Every summer for 1970 to 1977 my mum and dad took me on holiday to the west country. Dad being a train driver on the London to Brighton always got these rides on a free pass. We always arrived at Paddington earlier and my Dad and i went to the front of the train to see what diesel we had, my mum always thought we miss the train. It was always a Western and I have kept my log I saw 21 in all many were already within drawn by the mid 1970's. In 1977 we rushed to the front to be greeted by a Class 50 instead of the iconic Class 52. They were all lined up at Swindon awaiting the breakers torch, thankfully many were saved and still run today on rail tours etc.
Another brilliant review Will, and I have to say I was absolutely blown away by that shot of the Western screaming over the level crossing at 26:05 - the sound was incredible!
Have to say for me it would be the claret red, as it would go nicely with a set of Bachmann maroon mk1s. The green is nice, although to me looks a bit military! But of course there is also the later rail blue with yellow ends, which would look striking with a set of blue/grey mk1s - I'd say grab a beer, put your feet up and watch some videos of the real thing, and see which one really stands out and captures the imagination! :)
Really love the slotted valance for the coupler, Dapol have done well to maintain the correct look of the loco doing that. Even better that you can change them! Dapol and Heljan, sure know how to do boxes as well don't they! Enjoyed the lesson on the background of the loco too.
Hi! First of all, I have to say that you make a fantastic job and I really spent a good time watching all your videos! I discover the british Railways with "Train simulator Railworks" and I LOOOOOOVe to drive your smelly and noisy diesel engines , they are fantastic! I'm from Belgium, and in the continent people focus on german, french and of course belgian railways, really stunning models indeed with a lot a details, but so expensive that often we can't afford ! It's really nice to discover all the models in your videos, and when you open the boxes, the pleasure you have to just look and discover all the details....... Like all the train lovers.... With the eyes of a child.... Thank you for sharing your passion... Regards !!!! I hope my english is good enough, my native language is french... sorry for
InterCity82 . I see someone getting a class 52 for their candy railway in the near future. Maybe you can pull a whole bag of m&m's around the office in the next video
Another brilliant Video InterCity82 . in the IC82 Series 5 Series. Well done. I really enjoyed this Video watching you Review the Dapol Class 52. This was a really good Review and I believe this the first Dapol Locomotive you have Reviewed as well, so well done on that InterCity82 .. I am now looking forward to watching the next IC82 Series 5 Review and other future Videos coming up in your other Series.
That looks a really great model and obviously runs well. I would like to see a video of it running fully chipped with sound, maybe even on your layout that you keep dropping hints about. I reckon that would be really good!
Now if only there was a way to add the diesel fumes... Anyway a great review yet again! Just one quick question when will the next LEGO video be up if your making one?
I have their class 22 & it's a beautiful model. The western region hydraulics are the class 14 "Teddy Bears" (swindon built), class 22 "Baby Warships" (North British), Class 35 "Hymeks" (Swindon), Class 41 "Warships" (they were Co-Cos built by North British), class 42 "Warships" (built at Swindon with Maybach engines), Class 43 "Warships" (bodies almost identical to the 42s only built by North British & fitted with MAN engines I beleive) & the Class 52 "Westerns" which were the western region's equivalent to the Deltics on the eastern region. Though they were retired in the seventies because British Rail felt the need to standardise to diesel electric. Cracking review man
Stunning loco, nice review! Cheltenham Model Centre are producing a LM edition 'Western Champion', might get one now if seen this! There will also be 2 Westerns @ the WSR this weekend, can't wait! great vid, thanks for putting it together :)
Great review & a stunning Western there! I have a Hornby one which I was very lucky to get hold of as Hornby discontinued them fair few years ago, love the look of theses fairly new Dapol ones :)
What do you think of the Desert Sand livery? Good thing there's the option to fit two couplers. If you couldn't fit two couplers that'd be rubbish because these were designed IRL to /not/ need a turntable
When you said to take the class 43 to the shop. It was just a rubbish controller! Watch out for my review. It will be on the 13th June. The day you do your review. Hey what are you doing a review on?
Will great review and a great loco. I think you missed another pack of bits which was in the box out of the review. I thought I saw some etched name plates in a little bag just as you moved the plastic away from camera. Guessing that's what those dot marks are on both sides of the loco do they mark the nameplate position ?
Yup! Some etched name and number plates. They're for its original owner to put on. I would've shown them in the review had I noticed them. It just goes to prove how amazing that box really was/is! So much stuff you miss bits! haha
Western - my favourite diesel loco, pipping the 50 to the post. Fantastic loco, fantastic model. Incidentally, the Western was styled so that the body sides matched the Mk 1 coaching stock profile at that time.
InterCity82 . They often made it as far as Birmingham and Fishguard in Wales too. I noticed the cab lights. Imagine it chipped and with sound! Stunning model, stunning real-life loco.
No Callum they ran on the Western Region of British Railways 1962-77 the area they covered was the west of England London Paddington-to-Cornwall main-line also the Western Region line through Wolverhampton and they also worked in South Wales.
Diesel-electric heathen , repaireth thy ways ! Geteth thou down to the West Somerset Railway on a weekend when they are playing the diesel-hydraulic maybach music ,,,, you`re just gonna love it after this !!!!
There is a small mistake in your video - The Class 66 and the Class 52 'Western' have the same Route Availability, which is an RA of 7. So while the 52 is actually lighter, its axle load is in the same classification as the Class 66, so the Class 52 would be restricted to same lines as the Class 66. In the video you mention the Class 52 could go anywhere, that is not correct.
Another great opening. One small point. I assume the name & number of the loco is in the spare pack. It would have been nice to have seen them being fitting. Perhaps in a subsequent video? Many thanks Eddie
When I filmed the review I failed to notice them! But yes there is a bag of etched metal name and number plates. I'll try to include it in a running video.
InterCity82 . That would be great. I bought an old Britannia model some time back & found the paper nameplates damaged. I loved the engine so much I recently bought a couple of etched nameplates but I'm a little bit nervous about replacing one with the other. I'd be grateful (& I'm sure others would feel the same) if you could find time to give some guidance. Many thanks Ed
halothewynd1 There are companies that specialise in that sort of thing. Would it help if I did a video on removing and fitting name and number plates to locos?
InterCity82 . Thanks for getting back Will. Yes it would be very useful if you could! I can find very little on You tube offering any help on this subject.
That's a great model there Will. I am getting one at the weekend :). I will be making a comeback with my reviews this month but the test runs will be different because I have no layout and life has propelled my back to square one :(. Ah well, I should be getting one the day after of my birthday :). Oh and Will, when are you going to review a Hornby Class 60 mate? You don't know what you are missing buddy. I could lend you one of mind if you like :). Did you want one of my Code 3's or a factory issue state one? As I have modded a few of my examples :). Ash.
InterCity82 . Will, Trust me buddy, they are a cracking model and did you know that the Hornby Class 60 won the gold award for being the best OO gauge modern image locomotive model from 2006-2009 :). If you wanted the Hornby 60007 in the DB Schenker red. Hornby now has them back in stock as the first batch sold out in 2013 on mostly pre-orders alone. Talking of which, not sure if you have an airbrush kit or have attempted to respray any model trains, but if you ever fancied a Colas Rail version, you could always make a model of 60087 ;). Ash.
Hey will when is the next video. When can we see the proper layout. And were is it based on. I love what you've done for charity. I too in fact have autism. Only ADHD though. Is your hair still red and blue? Thanks. Callum Hayne.
Will! I have just brought a class 43 intercity BUT! It does not work? It has been used? What do I do! It is very in portent. It is for my birthday! My birthday on 12 June! Does it need to be serviced? WHAT DO I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

