Who's with me? Here it is 2020 & beyond and this tune still falls fresh on my ears.
Mite early, here in USA Pacific Time, but just the same, much thanks for viewing my MOTELS upload.
Happy "soon" New Year.

Russ Boyes i’m here with you in 2020 and still loving it! !!!!
I'm listening in 2020. I saw The Motels in concert at Coney Island last August 2019 and Martha still sounds great! I got a picture with her and she's a real sweetheart!
April '21..England
2022 also!
It's so hard to believe that it was 38 years ago. Wow.
I know. We have all grown.
Almost feels like 39!
Shush little babies, do not cry over years gone by. Still a musical gleam in my eye for the motels who will bring us into a kinder moment, place & time.
I was 6 years before I was born
39 years now, and i was 12 en 1982. So, I'm not a kid anymore 😅
Getting emotional. I graduated in 1982. This song is like a time capsule
Me,too
😅
This song is 40 years old. And I never get tired of watching and listening to it.
Thank you Bryan...good sir. I hope I did my very best in the syncing up a much cleaner version of their prized album version of "ONLY THE LONELY" and overlaying it over the mono, hissy-sounding TV transmitted version; I "think" I hit the mark. (?) However, I have learned (just recently) that many people absolutely don't like "synchronization jobs", even if the performance is done for television or straight to video on a soundstage, in front of a "live" audience. The world of You Tube is a tricky business; the music & recording business...is a "tricky" business. You do your very best, try your darndest to treat all involved with kindness & full respect, but still...failure happens...even when you never see it, or saw it coming. Sorry to get off on a side issue, but I am fortunate, that you enjoyed this "remaster" job. Thank you Bryan; thank you.

Listening on March 25th 2024. Loved this in 1982 as much as I do now.
As do I...AS DO I...!!!
BolsaChicaRadio
Same!
This song is nothing short of a Masterpiece!
Thank you Frederick. It was quite the audio/video synchronization job putting this "masterpiece" together some 8 years ago, with much older Apple/MAC software, but we did it! Glad to know that YOU enjoyed it.

@@BolsaChicaRadio I've always liked this song! Can still remember when I first saw the video for it on MTV back in the early 80's..Personally speaking'..it's one of the best songs I've ever heard..& it's not even the style or genre of music that I usually listen to! That's how good I think it is!
It sounds just as amazing today as it did back then. Timeless song.
I totally agree with you.
Still listening in 2023 🎸🎷🎹🎶
God, I miss the early 80s sooooo much !!!!
Now I am old, in bed, in pain 24/7
Don't wait, don't hesitate.
Enjoy life while you're young
Miss the 80’s
We all owe one to the 80s for producing so many fine female artists. This is one of the finest.
One word sums up her voice, haunting.
Indeed my friend
No, more like totally feminine
I remember this song...I was 16, new motorcycle, part time job at McDonalds, a few girlfriends, and my Whole Life ahead of me. Life was Wonderful...not a care or concern in the world.
I had it MADE!
Thanks Mom and Dad!
TO: RC. Thank you for the good, positive story about your life. I too worked for McDonald's in 1979, I believe. The Motels came out with this song a good 2 or 3 years later; a great composition. I can't really say my life turned out much better than yours, but as you look back at your past, it's good to know that are some still, who were....and still are...happy & fulfilled with their past experiences & accomplishments.

Dear God...What a beautiful woman with a perfect voice!
Gorgeous woman with a gorgeous voice.. Chiming in, in Feb 2020...
Agreed...April 2021
I'm with ya May 7 2021
I'm 53 and the songs of the 80s were so pure and fun. . . sexy and innocent!
I'm 65. I still love songs from 70"s and 80"s
Still a great song even in 2020
I was 19 when this came out! Loved it the love it now!! I’m 58 urs young! Love ya Martha! Made my 80’s!
Sexy saxophone and Martha kills this song !well done
One of the most hauntingly lovely songs ever! 💖⚘🥰
The late great 80's. When music had melody, power, emotion..My god what happened
Q: What happened?
A: We got old.
Q: The music?
A: It got overly homogenized, completely predictable and churned out like bars of glossed-over, synthetic margarine.

@@3John16 Indeed Johnny, my satiric comment, was just that: "sad sarcasm". Hence you are very right, very mindful and very intuitive about that era. It may have been an an era of extra schlock, excess and flamboyancy...yet still...it was one of THEE most important eras of ALL Pop Music History.
This is so very true.
BCRadio
@@3John16 uhm, half of those genres are hold overs from the 70's.
Martha Davis can sing for me anytime.

So sorry
Holy smoke, perfect looks, perfect voice, perfect song. We've regressed so badly, lol
Nah man, what you talking about? Aren't all the auto-tune songs so much better? Than an actual singer?....sighhhh.......
To My Fellow 80's Teens....The music of TODAY cannot compare to Our Music we were Blessed to listen to during those Years!!

42 yrs ago . Wow
Indeed, as of 2024/2025; 42 years...almost 1/3 of that time, since it's been locked away in The SOLID GOLD vaults, possibly never to be seen again, due to the multitude of copyright leases...this little recreation I molded & re-shaped together, has been here. Thanks for tuning in.

