- I decided it was time to replace all our smoke / fire alarms in the house since I wasn’t very confident about their alarm capabilities and I decided on the latest generation Nest Protect. I learned that they weren’t even connected to each other! If you are in the same situation as me where you are concerned with the safety of your family, this is a video you’ll want to watch. Please feel free to share with your friends.

You all prolly dont care at all but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@Wallace Lawrence instablaster ;)
@Alonso Fisher Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Calm, measured speaking voice without latest rock music background, makes this a pleasant and informative video. Thanks!
Gianni Giumpup thanks for the kind words. Glad it was helpful
Excellent video! Thanks Gary for your slow and easy to follow instructions. I just installed 3 wired Nest detectors in my home... feeling " super safe" now.!
Tallnsf congrats on the upgrade! I still haven’t changed the batteries since I made this video. Still love them!
Excellent instructional video! You introduced and covered very valuable basic fire alarm information. I too was unaware of fire alarm expiration date ranges. I’m choosing Nest 2nd gen smoke detectors to replace all my smoke detectors too. Thank you again!
No...the date on the smoke detector is the manufacturer date. You replace it 10 years from that date, or close to it.
I do fire safety inspections....
Thank you Gary. Clear and concise you have given me the confidence to install two hardwired Nest protects in my home
Thank you for a very informative video! I've gone ahead and ordered mine as well to integrate with my home.
This type of interconnect system is especially useful when occupants are in the bedroom and there is an issue in the kitchen. Most people think that the number one cause of kitchen fires is the stove, which is probably true. However, about 12 years ago, while visiting Southern California, I saw a news story about a disproportionate number of kitchen fires that were caused by a faulty circuit board in the last thing you would expect to start a fire, the dishwasher. Many people go up to bed after starting their dishwasher thinking the only thing that will happen is their dishes will get washed. These wireless link Next detectors can be especially beneficial when you consider that the average time for a normal dishwasher cycle is about 2 hours 30 minutes.
Our dishwasher went up in smoke literally two weeks ago! So happy we were home! Even when we turned it offC a putrid electrical smell with heavy white smoke came from near the control panel. It was about 14 years old.
I got all the answers I needed, in a calm and well done video
Thanks! I just I had and inspection by the city since I’m getting solar, they passed my detector test!
SUCH AN AWESOME AND GREAT REVIEW. REALLY HELPED ME WITH MY PURCHASE, THANK YOU SO MUCH
Good video, pleasure to watch. I have been looking into the nest protect and after watching this i will by purchasing a couple of these.
Thanks (from uk)

your alarms look so cool
Awww, I just noticed my low functioning autistic 14 year old son wrote this comment. Wow. He's very interested in things like this. They do look so cool though! 😉💗

Best video on the Nest, thank you..
Thanks for the feedback!

That date on the old alarm in the kids room is the manufacture date, that smoke alarm diddn’t need replacing, just so you know:)
completely off topic but your voice is so soothing! but i will be buying a nest protect

