How to Install a Graphics Card into a Desktop PC

- In this video, I will show you all of the steps in installing/replacing a video card in a desktop computer. Whether you don't have a graphics card in your PC yet and you're wanting to install one, have a graphics card and want to swap it out with a new one, or if you've been using on-board/integrated graphics and are installing a dedicated GPU on top of it, I will cover all three of these situations.
When installing a graphics card on top of an on-board one, generally speaking there are NO additional steps required compared to installing a card when you DON'T have on-board... but that being said, there are some rare occasions when you'll have to either disable the on-board driver in your Device Manager or manually set the GPU to "PCI-e" in your BIOS if, for whatever reason, your OS is just not detecting the new card. Again, this is rare.

Gotta be honest dude, been building a computer for a while and it's nice to get a guide thats funny, fast paced and to the point, and also clear cut and plain to understand for someone who hasn't built computers before, thanks for putting this up, hugely appreciated
The bit about 8 pin breakaway connectors was extremely useful! I almost panicked for a minute.
Same happened to me It is my first build and I was scared of cables this guide helped me
Lmao me 2
Really quality video, man, informative as always and a big improvement in presentation over the older content I feel. I would really like that motherboard install tutorial, didn't forget the poll that time.

Thank you so much for this video! This is my first time upgrading a graphics card and your video is very clear, straightforward, and easy to understand. Love that you put some humor into it as well so it was informational and entertaining!
All I want to say is I came here in advance to getting my 2080 and I had to subscribe because how straight to the point, great instructions and your jokes here in there. Keep up the work I love how you make it so welcoming ❤️
Thank you so much for this! It was my first time upgrading and this video was clear, easy to understand, and helpful! And I could actually see what you were doing. Keep it up.
Well explained and straight to the point, good job mate.
I love your sense of humor and you did great on this video. I have done this many time but I am just now updating to a 2080 super and I always want to be safe. I am an electrical engineer but also in my mid sixties so basically I’m a idiot that doesn’t keep up with changing build functions. I really appreciate this content and look forward to more content laced with humor.
I wish good health and all the best to you and yours!
Thank you so much, sir! And, dude, this PC tech repair/building stuff is absolute child's play compared to legit electrical engineering, don't sweat it! More vids coming up! :)
Oof, I’m sorry to tell but Nvidia just released the 3080 ti for half the price of the 2080
xXShadow Night81Xx that doesn’t surprise me at all. I knew I was an idiot for spending $800 bucks on that 2080 super but the kids say it runs great and while I personally don’t play graphics hungry games (yeah I know I’m old but I enjoy the new Civilization 6 and some realistic simulation games) it works well so far for my grandsons on the stuff they enjoying playing (which are way to insanely fast paced for my reflexes) and I haven’t had any issues like I use to with the Radeon card I had before. I may do another complete build when the grandkids start complaining about having to nerf the graphics settings but maybe this will be ok for now. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it and I honestly hadn’t heard about that new GPU.
I wish good health, happiness and all the best to you and yours!
Wesley Townsend Good to see that you really don’t care about your purchase, atlease you and your family get to have in on the pc, I was thinking about getting an Msi Gpu since they’re pretty cheap, hope your day goes well too!
finally a video getting straight to the point. Not some 20 min video for something so simple
Thanks to this video, i was able to install my new GPU. Thanks, my guy. Very informative video
Thanks Dude, This'll come in handy when I get my hands on my Card.
Dude you should make more videos you are hilarious and very helpful.

I just started building a PC and I stopped because I didn’t know how to put the GPU in the motherboard. Now I watch this video and it fits perfectly I thought it didn’t fit
thank you man this really helped me

Thank you, this was very useful. I have installed GPUs before, but there is nothing wrong with a refresh. Watching other videos where you can't see what the person is doing because they have their camera set up is too far away and its dark, is frustrating.
I had a GTX 670 that would have still been working if a cat didn't decided to pee on on my PC. Got everything cleaned out. GPU lasted for 5 more months and then one night it just stopped working. I open my PC up and my GPU had started eroding. So using integrated at the moment. Luckily my Z97 MB has a strong enough graphics to run some games I play but on medium. Im happy that I will very soon be able to get all my games running again on high/very high graphics! Its been 4 months I have been working with the integrated graphics. Its painful!
My scenario: doesn’t own an computer trying to find where the graphics card is in a computer so I can draw it for a major that I’m late in T-T
Why?
Doesn't seem likely
Thank you so much for this video it helped so much !