I remember watching this at home. 16 years old and falling in love with Martha Davis😍
Same here. Her voice touched my soul.
The year this beautiful song came out I graduated from high school. Now in this year 2024 I still listen in absolute awe and wonder where 40 plus years have gone, but this song will remain dear to me until my dying day!! 🎶 🎸❤
Great comments, such as yours, made it all worthwhile rendering & uploading this masterpiece of a song, I believe now over 12 years ago.
Thank you for your contribution to this tiny little page, in the big world of You Tube.

@BolsaChicaRadio Your welcome and thank you for your kind words. Music in that time I truly cannot put in many words because it had soul and meaning to it and music today I sadly cannot begin to understand!!
I was a teen in the 80's and it just felt like 1982 was the beginning of the awesome music we had that decade --- this song was all over the radio and I remember it well
Who didn't watch MTV for hours, days, weeks, -months,-when they were new and everybody in the world wanted to make a video for their favorite song?
Blows anything away you hear now. The Golden eighties. Were just that gold
EVEN IN THE YEAR 2020 WITH ALL THE BAD THINGS HAPPENING IN THE U.S., THIS IS STILL AN AWESOME SONG, AND WHAT CAN SAY ABOUT " MARTHA'S VOICE , SIMPLY INCREDIBLE!!! I WILL ALWAYS " LOVE THIS SONG"!!!🎵🎼🎙🎸🎷📻🎶💿😎😍😘🤗😂🤘✌👍💋💘❤💖
Wonderful 80's music. I've always loved this song.
Wished I could go back to this time. Do things a lot different and wouldn't have wished my life away! Now just a 58 year old man with memories.
I am EXACTLY where you are in life right now 'Billy Barrett'; 58 years old this year and really wished things would have turned out much better for me, as I originally planned, but they did not. no SFX BS, no voice assist, etc. Just pure talent..
There will never be a generation of music like the 80s!!!
Never. It defined what modern music is. I dont believe the 50, 60, or 70's did, not to take away from their contributing aspects. 1980's.!!!
What a great sound. The sax, the keyboards and the base just blended perfectly. The vocals are one of a kind.
The guitar-to-sax break is a work of art in itself.
They were truly firing on All cylinders here. 💥 ..and on the fantastic "MISSION OF MERCY", too !! 😃 🥂 🏆
I forgot how awesome this song was. She was a powerful, talented singer. I love it!
Such a beautiful song
Thanks so much for "tuning in", to my little SOLID GOLD editing & remastering job!

Still love this song in 2021. Martha Davis has a dark yet sultry voice.
Very true! Love this song!
I was 13 in 1982 and never will forget when 📺 was something worth watching. Great times of the 80s will be missed.
Martha's voice can melt a heart in a second.
Martha Davis what a fox. Solid Gold was an awesome music show back in the 80s nothing like that today
You're TOTALLY 100% correct, on BOTH the facts you point out! Thank you.
BCRadio
It was before Mtv and it was my favorite Saturday night show that came on free air broadcast ABC !
Same thing as American Bandstand,
Soul Train , and the Midnight Special!
I know Solid Gold looks cheesy looking back now, but back then it was so exciting to see someone you liked appear in the show. They had made it “big”.
Thank you Paul, for your views and ESPECIALLY your insight! So many people who live in today's very "LIVE" & very "ON DEMAND" world, who were not privy to the television programming techniques & style of production of the not too far past, look at those "close yesteryears" of TV entertainment, through a prism that is out of context or rather a trajectory of "TODAY'S" presentation. That's unfortunate. Those who are much younger than you or I, can still barely look at "The Wizard Of Oz", "Gone With The Wind" & perhaps the effect of "Beatlemania", with a pseudo understanding, slight acceptance & give it at least historical value, honor & respect. But go back just a mere "short" 30 to 35 years ago, after the last 20 YEARS of either "American Idol", "The Voice", "America's Got Talent" & the HUGE LIMITLESS PLETHORA of "Reality TV", indeed, SOLID GOLD looks like thee most type of entertainment trickery, mockery & falsehood, ever produced. Yet, if we look at the OVERWHELMING SUCCESS of Dick Clark's "American Bandstand", Don Cornelius' "Soul Train", The Merv Griffin Show and the many other very notable productions that featured the "Then-Today's" most popular acts, singers & pop groups ALL singing & performing in "Lip-Sync" and/or "Playback" fashion and decide to not understand & value the importance of the evolution of television production & presentation, a grave disservice and unworthy rejection is given to the importance of our past, pop TV music culture.
BCRadio
@@BolsaChicaRadio Yes. There is an almost immediate rejection by most of today's young people of anything (i.e., music, movies) more than ten years old. It's very sad.
More than just a song...it's like a short novel, or an art film. Whatever it is, it's a true masterpiece.
Indeed the 80's were super. These guys, Journey, Sting and several others were simply fantastic.
I like to here this song brings back memories Martha Davis sings this very good she has a very good voice

Absolutely 💯
I remember this song playing on the family radio, loud, me an anxious 8 yr old, waiting, for my dad to come pick me up to drop me to school, thinking I'll be late, getting scolded by my mother because I didn't want to eat the breakfast. Every time I hear this song ,takes me back to that time,I can feel every emotion, smell, everything, in all that ,liking this sound.
Now as an adult I don't panic if I'll be late. I always go back to this song when I'm in pain.
NOW! THAT ONE'S QUITE THE STORY...!!!