InterCity82 . But I am. I dont mean "I know this on because I went on it", I mean, have a look at it and say what you like of the detail, etc. P.S The Class 375, 376, 377, 378, 379 & another turbostar-looking train are Electrostars.Go to the the south of Britain because you'll see at least 2. great review Will I have the Dapol N gauge Class 52 western D1038 Western Sovereign in BR green they be good on your mini N Gauge on a M&M sweet express ;-D

Wow! Nice locomotive I wasn't so sure on Dapol before this video but I have changed my mind. Great review as usual.
Another brilliant review Will, and I have to say I was absolutely blown away by that shot of the Western screaming over the level crossing at 26:05 - the sound was incredible!
haha it is a good model - I shall definitely have to get one - it's just a question of which colour to get it in.
Have to say for me it would be the claret red, as it would go nicely with a set of Bachmann maroon mk1s. The green is nice, although to me looks a bit military! Excellent review of a great diesel loco.
Excellent i worked the last western from Birmingham to Sheffield in 1977 good days gone forever.
Really love the slotted valance for the coupler, Dapol have done well to maintain the correct look of the loco doing that. Even better that you can change them! Dapol and Heljan, sure know how to do boxes as well don't they! Enjoyed the lesson on the background of the loco too.
Thanks for the comment!
Wonderful review as usual, brilliant locomotive! Thanks!
Ken.
Thanks for the comment!