This video isn’t really that high of a quality but the explanation is definitely great
Thank you, you are appreciated 💙
Good vid man 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for this. Do you have sound card installation also? You have been very helpful and funny at the same time! Cheers!!!
I don't have a video on that yet but it's not out of possibility! It's basically the same thing as installing a GPU, though. Thanks to you as well!
i respect you using win 7 in 2020 btw thank you so much for a tutorial i hope to upgrade from my 1gb gp soon
I love Windows 7 and never want to get rid of it, but sadly as technology progresses and newer programs and hardware no longer support it, I'll have to upgrade :(

Fuck I like this man, this is how tutorial should be made direct to the point.
dunno if you’ll see this but the left side specifically of my graphics card will not go in. it’s not the trays as i’ve taken the ones that need to be taken out. i don’t wanna break anything, but for some reason the right side of the connector is sliding in easily while the left is poking out. the ports on the back are also out of place and the metal on the left is no against the case frame to be screwed in
Thank you for helping the noob community. Also, your voice is so good I want to be friends with it hah
my computer is connected directly into a motherboard but i have a non working video card, now i upgraded my computer and installed a 1060ti videk card. when i open my computer it will show a loading icon and will load for a long time after that it will turn to a black screen. how do i fix it? please help
thanks man just got my ryzen 3600 build and idk how to put my gpu to it
Great video and super clear.
Just to double check. If I have 2 GPUs and I want to replace both, installing the drivers once will make both new GPUs functional, right?
If both the GPU's are the same model, yes. :)
@@Torqcx Thanks! For a 32 core Threadripper with dual 2080TI, what PSU would you recommend?

