Nest Protect Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Review

- Check out my review of the Nest Protect. The Nest Protect is a smoke and carbon monoxide detector. This smart device will give you voice commands as well as the emergency warnings if it detects smoke and carbon monoxide in your home. If the levels are low it'll give you a simple voice warning so you can check it out. The Nest Protect can be operated from your mobile device or the web. So the Next Protect works with iOS or Android on your smartphone or tablet.

I got tired of my smoke detector going off when I cooked and purchased the nest smoke detectors. Thank you nest! My nest smoke detector hadn't gone off when I cook. Worth every penny to not have the smoke detector go off.
Glad you like it. Still loving ours as well. Thanks for the comment.
Thag happend to my first alarm to everytime I was cooking or taking a shower
@@jjgalvao5200 well nest protect have a thing in settings menu so you can turn on for it should not go off of shower at really hot water and i just start to think to buy a Nest protect v2.0 when i start to get a job with good earning in month to pay nest camera at my garage and nest protect smoke dectetor and some security system of Nest to be more safe from thief and people who trying steal my things worth of money from my stuff.
It's just horrible with the tech we have now every goddamn smoke detector does this in some way or another and they haven't fixed it even 9 years later
finally after 2 years i finally come back to this video
Thanks for the great review. Cool to know it will communicate with a nest thermostat. Gonna order some
I have 4 in my house 2 upstairs and two downstairs. 2 are direct wired and 2 battery.
I have one near my gas fireplaces and one near my bedrooms/ kitchen.
I really like if someones burning toast in suite downstairs it warns me with a voice. “ there is smoke in the basement” ....” the smoke is clearing”...”all clear”
No panicking and yes I get warnings on my phone as well. I feel completely safe and worth every penny
Gary
so you can use the wired unit and battery operated units together? If one unit is upstairs you can link it to another one downstairs?
@@redrubeNYC yes and yes

MeadorsMusings Are Those Normal Smoke Alarms Still Good Enough To Protect Your House?
Milo
that is an aweaome system. I want one.
Seems more like an advert than a review. I want to see these things tested until they fail, not a rereading of the website blurb.
A couple points quick... They removed the nest wave feature, and secondly my understanding is you cannot use a Nest Protect Wired version on the same circuit as other ones. I just went with the battery version, over a year now of lots of use (young daughter loves to hit the button) still batteries that it came with.
Juan Castillo Yes, the wave function is gone ---- as for the wired one on the same circuit, I just used the same circuit as the ones I replaced and haven't had any issues.
MeadorsMusings The wave function isn't "gone". It's temporary disabled. They are planning on adding it once it's detecting is more accurate and follows laws.
Haha and what possible reason could you not use multiple Nest devices on the same power circuit? What a laugh comment.
@@MeadorsMusings The wave feature is not completely "gone", like Nickoakz said, it was disabled due to reliability issues. But since then it was replaced with phone silence.
Great Product. Thank you.
Nice review! I am planning on installing one of these in my home and appreciate the information. Thanks!
6 years later, tell me what you think of it
@@jayasmrmore3687 Not completely, but pretty disappointed in the device. I love home automation, but this device really should have lasted much longer for the price I paid for it. It just reported to me that it had to be replaced... Instead of replacing it, I bought one on Amazon.com for about 40.00. I do not recommend this unless you've got money to spare.
@@yakityyob how long did it last
My nest smoke never went off in alarm when my Boiler burnt up
only my very old First Alert(I think it is a GE but i'm not sure) Smoke went off
alexis trinquet ur nest was probably 1.0
Great review thanks
I want those so badly
if smoke comes into the Nest protector the light shows yellow
and after that the light shows red!
i love it!
We have two and they are amazing. Thanks for the comment.
the yellow is a warning that there is smoke and the red indicates an emergency
One additional point you didn't mention: The Nest protect has a 2-year warranty. Many other brands have a 10-year warranty. So, that short warranty may lead to additional costs down the road that would be avoided if you had a different product. Other than the high cost, I think this is a great product.

