I thought it might burst into flames. 🤣 Good thing it didn't.

I’ve been trying to find out how to do this for months. Thanks for the tip.

I was wondering if you have found a way to use a backing sheet with a scroll?

The roll of art paper I get from Staples is thick enough that I usually don’t need a backing sheet.
But for thinner roll paper, how about a second roll threaded behind the first? Or at least a long piece cut from a roll to serve as a backing sheet.

Cute looking blue Underwood portable. I remember seeing ads about an Underwood "fanfold" typewriter. A cast iron basket is bolted to the back of an Underwood model 5. It is set on a special desk. In the basket. Is this special paper folded first one way and then the other--"fanfold." This was not unlike special dot matrix printer paper used in the. Nineties, except it was absent the perforation holes on the sides seen on the printer paper. Similar paper was set up on billing and account machines, as well as automatic typing equipment.