Wizzo!!!!!!!! best loco irl ever!, but then again i dont have a favourite :D
Love it, what a review, and what a model! The way it handled those 12 coaches makes me wonder how many it could pull...
Many, many more. Positive.
Wow, looks fantastic, they do them in n gauge too, will have to get one!
Haha - oh gosh, you shouldn't have told me that!
InterCity82 . I see someone getting a class 52 for their candy railway in the near future. Maybe you can pull a whole bag of m&m's around the office in the next video
Fantastic review. I will definitely have to look into getting one. Thanks for the review!

Another brilliant Video InterCity82 . in the IC82 Series 5 Series. Well done. I really enjoyed this Video watching you Review the Dapol Class 52. Great review will have been waiting for this engine on your channel since I saw the locomotive in trainstation
Thanks for the comment!
Now if only there was a way to add the diesel fumes... Anyway a great review yet again! Just one quick question when will the next LEGO video be up if your making one?
If you're? I am. And it'll be the summer probably.
Great review, looks ace! Another one for the 'list'! LOL Cheers, Jack
haha thanks for the comment! (Apologies to your bank manager)
Hehe, he hates me now :P lol
i love the sound a train makes going over a crossing
Haha me too! That's why I leave it in there.
cool

Very nice! Have you ever heard about the brand "Jouef" ? It's a French OO model train brand! It makes really great trains!!
Great review & a stunning Western there! I have a Hornby one which I was very lucky to get hold of as Hornby discontinued them fair few years ago, love the look of theses fairly new Dapol ones :)

I did not know that! Thanks for the comment!
InterCity82 . They often made it as far as Birmingham and Fishguard in Wales too. I noticed the cab lights. Imagine it chipped and with sound! Stunning model, stunning real-life loco.
+MisterHampshire They also made it to Chester from Paddington until 1967.
18:40 onwards at 0.5 speed - classic!
L Clowes what about it
I've got one of these from the GCR model event last weekend for £75 cos they only had a few left really lovely locomotive
Those 52's are brill. I have a few.
Fantastic review well done.
Thanks!
Good review I think I'll get one now, also I hope Dapol bring out a Warship model as this would be cool
Does the 52 use a hydraulic pump to create pressure which drove the wheels or use two fans in a oil bath with a gear box on the other side?
Amazing review, is a warship on your list?
I quite like the class 52 western actually. Did they run on the east coast mainline ?
No Callum they ran on the Western Region of British Railways 1962-77 the area they covered was the west of England London Paddington-to-Cornwall main-line also the Western Region line through Wolverhampton and they also worked in South Wales.

Hi I'm a subscriber from the Philippines and I like trains.
Wow! Hello and welcome :)
Love the Westerns - recently used by GBRf for runs on the Midland Mainline D1015 Western Champion '4E10 Wellingborough - Scunthorpe' 06.11.2013
Stunning model
when you mentioned cars working like a locomotive I immediately thought of Geoff from Top Gear XD lol
hahaha!
Do you plan to review a Dapol class 22, I don't whether to go for one or a heljan baby deltic?
There is a small mistake in your video - The Class 66 and the Class 52 'Western' have the same Route Availability, which is an RA of 7. Question, Do the sidings work or do you just use them for storing locomotives?
Another great opening. One small point. I assume the name & number of the loco is in the spare pack. It would have been nice to have seen them being fitting. Perhaps in a subsequent video? Many thanks Eddie