Using the app, can you activate the alarms if say you see a fire NextDoor and want to warn everyone in the building?
Why did you not demonstrate it and lets us hear it talking all you did was demo the alarm sound that is a common sound that most Smoke Alarms make.
I mean I want all of those NEST thingys forever
If i hear that, i’ll grab my little brother, and the pug, and her pug kids, scream at the top of my lungs to get out the hecking house, and speed out the door faster than the speed of light
Ok
Does it warn you through the google smart speakers when there is an alarm set?
Can you make a new video please
Wished the nest smoke detector was round and not square so one wouldn’t have to worry about lining it up to the walls so it looks straight. You would think the designers who made this would have thought that one through.
Not happy that we cannot use cheaper 3wire alarms on same circuit as nest protects! Is there any version 2 on the way before we commit to these v1 tech?
i have 2 nest protects set up and also have additional cheap alarms in places. The cheap alarms are not hardwired but they will make a loud enough noise to be heard all through the house
You know it's not recommended to interconnect different brand smoke alarms, doing so is against code, so that's why they only sell 2 wire versions. They don't sell standard smoke alarms.
Good video
Max Jerome Thank You.
There's a alarm sound on my review if this helps...mines a real life install hope this helps

am gonna buy it although i still its overpriced and i believe they should've done any more features toake it distinguish against standard ones
Was this detector hardware, why are you talking about batteries?
Is the nest both a carbon monoxide and smoke alarm
yes
I made fire. push messages are on. we tried it with 2 different iphones. we do not receive a message. All nice words but it doesn't work. try it yourself and you will see for yourself.
I had the first generation of the battery powered Nest Protect. Worked fine for about the first year and then started getting a ton of false alarms from it - too many to count actually - and about half of the false alarms happened around 2:00, 3:00, or 4:00 AM. Not a great way to be woken out of a sound sleep! I'm assuming the false alarms were a result of Nest occasionally pushing software updates to the device. Regardless, when you buy a smoke detector that's supposed to actually "protect" you and give you peace-of-mind and it doesn't work properly then it's essentially useless and dangerous. And when a $40 smoke detector outperforms one that costs over a hundred then that's just bad design. In speaking with Nest about the issues they admitted that there was actually nothing they could do to fix it outside of either sending me a new one or providing a partial refund. I took the refund as I had lost all confidence in their product. If it's constantly giving false alarms when there's absolutely no smoke or carbon monoxide then who knows what the hell it would do (or wouldn't do) in the case of a real emergency. I'm assuming that the subsequent generations of the Protect are more reliable but I'm not going to be the one to try them out. Good luck if you've purchased one!
I got one and I never had any issues. Plus the first gen is very buggy and what you said was a common issue, I do strongly recommend you trying out the 2nd gen. Plus My First Alert smoke detector recently stopped working and it never had much features. Before even steam would set off that one but not the Nest. Now that detector has completely stopped working in just 3 years. it is supposed to work for 10 years. I never had any issues since I got my nest.
What I mean by that is my First Alert detector purchased in 2019 would no longer alarm to smoke, even the test button does not sound the alarm. When I put in the batteries the lights still blink but there is no reaction to smoke or even the test button.
Hard pass on the 2nd generation or any others to follow. I lost all confidence in their Nest Protect product and there’s no turning back for me. Besides, my house is fully integrated with Alexa products now and I don’t want to start adding on google products as well. Good luck!
Love it 😶
I wish you can do a vs
Well that's not a good idea to use a cell phone powered smoke alarm, some people out there are still using a landline, some people can't afford cell phones, or some people doesn't like using a cell phone.
My friend has one, I am currently trying to find a way to help him out, it wont stop going off, even when theres no smoke and I have no idea what to tell him to shut it off. been going off for over an hour now.
Why do you even bother commenting that on here? Go to Nest's website for support. Not comments of a RUclips video of the product.
Daniel Yong Did so before hand, also It wasn't mine, he was calling his landlord for help. Figured someone would comment something useful for people having issues in the future.
Do you have 1st gen or 2nd gen?
but y if your houseos on fire y whud you buy 1 for $130
Can somebody answer my question please. I don't have the internet at my place, will this device still work without the internet as a smoke and carbon monoxide detector?
x x it will work it just wont connect to each other or send info to your phone. Not many people dont have wifi now adays its designed for that
