie702 haha yes the layout is undergoing a bit of a re-design at the mo so no blu-tack for a wee while.
There is light on either end of the class 170 Turbostar cross country i bought 1 a few month ago.
@EastCoastHST1 I'll not be in any rush to as it runs on the East cost and my layouts are currently based on the Western region.
Very beautiful model!
local model shops - of which there are plenty!
i agree you should me the advert man!!!!! another great video! thankyou
I have heard there are a lot of them operating up in Scotland, yes!
the class 170 use to run between derby and london with midland mainline in the early 00s
this layout is just for fun and reviews - it's not my proper layout.
DCCing this train is gonna be a project in itself!
@Xantec not sure to be honest - not opened her up yet.
@foxcell they are indeed nice. I do recommend them!
Great vid! That is one smart Class 170, they look great in the Cross Country livery, and runs extremely smooth =)
there are special couplers you can by for dmu/emus to couple up with
That class 170 is awesome i really want one.
Yes they do have it in scotrail livery
Great video, i really like that train. So there is no room to put a chip inside is.
@hornbymanzpc to be honest I think it's impossible to tell for sure but there's a very good chance.
@SuperJimjoe there are no fans on top - just grilles.
@InterCity82
may be worth cracking her open, most of the ones i have seen are twin car sets.
its similar to the Chiltern Railways livery but its a class 168/1 and that hard to get hold of and it lights up with the Chiltern Railways one.
@hornbymanzpc the layout is being edited slightly hence no bl-tack at the mo
Fantastic video and the class 170 is very beautiful.
@coolibahrail Yeah, but these new ones are great. You are talking about the old rusty ones. For new DMUs They are great.
I shall be doing so when the /2 version comes out later this year.
hey mr ic82 if your going to hattons got them for 75 pounds now the class 220 cross country nice model
@InterCity82 Yes please get it.....At ehattons its now £74 ? I got it from there for £89 so there has been a drop in price :)
Well let's put it this way, I think it's the best we have for the moment. But maybe a re-design is due soon?
No
@CavanRail001 haha thanks for the comment!
may i sugest changing the bulbs for led's they will probably be a lot brighter and i think the 220 and 221 has bulbs aswell
very fine detail
@Xantec but the 170 I went on was definitely a 3-car set.
LOL thanks for the kind feedback!
Cool, i always enjoy your reviews.
I wish somebody would make the 377, Love that EMU, look great in southern livery.
I'm pretty sure the Brighton mainline is the only mainline without it's more common train modeled.
Great review
It does have seats with fly wheel motor on the second unit. If you look closely on the instructions, it does have one.
The class 170 doesnt tilt I have seen the london midland and went on to Shrewsbury.
just for fun you should do a review on the hornby thomas its a really good model in my opinion!