THANK YOu SO MUCH
With multiple PCIe slots do you have to use the one closest to the proc? What if you wanted to give the card a little more air circulation by installing it in the second slot? Ok to do? Assuming they are both the same of course.
The short answer is that it doesn't matter which PCIe slot you install the card in, they will run at the same speed. However, many motherboards will have both PCIe x16 3.0 and 2.0 slots (basically 3.0 is a little faster). Typically they will be color-coded, so if one of the slots is a different color, it's likely you have both types on your motherboard, and if you were to install the card into the 2.0 slot, you'd get slightly worse performance. Consult your motherboard's manual to be sure.
But again, often times with modern motherboards you'll only have 3.0 slots, so it won't matter.
You just earned a new sub mate!
See I have an mini itx board and a atx case and the pcie 16 slot doesn't line up what do I do should I just get a pcie 16 slot extension cable or will I just work I can send an image if you need to
I've never heard of a PCIe extension cable, but if the motherboard isn't lining up correctly it sounds like that's what you will need to do, otherwise you could get a new case.
After u install gpu and the pin do i connect hdmi there or at the top i have Integrated graphics or do i connect the hdmi at gpu
You would connect the cable to the newly-imstalled GPU.
Hey I have a problem my gpu doesn't want to get in slot no matter what I do
can you put a gpu with 3 fans into an atx case and mobo
It depends on your GPU's size specifically, but yes, that's what I did in this video
So if i have an uhd 770 integrated graphics, i haven't to disinstall any driver before installing a graphic card
You shouldn't! On modern motherboards the graphics will default to a dedicated card that's physically installed in the slot.
Do I have to uninstall my drivers if I’m going from amd graphics card to another and graphics card?
It's recommended that you always uninstall the previous drivers regardless, but if you're upgrading to a new card with the same chipset manufacturer like you are (and like shown in the video), I hear it's not necessary as the driver software should take care of it. But uninstalling the previous drivers is the fail-safe.
@Torqcx how do you do that
i have intel hd 730 graphics on Mi pc
So i don't have to do anything like Uninstalling GPU driver right? For installing RTX 3060 just plug install driver and play ?
Yes, if you have integrated graphics that's all you should have to do!
Hey I’m just wondering is there any chance my pc case is not big enough for a graphics card I have a omen prebuilt pc and was wondering if it would work with a Radeon 5700 xt
You would have to measure your PC's case or just look up its dimensions. Most cards will fit in most cases, even micro ATX's.
It's been awhile since i put a computer together so you just put the card in and it will work though without drivers it'll look like crap ,yes?
Correct!
I want to add rx 570 4gb with my ryzen 3 3200g do i have to uninstall display drivers?
It doesn't matter what type of GPU you already have, it's always recommended to uninstall the old drivers. You "can" get away without uninstalling them, though
so if i'm understanding this right for the most part (outside of niche cases)
integrated graphics is plug and play?
Yes, integrated/onboard graphics should be plug-and-play if the OS has been properly installed on the system.
Tryna install 2070 super. Wish me luck!
So Did It Went Smoothly?
@@Iordvon yeah i got it in and it works like a charm!
Uh oh 3090ti but still good tho
@@Poppyl0l what
Do I have to uninstall my drivers if I’m going from a amd graphics card to another amd graphics card?
Yeah. Make sure you get the drivers for your gpu specifically, since you install the specific drivers under the name.
AMD Radeon? Nope
hey just a question where would i find the power supply cable that i can plug into my gpu (if that makes sense) i wanna upgrade my prebuilt with integrated graphics but i wanna keep my regular PSU so where would I find the “external power for dedicated gpu” cable?
The PCI-e cable from the PSU will only exist if the PSU has enough wattage to support a dedicated card, which most OEM PC's don't have. Most likely you will have to buy a new PSU that will be able to support your new graphics card and swap it out.
Torqcx okay thanks
going up to RTX 2060 Super, from a GTX 1660-Ti. So when I go on Nvidia's site to find the new driver, it just displays the current game ready driver that I already have installed, and lists it as being compatible with both the old 1660-Ti & the new 2060 Super.. does that mean I will skip that step or should I still reinstall the driver just to be safe
I have never witnessed that situation, but I think the short answer would be yes, just reinstall the driver to be safe. It can't hurt.
I have an old hp pavilion that I brought in 2017. It’s a desktop pc that I wish I could play games on it with good fps. I was thinking what if I replace the graphics card and order a GTX 1660? Would I have any problems doing that? I’ve never done a tear down for a pc.
It's likely that that desktop has an integrated card, and it's possible you can upgrade to a GTX 1660 but you'll most likely also need to upgrade the power supply.
I wanna install my RTX 3080 but I also need to change my PSU to 850 watt, Do I also need any water cooler because I don’t have one.
Water coolers are not necessary. Just upgrade your PSU and you should be all set. :)
Hey I know you made this video a while ago but I took out my graphics card for something then put it back in and got no output how can I fix that
Just make sure everything's plugged in correctly and tight, the required power cables are in, and so forth. Do you have onboard video? If so, there's a chance the BIOS has defaulted to that when you took the card out.
i want to upgrade from gtx 1650 to 1080 ti, is there any drivers i have to like delete or install

Can i have rtx 2060 super gaming with amd raysen 5 3600 on 144 uhd monitor?