Thanks Gary....Very helpful.
Hi Gary, Excellent video!
My question: I want a wireless smoke detector that will alert me via Bluetooth or Wifi on my iPhone when I'm away as well as when I'm home. Is this the one? Thanks!
Fun fact: Testing one Protect via the button will, of course, test that Protect. But then it also tests EVERY OTHER ONE IN THE ENTIRE BUILDING.
That's the cool thing!
I searched fire safety and ended up here (I need to set up our house for fire/CO2 alarms). I love the Nest setup you showed. I decided to subscribe. We have a gas stove/oven, any suggestions for detection? Thanks :)
Thanks, my tech channel is Gary Cruz Dot Com
What a great video. Well done!
Thanks!
I'm sorry but I'm an electrician, so I had to mention that 7:45 if the vacuum cleaner was enough to knock the wire nut off your white neutral wire, it wasn't secured tight enough. The small orange wire nuts would work better than yellows here. Perhaps this is the reason for "low battery alert"?
Great video - very helpful - thank you!
Outstanding.
Thanks for this.
Great video. ? Is there a way or guide to square it up. Meaning lined up with the four corners of the wall
Felix Laboy it rotates, so you can easily line them up
Gary Cruz hey thanks for the reply and info.
Great video, thank you, purchasing a 3 pack now! :)
Very informational! Great review!
Great video, thanks for the breakdown. Do they stay constantly lit? I don’t want to have extra light in my bed rooms.
No the lights are temporary
If you kept getting the "low battery" chirp after replicating, chances are it was a lower quality 9V. More costly (name brand, Duracell, Energizer,...) will not cause this issue.
Please tell my husband this 😹 we have the Nest Protects that take 6 batteries EACH. I was looking for this video to see if I can just wire them in. We do have the older ones he mentions in this video, so I feel like we can replace them.
Hi Gary... great video! I now have 8 nests in my duplex. 4 in the apartment and recently 4 in the apartment above that I rent above. I was curious in thinking about these products. Do they speak to each via WiFi? If so what happens when there is a fire 🔥 that would shut down the WiFi in the the home?
I also go back and forth in connecting all of the nests in the 2 apartments. There is one shared one in the first floor hallway. I even called the local fire Marshall and stumped him on the code. Haha. Thanks again!
They have their own mesh network and don't need to be connected to your wifi after establishing a connection. So if the wifi went down, the mesh connected nests will continue to communicate.
this video is hella good!
Best compliment of the day! Thanks! I moved all my tech reviews to my new channel if you want to subscribe there: ruclips.net/channel/UCy7F4iJbilFoq4pPo1tEHxQ
I’m having a hard time finding a smart home fire alarm that will interconnect wired, (NOT wireless) to my existing wired system (not smart). I only want to install 1 smart detector, that will recognize/receive a signal from existing interconnected detectors to alert me. I don’t need to know what room there may be a problem in, I just want one smart detector to tell me if one of the other interconnected alarms are going off..
I would like to switch out all my old, wired smoke detectors with the Nest battery ones. My question - based on your experience, would you have been able to affix the backplate for the battery Nest over the hole the old wired detector leaves in the ceiling?
Sorry for the late reply, the hole for the wires wasn't big, so yes.
for the wired version do you actually need to wire it or you can still use with just the batteries all the time? I don't have any existing wired alarms
Eric Noguchi just get the wireless ones then
Great video!
Thanks! Did you get one? I'll be posting more every day gadget vids on my new channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCy7F4iJbilFoq4pPo1tEHxQ
Hi Gary, may I know if the volume on the Nest Protect adjustable? If yes can you give me a bit more details on volume as my daughter is very sensitive to sound. A sudden loud sound will cause her cramp.
It's an alarm, it needs to be loud.
Great video! Also, any negative to install the battery powered one and close off the wires to keep everything more wireless even though my original one is wired ?
I'd stick with wired since it powers a night light, but I still haven't replaced the lithium batteries in the other ones yet! So far so good!
@@GaryCruz Is the path light only exclusive to the wired version?
Jim Russell no, they all have them.
i have an ionization smoke alarm that has a date of oct 2006 and i have a co alarm that has the date of 1999. do i need to replace them?
If you have to ask. The answer is Yes.
Every 10 years 👍
Question: in my case I want to change one of my 3 wired smoke alarms with nest pritect. Is it possible. Or I would have to replave all three. Those 3 are interconnected. If I change one will it be again law or something.
The nest only communicates with other nest. It will get power, but it doesn’t have an interconnect cable slot.
Solid review, I want these now. Sucks they're so pricey, but if I went with what Simplisafe offers I'd need separate detectors for both. 5 in a house would mean 10 detectors.
The 44 people that down voted this informative video do not seem concerned about their loved ones 🤔
Or they simply didn't like this overpriced product

When I attempted to install the battery nest protect over the ceiling electrical box that held the previous smoke alarm I encountered a problem: the back plate provided with the Nest was too small for the electrical box. Customer support could not provide a solution. Consequently, I returned the product. Needless to say, I was disappointed in the product and support.
They should have told you to get a different mounting plate like this: store.google.com/product/plate_for_thermostat_e?hl=en-US
Hey stupid question but how does the walk way lighting work for the bed rooms? Does it just not work when it’s running on battery?
It works for all the rooms wired or battery. Be sure to use lithium batteries, they last for years. I only changed them once since I made this video!
Carbon is heavier than o2. Normally it needs to be Lower to the ground.
Not true CO is actually slightly lighter than O2 and is considered neutral. It’s location is controlled more by thermal dynamics in the structure and not its density. As a Firefighter who has responded to hundreds of these alarms over 27 years, it’s something you learn very early in your career.
I have a question for you; the Nest smoke alarm how many square feet does it cover? Is it recommended to get one for every room in the house? Thanks
I have one for every room except the kitchen
Awesome and helpful review! It helped me make my decision to purchase the Nest system to replace my failing First Alert system. One note - the music hit long tones that were quite distracting, and was unnecessary with such great content.

