  • CO (carbon monoxide) is a colorless and odorless gas that can kill you. Having a CO alarm is extremely important. Many common house hold appliances such as heating systems, boilers, gas fire places, and cars have to potential to leak CO. In this video, I test different brands and models of CO detectors with actual carbon monoxide to see which one sounds an alarm first. Enjoy the video!

These alarm are designed to only go off between 4 and 15 minutes of being at 400ppm. They are designed this way on PURPOSE. Why? Because they discovered people simply unplug alarms that go off all the time. So the industry agreed on the 4-15 minute and 400ppm standard (and that's what UL tests for). That is to say the alarms should not go off prior to 4 minutes and should not go off later than 15 minutes. All of the alarms showed here passed.

Wikipedia has some good explanation of how the home units measure cumulative over time , not absolute immediate level like smoke alarms ...here is some of it
" The alarm points on carbon monoxide detectors are not a simple alarm level (as in smoke detectors) but are a concentration-time function. At lower concentrations (e.g. 100 parts per million) the detector will not sound an alarm for many tens of minutes. At 400 parts per million (PPM), the alarm will sound within a few minutes. This concentration-time function is intended to mimic the uptake of carbon monoxide in the body while also preventing false alarms due to relatively common sources of carbon monoxide such as cigarette smoke."
They go on to say portable detectors are made that will give an accurate instantaneous reading of actual level.

I tested our Carbon Monoxide Alarm with a car exhaust and then I discovered that it would not activate after leaving it in the exhaust for a long time so then we got a new one and it works. Just a reminder that the test button only tests the alarm part and not the detector, so maybe the alarm works but if the detector isn't working it's pointless.

  • @mikewolf5367

It’s all in the UL code. They’re not allowed to activate before a certain time and at too low a PPM, otherwise they’re considered defective. Weird. It was mentioned in a different RUclips video.

Replace it with a nest protect, nest is better. BTW if it would react so fast to 200ppm it would be against code, he need to start the test at 400ppm or higher and it will wait for no more than 4 mins

I like the Nest Protect. It's well developed and gives verbal warnings before an alarm, which everyone wants when cooking, etc. It also runs on battery, wire, and battery and wire. It also has a full app, which if your out of your house and it goes off, you get notified and you know that somethings happened. Obviously, it's a good detector and it's a good detector to have.

    Winner:nest protect
That’s the only one that has voice saying the location, two stages, wireless interconnect, app download
Edit: Despite being the last one to respond it still works as it is supposed to. It will remain silent for a while even if CO is present, and if CO levels are high for a while the alarm will go off. It is actually a requirement, and that is why even the first one to respond still took a while to do so.