Can you install a graphics card into a office pc. I don’t know the processor it just says i5 on the front
You'd need to open it up and find out if it has a PCI-e x16 slot, and from there determine if the PSU is powerful enough to support it (it most likely isn't, in which case you'd have to upgrade it).
I’m thinking to upgrade my gt 710 to a 1050 ti do I need to have the 1050 ti driver on my pc before I install or can I wait after I install
Dk Gaming do I have to plug in hdmi/vga cable into the gpu
Get a 1060 instead.
Either way, it's easier to install before though, hope ur build goes well
I really need to know this for the wire does it connect to the motherboard or the other side of the pc
Are you referring to the power supply's PCI-e connector? That comes from the power supply, it doesn't connect to the motherboard.
Torqcx like how it works the cord pci e
If i get a graphics card worse then the one my drivers on my pc have will it be worse?
Yes, that would be downgrading to a new card.
how do you find the pins for the graphics card on a pc with internal graphics
It's the same exact process, you just have to look for the PCI-e x16 slot on the motherboard; it doesn't matter whether it has internal graphics or not.
i have an question, so now im using a ryzen 3 3200g intergrated graphics and want to buy my first gpu ( gtx 1650 SUPER) if deleted my old drivers plugged it in with my 6 pin power connector can i open google, search nvidia drivers and install it or do i need to have it as zipfile before installation??? hope to see an answer
Yes, you can still use your computer and search the internet without the drivers installed. It just won't look as good and you probably won't get your full resolution at the time. It's usually just recommended to obtain the drivers before you install the new card, as it's just easier.
Torqcx oh okay thnx:) just subbed
How do I connect a GeForce RTX 2060. My cables have 1 eight pin and 2 break of two from 6 pins. I’m so confused where do I plug them in :(
I too installed an RTX 2060 in this video, and the card requires only 1x 8-pin. Just plug the 8-pin connector from the PSU to the 8-pin port on the card and you'll be all set.
Dude help im using Ryzen 5 2400g cpu in a gigabyte A320m-s2h mobo and im planning to put a Zotac 1070ti amp. Many people have said i cant use the full pcie slot coz i have apu. And they said i can only use like 75% of my gpu :(( any comments on this? Nice vid btw!
What is an "APU"? And "can't use the full PCI-e slot?" I don't understand what they mean by that. Looking from pictures of that motherboard and its specs, I don't see why you'd have any issues like that.
I'm trying to install a graphics card and a WiFi card, I'm wondering how to install a WiFi card in a PCI express 1 slot (not sure on terminology XD) is it the same as a graphics card or is there a few extra steps?
And whats the frames I can expect when I install graphics card, for games like apex, fortnite and valorant, can give a few specs now, let me know if u need more
Motherboard: D3230 A1
CPU:Intel(R) Pentium (R) CPU G3260 @ 3.30GHz
Planned gpu: ASUS Nvidia GeForce GT710
RAM: 8GB
Installing a Wi-Fi card is a similar, easier process than installing a graphics card, and I have a video on it here: ruclips.net/video/nyqou9hU7mY/видео.html
As for your system, those specs look closer to the budget side of things. Not bad, those games will certainly be playable, but you'd probably have to keep things on the medium-low settings if you want anything near 60FPS.
@@Torqcx thanks alot, so happy rn, have a great day man
Is the msi gaming x gtx 1650 super a 1 slot or 2 lot would you know
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER is a dual-slot. If you look at this image of one, you can see: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/811eJeQfu7L._AC_SL1500_.jpg
NVIDIA uses their "GTX" label when they are referring that the card is dual-slot. As far as I know, they use the term "GT" when it's a card that only takes one slot.
What the deuce do I do if it requires a 6-pin connector but there are no connectors
available?
You can get a converter (there are various ones, but some that work at 2x molex to 6-pin), but generally speaking if your PSU does not have any 6/8-pin connectors, chances are it is not powerful enough to handle the card in the first place. Check its wattage (typically dedicated GPU's that are mid-grade require at least 400w or so).
Thanks.
Installed new graphic card, card is thicker than the old card.
And now my wifi card will not fit.hardline would fix this, but is there any other way to get wifi?thanks
There are WiFi USB sticks you can get. They work about as good.
Wait, so I have currently an RTX 2080 Super, and I'm thinking about getting another 2080 Super. I'm just kinda wondering if it's possible to run the exact same GPU's without any complications, or if you have to have two different ones in the same computer.
When it comes to NVIDIA SLI, you must get the same exact card for them both to function.
Torqcx Ok, thank you!

