Laura and Aaron, if you read this , please know that I have been with you guys close to the beginning of RUclips. I’m the same age as Laura and I never knew I loved plants as much as I do. When I bought my house 4 years ago, I was so scared to tackle the garden. Laura you gave me the confidence to just do it. If you don’t love it, get rid of it. I have learned how to start seeds properly, care for plants , and just love my hands in the dirt. You were able to make your passion into your job and I am so proud of the success of GA. You all deserve all you have and what is coming. You weren’t just handed this channel and followers. You guys have worked your a$$ off. ( sorry) With all that said, you already knew that the negative would be out here bc of price, but that is just a small part of us. All of us from the beginning know this is a dream coming true, and if you cannot be happy for people’s dreams coming true, that’s says a lot about you. I love dreaming with you, Laura, and cannot be more happy for you. Thank you for all you guys do!

I’m a teacher first and a gardener second, but having a greenhouse has def changed my gardening game. For those of you in the market, I have the Harbor Freight 10x12. It was less than $1,000, easy to set up, and if you anchor it with 4x4 beams on a gravel foundation, it can withstand 50-60 mph wind (maybe more but I’m not sure after that). There are lots of set-up videos out there too. It’s big enough that I have plenty of shelves, a potting table, room for my tools, and even a comfy chair to sit and watch my plants. Yes, you know we all do it sometimes lol...

I am loving it. And I’m thinking that you may feel the same as I. It was a labor of love and means so much to me.

    Bianca

    • @pansepot1490
      @pansepot1490 3 года назад +5

I am sure a good slice of the price is due to the cost of shipping something that big from almost the other side of the globe. I don’t know how they will manage with the assembly. Usually it’s included in the price and done by the manufacturer’s staff or their contractors.
Definitely worth while looking into US made greenhouses before ordering from abroad.

When we had doors and windows replaced my husband used the old ones to build a small half “greenhouse” that we heat with a space heater. There is storage built onto the north side. It’s far from perfect and very homemade looking but we live in the country and have property so it fits right in. It serves our needs, but we do wish it was larger! As soon as you have a structure like this you will invent reasons to use it, so the lesson is always to go big if you can.

You say you don't want to use the new greenhouse for production, and that's exciting. Using it as a conservatory for tender plants and a retreat for yourself and family will be a wonderful use, and we can't wait to see how you furnish and decorate it. A chandelier will be incredible, especially viewed from outside at night, and a table and chairs for dining or relaxing, and benches tucked into shady nooks ... oh my, can't wait! I got the 6x8.5 Harbor Freight greenhouse for $200 2 years ago. It has 2 vent windows on top and works great! I put a shade cloth over it in summer. Its small but can fit a lot of seed trays in there and while I haven't utilized it as much as I thought, this year will be different. I plan to heat it in March and get as many seeds as I can in there. It's a permanent structure and has held up very well in high wind and snow and ice.

Sorry if this is a downer but I wanted to share my research on the Palram Greenhouses. I came very close to buying one this past month and was so excited about getting one, so excited. After really reading lots and lots of reviews over more than 2 months, I opted out as they do not hold up under wind at all. They are rated for up to 35 mph winds and this is with the tie downs. I saw horrible pictures of the greenhouse after a rain storm and they were either twisted up, panels blown out or in pieces scattered over the yard. I have had up to 80 mph last year so I couldn't justify the expense with such poor review ratings overall from every site I looked at including Gardener Supply site with a rating of 1 star. I am so bummed but with wood prices what they are now I won't be having a greenhouse in my backyard this year. Again sorry for the downer but just wanted to share so people know to do their research before making a purchase.

I have used two different greenhouses up here in North Dakota. One was the stand up zip up kind which I suggest despite the open door and or window features that one should also use a small fan of sorts. We had plant issues due to too much humidity. The other us a 7X8 pelram with hard sides and peaked roof. We have lost the window during 45 mile an hour straight line winds but easily put back into place. I have tried to figure out how to use it to start seedlings but we are just too cold. Used mainly April through November and, on a warmer winter day I sit in it with coffee and dream of spring. I am looking forward to watching your dream unfold. Thank you.