GREAT VIDEO. VERY PROFESSIONAL
Thanks for the info kababayan..
Great job! Do you know if the alarm horn sounds: 3 blasts, pause, 3 blasts, pause...until silenced. I believe it’s a UL requirement. The reason I ask is my security system has a module that listens for that 3/pause pattern. Thanks.
Charles Relfe yes
great video!

i plan to buy one at a time up to 6 of them. Will this be a problem to set up?
No, it's easy one you have 1 setup.
I can not buy all Nest protects to replace all my hard wired smoke alarms. So if I buy 3 Nest but have 6 non nest. If the nest goes off, it will now alarm the non Nest alarms?
No. Nest is proprietary- your other alarms will only go off if they detect the smoke
@@GaryCruz in the 4 months I just got all nest
Great presentation Gary but, you may want to turn your background music down some. :)
Hi Eve! Thanks for the feedback, I'll make sure I'll keep it down.
Hello nice vid it helped
Great video. Well Done!
want to buy nest smoke alarm
I will be so grateful if you could turn off your intent router and reconnect it after about 15 minutes and check if it gets reconnect after internet connection comes back, my Nest Indoor Cam does not reconnect in this scenario unless I restart it manually
Sarmad N. Aqrawi I was always restarting my AirPort Extreme router and have had an outage over 20 mins. All my best devices always reconnect. I just replaced them with Google Wifi and didn’t have to reconfigure my Mest devices since I used the same SSID and PW
Gary Cruz really appreciating your kind and quick reply, do you have Nest Indoor Cam? Mine never reconnect if the outage is more than 15 minutes.
Can I just get one of these smoke detectors and run it purely off battery? I currently dont have a 120 volt input on my old detectors
There is a battery version. So yes, you could :)
Great info in there. Thank you.
Brian Sweeney thanks for watching! Did you get one?
Not yet. Seriously thinking about it though. How are yours holding up?
Still loving it. Our last alarm in the family room near the kitchen always had false alarms. Now it doesn't.
Cool. Glad to hear it. Thanks again for all the info. Appreciate it. Have a great day.
It's very simple in my opinion.
Hi you mention at the end that you don’t need a WiFi.
So how do u get alerts if there carbon monoxide to the phone and how it sends signal to the thermostat to shut the boiler off?
No wifi for them to communicate with each other. For mobile alerts you need them connected to your home network and you must have the nest app installed on your phone.
If you have multi units in your house do all need to be hardwired if one is?
earl0520 no
I believe you
Does anyone know if Google is abandoning the Nest products? I bought a
2nd generation Nest Protect (wired) and it is not supported by Google
Home or the newest Google Hubs with video.
I just bought another one (per fire code) and they are still working great!
Can this work with Google or Alexa?
Does it have to be installed on the ceiling? Or can it be mounted on the wall?
marhooba ceiling is always better as smoke rises fast
Can the nest use the interconnect if I don’t want to buy nine of these at once?
Not sure of what you mean. If you have 1 nest, you get app updates via WIFI. When you get another nest, it uses the mesh to communicate with each other. That could be done at any time you add one.
Well done!
You sound like Josh Teder from 6 Month Later Reviews.
Hope that's a good thing
Does the app tell you how much carbon monoxide is in the air?
Not sure, I never received an alert.
@@GaryCruz so maybe not i was hopping it would say a percentage or number like you should see i think it’s 14.9 then anything higher or lower is abnormal
Love it

What if the WiFi goes down, will the alarms all interconnect or not?
Nest has its own mesh. All the alarms are always interconnected regardless if your router is offline.

Good stuff but very expense though
I wish it was cheaper, but it still works today!
0:22 That kidder smoke alarm i saw the same smoke detector that got smashed by a hammer.
I never knew that carbon deoxide is bad.
Carbon Monoxide can be fatal
@@GaryCruz Carbon Monoxide IS fatal. So is Carbon dioxide, but that's another topic.
Carbon Dioxide is dangerous in high levels, as it displaces some oxygen. Carbon monoxide can be deadly in low levels and is very very dangerous.
Gavin Bear we exhale CO2 or Carbon Dioxide. CO or Carbon Monoxide is toxic. It can and will kill you if you are exposed long enough.
0:21 those are the detectors in my house... gotta replace em..
6:23 All 3: 0119201809? (Me next?) and then they all go at the same time. But sound check was screwed up.
itznathyy that is good. It does it one at a time so you can see that the horn and speaker work on all alarms. It would be hard to tell if they all did it at once.
What about cigarette smoking?

It's not that much money when you factor in the safety for lives.
Gary Cruz true but during a pandemic it kinda is but normally no it’s a really good buy.
@@masterofreviews1668 can't argue with that! For me, i like the integration with my smart hub. When the alarm goes off, it talks, and I have set to turn on all the lights in the house.
