  • Testing the ability of my portable inverter generator to charge the R1T. Cliff notes - it works but is just as slow as any other level 1 charging.
The generator is a Pulsar 2300 watt inverter generator, starting wattage of 2300 watts, running wattage of 1800 watts and rated for a six hour run time at half load. The fuel tank is listed at 1.18 gallons and I was able to put 1.1 gallons into it at the gas station.
The neutral bonding plug is required because most portable generators have a floating or open ground which the portable charger will see and not allow it to charge. The plug connects the neutral and ground pins and allows the charger to work.
Charge rate should have been 1.44kW (120v at 12amps) however the total charge delivered in 3 hours 21 minutes shows at 3.8kWh or an average of about 1.15kW.

Only reason I'd use a 120V generator to charge an EV is as a reason to empty the gas tank for storage.
Or super super screwed and cannot get towed.

Pretty much a last resort for sure.