My husband built my last greenhouse and when we moved I really missed it. It gave us an idea of what we would like on our new green house. We have been looking at the Hartley collection for quite a while and each time I flipped through their catalogs I would hum and ooh over the Victorian Grand Manor. To my surprise it was delivered 3 days before Christmas on multiple pallets. Due to the size we had to get building permits. My husband mapped the area before purchasing. My son did a beautiful concrete walkway from our house to the greenhouse at our old house and I am so excited he volunteered to help with the foundation and walkway on this new one. I also wanted to mention that my husband said the customer service was great about answering all his questions and concerns, they are very knowledgeable...He spent quite a bit of time back and forth on the phone...(I thought they were work calls) We will be starting the foundation this spring due to our weather. We are hiring a plumber and electrician to help on that part of it. I think my hubby will be happy to have the garage back...the last two winters I have filled it with plants and used grow lights and fans and we have been filling lots of milk jugs to water them ....which has been a pain and both winters still lost some plants as it has been hard to regulate the temperature. I am so excited to get this project started, a little nervous...hoping all will go smoothly.

I have a FlowerHouse pop up greenhouse that is 5x5x6.5. It’s been great. The whole thing folds down into like a 3’ circle that fits in a bag. I got some folding shelves that fit well inside, and a greenhouse heater that keeps it warmer in there. I don’t have space inside for all my seed starting. And I’m so glad I can have this space outside and then it goes down to almost nothing to be stored. Love it.

I have a small 8x10 greenhouse, I use it in the early spring to hold plants I’ve started in my potting shed before I can plant them out. I use a small heater to keep greenhouse around 40 degrees. I use it in the summer by taking the door off and use it for drying my beans onions and garlic. I hang shade cloth during the summer and it has an automatic vent opener. I live in a high wind area ( Columbia River gorge ) so we used mobile home tie downs and have had no problems. Love all the ideas and options you come up with.

This was so interesting, not to mention useful, because I have just installed my very first unheated greenhouse (cold frame) which is the tiniest wooden one you can get, the Victorian Tall Greenhouse from forestgarden. It’s all I could fit in my garden (142cm x 72cm) but I think I’m honestly as excited about mine as you are about yours 😁😁 I have it all racked and ready to go for my first time seed sowing in March 🥰

Laura, we are enthusiastically watching as the beautiful Hartley botanic becomes a reality. It reminds me so much of the massive Conservatory at Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC. I live about three hours away, and it’s my spring and/or summer destination every year to see the gardens and the conservatory. Of course in 2020 that was not possible and I really missed it. So thank you for all the beautiful plants you show us and your enthusiasm as it brings me great joy! i’m sure I’m just one of many living vicariously through your efforts. My yard is very sloping so I have my own challenges, but I’ve been greatly inspired to do much more planting in pots. Can’t wait to see how your spring bulbs turn out 🌷... I created a mini version all around my yard with pots of tulips after watching you plant up all those containers. Can’t wait for the April show!!

Hi Laura and Aaron! It was nice that you went over some options for different size/cost greenhouses. I have a small walk-in one with the green cover that zips, no vents, that my husband bought for me. It has shelves on both sides and in the back. We put it up on our covered deck and it works really well. It's not heated so need to wait to start seeds until it warms up, but I use it to store plants in until I can put them out in the open. Thank you for sharing!

Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada! I have had a greenhouse and although it served many purposes coming out of a Canadian winter I did find heating the greenhouse even to just keep temperatures above freezing was very cost prohibitive! Even commercial greenhouse operations say the same thing and of course a power outage can destroy everything! So I still ended up with many plants in my basement so that they would survive! I am seriously considering going back to a 6x8 greenhouse but for really about 6-8 weeks in spring so something that sets up and comes down quickly is the objective!

Thanks for posting a story on greenhouses. My family didn't have a lot of money but my dad built a greenhouse out of wood and corrugated fiberglass. Walking in there as a little girl was like walking into another world. Such fond memories.
Well, after years of thinking about it, my greenhouse is being installed this week! It's a 10x20 custom greenhouse kit from Charley's Greenhouses in Mt. Vernon, Washington. It has twinwall polycarbonate sides, a 5-ply polycarbonate roof, powder-coated aluminum frame, a large propane heater with automatic vents, and an exhaust fan and two more vents - all automatic. It's built on an 18" knee wall that matches our house.
There are definitely options between a cold frame and a Hartley, and this is one. I'm so very excited about it!

You might know this already but if not - you can use piping insulation made from polyethylene foam in your poly tunnel to protect the greenhouse plastic. Just put it round the metallic frame. It’s often the heat from the metallic frame that causes hole in the plastic.
