I like that it sends an alert to your phone. I have a pet at home and if it goes off on a false alarm or especially if it isn't a false alarm, I'd like to be able to react to that for the sake of living things that are in the house even though I am gone. I remember when I was a kid, our alarm went off for no good reason and our poor dog was under the bed probably for hours trying to escape the incessant blaring of the alarm.

I like the format of this report. More should be made. If/when its release ill get it if I decide to get the nest thermostat, I'll get this. It makes something boring, cool. No one thought these products could be cool and now they are. Support it.

The detector will send an alert to the phone in case you're not home, so you know your shit's on fire and you can call 911. The detector itself will also go off like a normal smoke detector, but will also speak out and tell you there's a fire and the location of the fire so you know to avoid that part of the house/building when trying to get out safely. That part was demonstrated in the video, in case you missed it.

In Finland a smoke detector is in most apartment buildings essential by contract. You must have one. Its interesting to see such different view on them.

With the Nest detector you may also detect people who are not wanted in your home as additional feature? Would be cool, it has all the tech for it! Suddenly 130 bucks is not that expensive anymore...

Since the Nest Protect is not out yet, here is another idea. Add the feature of connecting with nearby homes' Nest Protects. So when there is a fire next door, everyone in the block would know.

That's cool, I wonder if it can measure the dust in the air or air quality? I wish it was able to be sunk into the ceiling.

I like how it tells you to get out , but what if you have family with hearing issues and they can't hear it? I get the answer with the cell phone, but this had me wondering after watching the video.

Smoke detectors are required by law in many nations. Fire frequencies vary by an area's population. Arsonist, smokers, cooks, lightning strikes, even proximity to forests (natural forest fires occur annually in the southwestern states of the U.S.) all can play a role. Awareness drops in divided, mutilevel structures like apartments, offices, hospitals. An alarm provides people a chance to respond to the situation before it gets out of hand.

I installed one and it was clearly a rare miss that came more out of pressure of not wanting to have a single product to sell than making something with detail.

Vapor density of CO is 0.97 which means its slightly lighter than air. This means CO has a high chance of rising to the ceiling... FYI

That really is quite cool and interesting though if there was a fire alarm above my bed that was pulsing green all night I would be annoyed. They might have meant it glows green just once as you switch off the lights or that feature might be toggleable but that would be enough to make me not buy one [assuming I intended to buy one].

  • @themrjones

I want to get one but I an not sure how sensitive the sensors are. I mean I want to know when any trace amounts are present not just at the warning level. We have a propane fork lift at work that smokes and I want to about the crap out of then because they won't fix it.

Well I don't know how it is for the rst of europe but my family has detectors in every room. One time I went outside to cut the lawn but I heard a beeping, so I came inside to see that the toaster had not been switched of, if the detector hadn't been there our house might not stand there anymore. But naturaly it is everyones personal choice wether to buy these or not.

One of my biggest complaints about the Nest is the autoaway feature activates too much because my thermostat is in a hallway that sees little activity. The only feature I like on the Protect is that it reports to my Nest that I'm home. Make small motion sensors that I can pepper throughout the house and you got a deal. I'm not buying 6 Protects to replace my hardwired smoke detectors. Pass!

My uncle had a nice house which was made of bricks, wood, drywall etc. One night he was upstairs sleeping with his two dogs. No fire detector. Some guests were downstairs smoking cigarettes and hanging out. Later the house catches fire. his dogs woke him too late. nobody else was alerted. he jumped out of the window. all other people in the house died of smoke inhalation. Its not the fire that kills mostly....its the SMOKE. If he had a detector those people would be alive.

So, $29 is REALLY enough for you to decide not to protect yoru multi-thousand dollar home with a premium product?
If you bought a MAC, you should have considered a PC, that way you could buy 100 of these. Not dogging either, but this company is becoming revolutionary, and these are brilliant products.

  • @FinallyGotATubeName

Really? I think what they are saying is valid enough. They apparently come from somewhere where smoke detectors are not common why should they know that much about them? Or are you commenting on the paper houses? To that I say it was probably at least slightly a joke.

  • @Tupster

I'm not sure how you can say you are "just fine" without providing statistics, because ultimately, how many people are saved by smoke detectors is something you can observe through statistics, not by asking your friends. Also, it isn't so much the house that burns, but all the stuff in it, and I'm sure that is made out of the same stuff as everybody else.

Unless the fire starts right next to your router; but you might have your router stuck to the roof, of course? Fire proceeds to incinerate your router before it could even supply the Nest fire detector with wireless radio to then broadcast to your phone. Too many points of failure.

  • @Tupster
    @Tupster 11 лет назад

hehe, random statistics... You really should also actually cite the statistics and not just regurgitate them. Anyway, I'm not sure what you are saying. If there are so many fires in the US, should we be using smoke detectors? If your claim is that the houses are tender boxes then smoke detectors are going to save a lot more lives in the meantime to rebuilding all those houses.

  • @whechi

This is justified by being able to know there is a fire at home while you aren't. I have a boxer that is family to me and want this just for him. I would not be able to handle knowing my dog suffered in a fire.

Too many points of failure. There's a reason why high pitched/frequency devices are used today. What if your phone is on silent? No alert. Not to mention hardwired + a 9V battery backup is common place. A smoke detector should not be a feature point of the room; nest seems to think otherwise. As always K.I.S.S.

Wow, 5 minutes of your life. You must be really important where you are if that's all you can spare.
Statistics including house fires which are burned because they are vacant, or because of natural disasters, such as wildfires, aren't relevant.
Yes, houses in america are made of paper, if you consider oak beams paper.
Provide another one-sided statistical analysis for other. In America, we value our lives enough to spend 0.0005% of our income to provide peace of mind over burning to death.

I've purchased the thermostat and I love it and I'm planning on buying 3 of these smoke detectors as soon my wife gives me back my nuts and wallet..
