If Apple can sell an Apple TV for $99, then Nest can sell this for $50.

As a Nest Thermostat user, the thought of an ecosystem being developed around it is really appealing. My thermostat is upstairs and likes to go into Auto Away when I'm downstairs and I don't realize it until the room temp is way higher than I'd like so to have a sensor downstairs which also doubles as an intelligent smoke/CO detector is a bonus. I'm kind of surprised they haven't come out with Nest wall outlets to monitor and manage power usage.

Nest is awesome and I love the idea. The price, not my favorite. Granted they're really the first ones on the market doing this. I'll be curious to see how this changes and evolves.

If you have the money they are worth it. Not only as a daily rider but also as a addon. As a 20yr vet firefighter i can see how these would not only be convenient but also save lives. How many times do smoke detectors go dead when people are not home or ... you know "i'll get to it "next week"" .. .
This could not have come at a better time.
    Exciting times.

both the nest thermostat and protect have motion-detection sensors. why not integrate a home-alarm function into the devices? it's connected so it can alert both police and you if there's unexpected movement at home, can disable itself when it recognizes that you are home (from your phone), and you can remotely activate or deactivate it. better yet, create a new thermostat that has a webcam built in as well for video monitoring.

I like the idea of the smoke/carbon monoxide detector in one. I have a few that I got for $45 and runs on only two AA batteries. With both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors it is a good idea to replace them every 5 years. So every 5 years you will throw away $129 for just one of these. Just think about 3-5 units. O.o

thats pretty cool, come to think of it i dont actually have a smoke alarm in my room. be nice if they could make it detect LPG leaks too, we've had a few of them recently with the gas hob being left on but not lit.

This is a premium product. As with many other designed and consumer high-tech premium products it comes with a price.
Compare it with MP3-players: You can either buy a MPman for about 10 € or an Apple iPod Touch for 264 €. They both fulfill their basic function: to play the music you want to play. But one is a basic product (Only containing the basic function) and the other a premium product (That is both designed and comes with the latest features).

I dont know if I totally agree with comments saying why would you need this? Tech is amazing stuff and having a "smoke detector" that can sense dangers before the home catches fire is a great idea. Do I feel it is over priced? Yes, I do. It's sad that majority of the public does not have money to dish out for this. It is also sad that anything with tech is being linked with the gov and privacy. I wish we lived in a world that privacy was respected and tech like this was helping everyone.

It may take 6 batteries, but it lasts for up to 7 years. And you can't criticise it just because it is expensive. It's a great piece of technology which will only get better over time while also coming down in price. In 10 years everyone will have this.

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors aren't $30........
It is way too expensive for 3-5 units (I have 8 detectors in my house)... Never-mind replacing every 7-10 years - which is recommended for normal smoke/co alarms.

i know its rediculous... but i want it... i want a lot of it. although they claim the batteries to last multiple years that still means every 2 years or so ill have an unexpected expense of 54 lith io batteries and the pain of changing them. ill wait till i have a home with wired smoke detectors.... and a bunch of extra cash burning a hole in my pocket.

Well hell may as well stop making Ferrari's because they are to expensive so that makes them pointless... Seriously because something is currently out of your price range doesnt make it a ridiculous product it just makes it a product you cant afford. Most people will be fine with average smoke detectors but Nest will probably argue can you put a price on a safety? Will that 30 dollar detector tell you which room the fire is in so you dont rush into that room while trying to get out?