I miss the 80s....
This song takes me back to that summer when this song came out. Working at an Arco station on a Sunday afternoon. No traffic, hot as balls outside, no a/c in the office. A girl I was dating was on and off again and my heart was aching. I thought we were for sure going to break up. Then she shows up in her car, hands me a note, gives me a quick kiss, then drives away. I opened the note and it said she couldn't live without me. I was on top of the world. Bitter sweet memories as we called it quits a few years later. Good times back then. Good times..........
What an incredibly nostalgic, moving, and awesome song...one of my fav all-time songs of any era and band. Simply amazing!!!!!
I assume one of you had too much gas. "If you say Pull My Finger, one more time, you can pack your shit and stay at a Motel, as far as i'm concerned." said somebody. It's just a theory.

Even though to be a lip‐sync performance on Solid Gold show, listening to this song and watching the Motels brings back a sweet memories. There is no decade like 80s.
Great band and great song
Thanks for uploading it❗
You are quite welcome! Even though indeed, this was done in playback/lip-sync fashion, 99.9% of all performances on SOLID GOLD were done utilizing this form of pre-recorded production. But you have to admit, Martha Davis & the guys in the band, were some of the BEST syncers of the decade!

Perfect guitar and sax solos ...
No auto tune only talent. What a voice ❤.
Indeed, back in 1982, there were ABSOLUTELY no digital softwares that can even come close to simulate what artificial intelligence/voice recognition digital platforms we have today...."To Correct All Things"...but spitting out of the other end, is nothing but synthetically produced, homogenized vocal robotics; I'd say. Digital recording was indeed around in 1982, but still, very much so, in it's development years. Herb Alpert's 1979 #1 song "RISE" was recorded direct to digital on the 3M Digital Machine, that weighed about the same as the Titanic! ABBA's 1981 "THE VISITORS" album was a hybrid of analog basic tracks, moved over to a digital recording multi-track unit. Finally, The Bee Gees "LIVING EYES" album, also from 1981, WAS THE VERY FIRST pop/rock/mainstream album to be printed onto a compact disc, however, for insider promotional purposes only. There was an analog module called the "EVENTIDE HARMONIZER" that had certain pitch bending capabilities that it could perform; mainly for 'effect' purposes. I believe the HARMONIZER was used by Steven Spielberg to create the voice of "lovable alien" in "E.T."
So, thar ya go, a very short, very brief look at the digital world; "Today's" world...to some great misfortune for humankind.

Even Ozzy Osbourne sang on Solid Gold how crazy was that
When music was real
Martha’s voice is magical! In my opinion she’s very underrated and who doesn’t love a saxophone in the song
Haunting gem of a song.
STILL a great song !
Indeed, Marty Jourard on that great sax solo was amazing! As was many in the recordings of the early 80's, when large studios and record companies cared more about taking ample amount of time for proper re-takes and quality assurance...than just the fast, quick & easy 'cut & paste', 'pitch-correcting' recording "techniques" and promotional "front-loading" schemes of today.
I had many great personal email conversations with Mr. Jourard as I was preparing this VHS tape, digital audio remastering job for this very You Tube upload.
He REMEMBERED being there at that SOLID GOLD soundstage taping quite vividly! His only grip? (ha-ha!) ...was that the Lighting Director called a wrong cue out to the lighting mixer, which mistakenly kept his whole face practically in the dark through his whole frickin' :16 second sax solo!!!
But oh well, he and the whole MOTELS band was glad to be a part of that very small piece of SOLID GOLD TV history.
As, was I...

You're SO right, Mr. "Dave From Maine", BolsaChicaRadio here; "ONLY THE LONELY" was ROCKIN' right along with "Back In Black", "We're Not Gonna Take It" & "Come On Feel The Noise"...!!! All four songs were ROCKIN' up the charts with Ghostbuster Blow Torches, that same very ROCK era! (ha!ha!) Just yankin' & rattlin' your cage a bit here Dave to make a funny, at your expense!
Thanks good You Tube brother for tuning into my "Soft Pop/Love Ballad" Channel and getting a good ROCKIN' KICK outta it!
Indeed, "Only The Lonely" was a great song, which accompanied a great & very well produced music-video that year, which did win the "MTV Video Of The Year" for 1982...which I am pretty darn sure, AC/DC, Quiet Riot & Twisted Sister...clearly, did not!
Thanks buddy!

Well said and well put !! :-)
I was born in 71 I had never seen the singer til now. She closely matched my view of her based solely on her voice.
Thanks for watching. If I do some quick math, you were about 10 or 11 when they The Motels performed this on SOLID GOLD. Martha Davis was an incredible singer with a bit of "quirk & sensuality" about her. Her on-stage cosmetics were stunning and her slacks & suit was perfectly styled & pressed. Not so much today, in this era of modern pop entertainment.