I have one question. This pc that Im using now, has a GT 1030 DDR4 with a i3-4130 and I have another pc with Pentium G4400 but with GT 1030 DDR5. Since i3-4130 > G4400, I wanted to place the better GPU in this one. Do I need to do anything about the drivers? Or I just need to take out the gpu, place the other one and then Im good to go?
Ps: I don't know if this is important, but the pc with i3 4130 was from my uncle, so it has cracked windows 10. I was thinking in getting windows 10 the free version, with that watermark. What should I do?
You would just follow what was instructed in the tutorial. Does the other PC already have a GPU in it? If so, uninstall the drivers, take it out, put in the new GPU, and install the new drivers. Otherwise, just plug the new card into the system and install its drivers.
As for the OS, that is up to you. I don't condone or support piracy on this channel. If you want to be safe I would get the free version of Windows 10 (or just buy it).
@@Torqcx Thank you!
I just bought a 1080ti for £300 I'm so excited
So if i want to buy a graphics card and have currently integricated graphics card will there be anything on the way?
So here's the thing, 9/10 times you shouldn't have to do anything additionally, because modern motherboards will default to the PCIe slot if they detect a card is in there. However, on occasion if for some reason your PC is not doing that, you'll just have to go into the BIOS and manually set your system to the slot and not the integrated GPU.
@@Torqcx thanks
@@Torqcx Can you be more specific please? Didn't understand a thing.. :D If i have integricated card do i just plug graphics card and then run that Nvidia driver instalation?
@@percy1633 Yes, typically you just install the card, plug your monitor into it and install the driver. If for some reason you run into problems, disable the onboard video either in the Device Manager or the BIOS.
Is the 3 fan version better?
🤔
The three fan version will do a better job at cooling the card, but will take up more space.
This might seem like a stupid question, but I have a decently old computer that isn't made for gaming I want to upgrade. It has a small graphics card but I don't know if something like a RTX 3060 (what I am planning to buy) will work with it. Will the new GPU work? Can my computer handle it? Is this a legible thing to do or should I buy a new computer? Is it even compatible? Sorry for the long question.
Thanks in advance
Basically it's up to your power supply, I'd be surprised if even a small modern PC "wouldn't be able to handle it", because again, these days all GPUs should be compatible with all the components. Just make sure you have a strong enough PSU (check on NVIDIA's website and see what they recommend for wattage)
@@Torqcx Ok thank you
windows 10 vs 7 for gaming & emulaters?? Please some1 tell which is better for my geforce crad? :)
Basically, these days, Windows 10 will be the better, more stable option; as graphics cards, drivers and software update, an operating system that is no longer being updated along with them (such as Windows 7) eventually will run into problems and compatibility issues. Personally I prefer Windows 7 because I like its GUI and find it a lot more to-the-point, but soon I too will have to switch to 10.
Hello , I have a question . Do I need to worry about the power connectors?
If your card requires them, then yes.
Does 3070 graphic card support in h61 gigabyte motherboard with Intel i3 2 gen processor which I have 4k TV to view 4k movies and play 4k games
Virtually any motherboard will support any graphics card, your power supply is what you want to be concerned about.
Power supply means the smps right which smps does it supports
hope this will work
Can you please help me I cant get to the windows screen,I'm stuck in bios
Did this happen after you swapped out/installed a graphics card? Try re-seating it, blow out any potential dust/gunk that could be in the slot, make sure the teeth on the card are clean, etc.
We would be in 2030 if someone hired this man
So brother my question is, that this will work for any desktop PC RIGHT??? plz tell me. 🙏
Yes, as long as the PC has a PCI-e x16 slot and the power supply is powerful enough to handle the card. Typically, though, OEM PC's have very weak PSU's and you'd have to upgrade it to support the graphics card.
im thinking of buying a new case, motherboard , ram etc and using my gpu that i already have, should i do it?
I don't see why not. What are your current specs and what are you upgrading to?
Torqcx current specs: i5 3470 ,gtx 1060 and 8gb of ddr3. upgrading specs: Ryzen 5 3600, gtx 1060 and 16gb of ddr4 (3000)
@@apzypz Yeah, upgrading to a more modern generation board with DDR4 RAM is always a good idea, and for most games that card should still be fine. I should be doing the same thing soon, myself.
Hey i just have a question. So right now I’m my pc i don’t have a graphics card and i have integrated graphics and I’m going to buy a dedicated graphics card. So will my pc have the cord to plug into the graphics card?
What kind of PC do you have? Most OEM (original manufacture PC's, as in pre-built computers you get at most stores) will not have PCI-e connectors running from their power supplies. Best to open the computer up and check the power supply. It's likely that you'll need a new one, though; I can't remember I time I saw a pre-built computer from Dell or some other company with a dedicated GPU-ready PSU installed.
