I’m always a bit surprised when I renovate a base game build with townies by just how much furniture and clutter are in the homes. Compared to later packs, base game builds are incredibly detailed. I’m NOT saying they’re good or pretty, but they at least have stuff in them and look lived in, to an extent.
As more packs were added, the team realized lower end computers couldnt run the game well with too much clutter and started limiting items. With only the basegame, lower end computers could run it fine with more stuff in the houses.

That totally makes sense. Usually when I renovate them I do get rid of some of the clutter, because it doesn’t make sense for the house or the sim. But it’s just such a striking difference from, say, the builds in Strangerville.
The Pancakes' house is actually one of my favorite EA houses, if not the favorite. The bar is below the sea level, but hey, at least it looks like a real house, functions, and the color/texture choices don't make your eyes bleed.

I broke up their marriage by having Eliza cheat (super realistic of her) and then having Bob marry Penny Pizzaz. They had many kids, just so I could see how the genetics would mix 😄
I named their daughter Buttermilk

the whole look of the original house, including the asymmetry, evokes the New Orleans architecture they were inspired by. the interior...eh, people renovate interiors all the time, don't care as much about that. I love the asymmetry of the exterior, though, it reminds me of a walk I once took through the Garden District
Finallg someone mentioned this. It gave me new orlean vibes from the originals show so I def was freaking out about it when it first came out 😂
I JUST HAD A CHALLENGE IDEA: So basically, make a wheel of a bunch of different aesthetics, and every 5-15 minutes no matter what you are doing, you have to spin the wheel and switch to that aesthetic
(So half of the living room could be like kidcore and the rest like grunge or something 💀)

This has been said before and ill say it again: What about going back to a solid colour build challenge and renovating it by changing the colours of the objects to make it all colorful and not solid, that way you can see how it would look like in a 'normal' pallete or smthn
This is such a good idea that I’m doing this on my next build. Otherwise, I end up doing the entire house in the same color scheme as the exterior. It’s not that I
am afraid of color - I love it! I think I feel confused when I am trying to color scheme the whole house while building custom furniture and building everything and decorating at the same time.

To be honest, I think EVERY Maxis base game house can do with better lighting. And also the ability to use ANY bed or kitchen appliance regardless of its default skill level. Let's be honest; some of the level 10 skill appliances are UG-LEE. Some of the more aesthetic fridges and stoves are only at the bottom of quality production.
The basic/cheapest fridge is my favourite but it always gives bad moodlets :(
@@biancabuscemi9590 Right?? It's not the ugliest one but it's what most people are accustomed to seeing in everyday homes. I personally like the country one - the yellow ones - they're only at 7 quality but they are very inexpensive for their level.

@@biancabuscemi9590 If you're a simmer who likes the gardening aspect it's a great addition. There's even some farming with cows and chickens. I'd say it's a good one.
In my longest played save my main sim is best friends with Eliza. I thought it’d be interesting for her and Bob to have a more dynamic life as my sim’s family had kids etc. so I turned on all options aside from move out for their household for neighborhood stories… visited the Pancakes household for the first time in awhile and to my shock and horror they had THREE babies in bassinets scattered around the house and a child-aged daughter. This is AFTER getting 10+ phone calls from Eliza asking “should we try for baby?” And responding “no it’s not a good idea.” So who knows how many babies they COULD have had if I’d encouraged it!!
This redesign was so welcome because I’ve been so distraught over how to fit additional bedrooms in for the kids. Thought I was going to have to go Harry Potter-style with at least one bed under the stairs 😂

i just renovated this house tuesday night so i could move 5 nicholas cages into it (bob and eliza are long gone bc im in the sixth gen of a legacy). if i would’ve known you were going to do this i would’ve saved myself the headache 😂

I have several questions... but on the other hand, when get famous came out I had Eliza grow a cow plant, killed Bob, drank his life essence, moved to del sol Valley to become an actress, and whenever she started to age she seduced someone into moving in and fed them to the cow plant

Can I ask what's wrong with it not being symmetrical? Maybe it's a Norway thing. But I see much more asymmetrical than perfectly centered houses.