Hi Will, the row of dots on the side of the loco is where the Nameplate goes, which I think is provided?
Yup! You are right! I shall do a follow-up vid!
Brilliant thanks for the info :-)
Could you in future video's inform when they are dcc ready what chips they take at all??, would be great like you pointed out 21 pin in this one
The start of every review features a card that shows whether the chip is DCC or not and if it is what chip it takes.
I love this locomotive
Spot on Will
COOL.
Ash.
Haha! Thanks for the comment Ash! Always a pleasure to read. I KNOW I KONW - Got to do a Class 60! Apparently they're quite good? ;)
InterCity82 .
Will, Trust me buddy, they are a cracking model and did you know that the Hornby Class 60 won the gold award for being the best OO gauge modern image locomotive model from 2006-2009 :). When I was a kid I used to get the Warships and Westerns mixed up too.
Will what lubricant do you use on your locomotives. Can you give me a link to the website please. Thanks.
I use one by Peco called Power Lube.
Hey will when is the next video. When can we see the proper layout. And were is it based on. I love what you've done for charity. I too in fact have autism. Only ADHD though. Is your hair still red and blue? Thanks. Callum Hayne.
You should have asked me about Western information chief, one of my favourite locos.
I had no idea!
Hi will have you tried the warships by bachman there fantastic I got mine in the Torbay express train set
Keep it up doing great.
Could you do a review of Tornado?? I've done one and as much as I like the western it's not my period or area.
wow will absolutely amazing review so smooth please look in your inbox
Thanks for the comment - will do.
Will! I have just brought a class 43 intercity BUT! It does not work? It has been used? What do I do! It is very in portent. It is for my birthday! My birthday on 12 June! Does it need to be serviced?
WHAT DO I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there a local model shop you could take it to? They could take a look at it for you.
I prefer the class 40. Still a top notch vid, Great work!
lol well yeah I mean I still prefer the Class 58 haha but there's no argument about the quality of this model from Dapol. The standard is excellent.
Once you get your N gauge layout sorted, will you be doing N reviews too Will? :D
Brilliant!!
Oh & I was exactly the same the wheels lol, always thought they were 4 wheel bogies ;)
Haven't seen that class 60 before. Something for the 'proper' layout?
Very eagle eyed! It features in several upcoming vids.
Hello IC82, I live in Texas, United States and was wondering if your knew of any good Websites I could buy Hornby trains from and not have to pay the overseas shopping costs?
Many Thanks
Erm the best i can recommend at the moment is to buy from shops like Hattons and Trident Trains who are more than happy to mail overseas. The prices are reasonable to start with so the shipping costs are barely noticeable. I might have to have words with Hornby about setting up a distribution centre in the U.S.! haha
InterCity82 . Thank you. Looked at the website and found it very convenient. Will consider buying from them. Thanks, Dylan.

Please could you review the Class 375 by Hornby. Or was it Bachmann?
Not familiar with that one I'm afraid.
They look like that 455 you have. If you cant review any of these ( excluding Class 376, 377, 378, 379 ( The Class 171 is 50/50 Electrostar since theycan connect. ) ). The Class 171 does the Ashford International to Brighton route via Rye, Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne & Lewes. The 375 is in SouthEastern livery.
The 376 is also in SouthEastern livery.
The 377 is in First Capital Connect livery, Southern livery & will be in SouthEastern livery when First Capital Connect loses the Thameslink contract.
The 378 is London OverGroung's stock ( apart from the 172 which, in London Midland livery has a gangway at both ends ).
The 379 is in Greater Anglia livery.

the red and blue wires are for making tea in the engine room XD
Class 41 / 42 / 43 / 53 / 55 also had twin engines. The latter two were diesel electric.
The red and blue pipes underneath are as the prototype.
Should i do a loco fleet video
I have 33 locos
It's funny how you compared the class 52 to a class 66 as westerns had the Influence for them. I once watched a video that said when foster yeoman ordered their class 59s, they wanted them based on the westerns design, and we all know that 66 are like 59s but more powerful.

Could you do a review of the br standard 5mt class by bachmann
just ordered Western Explorer to go with Met Bo-Bo #8 and Class 05 D2600.
Did it not come with any name or number plates?
It came with a sheet of etched metal name and number plates but they're for its original owner to put on.
Ok was just wondering, would have been strange if it had not ha, thanks for taking the time to reply cheers.
James
It is very x100000000 good
I'll be getting one of these. Money permitting.
Of course - well there's plenty around and some good deals to be had.
Hey will I have got a class 42 by bachmann there amazing you can get one in a set
nice william you could put the name plates on if you want to if you dont want to i dont mind
Can you run OO scale trains on an oh scale track?
HO scale yes, O scale no.
I really would like to get one of these but the blunders with the 73 and now the 68 has really put me off.
uk model trains are awsome :)
Do the fans turn?
No
could you do a review of the Hornby class 56 in colas livery pls
I've done a review of the Hornby Class 56 already. It's not in Colas livery but the model is exactly the same.
cool aye
nice looking locomotive Will. :) Great video too. :) How can you afford all these trains though? I'm surprised you're borrowing and didn't buy it :P
haha - this is on loan to me from Gareth Peate - and much appreciated it is too! I will get one myself VERY soon.
good. you need something like this in your collection
will can you do a review of the class 66 in colas rail livery please
I've already done a review of the Class 66, in EWS livery. The livery might be different but the loco underneath is exactly the same.
Please do a class 42 Diesel Warship! Please?