The reno looks amazing. I love how some of us really care about the house's floorplans being functional and close to reality when it doesn't really matter. I try to have closets in nearly every bedroom, a pantry in kitchens, etc. I look forward to eventually getting Cottage Living and Home Decorator to have functional walk-in closets and pantries
I was getting excited about the extra bedroom you were going to add and then you changed your mind. I do agree that floor plan makes it difficult. But I haven't really put that kind of effort into it yet. The biggest thing I did was add walk in closets from the Get Together pack (I add those to all houses). Maybe I'll have to really try sometime.
I added a 3rd floor, which was Bob and Eliza's bedroom, an ensuite and a balcony. The two bottom bedrooms were for their 2 kids in my game, they had a boy and a girl. It actually came out really nice :)
It’s funny when neighborhood stories come out. I never want to turn off adopt in case of any Sims who can’t get pregnant with each other, LGBTQ+ deserves to adopt. However that means literally every household adopts when they’re capable of having kids of their own. In my games, the Pancakes household never adopts. So far they only ever have one kid and get a dog. One time Eliza died a week or two after her kid was born but I made a mistake and had to exit with saving, which sent me back to where I started that morning when I started playing which brought Eliza back to life, I made one of my four children Sims become friends with the Pancake child. And I’m thinking of having my Sims become friends with the new Pancake child in my new save. In another save not many households had time for stories as 8 went on a rampage turning every Sim possible into a vampire, so the Pancakes don’t have a child in that one.
interestingly they can still have babies if they’re LGBTQ! my sims cousin and her wife were both pregnant at the same time and had adopted a kid! the birthed babies considering both sims their mother too so i’m not sure how it works but it does happen
I always thought the Pancake house was supposed to be the house from The Notebook in the sims. It is a white house with blue shutters with a porch for them to paint.
hot take but i actually like eliza more than bob. bob’s slobby and lazy while eliza just likes pretty things and a tidy house. in my head they inherited the house or used eliza’s inheritance money to buy it and eliza as a SAHW has to clean this whole two storey house by her self while her husband works minimum wage

Evert time I renovate the pancake house, I push the back out where the current kitchen is and move the stars back there, and take out the upper balcony that is doing nothing whatsoever in the back. It makes a major difference to move the stairs out of the center of the house.

I’ve been playing a legacy save for months now and I’m on Gen 7the Pancakes great-great granddaughter is still living in the original house with her wife and kids. So I might use this to give them an upgrade.

When I did a "story" makeover for the Pancakes I had Eliza force Bob to split his room and took away from the hall way bathroom to give their son a bedroom

With the decor style categories, the mix-match of the house's furniture works for their characters. It has been a long time since I've messed around with editing the Pancake house, but... Bob seemed to be the one who brought in the contemporary and suburban contemp and Eliza brought in the French Countryside... which led to the interesting combinations of the living areas. I also got the strange feeling that Eliza somewhat looks at Bella Goth as a decor role model only in pink rather than red, but since she cannot afford Queen Anne, she settles for French Countryside. She covets her Princess Cordelia bust and near worships it. Bob... he just wants his kitchen. A nice, contemporary kitchen.

Lmao same. I knew nothing about them when I first started playing but then when I downloaded basemental drugs I saw them on the list you get for choosing dealers in your game and something about them made perfect sense

In my most recent save (on their own) the Pancakes like the color white, Queen Anne, and Island decor. I did not choose any of those. 😅 Needless to say my sim has had some challenges with the decor. But the house definitely looks different!
The windows at the front actually weren't different colours. They are just blue on the outside and white on the inside and you flipped two of them around while changing the size of the room
I'd love to see you do an EA Reno, shell challenge. You cannot touch the existing walls. No making it smaller or more symmetrical. You can add walls inside but have to deal with existing walls. You also have a budget of $20,000. Any walls you delete is a penalty of $1,000. E.g. If you delete a 3 wide section of wall, that's 3 walls and therefore $3,000 removed from your budget.

Challenge suggestion: build a house, but you can't use any white/mostly-white swatches. For anything. Any other colors you want, or slight white accents are fine, but nothing that's mostly or largely white.

Ive been playing generations and just now realized that ive played one of my first families in there lol
ive been trying to make a build with stairs today (stunning and brave, i know) and the roof clipping has been testing me to the point where i just threw my hands in the air and literally screamed "YOU USELESS FUCKING FUCKERS" at the ceiling, praying the sims team heard me..... so the window colour thing does not surprise me, not one bit.

Usually when renovating a house, you don't remove square footage... so removing that dining space for more deck room was not a good plan.
